Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 thread number 29 - The C word party season is not too far off, come join us and drop a few pounds. Warning! This way of eating is so easy you may never want to stop...

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

Lurkers and new starters: please just jump in and post - you'll find a lot of support here and we’re a friendly bunch.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through the fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Yes Betsy I agree! Why is it all cupcake recipes these days seem to be more topping than cake? [bleurggh face]. Although, the topping in this recipe contained cream which made think of a squirty cream kind of consistency, which would be quite light. (Imagines shoving face into massive pile of squirty cream to prove point)

DumDum32 · 30/10/2013 10:57

thanks Betsy & cuckoo I like the idea of liquid diet - it will at least keep my pain at bay. cuckoo I've already started taking my meds once a day now in the afternoon to avoid any severe pain that is y I think it's the food that is giving me the pains. I ate at 6 pm last night & just had breakfast at 10 so that's 16 hours fd. although I spent most of it sleeping Grin

I'm planning to stock up on weight watchers shakes for the liquid diet - what do u all think? or are soups better?

oh I have started drinking loads n loads of water!!!

DumDum32 · 30/10/2013 11:02

hi Lucy thanks for welcome :)

I am thinking about starting to eat boiled vegetables during the day to snack on. must admit I'm ok with fruit aswell but have been reading that fruit contains a lot of sugar aswell although healthy sugar.

CuckooAtchooUhOh · 30/10/2013 11:36

Dumdum I can't vouch for weight watchers shakes as never tried them. All I would say though, is don't go nuts on low fat products. Quite often they are just packed with artificial flavours, sweeteners, colours, preservatives etc. None if which is particularly healthy for your body.

If fasting appealed for more than just weight loss (ie health benefits) then it is worth bearing in mind that a lot of processed food, especially low fat 'healthy' options are far from ideal for the body. Have you thought of making your own soups, shakes or smoothies?? If this is too much to think about, too soon, then a piece of fresh fruit would be much better for your body than an artificial shake, regardless of sugar/cal content. I'm not saying NEVER have them, just that your body would benefit more if you can get as much natural food in as poss, and just have the ready made when it's more convenient to.

It is also better to have a small amount of something real - like butter, than a large amount of something fake - like low fat spreads etc.

Hope this doesn't sound like a lecture because I am no saint! If I am patronising - apologies it is not my intention. If you would like any help, advice regarding food ideas/cooking then, again, just ask on here. Most people are happy to share and spread the love!

CuckooAtchooUhOh · 30/10/2013 11:48

Oh and bananas were/are good - gentle on stomach but keep you fuller longer.

Also eggs, boiled whole as snack, or mini omelette. Filling and gentle on tummy too.

Both under 100 cals but should keep you going for a few hours.

BetsyBell · 30/10/2013 11:57

dumdum The soup route would be better, as I suspect ww shakes are probably full of sugary crap, or worse, artificial sweetener crap. 'Diet' food products are mostly awful and don't stand up well to a bit of ingredients list scrutinising.

Lots of low cal soup recipes here or supermarket meal soups are good - many around 200 calories for a whole pot and are very satisfying.

Keep to natural food as much as possible, fast as long as possible on fast days and I'll bet your stomach issues will diminish enormously.

MelanieCheeks · 30/10/2013 12:00

I'm not a banana fan, I have to say. They repeat on me dreadfully, don't fill me up, and I can feel the sugar rush-slump starting.

Eggs are brilliant - so versatile.

If I'm having a "nibble through the day" FD, I'll have a mini babybel, some cucumber slices, miso soup, and a couple of Finn crisps with a smear of marmite on them. And a variety of herbal and rooibos teas.

Little NSV to report - I'd bought a lovely grey/ black Sportmax dress in a charity shop last week. Said size 8 on the hanger. Tried it on this morning - it's snug, but the zip does up without straining. I've just cut out the annoying scratchy checked the label - it's actually a 6!

BetsyBell · 30/10/2013 12:03

Oh and a 16 hour fast is great dumdum - I'll bet you'll be able to push that to 18hours by waiting till lunchtime to eat within a few fasts! Yes, most of it is sleeping time but it still counts Grin

I generally do 18/19 hour fasts by eating at 6pm the night before then eating a very small salad-leaf and veg or soup lunch meal (I only really have this meal due to work situation, it's often less than 100calories) then a normal, albeit veg-heavy and carb-free, meal in the evening - around 300 calories. It's easy and feels completely normal once you get into a routine of it.

BigChocFrenzy · 30/10/2013 12:50

Wow, you hoopers are tough. I don't get injured that badly from boxing !

Melanie Great NSV !

BigChocFrenzy · 30/10/2013 13:02

Welcome Dumdum
On an FD:
Smoked salmon, tinned tuna, boiled eggs are high quality proteins wich require very little prep. Add salad or veg (Not spuds) boiled or MWaved and you can have a big low cal plate that keeps you nourished for a long time.
Starches or fruit can cause hunger and fruit can even make an empty tum queasy.

Good to start a gentle exercise program too, if you don't already.

On NFD, I aim for high protein and 8 portions of veg, but we're all different. My username hints at what my NFDs also contain
Grin

eatriskier · 30/10/2013 13:08

wow melanie. You'll have to stop soon or try kids clothes Envy

As everyone on these threads are aware, my biggest loves appear to be Wine, bounty bars and peanut butter. I was trawling through Sainsbury's the other day and found this:
peanuthottie.com
My little peanut butter loving tummy is very happy. Decided to try it with half the recommended amount (going on the basis that Options only uses half). Yummy yummy.

