Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 thread number 28 - Come and join us! The threads may be getting on a bit but the new starters keep us young and fresh!

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason these threads started!

Lurkers and new starters: please just jump in and post - you'll find a lot of support here and we’re a friendly bunch.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

Our previous threads can be found by browsing through the fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

and actually the site is really good [[http://www.52fastdiet.co.uk/]

invinoveritas51 · 16/10/2013 14:23

Will do tip - have got a very quiet day at the office tomorrow so it will help pass the time of day (and stop me picking!)! Will report back!

rubbishfamily333 · 16/10/2013 14:33

Notastired - wow you have done really well Grin so did you find you lost weight quickly? Or was it slow as in 1lbs per week? How long do you think it took for you to go from size 12 to 8?

I want to get down to 9 stone so have about 1 1/2 stone to loose. And I'm happy to be a slim 10. As in I can get into a 8 but 10 is better Grin

MissStrawberry · 16/10/2013 15:04

Thanks eatriskier, I will have a look tomorrow when I get round to doing a shop.

wrigglebum · 16/10/2013 16:06

Had an amazingly delicious FD lunch- smoked trout, pickled gherkins and red cabbage finished off with a square of dark chocolate. Really tasty and satisfying for around 130 calories!

I've come back round to having lunch on FDs, just seems to work better when looking after a little person. I'm a bit less strict now I'm at target- if I have 600 calories it's not the end of the world.

BetsyBell · 16/10/2013 16:21

Hello Cuckoo I'm impressed with your thread dedication - I think I started back on thread 9 or so and even that many took me ages to catch up on!

Sounds like you're doing really well and I'm sure you'll be giving out sage advice for others soon :)

Hi Dotty! Thanks - although got a sneaky feeling it will slow to a crawl again now. Maybe I will hit the dreaded plateau? Hmm I'm almost looking forward to one so I can feel like a fully validated member of the 5:2 crew Smile. You guys have been a vital part of my success so far. I have really taken on board the tips and advice and would say I agree with pretty much everything the 'oldies' have to say. To any newcomers to 5:2 struggling to get off to a positive start I would say...
-Go for it - stop procrastinating and just get started. One day of semi fast is better than one day of no fast attempt at all. So start somewhere. Anywhere!

  • Be honest about what you are eating and drinking. Most drinks and all food contain calories so make sure you include Everything in your 500. Also keep a proper note of what you are consuming throughout day. If it sounds like too much hard work man I mean woman up you will prob find that after a couple of wks you no longer need to anyway, but it does really help to start with - realising just how much each food/drink contains.
  • Don't go nuts on NFD - it's basic maths to know that if you eat 2 days worth in 1 day but then fast the next, you have still had 2 days food in 2 days! Kid yourself all you want but you won't lose weight that way (though will still get other fast benefits)
  • I have found after my first month; it definitely gets easier, though there will always be ups and downs like totm etc, avoid eating until later in day on a FD (
cuckoo13 · 16/10/2013 16:47

Haha Betsybell you spoke too soon! I think I've been a virtual member for too long now that I just erupted in my last post. Feel all spent now! ahh! Think I've been reading them for pretty much the past month - thought I'd only been doing this 2 weeks until I totted it up earlier. Can't believe a month has gone already! I'm tempted to leave them there, but it's a bit like a drama serial so I need to know where you're all up to and who's new etc! Misss has just had food poisoning, everyone's getting back to school and you've just put your heating on lol!

cuckoo13 · 16/10/2013 16:58

Feeling extra hungry today. Don't know if it's the weather/temp? Was going to have golden veg cupaslop for late lunch at 2, was 81 cals, but took one sip and thought bugger that! No flavour. So swiftly chucked it down the sink, then made myself a cup of bouillion, 12 cals thank you very much and loads more flavour. Plus 69 cals in bank for 3 sqs plain choc dinner later. yay!!

BetsyBell · 16/10/2013 17:02

Uh oh, thread stalker alert cuckoo Wink Grin

I wish I'd posted up more juicy stuff for you now!

I may or may not have polished off the remnants of a tub of peanut butter and a tub of nutella. With every spoonful I was visualising that 'What does 200 calories look like' article. That's called mindful eating folks!!

Whatever happened to my emergency mini green and blacks? That would have been a better option!

somewherebecomingrain · 16/10/2013 17:11

Hello all

sweetie I started 5:2 at 6 weeks post partum. My dd is huge and healthy.

I gave myself 750 a day initially as I was bf.

Now I'm weaning her and I'm a stone lighter. I've also plateaued. So while still bf have gone to 500 a day or less, all liquid which I agree works well - purely milky coffee.

