The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason these threads started!

Lurkers and new starters: please just jump in and post - you'll find a lot of support here and we’re a friendly bunch.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

Our previous threads can be found by browsing through the fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Well done kickass, you had a good week. You compensated so well today for Saturday.
Sounds like we'll both be FDing tomorrow, with greenkit and a dozen more !

BsshBossh · 20/10/2013 22:34

alfiemama if you'r egenuinely not hungry enough to eat more than 1200 cals today then that's fine. It gives you leeway to eat more when you want/need too on another day. My worry would be if you consistently ate that low cause I'd imagine that's lower than your BMR (the basic calories needed just to keep your body functioning) and it'll wreck your metabolism in the longrun. Just enjoy without guilt eating on other days so it balances out to your TDEE (minus your FD deficit) across the week.

alfiemama · 20/10/2013 22:39

I think you're right bssh and this is why I can't stick to it. Right off to raid the cupboards. Wink

BigChocFrenzy · 20/10/2013 22:54

Checked my first week of resuming 52. Major Blush Blush:

80 Monday
2600 Tuesday
3000+ Wednesday
290 Friday
4500+ Saturday
3000+ today
TDEE 2250

I never counted NFD cals when I lost 10 lb in spring 52ing, or in maintenance since. I think I've always been this greedy, no change in meals.

The scales say half-pound down from last week Hmm. I'll aim for my TDEE on NFDs and do 52 properly, not like Miss Piggy. I want to lose 10lb and 2ins, kicking own backside hard

BigChocFrenzy · 20/10/2013 23:59

cuckoo are you FDing tomorrow as well ?

CrystalDeCanter · 21/10/2013 03:38

Hello everyone, I used to be on these threads aaaaages ago and I loved it but have rather fallen off the wagon.

Anyway I have finally woken up to myself and my revolting bulk and decided I need to shift 8kg by Christmas! I will be doing this by hardcore 5:2 and exercise. I'm in Australia so will be posting at odd hours but hopefully you'll all be as marvellously supportive as last time.

Lots of Thanks but no Cake as will be doing the no snacking thing this time. Also I need to cut down on the Wine for a while, my poor old liver needs a rest.

CrystalDeCanter · 21/10/2013 03:39

Oh I should say, I'm doing my first fast day today. It's easy so far (currently 1.15pm and I'm not hungry at all. Long may it last.

thinkcan · 21/10/2013 05:11

Aiming to do my first one meal only FD today. I usually do lunch and dinner and am not too strict about keeping below 500 cals. It is now 11am where I am now in Indonesia. Have had one black coffee and lots of water so far and not feeling hungry at all. Also put in over an hour of weights session at the gym this morning. Wish me luck!

peplum41 · 21/10/2013 05:39

Welcome to another Monday morning on the mn 5:2 thread.

I got a bit behind and have just read about a weeks worth of posts. Hello new posters, glad you've found us, its a great support and if you're struggling with hunger, log on brew in hand and I promise you, the hunger dissipates like magic.

I just wanted to mention a thought about diet drinks, I gave up anything artificially sweetened when I started 5:2 back in Feb and the weight was coming off my waist really well which is normally the last place it goes from. However, diet coke has sneaked its evil way back into my life, since September. Even though I have lost lbs, and inches here and there I have gained round my waist! As talkin mentioned it faffs up your insulin, which has a knock on effect with increased appetite and a thick middle.

Hi to crystal and itsa. And to 2obviously, think I've got that wrong, jb30.

alfimama what's this about hair loss and low carb? Intrigued, as seem to be losing hair aswell as fat! I'm your typical PCOS sufferer.

Ramble ramble.

CrystalDeCanter · 21/10/2013 06:24

Hi peplum , you're up early. The info about diet drinks is interesting - they're so bad for us.

Hello thinkcan, well done on the hour of weights. I managed 20 press ups and 40 crunches before collapsing this morning. I'm starting the C25K though so will be running tonight.

It's now almost 4pm and I'm hungry a bit achy and cold. I'd forgotten how cold you get doing the fast days.

eatriskier · 21/10/2013 06:30

Morning all,.
Welcome back crystal
Fast day for me
This diet drink thing is odd to me. I always drunk diet as I've always preferred it. When I started this 5:2 kick I tried to get rid of it in a whole shake up of healthiness but I find my habits like that are a bit cyclical. I'm on the drinks wagon again. Coffee, tea and water aren't enough for me. I definitely drink less but I still have a fizzy drink at least once a day. I actually find they help me on fast days as they don't appear to spike my hunger and the cold drink with flavour sometimes shuts the hunger up. Strange how were all different.

lucyintheskywithdinos · 21/10/2013 07:17

Morning! It looks like lots of us are fasting today!

I'm off to the fruit and veg market today for a bulk buying session. I want parsnips, I adore them. Planning my usual one meal FD.

I'm close to the 11 stone mark now, thinking of doing a 4:3 week to see if I can give myself a boost to see a 10 on the scales for the first time since I was 18 (11 years and 3 DDs ago!).

BetsyBell · 21/10/2013 07:27

Morning all, I'll catch up with weekend posts later I just need to quickly get this down:

I'm flabby as hell and I don't like it.

My weight hasn't changed, 5:2 maintains it fine, despite feasting weekends.

