Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 thread number 29 - The C word party season is not too far off, come join us and drop a few pounds. Warning! This way of eating is so easy you may never want to stop...

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

Lurkers and new starters: please just jump in and post - you'll find a lot of support here and we’re a friendly bunch.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through the fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Congrats TIP! Nice neighbours eat.

BetsyBell · 28/10/2013 17:57

Congrats AuntieTip! Enjoy your MONDAY pizza Shock Grin

DH is at home today so we all ate dinner at 4.15. We both fasted all day prior to this so got to have a rare all-calories-in-one-go meal. We had our main meal at 5pm yesterday so that's a good long fast!

Kids in bed. Large bowl of Irish Stew about to be consumed. I. Am. Freezing.

lucyintheskywithdinos · 28/10/2013 20:02

Oh gods, the party food. Honestly, amazing. Cumin rice, black eyed beans, chana, pakoras and samosas. Home made kulfi for dessert.

I was soooooo sensible. I'd had an olive salad for lunch then had one plate full of food and then a spoon more of beans and chana. One samosa. No dessert because I was too stuffed. If A isn't granted asylum I will be moving to Pakistan with her so she can cook for me every day Grin

rubbishfamily333 · 28/10/2013 20:20

Helles - thanks for the tip about the veggies in the microwave Grin

So today I had:

a squeeze and stir soup 92cals

Pork loin and veg 216 cals

Zero coke 2 calories

And that's it! I did it Grin and I still have 190 calories left.

How would you spend your 190 calories wisely on a fast day? As I am still very hungry!

BigChocFrenzy · 28/10/2013 20:24

Well done, rubbish !
Have some protein and veg for your 190. E.g. I find a tin of tuna with vinegar is very satisfying. Add some tomato and cucumber if you have 'em.

WilsonFrickett · 28/10/2013 20:28

I would put 40 towards an options hot choc if you have anything in. Really warmed me up after picking DS up from school and standing in the park, and kept me going over the 4 - 6 slot.

BigChocFrenzy · 28/10/2013 20:31

Oh woe is me! I planned TDEE + 10%, but then Choc Frenzy struck 15 mins ago. I scoffed a magnum choc ice cream (sooo rich & chocolatey) and then some yummy chilli cashews. Nearly 500 cals extra before I stopped
Blush
This damn rain pelting down just dissolved my discipline.

Oh well, I'm 43ing, so FD tomorrow and CrossFit evening will hopefully bring things on track.

rubbishfamily333 · 28/10/2013 20:40

has anyone noticed that there is so much food on tv? Every couple of seconds seems to be about food.

I was going to make a curry tonight in the slow cooker, but I'm so hungry I'll do it tomorrow.

I am thinking I need something filling like either weetabix or a slice of toast and peanut butter.

Actually just had a thought, I bought lemons so will have lemons and hot water. Wow exciting stuff.

CuckooAtchooUhOh · 28/10/2013 21:18

Well done rubbish Lol! at food on tv. Is very typical of a fast day to notice everything and obsess about food; especially planning what you're going to do when you get your greedy mitts on whatever you like the following day!

The funniest thing is waking up next day not in least bit hungry or obsessed. Not to mention confusing and annoying!

All part of fun though! Also each fd can be quite different. Some a challenge, but some an absolute breeze. Stick at it, you'll reap the rewards and is highly addictive!

Breadandwine · 28/10/2013 21:28

I'll echo those congratulations, AuntieTip! Flowers

Enjoy your week off.

I'm another fan of veg in the microwave. My wife isn't very keen on carrots, so I microwave some for me - and the flavour is enhanced, IMO. I don't bother with cling film - I just stick a saucer over the top of the dish.

Lucy, that's a bit naughty of you, posting about that Pakistani meal - I'm presently 28 hours into a 36-hour liquid fast! Grin

(Sounds amazing, BTW!)

Actually I don't mind in the slightest, I'm one of the lucky ones who doesn't feel any hunger on FDs - NFDs it's a different story!

All the best to A - glad to hear she's out of there and hope she's able to stay. If so, you'll have to report back about the celebratory food!

And hope DD3 is recovering from her ordeal.

somewherebecomingrain · 28/10/2013 21:29

Hi all thanks for your thoughts re half term.

wilson you are right, it's safe to leave 5:2 - you can come back.

Anyway I've joined the ranks of the mini-fasters. 1200 cals - cheese loaf, sprouted bread ( bigchoc thanks for tip) and three squares of fudge. Then nothing. Told myself I can have it tomorrow.

tip congrats on auntie hood! How lovely to have a new baby around.

bssh and whoever mentioned boredom I totally obsess about food now. I enjoy it inordinately. At a deep cellular level I never knew before. I feel more sensitive to nutrition - empty cals do much much less for me. And Yy to planning my food.

