Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason these threads started!

Lurkers and new starters: please just jump in and post - you'll find a lot of support here and we’re a friendly bunch.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

Our previous threads can be found by browsing through the fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Successful fast day here, had shepherd's pie for tea (I had a middle sized bit of the bottom and just a spoon of potato). I'm finding that using a side plate for my meals is helping me to keep my portion size sensible.

I'm cooking tea tomorrow, I really fancy a big steaming bowl of lentil soup, with lots of roasted cauliflower.

sweetie I've always found that I can't diet for the first 12 weeks or so of bfing, I get horrible hunger pangs and can't think straight if I try it! I would focus on good nutrition for the first weeks rather than calorie restriction, then jump on the 5:2 later.

I'm quite enjoying the no snacking, which is something I never ever thought I would say! I can have anything I fancy, but only as part of a meal. I love a bag of Kettle Chips with my lunch and I don't feel riddled with guilt because of it!

BigChocFrenzy · 15/10/2013 23:33

Yesterday was FD1, so today I tried to eat mindfully.
Breakfast: wholegrain bread, cheese, fish paste, veg juice
Lunch was a huge georgeous mound of grated raw veg, umpteen kinds, in a coconut chilli soup, with a sliced chicken breast. Rice pud afterwards.
Tea: small slice pea quiche with tomatoes & mixed peppers
Evening, did a high intensity spin class, followed by a protein shake.
Night, all

BigChocFrenzy · 15/10/2013 23:37

P.S. rubbish I lost 10 lb on 5:2 in spring, then chose to maintain on 16:8 (2 meals, no snacks) with occasional FD, to let my bod reset if necessary. I just restarted 5:2 yesterday to lose the final 10lb.
I'm a real tortoise, because weight crept on over my fifties, so I expect that losing it comfortably will take time for an old bag Grin.
I plan to maintain on 16:8, with 1 FD per week for good health.

Tortoiseonthehalfshell · 16/10/2013 01:31

Morning all! Second FD for the week here. Planning a big salad tonight, with ham and chopped boiled egg. Usually I make a yoghurt/mayonaise dressing with this, but to make it a FD salad I'll have to come up with a lower cal version I think.

Nonetheless, having a great eating week. Yesterday was utterly horrendous (A&E trip with the DDs to get stitches in DD2's head, DD1 started puking, TOTM arrived and my best friend had a major crisis with her drug-addicted ex) so I treated myself to a couple of glasses of wine and some chocolate, and I still came in at TDEE, so I'm all sorts of smug about that.

BetsyBell · 16/10/2013 06:44

tortoise 0% yogurt, lemon juice and pepper does the trick! I stopped eating mayo in favour of this a while back and much prefer if now. In fact mayo is just cloying and unpleasant for me these days so don't use it at all.

Oh and big hugs (((tortoise))) for the other half of your post. X

BetsyBell · 16/10/2013 07:03

rubbishfamily go get yourself a meal soup (200cals for a pot) and eat that with carrot sticks. Cuppa soups are shit, devoid of nutrition and won't fill you up! Have that for lunch then for tea have a big pile of salad leaves and steamed veg with chopped boiled egg and ham, or a piece of chicken baked in a spicey tomato sauce, or salmon fillet baked with lots of fresh grated ginger and lime juice. Or another meal soup!

Those 2 meals will take you to around 500 cals and you will feel satisfied and happy. Easy fast day Smile

rubbish - if I can do it, anyone can as I have had years of food issues. I have been doing the 5:2 since August (feels like a lot less than that which is a good thing in my mind) and had gone from 12 st 4 to 11 st 5. Last Sat had gone back to 11 st 8 and this morning (after an almost FD) I am 11 st 7.2. Last week I wasn't able to fully fast so not surprised I put 3lbs on as I had 2 cooked breakfasts and a 3 course dinner.

Today I can eat. Really want cold toast with lurpak but I think my tummy doesn't like bread so really need to find an alternative as life without toast would be miserable.

lucyintheskywithdinos · 16/10/2013 07:58

NFD today and I have a lunch time party planning meeting! Our friend is being released from Yarls Wood on Thursday, so we are having a huge celebration.

missS if you think it might be wheat! have you tried spelt flour? Wheat causes me a lot of pain, but occasional spelt doesn't!

lucyintheskywithdinos · 16/10/2013 07:59

Ooo...stray exclamation point in there. Smile

eatriskier · 16/10/2013 08:11

misss I have switched to Danish bread or Warburton sandwich thins. My body doesn't much like full on bread now either

Dotty342kids · 16/10/2013 08:25

Morning all. Successful fast day of soup, bit of bread and a couple of triangles of Toblerone. Yum!
NFD and just had a toasted fruit muffin and butter for my breakfast. Smile.
Funny how things change though as having had a carby breakfast I just want a nice soft boiled egg and a few soldiers for lunch, not a large sandwich / crisps / anything else. And maybe a banana and some natural yog. Mmmm, love NFD foods!

MissStrawberry · 16/10/2013 08:36

lucy, I haven't tried spelt flour but will look for it.

eatriskier, I remember you telling me about Danish bread before but I haven't been able to find it. I don't really know what I am looking for so I will look online as if I am doing a delivery booking and see what the packaging is. I like the sound of the sandwich things but can you toast them?