Anyway, as for my plateau, I've been on mfp. I resent getting that detailed as one of the attractions of the diet was being able to stop thinking.

Managed to keep my calorie intake to below my tdee on 2 nfds - above what MFP says it is but below if I take bf into account. All a Bit rough and ready cause Mfp doesn't know the cals in my personal cake recipes but more accurate than no Mfp.

This morning's weigh in showed I've lost 4lb from my plateau and kept of off a full day after my fast day.

I think it's about adjusting to

  • how much less you need to eat when you lose weight
  • how much easier it is to eat less when you fast. Indeed that over-eating doesnt make you happy anymore, it just makes you feel odd.

Mind takes a while to catch up - it thinks you need the food and you'd be happier if you ate it.

somewherebecomingrain · 16/10/2013 17:12

Stop thinking about food all the time I mean

somewherebecomingrain · 16/10/2013 17:14

I ate so wierdly yesterday too. Rice cake here, ten grapes there, large slice of cake, three cupcakes, salad, broccoli, sausages!

somewherebecomingrain · 16/10/2013 17:15

Ps hello cuckoo!

somewherebecomingrain · 16/10/2013 17:19

Ooh betsey Smile. Peanut butter and Nutella! I'm trying to leave all that all behind on my nfds!

BetsyBell · 16/10/2013 17:33

somewhere It's what happens when you stop shopping for snacks'n'treats! Emergency situations call for scraping the barrel nearly empty jars.

I wouldn't condone any of that of course but it's not a regular thing so I'm not going to stress about it.

I agree with all the points you've made. It's worth remembering/knowing that these lessons don't stick for life - it's perfectly easy to slide back to old habits gradually and if you do that the weight will go back on. Fast days really help to reset that slide back though. It really is a WOL not a diet fix.

Hi everyone.

Weird eating here today, sooo hungry for carbs. I've eaten a lot, let's just leave it at that.

Fabulous NSV though. I ordered a Hobbs dress in a 16, and it is faaar too big. So I am about to re-order in the 14 Grin I know their sizing comes up big, but even so I am chuffed.

PoshPaula · 16/10/2013 17:45

Am drinking water! Anything to stop the hunger! Am off to Pilates tonight which will keep me away from food.

I've a coat on order which should arrive any day soon and this will be my reward for fasting, exercising and avoiding alcohol.....

cuckoo your drill sergeant advice is helpful.

cuckoo13 · 16/10/2013 17:51

(Homer Simpson voice) Mmmmmm peanut butter!

Have you tried the Ben & Jerrys Peanut Butter Cup?? Wash my mouth out for saying this but it is almost too peanut buttery! .... Peanut butter ice-cream with MAHOOSIVE chunks of chocolate peanut butter cups. I know how I'm spending my weekend Wink

Oops! just dribbled on dog curled up on lap.

Hi Somewhere (ooh look at me name shortening. I've arrived!) I also don't bother with too much in way of details on NFD. I have worked out what I should need at current weight and also what I will need at target weight, thanks to the advice of some of the other ladies, but apart from baring that in mind, I just wing it. I am mindful of roughly what I'm eating in sense that if I have a really bad day will try to balance over course of week. I completely agree that your appetite naturally seems to shrink anyway, and that certain foods or large quantities become a turn off. That is one of the beauties of this woe, it kind of takes care of itself and reconditions mind and body. Providing you stick to the rules on fast days and don't eat your body weight in food on NFD it works like magic. Also inches(cms), not always weight loss, is the what to focus on - she says day before weekly weigh in after nasty dirty gorging eating over weekend!

cuckoo13 · 16/10/2013 17:54

Sorry for time delay! It takes me ages to post by time I've read it back and realised how little of what I thought I've said is actually on screen lol!

cuckoo13 · 16/10/2013 17:54

Except for that. Wink

cuckoo13 · 16/10/2013 17:58

Hi PP glad it's working for you! You are one step ahead of me. I have yet to start up exercising, though desperately need to. Worried I'll be all sag if I don't.

Am also trying not to let lazy arse non drill sergeant me, convince me that if I start exercising weight loss will stop as muscle heavier blah blah - any excuse lol!

cuckoo13 · 16/10/2013 18:09

Well done Alibab Grin those moments make it feel more real than scales. Am refusing to use belt with now too loose jeans just so I can revel in the loosiness a bit longer! Though yanking them up whilst pushing trolley round shop probably making me look weird rather than svelte kylie esque babe am imagining in head Hmm Grin

cuckoo13 · 16/10/2013 18:12

Right! Off to be busy again! Just hope DP doesn't ask why approx none of the online 'jobs' I was 'doing' have been done!
