The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

Lurkers and new starters: please just jump in and post - you'll find a lot of support here and we’re a friendly bunch.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through the fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Fast day fail Hmm.

It's half term and made a cheese loaf with my ds. Ate virtually all of it. Now wondering whether to try again tomorrow. There isn't really a good day this week! Not one! They all involve kids, outings, meet ups, parties.

Should I just try not to eat till midday instead and mfp myself. I think that might be more practical.

somewherebecomingrain · 28/10/2013 12:56

What are others with school age kids doing for half term?

MelanieCheeks · 28/10/2013 13:05

crystal definitely plan to keep busy on a FD! I try to have some fairly mindless repetitive work to do, and I always go out in the evening to running training or dance class.

rubbish there are LOADS of soups that are well under 500 calories, just read the labels. I like spicy tomatoey ones, or chicken noodle is very comforting.

annie and jammie, there's no "right" way to do fasting - find what works for you. If that's a 24 hour window, then do that. If it's a skipped breakfast and light lunch and dinner, then that's fine too. Experiment and see which your body feels best on.

eatriskier · 28/10/2013 13:22

rubbish have a coke zero if you want one. I find it helps me quite often. Just don't drink them all the time like i've been doing recently

Full compliment of family in the Riskier household at the moment. DD has been sent home from nursery with a temperature Sad. DH picked her up and she came in and asked for a drink and then to go to bed. DS has been a bit funny all weekend too.

MelanieCheeks · 28/10/2013 13:32

I love diet ginger eer and shandy (Tesco). Only drink them on FDs.

Hot water with a slice of lemon is another favourite.

MelanieCheeks · 28/10/2013 13:32

beer, not eer......

whimsicalname · 28/10/2013 13:51

Hot water and lemon is a fave here too. But today is going to be a serious tea day after probably 3 hours sleep. I weighed myself this morning and am same as last week (137 lbs) which isn't surprising. I'll be interested to see what a day's fasting does, especially as lots of eating out has rather bunged me up. I don't usually weigh another day, but might in the interest of science!

BetsyBell · 28/10/2013 13:57

Half term fasting: remembering not to start eating until later as I know I won't want to stop once I've unleashed the eating monster. There's no way I'll manage my usual fast day tiny lunch when the kitchen is in easy reach.

Kept busy until now, still plenty I need to be getting on with but I've run out of energy! Cup of tea needed I suspect...

Good news is that making food for the DCs on a FD no longer fills me with frustration! Not even the bacon sandwiches.

NFDs may be more problematic actually Grin

Chocupid · 28/10/2013 14:15

FD here too, had nothing but herbal tea up to now, but struggling with this awful weather. Feel I want to comfort eat... Help!
(Off for another hot tea)
I need this to be a good one as I ate so much chocolate yesterday I'm surprised I didn't wake up in a bloody foil wrapper. tut!

rubbishfamily333 · 28/10/2013 14:22

Well so far on my fast day, I was very hungry this morning! I have already drank a 1.5 litre bottle of water, had a coke zero and now having a Heinz squeeze soup (basically cuppa soup)

Tonight will be pork loin with salad! Would prefer vegetables with it as its cold but as I've just moved house I don't have a cooker yet Hmm just a microwave and grilling machine and a slow conner which I rubbish at using.

I will google microwaving vegetables I think!

CuckooAtchooUhOh · 28/10/2013 14:58

Somewhere what I am doing this half term is FAILING apparently!

Some days you just know it ain't happening! I keep thinking about Bssh mainlining choc at her Mil and makes me feel better. Now I know you're also off track I feel better still. Am looking to Bssh tmw for inspiration - if she is good I may feel encouraged (no excuses) to get back on it. If she is still bad - well what can I do without good examples to follow!?? I am cold, pmting and frankly looking for any excuses Hmm.

I followed you lot on the summer hols threads and there was lots of wagon falling going on but no trouble getting back into it for most. So I'm thinking - wing it this week, be good where can, but otherwise have a holiday and straight into 4:3 maybe for the next couple weeks (after half term)

Besides, am making Pom Pom animals with dd on sofa in front of 'Camp Rock' - if I don't eat choc with her she will be very upset HmmHmm

join us on the dark side good luck with whatever you're planning!

BetsyBell · 28/10/2013 15:04

cuckoo I'm thinking I'll make today a good fast day but won't bother too much with Thursday's. I've already made it to 3pm so no point giving up today.

I am aboslutely not thinking about the ginger and spices dark chocolate in the cupboard...

BigChocFrenzy · 28/10/2013 15:08

eat, Bssh, Annie, all other Londoners: I hope everyone's windows etc remain ok in the storms.

somewhere Life gets in the way sometimes, but 52 is so flexible. Why not enjoy the half-term holiday properly and add an extra FD or 2 afterwards ?

rubbish Loads of quite decent ready meals or salads for 300 cals. Solid meals are usually more filling. Meal and a soup ?

