The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

Lurkers and new starters: please just jump in and post - you'll find a lot of support here and we’re a friendly bunch.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through the fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Morning everyone Grin

I almost don't dare say it. It's supposed to be a fD here today. It's just that the last 3 times I announced an FD on here I failed spectacularly and ate for England.

Determined today. I must get to my goal and soon. Only a few measely lbs away so must knuckle down....

Breadandwine. 36 hour liquid fast. Wow. I can't imagine how I'd get through that. Perhaps a 20 hour liquid fast would be possible but only if the liquid included cup a soup and miso Grin

Good luck fasters.

CuckooAtchooUhOh · 29/10/2013 09:54

Bennetgirl good luck with weigh in!

AnnieL We are feeders too. I am chief feeder - but apparently the only one who puts on weight! Wouldn't mind but I probably eat least/healthiest! Think wine was my downful though tbh. Cake just kept me there Grin

MrsF You are in good company today. I will be surprised if I don't end in epic failure. However, I am going to fight it with every lardy cell in my body!

CuckooAtchooUhOh · 29/10/2013 10:19

Can always tell when I'm struggling.... am on here every 5 mins Grin

Wasn't sure if it counts, but I'm calling it... Had my first NSV yesterday......

Last night I was storming upstairs in a strop with dog, who had just done the dreaded 'fishy' on me, to get changed. Had a right pouty scowl on, when unexpectedly caught sight of myself in a mirror temporarily dumped at top of stairs, and first thought was ...Oooh! Hello cheekbones - long time, no see! Was very happy, especially after really piggy long weekend.

Now daughter keeps asking why I look so unimpressed with everything Grin Or as just happened, thinks I'm pouting for kisses, which means I'm getting lots of extra from her. I would call that win win!

annielewis · 29/10/2013 10:22

Cuckoo - love your NSV! Good luck with the rest of your FD.

Itsaboatjack · 29/10/2013 10:25

Well I didn't manage to fast yesterday because, well because I'm just rubbish really. I'm going for liquid only today.

MrsF and cuckoo we can do it. Anyone else fasting today?

annielewis · 29/10/2013 10:45

I think I'm doing a 16:8, am basically skipping breakfast (apart from coffee necessary to function) and then very light lunch and then dinner. NO SNACKS!!!!! Smile

Still getting used to what I can do to limit damage by not being able to do 2 full FD's as its half term and too tricky to do a full one.

Might skip lunch and do a FD today as I know the end of the week is going to be carnage!!!!

BigChocFrenzy · 29/10/2013 10:50

Hi MrsF, Cuckoo, ItsaBoat: I'm FDing too. Just as well, after last night's demonstration of my username.

Well done Annie !

Cuckoo: Lovely to hear your NSV. Good luck with your Christmas target BUT whatever your weight you are never a "fat lump". You are a person of worth, who would like to be a smaller person.
Itsa: Noone here is rubbish. We are strong women (with a few issues re choc / B&J / crisps / bix ...)

Everybody: be proud of yourself. Heads high - and out of the cookie jar.

Sophiste · 29/10/2013 11:05

I'm another one on Team FD today. Sipping black coffee as we speak but also making sure to have lots of water today as I've been dehydrated lately.

Am feeling annoyed by the NHS page on IF here:

You are likely to be very hungry and have less energy and this could affect your ability to function (such as at work), in particular it may affect your ability to exercise which is an important part of maintaining a healthy weight.

No. Just no. That is not how it is. Angry

Preciousdaisybear · 29/10/2013 11:45

It's been a while since I checked in. Everyone sounds like they are getting on well. I FINALLY did my first shred this morning. Dear God I am so unfit. I wasn't helped by the fact that my 3yo kept sitting on me when I lay down to do the ab work. Didn't use weights either but arms are still killing me. The babyweight wobbling was pretty unpleasant but DS3 found it highly amusing as did the cats. Good to know someone gets enjoyment out of exercise. FD yesterday, next on Thurs. Hope to be in a size 14 before xmas Grin

CuckooAtchooUhOh · 29/10/2013 12:09

Aaah! BigChoc nice speech!! Very uplifting and motivational. Thanks

Hadn't thought of a Christmas target as such, but maybe that is what I need to do, take it up a notch? Need to think about realistic weight target. Am currently 11.10 (5'2) so 3 stone minimum still to go.

IMAGINE the feeling, come Christmas, that you are a better (healthier) person than last year. Can go into New Year with a head start on all the old resolutions. What a buzz that would be. Not to mention being able to enjoy shoving face in the Christmas trough the seasons delicacies, without feeling so self conscious!

Sold! Thanks BCF - think I have just got push I need to get through pmt and the season changes going on.

So question.... What exactly constitutes a liquid fast?? Is it liquid of any kind ie soups, or is it only cal free like water, blk tea and coff???

CuckooAtchooUhOh · 29/10/2013 12:13

"We are strong women with a few issues.." Grin Grin... Lol at BCF

..... Yeah and then some!!!

