Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 thread number 29 - The C word party season is not too far off, come join us and drop a few pounds. Warning! This way of eating is so easy you may never want to stop...

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

Lurkers and new starters: please just jump in and post - you'll find a lot of support here and we’re a friendly bunch.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through the fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Before 5:2 I used to let my DD snack on crisps etc after school and spoil her appetite for dinner. No more!

CrystalDeCanter · 27/10/2013 00:25

Well done eatriskier your pics are amazing. 5st loss in 6 months is incredible.

BsshBosh I was shocked when I moved to Aus about how ingrained snacking is here, everyone seems to have morning tea (cakes), afternoon tea (more cakes) as well as regular meals. And surprise surprise there's a massive obesity problem.

BigChocFrenzy · 27/10/2013 09:40

Morning all. Any other idiot forgot about the clocks changing ?!!
Well, 3 of us were queuing at the gym door, so you are not alone.

Any other worse idiot FDing with me today ?

On my mini-FD yesterday, supper was 2700 cals (within acceptable range) so plenty of energy for Sunday at the gym:
HIIT spin, Zumba, weights for secondary muscle groups, skip, walk. Total training time about 3hrs, so I'll allow myself the full 500 cals, in protein shakes.

somewherebecomingrain · 27/10/2013 09:49

bigchoc how do you eat 2700 in one meal? Curious!

bssssh yes 5:2 has really helped me set a better example to my kids and manage their diets better. I'd imagine they felt like me (constant snacks hunger). Now it's set meal times and less, healthier, much more structured snacking.

I seem to be 11 stone on my Sunday morning weigh in (after 2 nfds). That means I'm officially no longer overweight and I've lost 17lb over about 18 weeks. I am quite astonished.

I would particularly like to say to anyone plateauing out there that as I think betsey said I did yoyo for ages between 11.3 and 11.7. Then suddenly (after a week on mfp) I was 11. It just suddenly dropped off.

I will probably bibble around 11 for a few weeks.

MrsFlorrick · 27/10/2013 12:26

Eatriskier. Wow. Thanks Amazing. You look great. My weightless is slightly more than yours but over 2 years. So I don't win any prizes and its all been done with various different diets too not just 5:2.

I have a strict week ahead. Two weeks of over indulgence really. I just about got back into it when DH got loads of Thai food junk yesterday and wineWine so yesterday was a mega blowout in the end.

I still have 8lbs to go to goal. So I need to knuckle down and get there.

Did think about my goal of bmi of 21 and what GP said about my ideal bmi being between 20 and 21 (v small frame here). So once I get to goal I may actually need to lose an extra pound or two. But hey it's still getting to goal that counts.

But with lots of Wine and blowout junk food, I won't get there I will in fact be heading in the opposite direction.

So must try much much much harder!!

BigChocFrenzy · 27/10/2013 14:32

somewhere Eat pizza, chips & ice with a group of young male lifters / boxers after training and 2700 cals is with restraint! Just as well it is only Saturdays, though. They have TDEEs of 4000+, I don't.

Since 52ing I do eat masses more veg & salad, which amuses everyone. Also no snacks and I only eat once or twice per day. I feel so much better and my bod looks tighter, even when scales only change slowly.

FD today was excellent. I had so much energy. 3hrs hard training, followed by a long cooldown walk in beautiful sunshine. Just had a 140 cal protein shake, my first cals in 19 hours. I think I have now worked out my optimum nutrition and training plan for the weekends. This is my WOL.

Dotty342kids · 27/10/2013 15:28

Afternoon all! Gosh, the extra hour today is really dragging on Smile. Kids were at different sleepovers last night but DH still woke me before 7.00 - I'll leave it to your imaginations why......
Children are now endlessly arguing over a game of draughts sigh

Anyway, enough of my Sunday woes. AFter my epic 27 minute hooping session on Friday I'm covered in bruises again and yesterday couldn't even manage 10 seconds Shock. Going to have a go again in a few minutes though the bruises are still very visible so don't fancy my chances.
Pizza express for dinner tonight but have eaten very lightly so far today so shouldn't be too horrendously far over TDEE.
Half term plans have meant a shuffling around of fast days so won't be fasting as usual with you Monday folk. Tues / Thurs this week for me.