Jammie I found 16:8 was great for maintenance after losing my first 10 lb and also to get more used to fasting. However, for me at least, I didn't lose weight, just maintained. Also, I think 24-hr mini-FDs instead of the 36-hr FDs work the same if you manage the weekly deficit of about 3500 cals. Otherwise, maybe slower weight loss, but as always YMMV.

BigChocFrenzy · 28/10/2013 15:10

My weekend had a net cal deficit for the first time in my life, so wi this morning showed 1.2 kg / 2.6 lb loss since last Monday
Grin

My NFD today is a rest day from training, but sandwiched between Sunday's 3½hrs and Tuesday CrossFit. So, high protein, moderate carbs with 8-9 portions veg and fruit. All this within TDEE means a no-choc day, tough with my username.
Sad

somewherebecomingrain · 28/10/2013 15:10

cuckoo I like your logic!

That is helpful. So we're all failing, but in a rescuable way!

After my fast free summer hols I gained half a stone and lost it in one fast day. But then proceeded to plateau for two months. So was I actually thinner than the scales said before the hols, and the plateau was a sort of invisible weight gain that I then had to tease off?

I can't help feeling weight isn't what it seems.

Also with this losing another half a stone very suddenly.

But yes it was v easy - indeed a relief - to fast after the hols blow out.

And betsey not eating to midday is doable and will mitigate a week off.

Talkinpeace · 28/10/2013 15:17

The annual view of 5:2
24 weeks strict fasting
24 weeks aware fasting
4 weeks "stuff it its the holidays"

This week is one of those for me.
Cos I became an auntie again yesterday so am in no mood to fast.

HellesBellesThinksSometimes · 28/10/2013 15:24

rubbish you can steam veg in the microwave.
Add a tablespoon of water to the veg in a microwavable container. Cover with cling film and cook on high for 2-3 mins. Root veg should be cut fairly small and thin. Cauliflower or broccoli broken into individual florets.

CuckooAtchooUhOh · 28/10/2013 16:55

Tip - tell us something really dirty like.........
...you're Snacking?????????.......

southeastdweller · 28/10/2013 16:57

Bssh Hope your house is OK upon your return. Everything was fine in my bit of south east London this morning.

Feeling a bit blue, tired and I think because of the extra hour of darkness I'm craving comfort food like nobody's business. NFD but I haven't fasted for two weeks and feel like I've put weight on. True to form I couldn't wait to December to drink the Baileys I bought on Thursday and had a few glasses last night. Theatre tonight should keep me out of trouble and shift my pity-party for a few hours and I'm fasting tomorrow.

CuckooAtchooUhOh · 28/10/2013 17:00

Oh and Congrats! on the new niece (I recently got one of those). Hope niece and mum are well. Have some Cake Cake Cake - only to be consumed between meals! Wink

Talkinpeace · 28/10/2013 17:02

LOL cuckoo
I'm having Pizza for supper on a Monday, having had a poached egg muffin for lunch Grin
I don't snack, I never did. That is why I found the transition to fasting very easy - as I always went from supper to lunch without eating on week days.

southeast
Same number of hours of darkness, just at the other end of the day.
And the thing is that even if you go haywire for a week or two, when your brain is back in the right place the body will swiftly follow.

BsshBossh · 28/10/2013 17:04

southeast yes, I texted our neighbours who said everything fine except one fence panel which as come down. Phew!

Right, have worked out my half term fasting strategy: I will do Fast 5 (eating within a 5 hour window thereby getting a fast in but eating restrictive calories) Tuesday through Thursday.

WilsonFrickett · 28/10/2013 17:16

Hi all, just signing in for a little distraction on what is the toughest hour of the FD, the pre-tea energy dip!

Lots of people struggling with half term I see. Just to say the Scottish half term was two wks ago and I ate my own bodyweight in pasta on our Italian hols. That was followed by an exceptionally odd and stressful week last week where I crashed off the wagon with a spectacular display of stress eating. Today - guess what? Perfect FD. And I'm thinking of taking advantage of DH being away to 4:3 this week.

The moral of the story is - this is the most flexible woe like, ever. Tweak it to suit you this half-term and go back to stricter 5:2/whatever next week.

If I can do this you can

eatriskier · 28/10/2013 17:21

southeast we're all ok here. Our neighbours aren't though because they are idiots who leave their windows open and bugger off for days on end. Their windows are blown open and hanging off, nets are ripped down and blinds buggered and all their windowsill items either on the drive or presumably in their bedroom. Not going to do anything about it though, considering one of them threatened to kill our DD when she was 5 months old.

eatriskier · 28/10/2013 17:21

Congrats tip Hope you've got some bubbles planned too
