The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

Lurkers and new starters: please just jump in and post - you'll find a lot of support here and we’re a friendly bunch.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through the fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Uh oh. I've just eaten two thirds of a full round whole cake. About 1500 cals in a sitting (it's a relatively light cake). On top of a 1000cal brekkie.

Oh well half term and all that. I did this before, just didn't realise. Thanks to 5:2 and mfp I can balance it all out.

Just salad for dinner. I had no dinner yesterday.

Talkinpeace · 29/10/2013 13:22

Hi All.
Not fasting this week but am doing 16:8 every day slight cheat to say that as I've never been a breakfast person

but here's a thought to run up the flagpole or put in your pipe

how would it feel to go into the Christmas season having lost a load of weight so that you know you can enjoy it an not come out the other side feeling horrible
and with the mental tools in place to hit target again by the end of January.

Tips Christmas Planning Tip
Look at your menus in terms of what you'll feel good with yourself about eating.
Leave a couple of blanks for meals when actually nobody in teh house will be hungry
leave a couple of blanks for meals when a simple sandwich of leftovers will be just fine
and make the special meals be small enough to allow nibbles before, ore reduce the amount of nibbles

Itsaboatjack · 29/10/2013 13:26

I think transport is slightly better than sm personally. Also it's less busy as its not free. Kids are free iirc but adults have to pay, though the ticket lasts for a year. Also you are then in Covent Garden so have a good pick of places for lunch and can watch some street performers. Disney store and build-a-bear shop is there too if you dd is into that.

Sophiste · 29/10/2013 13:50

In our house (according to 6yo slightly tomboyish dd; 16mo ds doesn't get a say) the running order of central London museums would be:

  1. London Transport Museum (free for kids only, v interactive and loads to see - also really good kids' science workshops in summer hols, though don't know whether they do them at half term).
  1. Science Museum's Pattern Pod interactive zone - great fun but packed in school hols. Free for all.
  1. British Museum's Egyptian section - absolutely fascinating but not as interactive. Free for all.

Then getting dd's prizes outside the centre of town would be the RAF Museum at Hendon, the National Army Museum in Chelsea (yes, really) and the National Maritime Museum at Greenwich - all v. interactive and well-designed for the youngsters.

Itsaboatjack · 29/10/2013 13:56

I've just realised I'm not working tonight and have no kids to occupy my time. What shall I do with myself?

I was thinking I may take a walk up to Oxford St and try on some potential Christmas party dresses, and maybe do a little Christmas shopping.

Sophiste · 29/10/2013 14:00

Oops - by Pattern Pod at the Science Museum I meant Launchpad (much more exciting!).

BsshBossh · 29/10/2013 14:54

London museums My 5 yo loves the Tate because she likes to sit in front of a painting of her choice and draw it (we take sketchbook and pencils). This is great when you're with another adult as you can take turns to go round the galleries but not so fun if you're the sole adult to supervise child as she draws.

The National Gallery has storytelling. Top floor of Science Museum has interactive science zone - absolutely terrific and even my 5 yo gets engrossed.

But for a great day out you can't beat the Transport Museum, a play on the iPads in the Apple store across the road, buskers in Coventry Garden and lunch at Polpo or Wahaca nearby (both very kid friendly).

FD for me today. Spent half the day driving from Shropshire to London which made not eating very easy (DH isn't eating either and DD was happy with a snack bag). I usually do sub-150 calorie FDs these days but may eat a normal meal with DH a dinner instead and make it a mini-fast/Fast 5 day then repeat tomorrow and Thursday. Need to be realistic during half term as I'm in sole charge of DD from tomorrow.

Dotty342kids · 29/10/2013 15:08

Probably not the best day to be making Squeamish Squares but at least they'll be setting overnight and not actually ready till tomorrow when I will look forward to one greatly! Grin

TheLeastAccomplishedBennetGirl · 29/10/2013 15:10

Oh yes, oh yes, oh yes!

I HAVE LOST MY FIRST STONE!

BsshBossh · 29/10/2013 15:12

TheLeastAccomplishedBennetGirl · 29/10/2013 15:24

Thank you, all of you for sharing your experiences

I'm so glad these threads exist, if I hadn't lurked for so long I wouldn't have even tried the 5:2

CuckooAtchooUhOh · 29/10/2013 15:26

Hurrah!!!!! BennetGirl what a great milestone for you! Well done!