Enjoy your Sundays everyone and hope you all survive the storms Grin

BigChocFrenzy · 27/10/2013 18:08

somewhere Congrats on your healthy weight milestone. Really good steady weight loss.

BsshBossh · 27/10/2013 18:18

Have been mainlining crisps, cake and Halloween chocolates (my DD's Blush) this weekend. I just seem to be ravenously hungry (but not pregnant). Do you think I can legitimately blame it on sheer greed being bored at MIL's house the storm?

kerry85 · 27/10/2013 19:03

Hi everyone, this is my first time on the big thread and I'm just after some advice please :)
I'm on my second week of the 5:2 diet and I have been able to cope with the fasting days quite well. After week 1 I lost 3lb and I'm due to weigh myself tomorrow morning. However I stepped on the scales this morning and I've got a feeling I've just maintained and not lost anything.
I think this is because I struggle to stick to my TDEE which is 1800 calories.
My husband and I enjoy a takeaway at the weekend and a glass of wine and we tend to take the children out and end up eating out as well.
I was wondering if you think I should try 4:3 instead to make up for the fact that I go over on calories.
(I would like to loose my last stone of baby weight)
Thank you, sorry it's a bit long!

BsshBossh · 27/10/2013 19:18

kerry I've just answered your other thread. I always significantly overeat my TDEE Friday through Sunday due to socialising and no proper routine but I counterbalance this by undereating my TDEE Monday through Thursday (including non-fast days and less than 500 cals for FDs). I'm still losing weight. Just take the weekly view of calories.

MelanieCheeks · 27/10/2013 19:21

Hi Kerry and welcome!

2 weeks is far too short a period to make any judgement on. Give it a month before you assess, and remember that one pound a week is the average.

Talkinpeace · 27/10/2013 20:01

kerry
I do not own a set of scales - so I cannot go near them at the weekend
bet method IMHO Grin
lock yours in the boot of a friends car for a month
non scale measures will tell you how you are doing
a wee weighs nearly a pound after all

BigChocFrenzy · 27/10/2013 20:01

Bssh you're obviously having a yummy NFD Envy
Never mind, my NFD tomorrow. That's the great thing about 52 !

I've prepared quinoa and rhubarb separately for lunch tomorrow (also chicken and multiple veg). I'd thought the quinoa would be part of my main course, but had a sudden thought:
Does anyone with more quinoa experience think it could combine well with rhubarb as a dessert - with vanilla, cinammon and some oat (!) cream that I have) ??

BsshBossh · 27/10/2013 20:54

Dotty I'm fasting Tuesday this week too as my half term routine is different this week. May even have to shift Thursday FD to another day (perhaps my first ever back to back FDs?)...

So... NFD Monday tomorrow but not truly woohoo cause I'm in need of a FD (at MIL's and lots of family eating events).

whimsicalname · 27/10/2013 20:55

BCF you could use it as a kind of crumble topping perhaps? I'm not a huge fan of it outside savoury dishes, although I sometimes bung a cup full into a loaf of bread if I cooked too much.

I'm only popping in, not stopping, but have enjoyed my 6 days of eating perhaps a little too much and now I'm steeling myself for a fd tomorrow. I'm kind of looking forward to it, but more like looking forward to how I'll feel when it's finished.

My parents have been staying all week, and don't like to eat with the kids in the evening so I feel like I've done nothing but cook all the time. Still, they go tomorrow (although then we're catching up with them at the weekend) so I can do a fd and my husband is eating lunch out at work so nothing to do for him. Tuesday I'm going to a pie and jewellery party at a friend's house, Weds is book club with take out, Thurs I'll do another fd and Friday we're away for the weekend, so no more cooking for a week!

whimsicalname · 27/10/2013 21:05

Sorry, my dad just came racing in with a crying toddler. I also meant to welcome new people and congratulate all losers! Weigh day for me tomorrow.