BigChocFrenzy · 16/10/2013 08:42

Morning all.
tortoise Really impressive self-discipline for you to manage TDEE after yesterday from hell. You are a role model.
rubbish Remember to drink lots of water on FDs (and this helps to avoid snacking on NFDs). Good luck !
Dotty Yes, an FD makes me appreciate good quality food the next day, rather than wanting to binge (too much !) or eat junk.

eatriskier · 16/10/2013 09:28

misss not sure if tesco is any good for you but this is the sort of thing:
http://www.tesco.com/groceries/Product/Details/?id=254942498
It's a little smaller than a normal loaf and a lot lighter. Usually hidden away a bit so not immediately obvious but quite often with weight watchers bread

I had toasted thins today. You just need to make sure you put the toaster on a low setting. Same with Danish bread actually, that needs a low setting too.

NotAsTired · 16/10/2013 10:10

rubbish I am shorter than you and used to be size 14 and had a similar weight to you. I lost the weight through calorie control but was not able to sustain the low calories for ever. My weight went back up, this time to a snug size 12, within a matter of a few short months. I then started doing 5:2.

I no longer snack, or have the need to snack, my portion sizes are smaller, I weigh 7 st 10lb and am a size 8. I know I will never be fat again, because its a sustainable lifestyle.

lucy how interesting about using a side plate to have dinner. I eat off a huge white plate. Grin. I know that as long as there is a lot of white showing on the plate, I know my portion sizes are okay, and seeing all that white with my normal sized portion makes me feel that I am eating a posh meal. Wink

NotAsTired · 16/10/2013 10:17

By the way, have I told you guys that I haven't been been this weight since my mid-20s, a whole 20 years ago? Grin

PoshPaula · 16/10/2013 10:42

I am fasting today and I am going to drink loads of water. I will report back on the difference (re: our earlier conversation about feeling famished the next day).
So far - just a coffee and a tea, both with a little milk.
Am at work and have been up since 6.30....

AngieM2 · 16/10/2013 11:37

Decided to have a FD and dear god, I'm off to work! Give me strength and hope its too busy to notice I'm starving and keep me away from the multitude of chocolates and biscuits bought to us by well meaning patients!

invinoveritas51 · 16/10/2013 11:48

Oh bother! No sooner do I haul myself back on the 5:2 wagon than I hurl myself off the other side!

Have returned from a stressful holiday where the only way I could stop myself from saying things I shouldn't was to keep putting food in my mouth - amazingly, only put on a couple of pounds but really need to get a grip and try and get back to a regular weekly downward trend in time for (dare I say it?!) Christmas!

Third time lucky for this week's first FD - Monday was going superbly until I got home from work when all my good work was undone pretty quickly. I started yesterday with all good intentions but DH2B is not particularly supportive of this woe and went on at me to have breakfast so gave in for a quiet life and then found myself picking all day (don't shout at me tip - actually, no! Do shout at me tip!). Today I hit the gym for the first time in 3 weeks so was out of the house by 6.30am leaving himself in bed so am quietly confident that I might succeed today assuming I can eat a sensible supper!

I need a good kick, please!

cuckoo13 · 16/10/2013 13:14

Hello everyone!! waving

I am actually still back on thread 26 (4th Sept) but couldn't wait any longer to say Hi, so just popping in before going back to catch up. Found you all via a google search on 5:2 and can say in the nicest possible way, you have all sent me to sleep each night for the past 2 wks lol!

I started on Sept 19 so today is no.9. Start weight 12st 6lb. I'm 5ft2.5 so need to shift 4 stone. I weigh myself once weekly on day after 2nd FD each week. First week 5lb loss Grin (though was actually after 3 FD), 2nd wk -2lb, 3rd wk -1, and doing my second FD today so will hopefully see a drop tmw.

I'm in it for health benefits as much as weight loss, so will continue to maintain after reaching target. Find it simple/straightforward. Love the benefits so far. Think you are all AMAZING! and so glad to be here now to join in and get to know you all. Hope I don't get too star struck when I hear from a long timer lol!

Talkinpeace · 16/10/2013 13:21

OI invinoveritas get your better half to get his bum in gear and support you in becoming a lean mean fasting machine.
And then STOP SNACKING
Yup I know the feeling about eat / argue : and I have to be really careful about drink loosening my tongue!
THe main thing is to focus on "its only till my next fast" and get back on track ASAP as your brain and body will thank you for it.

PoshPaula · 16/10/2013 13:23

Okay am on second cuppa soup of the lunch break. Am starting to feel less irritable than I was before lunch. How is everyone doing who is fasting today?

invino if you've fasted all day long then it's such a shame to spoil it when you get home in the evening.... but never mind, there's always another day! And leaving for the gym at 6.30 is pretty impressive. Build on this!!

invinoveritas51 · 16/10/2013 13:53

Thanks tip - read, understood and taken on board! I'm going to aim for a 10 pound loss by Christmas which should be doable providing I stick to the rules. I tried to get DH2B to at least read the book so he understands more about it but to no avail....so far. I will persevere! But at least I can get heaps of support here - thank you all!

I too have to be extremely careful after indulging in alcoholic refreshment - you would've thought I'd have learnt by now!

poshp - I only seem to have the motivation to exercise first thing in the morning; once I finish work that's me done for the day so I try and get the workout done before I start in the office; at least then it's over and done with!!

Have just had my lunch of 2 cups of bouillon and am feeling gooood!

Dotty342kids · 16/10/2013 14:01

Welcome to the madhouse cuckoo, you've done brilliantly so far, well done Smile
I've been going since Feb and lost 16lbs in total, most of which were before the summer hols, since which time I've been stuck maintaining.
Could do with shifting another 3-4lbs to be safely in healthy BMI range - it's the NFDs which are my downfall!