Thanks for all feedback regards the museums. Am surprised about the transport museum. Have heard nothing but rave reviews about it this week, yet I probably wouldn't have had it on short list.

Coff, water, bouillon only, so far here. Would be sooooo easy to break it now. Have the right old munchies! Just about to click on Dotty's squeamish squares which I'm sure will help! Hmm

Dotty342kids · 29/10/2013 15:26

wow BennetGirl that's brilliant, well done!

Itsaboatjack · 29/10/2013 15:31

Well done BennetGirl, that's brilliant.

annielewis · 29/10/2013 15:47

Well done BennetGirl What a great result!!

DumDum32 · 29/10/2013 16:28

hey all may I join, I've been doing 12 hr fasts, stop eating after 6 & then have breakfast as late as I can usually around 9-10 am. it seems to be working thought a bit slow but I want to do it healthy as I have many health problems & am on huge amount of meds so can't do without totally eating. I've cut out all sugary products like cake & biscuita etc. swapped sugar with candle and eat mostly low fat products. do have a treat now n then though as I can't live without chocolate. had a night off yday & ate very unhealthy so today I'm not going to eat & have as much water as I can. maybe have a salad for dinner as I'm sure by that point I'll be starving again. so far I've lost half a stone doing this but still have a long way to go

a quick question do u think this loss is just water retention loss? I can't tell.

DumDum32 · 29/10/2013 16:32

candrel not candles Blush sorry just copy n pasted from another thread!

Chocupid · 29/10/2013 16:39

Well done BennetGirl a stone is a great milestone! now set your next goal now you know how easy it is...unless ur already at your goal weight of course!

I m on day 2 of a consecutive fast to blitz my 8lb gain (didn't do 5:2 all summer) today is easier than yesterday so as long as I keep strong all will be good, I need to get another one in before weekend, as I know as soon as I buy the Halloween treats all will be lost!
Tempted to not bother this year, most the kids who come round want money now (bloody legalised mugging me thinks) yes I know bah humbug! Grin

CuckooAtchooUhOh · 29/10/2013 17:01

Not bah humbug at all ChocCupid - can't believe what I've just bloody read!? Not had the money one here (yet) but if/when I do, I will swiftly remind the offenders that

a) it is .. Trick or treat; Smell my feet, or give me something, Nice to eat. NOT.. deposit into my bank account - we are still in a flippin' double/treble/quadruple dip after all!

b) this is FREE, donated voluntarily and good naturedly at MY cost you cheeky little beggars so just be bloody grateful for what you're given!

Oh and...

c) GET OFF MY DOORSTEP - YOU DISGUST ME!!!

Shock Shock .... erm letting off some pms there!

CuckooAtchooUhOh · 29/10/2013 17:03

Oh and interesting about your consecutive days fasting and finding second day easier. Will poss be doing one this week.

Chocupid · 29/10/2013 18:23

Yes really Found it a breeze today cuckoo
Only had a slim a soup up to now so will eat the rest in an hour. No hunger triggered at all for me, I'd Def give it a go.

On Halloween, even have teenagers dressing up and getting involved... Get a bloody job
Have reminded myself that I hate this time of year, so may dissapear upstairs with the choc and ignore the lot! I'm not PMT'd just moaning, perhaps it's the hunger kicking in now! Hmm

Talkinpeace · 29/10/2013 18:28

Dumdum WElcome - they will stop trick or treating each other in a minute! Grin

BsshBossh · 29/10/2013 18:48

Hello DumDum. What was your starting weight, how long have you been fasting 12 hours, what's your current weight, how much more weight do you want to lose?

BsshBossh · 29/10/2013 18:51

Successful FD today. Just broken it with a Golden Delicious apple and will be having chicken noodle soup later. Will definitely be eating my full 500 cals tonight :)

Not2bObvious · 29/10/2013 19:08

Excellent news Bennet! Great feeling isn't it? Post holiday blues here. My clothes feel disgracefully tightBlush Practically indecent looking but it's my version of punishment, tight til I fight my way back to slight (eh?) Today's FD has gone ok, not spectacular but will come in about 650. 8 weeks to Christmas, is there a freak out emoticon anyone?!?!?
