Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 thread number 29 - The C word party season is not too far off, come join us and drop a few pounds. Warning! This way of eating is so easy you may never want to stop...

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

Lurkers and new starters: please just jump in and post - you'll find a lot of support here and we’re a friendly bunch.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through the fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

brnnet fab- feels great huh?

bsssh I'm going to try to be more like you!

Prob on 3500 cals by now.

Might just carry on as feels right and then fast properly on thurs.

I have had some v easy fast days and its always when I've got a calorie surplus within my digestive tract. I can at least be fairly confident of an easy fast on thurs, even if losing is too much to hope for.

BsshBossh · 29/10/2013 19:49

Argh. Haven't managed to exercise for 2 weeks (not even daily walking) due to pulled muscle/nerve in bottom and my TDEE has plummeted from 2062 (moderate exercise) to 1596 (sedentary). What a difference exercise makes! The trouble is I forgot to recalculate my TDEE downwards this fortnight until today and I've forgotten how to eat so little (for me). A lesson learned.

Sophiste · 29/10/2013 20:03

Successful FD here - 219 cals of sushi for lunch and then 210 cals of yummy soup for supper ("Bombay Spiced Cauliflower Bowl", found next to the Yorkshire Provender soups at Waitrose - highly recommended).

Possibly a mistake to consume the latter in front of GBBO Masterclass, but my kitchen is closed.

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 29/10/2013 20:12

Hi everyone - just re-marking my place on the thread.

We've been away for a long weekend for our anniversary. Much delicious food eaten and lovely wine drunk, who knows what the calorie count has been??!

A day of normal eating tomorrow, and then a fast on Thursday is the plan.

Itsaboatjack · 29/10/2013 20:45

Cuckoo we've been chasing trick or treaters out of the pub for years! they come in with little more than a mask and ask for money.

Chocopid , glad to hear the consecutive FDs are going well. I will be doing that too this week as tomorrow is the only other realistic day I can do it.

Well I've just got back from shopping. I had forgotten that shopping can actually be quite fun when you don't have to drag kids round with you. I bought myself some work boots and was having fun trying on some party outfits, and they all actually looked pretty good. This year I will be spoilt for choice rather than just wearing whatever fits that makes me look the least fat iykwim.

I may treat myself to this dress for Christmas. I'm still a little jelly in my belly though for it so I will have to take some inspiration from MrsF and dig out my 6 week 6 pack DVD.

BigChocFrenzy · 29/10/2013 22:06

evening all
Successful FD at 500 cals:
Smoked salmon, boiled egg & salad for lunch
Much-needed shake after evening training. My tum was rumbling so hard the final 20 mins, just as well the music was loud !
Grin

Sophiste mentioned that idiotic NHS page about IF damaging capability to work / exercise. After 2 tough hours of fasted Crossfit and HIIT spin, also my fasted 3.5 hrs weights, skipping, HIIT spin pn Sunday, I want to punch all these assorted "health experts" who just seem prejudiced against anything that isn't conventional low cal, low fat - and low success.

Several on this thread train fasted as well as on FDs. No problem once you are used to IF.

BigChocFrenzy · 29/10/2013 22:14

Well done, Bennett. That's an important milestone for you to savour.

Bssh Careful, you may gain a whole 2 ounces, you depraved thing, you.

cuckoo Sounds like a new you has been ordered for Xmas. Go for it !!

itsa Buy the outfit you love, for your target size. That's got to be motivating.

Southeastdweller · 29/10/2013 22:23

Well done bennet on your achievement Smile

alibaba I now always think of Green and Blacks chocolate when I see your name. Looking forward to munching on the lemon flavour tomorrow! Mind you I might try the new Lindt Blueberry intense if I see that as I recall you raving about that recently.

Another FD over with and I've come in roughly just above 500 cals. Kitchen closed at 7.30 and food order arrived at 9 and not tempted to pick at any of it.

Breadandwine · 29/10/2013 23:11

Hope all you guys are watching the Feminist discussion on Newsnight ATM!

Oops, too late - but you can catch in online.

eatriskier · 30/10/2013 07:33

Well done bennet and anyone else I've probably missed who have losses and nsvs.

Scales haven't been kind to me the last couple of days but I know that's courtesy of the mirena who has blessed me with a second aunt flo visit in also as many weeks. Last one I had teh hunger. This one I have teh bloat. Meh. This is why I wanted some wiggle room and have a target zone. I remember now!