But nicely put Wink

Have some Cake for being 'kind' xx

MrsFlorrick · 29/10/2013 12:19

Cookoo and itsa. Grin
Yes I am fighting it!! A morning of wailing DC but I still managed to do my 6 week 6 pack workout and avoid biscuits and food in general.

Am eating beetroot and horseradish soup now in prep for taking DC into London Transport museum. If they can stop whining for long enough for us to actually leave the house!

Wish me luck and steely willpower for later in town surrounded by temptation!

Big choc. I'm like you. I can polish off choc and biscuits in alarming quantities. It's actually amazing how many I can eat if I don't stay away. I can't just have one biscuit or one square of choc, I must have the whole packet/bar or several packets....Hmm

whimsicalname · 29/10/2013 12:20

We'll done on your shredding precious. Like fasting, it does get easier with time -except then you have to go up a level-

Good luck today fasters. I am enjoying a nfd today and tomorrow, but will try to be sensible despite being out 2 evenings in a row.

Oh, and the scientific weigh in came to nothing: same as the day before. Will stick to Mondays from now on.

annielewis · 29/10/2013 12:21

Cuckoo we are weight/height twins - I was 11.10 but after a good day yesterday and last week am showing as 11.8 this morning. Am also 5ft2. Am hoping because I'm short the weight loss will start to 'show' quite soon (clutching at motivation straws)

Thanks BCF for the motivation!!

WilsonFrickett · 29/10/2013 12:29

OK, I've been putting it off but a quiet day today so no excuse. I'm going to measure myself. Have avoided it because don't want to see the evidence, but have to get it down so I can recognise NSVs. I just wish someone could do it for me and not tell me the numbers!

Itsaboatjack · 29/10/2013 12:32

ThanksBigChoc, that's very sweet.

Well done on 6W6P MrsF, I find that one really hard. My core needs a lot of work. I managed a plank for a full minute this morning though. Have fun at the transport museum today, my kids love it there. They are at my parents this week though as I couldn't get the time off work so no fun day trips for me this week Envy

Cuckoo a liquid fast to me will mean, tea and coffee with just a splash of milk, maybe a cup of boullion later if I need it, but mostly water. The whole day should be less than 100 cals.

Feeling a bit peckish now so will have a coffee and get stuck into work to distract me.

Dotty are you fasting today? How's it going?

CuckooAtchooUhOh · 29/10/2013 12:39

Oh no! AnnieL so pressure is on then! I am almost totm so dreading this weeks weigh in. Now hearing you at 11.8 I am def going to have to stick this out for to fd's this week for my fri weigh in. Can't have you leaving me behind can I eh! Well done on your loss - 2lbs is great!

CuckooAtchooUhOh · 29/10/2013 12:40

two!

CuckooAtchooUhOh · 29/10/2013 12:48

Thanks Itsaboat - maybe not today then Smile

Sorry for all questions but, all you museum visitors can I pick your brains....

We want to take dd tmw, have read all your comments in last few days so want to know what you think would best suit my dd just turned 8. Had wanted to do at least one museum and try to fit in trip to Hamleys. I know will be chaos! The NHM and the SM are next to each other yes? Which is best to spend most time in if only get one? And is the transport museum a good rival for dd? I've read some comments (not here) that apart from dinosaurs there isn't much for kids in NHM would you agree??

Dotty342kids · 29/10/2013 12:51

Hello itsaboat, cuckoo, Bssh and any other Tuesday fasters Smile
Fasting is going ok so far though am conscious that I'm not really drinking as much as I would normally as am busy and out and about as opposed to sitting at my desk.
Anyway, have just slathered a piece of salmon with some harissa paste and will be baking that in the oven to have with a couple of boiled potatoes and some salad for my tea later.
Had a very carb heavy couple of days featuring Pizza Express on Sunday and enormous jacket potatoes yesterday so definitely feel the need for this today Grin

I have rubbish core strength too btw, can barely manage 20 seconds of planking so am very impressed by your minute itsaboat!

CuckooAtchooUhOh · 29/10/2013 12:52

Though maybe should avoid! If on this thread alone there have been a few peeps with same idea then imagine the sheer numbers out there trying lol! Been wanting to go and waiting for Hamleys to be Christmasfied for ages, always put it off and go for something less busy than Central London in the hols, but we've run out of excuses with dd now!

CuckooAtchooUhOh · 29/10/2013 12:54

Hey Precious - how's your pelvic floor post shred??

Itsaboatjack · 29/10/2013 12:57

Science museum is way better than nhm, imho. It's more interactive.

My dd1 is just turned 9 and transport is her favourite, it's not free though whereas the other two are.

Hamleys is always chaos, but hey that's part of the fun. M&M world is always a hit too (Leicester Sq). Don't get it myself but the kids love it.

CuckooAtchooUhOh · 29/10/2013 13:02

Yeah heard someone up thread(s) mention m&m world - sounds right up dd's street! ....and will be a nfd (hopefully).

Is transport museum a rival to science museum for that age group?

Hi Dotty (waves)

Preciousdaisybear · 29/10/2013 13:06

cuckoo so far so good Grin but after reading all the posts I am going to do some post-prandial clenching. Does that count as exercise too?