BUT for the first time in 2 years I've barely been exercising and this is not good. I must admit this first half term has been a difficult one for many reasons but I need to not use that as an excuse.

So, new regime: everyday I will put on exercise gear first thing and slot in a run or DVD when I can.

I don't work until late morning most days so this is perfectly achievable. Telling myself I will do something in the evening is not. It doesn't happen.

Ok, thanks for listening! Fast day today and I'll catch up with you later Smile

Hi Crystal Nice to see you back! As you can see I'm attempting to claw my way back on the exercise wagon too. Too wet for running but I have a shelf groaning with lovely ladies who want to get me fit (Jillian, Davina, Tara Lee...) not to mention all the Wii fit, Dance and Zumba.

NO EXCUSES!

Lots more new starters/restarters this weekend - lovely to see you all here :)

Monday's are a popular FD!

Husband slaved away in the kitchen yesterday producing Tom Kerridge's roast belly pork, with bacony lentils and a cabbage salsa. Every single dish was incredibly salty - I've guzzled a bottle of water during the night, and unsurprisingly am 3 pounds up on the sacles this morning - I'll be watching to see how quickly that water retention disappears.

Dotty342kids · 21/10/2013 08:26

Morning all! Had a busy few days so lots to catch up on.
Betsy get out that Wii or a DVD and GET ON WITH IT Smile. You'll feel so much better for it, you know you will!

A usual fasting Monday for me. Had a spare chicken breast knocking about so have got it marinating in the fridge in a low fat yog / tikka paste so hopefully by tonight I can turn that into something tasty. Am thinking of quickly pan frying it, slicing it up and having over a big bowl of salad with a couple of new potatoes for a bit of extra warmth seeing as it's such a grotty day outside.

BetsyBell · 21/10/2013 08:34

I'm in my exercise stuff Dotty! Just got to walk the kids to school then I can get on with it. I'm close to letting them go on their own like they want to so I can get shredded earlier!

Itsaboatjack · 21/10/2013 09:15

Morning. FD day here too.

BB I'm with you on the exercise front, I can't even remember the last time I went running. I do always put some exercise clothes on in the morning though so if I've got time before I have to get changed into work clothes I can squeeze something in. Recently it's often been not much more than a quick 5 mins hula hooping before I have to jump in the shower. I managed to hire a new member of staff now though who seems to be working out, and my assistant manager is back next week from a month long holiday so I should be able to fit a few proper sessions in before we hit the Christmas madness.

MissStrawberry · 21/10/2013 09:18

Apologies for being rubbish as usual at keeping up with you all. Flowers for everyone.

My head is full of worries for my son atm and added to that he stayed at my in-laws last night and wasn't 100% so I fretted even more about him. MIL said he is fine this morning but I am going to see for myself after DD has had her physio as he wanted to spend 2 nights there.

FD today. Thinking how am I going to last when I feel peckish already but not worried about it. Opened the fridge to get a drink, saw some left over mushy peas and thought that will be okay to have and then put them in the bin Shock. Once you start to eat....

Better go. Halfway through cleaning out the Guinea Pig and she has just tipped out all her cereal into the washing basket that she is currently sat in Grin.

BetsyBell · 21/10/2013 09:36

Itsa At least putting the gear on puts you in the right frame of mind - once I'm in work clothes it's never going to happen! I'm going to follow your example and go straight from PJs to sports stuff daily. Even if I just do some squats and press ups that's soemthing.

I am now exercised, in the most sweaty way so should be doing some good! Shower then coffee I think. Stomach is being unusually rumbly for this time of the day.

KickassCoalition · 21/10/2013 09:57

Posted too soon- what's yours called (unless it will out you :))

I know it's early but FD going well so far, I'm going to make it to dinner then have roast chicken and veg.

got to take one of the girls for vaccinations today though which will mean a trip to the supermarket... If I see anything I want I think I'll leave it and have a walk down and fetch it tomorrow.

hope you guys are all doing ok today so far.

eatriskier · 21/10/2013 10:05

Time has disappeared this morning already. Aunt flo has come to visit which may explain the face stuffing since Friday. Dd is at nursery and ds is just settling down for a nap so I'm about to get my exercise on. I won't give in to the munchies. I have a large bowl of Irish stew and a nice pudding for later and I have no need for anything else.

cuckoo13 · 21/10/2013 10:10

Morning All. Fd here.

Have woken up with right cob on. Can tell it's going to be one of those days where in stroppy huffiness, I'll keep banging into things/injuring myself, which will make mood worse, but of course will never admit to.

As can't be arsed with self when like this, have decided to send myself out in this disgusting weather, for a 'run', as punishment. Will prob try to be all cool and like in film, running off my anger. This will in actual fact no doubt be me 'running' (in loosest poss sense of word) so more like stumbling along blindly in rain (that will get worse second I start) and inevitably trip over something invisible before landing face down in pile of cow/horse poo.

Still, that should sort mood out and teach me a lesson for being such a grumpy cow.

Back later 5 mins

BetsyBell · 21/10/2013 10:11

Shower and a big glass of water got rid of the tummy rumble. I can now enjoy my fresh brewed coffee without gulping it down through thirst.

Simple pleasures :)