Good luck to today's fasters

Dotty342kids · 30/10/2013 07:59

breadandwine, yes I watched that. Interesting but wish the interviewer hadn't kept interrupting Mary Beard, very irritating!
itsaboat that dress looks fab, you go for it Smile

Fast day yesterday ended with a piece of fruit bread and some hula hoops which wasn't really the plan but never mind!
Normal day today which will be spent in the kitchen decorating said Squeamish Squares (are you going to make them too cuckoo?), breadsticks (courtesy of my son's GBBO obsession) and a shepherds pie for tea.

CuckooAtchooUhOh · 30/10/2013 08:04

Hi All,

So yesterday fd was a success after all, in under 500, and made the most delicious accidental dinner (sprouts and udon noodles), which brings me to Not2be - one thing I've noticed on my short time at this, is, it's always the first one after a blip that is biggest struggle, but if can stick it out it does seem to click inside again. Well done for yesterday, I'm sure next one will be much easier.

I am setting myself (maybe unrealistic) target of getting to 10's by Christmas. If I don't make it, I will still hopefully have shaved bit off. That means 10lbs in 8 weeks. Will have to step things up with a few 4:3's and some exercise but aim high an' all that!

Itsa Go for it! You will look amazing in that dress and imagine how you will feel!

Hi DumDum - I would say, if you have lots of 'issues' ie meds and are concerned, then just ease yourself into this woe. Start as you are and build up, going longer for fast period and reducing your calorie intake gradually on fd's. The key is counting cals to begin with as boring as is. But it does help re educate you in terms of how much you need/ versus how much you are used to eating. To really lose weight, you do need to be watching/counting your intake on nfd's too. I personally haven't, but am very strict on fd and have noticed my appetite has shrunk dramatically on nfd. I eat reasonably balanced diet anyway. And if I splurge, I try to be extra good for few days until I feel I've balanced it. The key, as you will hear most say, is finding a way that suits you. It needs to be something you can stick to long term, not just a short term fix. Good Luck!

Nfd here, museum trip postponed until a weekend. Couldn't be arsed with queues decided to do something more local and get Halloweening!

CuckooAtchooUhOh · 30/10/2013 08:14

Yes think we are Dotty - going out for morning, then home to make some goodies, costume and pumpkin carving. Good job it's a fd! Grin

EatRisky I am going to try one of those pumpkin spice lattes today. I will try to channel the enjoyment of it, to you, to help soothe your bloat! In the meantime...... I found this the other day and thought of you ...(goes off to find out how to post links).... watch this space...

CuckooAtchooUhOh · 30/10/2013 08:15

Dotty

CuckooAtchooUhOh · 30/10/2013 08:15

Nfd!!! grrrrrr...

MrsFlorrick · 30/10/2013 08:55

Itsa. Great dress! Get Jillian out and dig deeep! You need to feel your abs on fire! Grin

I have called a temporary halt to my hoola hooping experiment. The old hoop (Davina one) was too small as advised here. New one has those stupid acupressure knobbly bits on the inside. And I am bruised. Not a little bit but a lot!!! One side of my waist is one large angry purple blue bruise and ditto other side. It's hit my legs a few times and they are ouch too.

How do the rest of your hoppers avoid the bruises??

I followed the instructions only to hoop 3 mins a day for the first week. Well I am still covered in bruises and this morning in need of painkillers just to get up.

Does the hoop slim you by tenderising your meat so to speak?? That was DHs suggestion anyway.

Predictably my fast day yesterday didn't go entirely to plan it was over by 200 cals. But I did work out with nasty hoop Jillian 6w6p and pushed the DC around central London all afternoon (transport museum, burger dinner at GBK and train home).

Not a fast day today. Am going to eat modestly though. I have only just shed the extra lbs gained through PILs visit. And I want to lose the last 7lbs quickly as I want to get to my goal! So close so this is the time to knuckle down and not the time for biscuits!!

Good luck fasters!

Itsaboatjack · 30/10/2013 09:08

MrsF you went to GBK and only came in 200 over. I think that pretty good. And it sounds like you had a pretty busy day too. I will definitely give the DVD a go today.

FD went well yesterday. No food, just approx 100 cals of milk in tea and coffee and one mug of boullion.

I'm going for a consecutive FD today as we are going out tomorrow night then off to join dd's at my parents on Friday.