Today I decided to experiment. 5g peanut hottie, 5g white chocolate options. 42 calories. Soooooooooo good.

BetsyBell · 30/10/2013 13:29

Literally watching paint dry today... so annoying as there's really not much to do between coats and I may have accidentally bought too many tiny bars of chocolate fun (due to half term, halloween blah blah) so snack options are plentiful and calorific. Already had lunch so fighting the urge to raid the cupboards.

Hey ho. Kettle on I suppose!

In other news, I remembered that I always used to put on up to half a stone every holiday, including half terms Blush. That's a thing of the past at least. (I hope!)

OP posts:
BetsyBell · 30/10/2013 13:30

eat Ooh, that looks nice actually, might have to hunt some of that down too :)

OP posts:
WilsonFrickett · 30/10/2013 13:38

Does the hoop slim you by tenderising your meat so to speak?? Grin that really made me lol.

Had a yummy smoked salmon omlette to break my fast but still feeling a little bit hungry so kettle on again. Have enough cals for an options but want to leave it till my slump at 4pm. Cauliflower and veg curry for tea, yum! May even have enough cals to sprinkle it with a taco shell for a bit of crunch

Dumdum I agree with BigChocFrenzy - fruit on an empty stomach doesn't really agree with me, but I do find hot drinks really help and even a tiny bit of protein goes a long way.

MelanieCheeks · 30/10/2013 13:59

White chocolate options - bleurgh! Love any of the caramel/ butterscotch/ hazelnut type favours though.

Bizarrely, I havent lost any pounds, but maybe this is one of those "you'll notice it in your waistline" moments. I'm on teh hunt for a hula hoop to keep it in shape.

It's a NFD here, but I tried the "look what we found" meatballs for lunch - very tasty indeed, for under 300 cals.

BsshBossh · 30/10/2013 14:20

Melanie fantastic NSV!
eatriskier that peanut butter hot drink is now on my shopping list Thanks
DumDum you're doing so well, I'd just keep on as you are - aiming for veg and protein through the day. Loads of people eat thrice or twice on a FD. I was 15 stones last year and am now heading towards the 8s so you can do it with patience and consistency :)

NFD for me today but still chose a beetroot soup for my lunch today. My FD habits are catching! A went for a long walk today as DD is at a party and I was fine so it looks like I can exercise again when school's back and go back to my 2000 cal TDEE. Hurrah!

BsshBossh · 30/10/2013 14:22

lucyintheskywithdinos I love quinoa, tofu and greens. Please can you share your recipe eg what dressing etc?

TheLeastAccomplishedBennetGirl · 30/10/2013 14:37

Bssh, thanks for posting about reducing your TDEE when more sedentary, had to rest my knee up from running due to minor niggle and been housebound due to half-term AND nursing injured adult DS.

Shredded this morning and have childcare planned for tomorrow so can run.

Almost sabotaged myself there didn't I?

Itsaboatjack · 30/10/2013 14:51

Phew 6w6p done and it didn't kill me, thought it was going to at one point. Holding a side plank whilst raising your lower leg, what kind of torture is that!!! Managed some hula hooping too, it doesn't bruise me anymore but it definitely still just feels like its squooshing the fat away.

With half term I've not been doing my usual school runs which is 4 miles walking a day so I'm off for a walk round the park this afternoon in my break.

FD going well so far, just hot drinks so far, and think I'll have a prawn stir fry for dinner.

Hope all other FDers are doing well.

I'm definitely going to be on the look out for that peanut hottie too.

MrsFlorrick · 30/10/2013 15:15

Itsa. Only had the meat part of the burger and salad without dressing and water hence staying more or less on track. Bit boring though.

Eatriskier. Will review hoop injuries in a couple of days and try again. I guess my technique could do with improvement.

The knobbly bits on inside of hoop are meant to be acupressure massage points. Here: www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/B001L7U27W

I had to get the level 2 knobbly one because it was the only hoop I could find anywhere which was big enough for me. All the others were 102cm max. And then the top of the hoop only just reaches the bottom of my belly button.

Dotty342kids · 30/10/2013 16:22

MrsFlorrick that comment about meat tenderising really made me laugh Grin
I have got a padded hoop but the bruising was vicious the first couple of times then it calmed down. But when I did my epic 27 mins the other day it made a reappearance so had to have a couple of days off again afterwards. Nobbly bits sound like torture!
I just bought one that has connecting sections so you can make it bigger / smaller if you need to. What's this talk of it reaching belly buttons? Is there an optimum size? Smile

BsshBossh · 30/10/2013 16:25

Here was I all smug about eating a super healthy, low cal beetroot soup for today's NFD lunch then... DD returned from a birthday party with cake. She dislikes cake. Um, but I don't Blush.

Itsaboatjack · 30/10/2013 17:52

Bssh I have one of those strange dd's that don't like cake too. Well she likes chocolate cake but not Victoria sponge cake that you normally get at parties. I see it as my little perk for taking her to the party.

FD complete, had a yummy prawn and veg stir fry and now the kitchen is closed.

Itsaboatjack · 30/10/2013 17:54

don't like cake Hmm. Obviously I meant doesn't.
