The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

Lurkers and new starters: please just jump in and post - you'll find a lot of support here and we’re a friendly bunch.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through the fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Morning, well today is my first ever fast day, it's crazy stormy winds and I've chose today not to eat. Feeling very unprepared as I didn't make a soup as planned.

Any tips for ready made soups I could have if I need them?

I'm going to be at work until 3pm so was thinking maybe I won't eat until then? Or have a cuppa soup if I need it? Any other ideas?

rubbishfamily333 · 28/10/2013 07:12

Ps I don't drink tea or coffee

BsshBossh · 28/10/2013 07:17

Welcome newcomers!
Crystal well done.
Cuckoo - hurrah, a fellow mainliner Grin. Well, last day at MIL's so the mainlining of food will continue until tomorrow morning. Tomorrow we're driving back to London and DH will be fasting too so that will be easy. Really looking forward to fasting - my tummy is elastic and can stretch to accomodate overeating but I feel a bit bleurgh about all this food these days (but not guilty - I'm rarely guilty about food).

BsshBossh · 28/10/2013 07:18

Good luck Monday fasters!

Any Londoners on this thread? How's London looking in the storm? I'm dreading coming home tomorrow to see if our house and garden are okay or not...

BsshBossh · 28/10/2013 07:22

Crystal I'm not bored on FDs cause I keep busy. Also I spend all my free time (when not working, at gym or looking after DD post-school) looking at recipes and watching food programmes and planning NFD eating Grin. Seems to work!

eatriskier · 28/10/2013 07:35

Hi guys, thanks for all the congrats. Sorry to burst on then bugger off for a bit. Very busy and exhausting weekend.

Welcome all new comers and congrats losers. Not Lovers as this just corrected too. But I suppose the lovers need some congrats as well Wink

Fd here for me. Mondays always go a bit better than Thursdays so Monday will be my 500 fast and Thursday will be my mini one.

bssh were in the burbs here and it's well blowy, tumbleweed everywhere (well, Essex tumbleweed so bin bags and recycling). At the moment it looks like dh can get to work but I'd sort of prefer him not to try. Our bad neighbours have left their house (and dog Shock) unattended again as they are often want to do. They've lost a window.

annielewis · 28/10/2013 07:43

Bssh I'm N London and its not looking too bad so far - not sure if the worse is still to come though!

rubbishfamily333 if you look online www.fatsecret.com/recipes/collections/nutrition/low-calorie/under-100-calorie/Soups.aspx for ideas, or Ainsley Harriot Szechuan hot and spicy cup a soup is only 67 cal (Ithink, 60 something anyway) and doesn't taste like dishwater!! Good luck!

I'm fasting today too I think, supposed to be going to a kids birthday party later so i think its going to be more damage limitation than anything! Half term is potentially going to be a bit tricky!!!!

Does anyone else just skip brekkie everyday and try and limit intake rest of the week, I know this doesnt make it 5:2 but just don't want to undo any good work so far!

Stay safe in the storms and good luck fasters!

eatriskier · 28/10/2013 07:51

Yay. Routes blocked into London here now. Dh not able to go till later. It's not that I really want him for company just that I don't want him travelling till it calms down a bit

wrigglebum · 28/10/2013 08:15

We're in London today, having a half term trip. Any suggestions for what to do with a 4yo and 18mo boys in a windy London? We were thinking bus trip through London, trip to Hamleys and then to Tate modern. We did Natural History Museum yesterday and Science Museum last year.

HellesBellesThinksSometimes · 28/10/2013 08:17

Sorry to jump in with an unrelated post but I am getting this implant taken out. Yet again my totm is seriously knacked-up (that's the clinical term) and I have been pms' d for the past three weeks so delicious food is gone and I have been pigging out on stodge and energy-boosters (aka choccy bikkies). I was fine with the old one but the one they put in 6 months ago has been a nightmare. Anyone else had the same woe-busting experience?

wrigglebum · 28/10/2013 08:20

Oh and hello Trying2bMindful- I think we were on an antenatal thread together (May 2012).

jammiedonut · 28/10/2013 08:41

Good morning all, another newbie here. I started last week and today will be my third fd. Hopefully someone can help me clear something up as I feel as if I am cheating compared to a friend of mine also doing 5:2. If I know I'm fasting I will have dinner fairly early (5pm) so that I can eat dinner at the normal time (around 7/8pm) the next day. As more than 24 hours will have passed I thought that would be okay? It certainly helps me mentally to know I've not gone a day without my dinner! My friend however will have dinner at 7, fast the next day, then have breakfast the following day ( so fasting at least 36 hours), and thinks I should do the same. Is that right? I certainly prefer my way, but will obviously change if it's not quite right!

rubbishfamily333 · 28/10/2013 08:44

So starting weight today is 10.9 stone ConfusedConfusedConfused

Need to get down to 9 stone!

Does anyone else feel worried about not eating all day? How silly but that's how I feel!

lucyintheskywithdinos · 28/10/2013 08:51

I'm not fasting today (Tuesdays are an easy FD for me). We are off to hide from the rain in soft play, where I will drink lots of coffee because DD3 is early waking at the moment. 5.30 this morning, 4.30 yesterday!