Dotty enjoy your squirmy squares today (pretty sure I got the name wrong there).

DumDum32 · 30/10/2013 10:06

Good morning all :)
thanks for the welcome talkinpiece & cuckoo

Bssh SW 16 1/2 stones, CW 16 stones, GoalW 10-12 stone. been fasting for 3 weeks now & eating healthy on non fasting days aswell.

just was wondering whether this initial loss is just water retention loss??? am a bit confused.

I have to eat throughout the day otherwise I get terrible stomach cramps (almost like ulcer pain which I've had before so avoiding getting to that stage). by eat I mean I'll have an apple or banana or something savory.

I've got a long way to go :(

CuckooAtchooUhOh · 30/10/2013 10:06

EatRisky as promised.....

when feeling bloated and yuck what you really need is to stick one or more of these in your cake hole Grin

Hope you feel better soon Thanks

somewherebecomingrain · 30/10/2013 10:09

cuckoo total cupcake porn Grin

eatriskier · 30/10/2013 10:24

MrsF I have a padded hoop but it didn't stop the bruising, it just went eventually (probably as my ability to hoop improved). I also managed to get my legs and knees in the early days too. The nobbly bits sound like they will hurt though.

Cuckoo omnomnomnomnomnom. I've only had 2 of them so far, first time I splashed out for cream and didn't feel too well later in the day, second time I avoided the cream and didn't feel ill later on but the flavour was obviously stronger! Really want one of those cupcakes now.

BetsyBell · 30/10/2013 10:25

Hi Dumdum that's a great start - I think it's fair to say that you're on your way and that after 3 weeks that's not just water retention :)
Stick with us, your goal weight is totally doable - go check out eatrisker's and Bssh's profile photos for inspiration, they've both lost more than 5 stone each.

Do you exercise much? It really helps - even if it's an extra bit of walking each day, or just standing up instead of sitting.

Well done Bennett! Feels good doesn't it Grin

cuckoo, somewhere Is it just me who looks at that massive pile of frosting on those rather tasty-looking little cakes and just thinks bleugh? I don't get cupcakes...

CuckooAtchooUhOh · 30/10/2013 10:38

EPIC POST ALERT!!

DumDum, that is unfortunate! The very basis of this woe is to try to achieve some kind of fast period. Without which, you would just be calorie counting. Have you been back to docs about stomach pains? I get stomach ulcers, usually as result of nsaids I take when my back goes. Am just (fingers crossed) coming off omeprazole which I've been taking for an ulcer for 8 wks (stress/mystery? related). I am not medically qualified, but from own experience I know that some tablets can really irritate the stomach. If this is your experience, can you either look into whether it is an ulcer and get something to help clear it up, and/OR try to move your medication to one time, later in day, allowing you to take with your fd meal (which will hopefully avoid further irritation).

I also find with ulcers that one of the things that relieves the pain is when eating?? Could this be what is happening with you? I know it gets very confusing and frustrating trying to work out what is going on with what internally! If you want to succeed at this, you have come to right place and will get lots of support and encouragement from everybody.

If you can get to a stage of longer fasting periods, I think the break for your liver/digestive system etc will do your body the world of good.

Keep doing what you are and try to make gradual adjustments. But don't deprive yourself on nfd (yet) as that is fast track to misery! Eat less. Eat less crap. Try to find a nice stomach soothing fd meal to have with meds if/when you manage to move them to later in day. Alternatively you could have 2 smaller meals during day if really can't change timimg. Drink LOADS of water. If you really can't consolidate calories on a fd then maybe try liquid fasting of a degree - in that you drink cup of soups as/when needed pain wise.

  • just to add, that I started this woe 6 wks ago. It has had no adverse affect on my stomach situation. If anything, I would say it has helped the healing process.

Regards water weight, I'd lost 5lbs after first 3 fds. Was this water weight? Doesn't really matter, because either way it has stayed off and I have continued to lose 1-2lbs a week since. (and I have had some blowouts Shock too!)

Stick with it and you will see results Thanks

lucyintheskywithdinos · 30/10/2013 10:39

Morning! Ended with a mini fast yesterday. Going for another mini today. I have tomato and basil soup for lunch then I'm cooking quinoa and summat for tea. Maybe baked tofu and greens.

Welcome dumdum quite a lot of people here eat through the day. Have you tried having lean protein and veg rather than fruit, I know fruit makes me hungry and it seems the same for a few others here too.