BigChocFrenzy · 28/10/2013 21:45

somewhere Glad you've joined the sprouted club. For breakfast, I had the sprouted wheat with dates bread, half with smoked salmon, Philly and toms, half with La Rustique cheese slices - they heat in the m/w like a fondue. Total yum calorie bomb.

Seems like a number of us have gone over to the dark side on our NFD today - pizza, choc, crisps - depravity tastes so good.

Strange how FDs are so much easier. I don't fancy choc at all then. My self-control only has an on/off switch, not a rotating knob to set power levels.
Smile

whimsicalname · 28/10/2013 22:25

Love that about your on/off knob big. Great way to put it.

I've done alright today. Probably about 450 cals, which after 3 or so hours sleep is pretty good. will have herbal tea and some choc once the baby's in bed. No breakfast, miso soup with tofu and spinach for lunch, eggs, salsa, courgette and half a slice of bread for dinner. Oh, and 3 Monster Munch. We can't get them here, so rely on friends to smuggle them in dfor the boys. A shame to let such precious bounty go to waste (although it reminded me I don't rreally like them).

Well done fellow Monday fasters.

rubbishfamily333 · 28/10/2013 22:44

Thank you all for the support today on my first fast day! I survived and came in at 503 cals! I never would have thought I could manage it, I'm off to bed soon before I go on an eating rampage Wink

BigChocFrenzy · 28/10/2013 22:56

Rubbish Fantastic, you've managed your 1st 500 cal FD !
Flowers
Npw you know you can do it. You can look forward to your next FD.

whimsical Well done too. I find lack of sleep makes FDs tiring and is fatal for causing munchies on NFDS.

Night all

WilsonFrickett · 28/10/2013 23:31

Think I went off track last week because I couldn't obsess about food on my FD. All I do is think about food. But at least it's better than eating it!

Night all.

somewherebecomingrain · 29/10/2013 06:47

wilson Grin

BetsyBell · 29/10/2013 07:34

Food obsessing: I just remembered about times (during my pre 5:2 weightloss) when I would go through all the stages of preparing and eating a meal in real time in my head!

Like bigchoc, and many others I suspect, I also only have an on/off switch so I haven't found myself needing to do this on a fast day. I should perhaps try it again on NFDs sometimes when the pig out monster wants to play...

OP posts:
CuckooAtchooUhOh · 29/10/2013 08:52

Mornin' All

Am attempting a fd today. Feel a little out of control atm which I'm sure is hormonal, whatever, it is not doing me any favours to be in gannet mode!

Have thought about the positive difference I could make between now and Christmas if I put mind to it, and how lovely it would be to get there and not have the usual moments of self loathing that I have reached yet another Christmas as a fat wobbly lump!

Even though I won't be target weight, I'll be a lot bloomin closer and can feel proud for making a decent start. And I'll look at lot better in photos with fewer chins!

Anyone else fasting today?? At bare minimum will do a mini fast on 16:8, but really going for a proper fast as I love the feeling of achievement I get (not to mention flatness) the day after.

CuckooAtchooUhOh · 29/10/2013 08:53

So let's get off to proper start.......

CuckooAtchooUhOh · 29/10/2013 08:54

.......................... CLENCH .........................

CuckooAtchooUhOh · 29/10/2013 08:55

and.............. DRINK WATER ..............

TheLeastAccomplishedBennetGirl · 29/10/2013 09:00

Fast days are certainly getting easier for me

Yesterday managed to stay below 300 cals, resisting birthday cake and chips, and cake at soft play.

This WOE has opened my eyes to how badly I snacked before. I fooled myself by eating home cooked meals, but ignored the shit I would shovel in between times.

Thank you for all the inspirational stories here - am off to weigh in very soon, fingers crossed my first stone will be gone!

annielewis · 29/10/2013 09:31

Morning all, so I didn't do too badly yesterday in spite of Devils food cake which arrived with my mother! Managed to come in at around 650 cals.

Well done rubbish, great first FD, you will find it gets so much easier - and I'm only on week 2!!

Does anyone else have a problem with their families being 'feeders'? Mine are terrible for bring chocolate and cake and all sorts and then getting a bit funny if you don't eat!!!! Nightmare!!

Anyway - got on the scales this morning and have lost nearly 4 lb since starting this WOE properly, am on week 2 and am soooooo chuffed!!

Am now at 11.8 which is at least heading in the right direction. Am a shortarse so my BMI is about 29 at this weight.

Anyway, it has confirmed that this is the right plan for me to do and is sooooo much easier than the millions of other 'diets' ive done (seriously, have tried them all!)

Sorry for long post but am really happy and wanted to share!! Have not really told many people in RL that I am doing this yet.