It's a 2 party week this week here, one celebrating our friend's release from Yarls Wood today and a Halloween party on Thursday. FDs will be Tuesday and Friday I think.

eatriskier · 28/10/2013 09:09

helles I have a mirena and its not causing me any issues like that (though opinion seems divided), but years ago I had the jabs and that's what I felt like. Also this is now the lowest weight I've been since before I started those jabs at 18. I blame them a lot!

jammie There's no right and wrong way. A lot of us do your method because we find that easiest to do. In the book MM suggests having breakfast and dinner. I know some people from other forums that do the same method as your friend. Personally I would say do what suits you best. If I had all my calories in the am I'd be starving and would fail miserably at fasting. Up till now DH fasted more like your friend, but 2 months in he's not so worried about the fasted state and is switching to just dinner. That's the beauty of this woe, you can do it in whichever way feels best.

rubbish I never really worried about not eating all day. When I started this I told myself that I've done this plenty of times whilst ill so its nothing much. And all this time later I quite enjoy it. Good luck, you will be fine and remember - you can have that tomorrow.

rubbishfamily333 · 28/10/2013 09:31

I no diet drinks are not great but if worse comes to worst then is it ok to have a diet coke? Or coke zero? Please say yes Grin

somewherebecomingrain · 28/10/2013 09:52

Hiya. Fasting and a bit cross. Remember you lot. Feel better immediately.

HellesBellesThinksSometimes · 28/10/2013 09:53

Eat I had no problems with the mirena either but they wouldn't put another in because I was 5 years a little bit late getting it removed Hmm

Rubbish I never go all day without food if i'm working. When hormonal urges allow me to fast, I have an egg for breakfast as I get car sick if I don't eat. I have a chicken salad or bean stew or similar high protein and veg, low carb lunch with a piece of fruit. Dinner is almost always as much white fish or prawns as I can eat with a huge pile of veg. And I always have a chocolate truffle at the end of the day. I end up on 600 as a rule but i am losing weight and it suits me far better than a full day fast - I'm too much of a cow to manage it without killing someone.

On non-work+fastdays, I liquid-fast til about 4 or 5 then have a huge meal incorporating lean meat/fish, some sort of complex carb and, again, a huge pile of veg.

This is a new lifestyle - not a diet - so you need to find a woe that will suit your life rather than making life difficult for yourself by forcing yourself into something that is unnatural for you.

My advice is to try a liquid fast and see how far you get. The caveat is, if you are drinking plenty but start feeling ill, have a cup a soup or other low-calorie filler. That isn't failure - remember, we're all about the long term changes here :)

MrsFlorrick · 28/10/2013 09:54

Wrigglebum. Mine (2 and 4) love natural hist and science museums. We go regularly.

The only thing they like at Tate Modern is running up and down the turbine hall. They have little interest in the art work.

There is the Transport museum in Covent Garden. It's fab and your two would love it.

Althernatively there is the Naval museum in greenwich which is amazing. But as its windy you can't take a river ferry there today.

You could walk from hamleys to Transport museum and then get a bus to Tate modern.

Funny I am waiting for the trains to run again so I can take my two to transport museum today. We are London part of Kent so need overground trains which have just started running again.

Enjoy your trip. Grin

Sophiste · 28/10/2013 10:04

MrsF I was just about to recommend the London Transport Museum too! We had such a successful visit there in the summer. Heaven on earth for little ones and lots to interest the adults too. Our 6yo is still raving about the Tube driver simulator - she now thinks she can drive a train Smile.

Am v. glad I moved my car last night as a huge tree came down right across the road (Islington). My neighbour's Mercedes is not looking pretty as a result.

NFD here after inadvertent 4:3 last week and lost of energetic tennis at the weekend. Feeling good!

wrigglebum · 28/10/2013 10:17

Ooh, thanks guys, transport museum sounds amazing! DS is very happy at the mo stuck on the no10 in heavy traffic! Now need to check southwest trains are running as we're going on to BIL's in Surrey later.

Not2bObvious · 28/10/2013 10:18

Coming to the end of my weekend away and feel like a stuffed/bloated warthog - look like one too I dare say! Tried on my size 12 m&s jeggings this morning and the term over stuffed sausage sprang to mindConfused
Serious FD planned for tomorrow, then 16:8 mini fast Wednesday, FD Thursday, 16:8 nfd Friday. I believe I'm looking at about 2 weeks to undo the gain I've made. Strangely excited about undoing the mischief, maybe it's cause I am confident it can be turned about without too much ado. Hoping to get home without any drama but with planes you never can tell, think my route is unaffected by the storms. Why is it is I never come home from a holiday feeling rested, feel like I need a day off to recover from my days off!

Not2bObvious · 28/10/2013 10:19

Oh yeah I remember why
WineCakeWine x lots

jammiedonut · 28/10/2013 10:26

Thank you, I definitely feel the way I am doing it is more sustainable for me, and may move on to 16:8 as it may be an even better way. Definitely more enjoyable than I expected which is always a good sign two weeks in!

Trying2bMindful · 28/10/2013 11:33

hello! Yes it is I from the May 2012 postnatal thread. They all disappeared!!
Have a lovely day in London. Your plan sounds excellent with 2 young boys, although steel yourself for hamleys. It is mental Grin