BigChocFrenzy · 27/10/2013 21:06

Thanks whimsical

Coveredinweetabix · 27/10/2013 21:08

Evening all
I'm going to be back on the 4:3 wagon along with regular exercise for five weeks from tomorrow as I want to lose 6lbs so that I'm down to the same weight as I was when I met DP on our anniversary. I think it should be doable but I'm going to have to be a lot more disciplined on my mid-week NFDs.
Eat - congratulations! That's amazing. I've only looked at your's and Bssh's photos and find it fascinating that you both look like what I think of as "thin" people. I think I've always had it in my mind that even if I lost weight, I'd look fat as I am a "fat" person. But I'm not. I've just chosen to eat more than I need to and do less exercise than is good for me.
Some other good losses on here. Again. Its such a good thread to be on.
Good luck to all of those fasting tomorrow (which includes me).
Could one of you hoopers send me a link to wherever you got your hoop from? I'm tempted to try it. I'm 5'4" and currently have a BMI of 26ish.
Thanks!

juniper81 · 27/10/2013 21:46

Hello all, can I join?
I'm thinking of doing this as my BMI is 24.9 and I can't seem to stop my weight slowly creeping ever higher. I don't exercise much and since turning 30 I can't seem to eat like I used to!
I'll try to start at the end of the week - is it worth getting the book? I'd like a reference for the calorie counts of different foods to help with meal planning.
Also, do you know if this is ok for women TTC?
Thanks!

Talkinpeace · 27/10/2013 22:17

juniper
welcome - there was a thread on AIBU where two lovely ladies said that they conceived while doing 5:2 .... the evidence is frankly nil either way
BUT
if you eat well, the fact that you are skipping a couple of meals a week should do you less harm than the benefit you will gain by being a healthy weight going into pregnancy

best place to check calories is MFP - link in the OP

Trying2bMindful · 27/10/2013 22:28
Smile Hi everyone, can I join you please? My BMI has crept up over the overweight mark to obese and I need to do something about that. Plus I had PE with PFB and before we TTC #2 I want to ensure I am at a healthy weight as it is the only risk factor for PE which i can control. So, I have the driver but I need to keep that motivation. well done eat you are inspiring!! This WoE sounds right up my street & even my DH has said he will give it a go. I am waiting to hear when a client meeting will be held before I decide on my FDs but expect Mon/Tues or Mon/Wed to make sense most weeks.....
MelanieCheeks · 27/10/2013 22:34

Juniper- the book doesn't have any calorie counts in it. best for that is mfp or other similar.

Personally, I don't think it's the best plan if TTC. It's a definite nonno if pregnant. The science behind fasting is that it doesn't create new cells but concentrates on repairing existing cells. But when you're pregnant, creating new cells is exactly what you want to do.

If your bmi is already in a healthy range, is there a reason why you want to lose more weight? Or is it the other health benefits that you're interested in?

CuckooAtchooUhOh · 27/10/2013 23:05

Evening All! Need to catch up but thought I'd just pop in quickly to help keep head in right place! At glance can see new names - Hello and goodluck! Can also see that Bssh has immediately made me feel better.

Started this morning with a full Sunday roast ready by 11.45 lol! Filled up with more than fair share of that, followed by a stodgy pudding and custard. Then basically spent rest of day (looks round for Tip, whispers) snacking. To use an expression of MissStrawb I have played the role of bin today! Did make me Grin to read Bssh mainlining!

Am too faced with half term complications, so am looking to shrink portions where poss first half of week, then may also have to do 2 consecutive day fd's at end of week. Was starting to wonder if I could still put it away as have been so 'good'. Safe to say I can Shock

Looking forward to the detox feeling of a good fast. Nice to be naughty sometimes, but couldn't live like this anymore. Stay safe in the storms (that I managed to only hear about in last hour?!? Hmm and good luck all Monday fasters!!

CrystalDeCanter · 28/10/2013 03:07

Hi all, especially to all the new people joining.

I'm fasting today - it's now 1.20pm and I've eaten nothing, just had 3 cups of tea and some water. I'm at work and just done my w2r1 on c25k during my lunch break which has made me feel brilliant. It's a sunny blustery day here, and I work by the beach so had a fab run/walk along the sea gulping in sea air.

Those of you who have been doing this for ages, how do you cope with being bored on fast days? Doing this WOE has made me realise how much time I spend thinking about food and eating because I'm bored rather than hungry.

Anyway, it was weigh in day today and I'm down 1.9kgs for this past week! Yay me.
