Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 thread number 28 - Come and join us! The threads may be getting on a bit but the new starters keep us young and fresh!

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason these threads started!

Lurkers and new starters: please just jump in and post - you'll find a lot of support here and we’re a friendly bunch.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

Our previous threads can be found by browsing through the fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Morning all, especially fellow FDers. I'm aiming for max. 300 cals today.

EatRiskier Glad someone else drinks diet junk too Smile. I once gave up all artificial sweeteners for 3 months, but put on several pounds, so settled for 1 per day limit like you. I find a Coke Zero (poison !) can stop munchies or replace a pud.

Betsy Evening training stops hunger & late munchies. Fasted training massively boosts FD effects and increases energy. Go for it !

Weigh-in today showed I escaped punishment ( 1lb down) after disgraceful gluttony on NFDs, but that won't last. I shall do better.

BigChocFrenzy · 21/10/2013 10:15

Morning cuckoo. Good luck with FD and assorted animal poo.

SerendipityAlways · 21/10/2013 10:24

Very first day on the 5:2 ! Had breakfast (porridge) at 7 and coffee/water since then...wish me luck!

BetsyBell · 21/10/2013 10:40

bigchoc I don't do evening munchies. Grin Sometimes I manage a yoga session in the evening but only enjoy exercise before any eating (ie in a fasted state) so mornings are it for me - if I don't do it then it just won't happen!

I know fasting exercise works - lost loads of weight that way. I also now know that 2 days of fasting keeps the weight increase at bay but if I want to shift any more, or indeed, more importantly for me, tone up and slim down the jiggle then I must get back in the exercise habit! Today' workout is done.

BetsyBell · 21/10/2013 10:49

Serendipity Good luck! Porridge first thing will make it harder I'm afraid - I find myself 'starving' within a couple of hours after porridge. If you must do breakfast I highly recommend a boiled egg with ham or asparagus spears. Protein keeps the hunger at bay in a way cereal based carbs just don't.

Even better would be to skip the breakfast - that's what most of us here do and it's just easier all round. If you can't skip it then challenge yourself to wait an hour longer each fast day - have a couple of hard boiled eggs on standby (fit in a handbag, highly transportable!) that you can eat whilst on the go.

A big glass of water or a hot drink each time you get a hunger pang should help you ride it out.

BsshBossh · 21/10/2013 10:52

Good luck on first fast!

I'm another who puts on gym kit first thing. On FDs I work (from home) at my desk in it after school run then go to gym at lunch time, then home, shower, change, work; on NFDs I go straight to the gym after school run then home, shower, change and work through until school pick up.

FD Monday for me too.

BsshBossh · 21/10/2013 10:53

I exercise fasted too, even heavy weights sessions.

SerendipityAlways · 21/10/2013 11:05

Thanks Betsy for the useful tips! Im a big breakfast fan and cant do without it first thing...plus I was running afterwards so felt I really needed something. Think I will do the boiled egg next time tho as a 40g serving of porridge is TINY...nothing at all like my usual portion!

Greenkit · 21/10/2013 11:10

Morning all, I am on nights tonight so I have had some weetabix and a cup of tea for breakfast, I will fast untill midnight then have my 500cal meal, then fast till 7am where I will have breakfast again.

BetsyBell · 21/10/2013 11:14

Serendipity Running in a fasted state means fat burning rather than using the breakfast calories - if you're looking to lose weight it's the way to go! Curbs your appetite too...

Do read through the OP and links for some amazing advice.

Betsy I'm sooo impressed you don't get late munchies.
Fasted evening training FD / NFD, followed by a shake "mini-meal", stops hunger until I go to bed and boosts my overnight fat burning. Fasted morning training (weekends) makes me ravenously hungry 2 hours later and I want to eat the entire fridge contents.

Shows how we must each tune 52 for our individual quirks Smile

kickass So far so good today ?

somewherebecomingrain · 21/10/2013 11:32

Morning all.

Welcome newbies - can hardly keep track!

Seem to have broken the back of my plateau by eating below TDEE weds/thurs like bsssh for one week.

Weigh in (sat am) suggests I really am 11.3 -exactly a stone lost.

NSV - bought two gap size 12 jeans. My sister said I looked the best for 5 years and 'nearly back to normal' and she'd wondered if I was just going to be a fat person for the rest of my life.

I'm still in denial that I was a fat person but I guess I was. I didn't totally hate the way I looked.

somewherebecomingrain · 21/10/2013 11:34

Ps can I say I'm enjoying all the debate and the ideas on here - thanks bssh peplum bigchoc betsey and everyone for such interesting and motivating posts.

Dotty342kids · 21/10/2013 11:37

I'm another one for morning exercising. Get up, put gym kit on, take kids to school and then straight on to zumba class. Once I'm home just after 10.30 I switch on the emails arse about on Mumsnet and see what's in store for the day, THEN have a shower and get on with the working day.
The though of evening exercise..... shudders
Hi there itsaboat hope all's well with you. I'm stubbornly resting around 10st 5/6 and know full well that in order to shift any more I need to reassess my NFDs. Trying to find the motivation... Smile

annielewis · 21/10/2013 11:41

I ma trying this again after a half arsed attempt previously. Do you all eat normally on non fast days? I really need to shift some weight and feel better about myself dont' really want to do a 'diet' like SW or WW etc.

Also how much are you all losing and in what time frames. Do you do ADF or 5:2?

Just looking for some inspiration really I guess!

Thanks

eatriskier · 21/10/2013 12:11

betsy glad its not just me who doesn't get the evening munchies. I had thought I was alone so just stayed quiet about it Grin

eatriskier · 21/10/2013 12:14

annie The idea is to eat 'normally', the '' there on purpose. I now eat normally for me, but at the start I had to make a concerted effort to eat healthier and not eat junk which was my normal. 'Normal' eating isn't strictly the same as eating normally. The biggest thing you see here though is no snacking even on NFD. Those snack calories can really stack up. Good luck

Not2bObvious · 21/10/2013 12:18

Monday FD here, 1 hour to go til I have my plate of meatGrin Hadn't time to boil an egg this morning so just have extra turkey. Chicken stir fry planned for tonight. Would like to get a run in but the day is looking progressively crap so it mightn't happen. Away for work next 2 days, nfd tomorrow, 16:8 on Wednesday I reckon. I'll have to make the best of it. FD Thursday, then away for the weekend. Which is lovely, just tough from a weight loss perspective. Need a mind shift from loss to maintenance I think. Hope my fellow fasters are doing ok?

BigChocFrenzy · 21/10/2013 12:55

Well done somewhere for coming through your plateau ! A stone is impressive and the compliments from your sister show the new you is really visible.

Talkinpeace · 21/10/2013 13:00

DH out the door at 6.20 this morning - tick
kids up at 7 and breakfasted and packed lunches made - tick

Fast days are excellent things Grin

BigChocFrenzy · 21/10/2013 13:04

I can get munchies anytime I relax on NFDs.
Strangely, neither munchies nor much hunger on FDs, so long as I do total fast until evening post-training shake.

BigChocFrenzy · 21/10/2013 13:08

tip Amazing list ! You are clearly optimised for 52 WOL.

Talkinpeace · 21/10/2013 13:13

Wink On saturday at work I was told that I'm now too slim to be a rottweiler so they will call me the doberman instead

BsshBossh · 21/10/2013 13:18

TiP the doberman love it!

Dotty342kids · 21/10/2013 13:25

Brilliant TIP. I think Smile
