Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 thread number 28 - Come and join us! The threads may be getting on a bit but the new starters keep us young and fresh!

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason these threads started!

Lurkers and new starters: please just jump in and post - you'll find a lot of support here and we’re a friendly bunch.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

Our previous threads can be found by browsing through the fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

welcome aboard
Please do not think of 5:2 in terms of success or failure.
If you manage a 16 hour fast - ie 7pm after supper one evening through to lunchtime the following day - you will have succeeded in doing your system good.
And weight loss is a side effect, not the reason for doing it.
I've not (net) lost any weight since last December. I do not need to. But I still fast.
Everybody loses weight at the right rate for them. Frankly the fatter you are at the start, the faster it will go. Some people are losing 3 lb a week (from quite a high starting figure)
Give yourself a break - in all senses of the word.
Success comes from the head no the stomach.

BigChocFrenzy · 15/10/2013 22:20

Re FD eating/not/times: I'm aiming for 36-40 hr fasts with just veg juice & cocoa OR a small protein shake, totalling less than 100 cals. Once I start to eat, I feel hungry, so I find total food fast easier. Definitely no fruit or yoghurt.
I also take 0-cal BCAA(branch chain amino acid) drink to maintain my hard-earned gym muscle Grin.
I might do zero-cal shorter 24 hr fasts, say between early supper Thursday to late supper Friday, as a variation.
Has anyone compared the effectiveness of the 24-hr / 36-hr FD ?

rubbishfamily333 · 15/10/2013 22:22

So are you fasting twice a week? Or does it go down to once per week to maintain?

My current weight is 10.9 Ns at only 5'2 it's making me a size 14! I havnt been this weight since I had dd. and even then the weight came off quickly. Right now my weight is going up and up and I need to control it.

Talkinpeace · 15/10/2013 22:25

rubbish
I still fast twice a week. Because then I can be a greedy moo at the weekend Grin

Bigchoc your best bet is to ask BreadandWine - when you can drag him away from granddad duties for an hour Grin - he's pretty hardcore on the long fasts ....

BigChocFrenzy · 15/10/2013 22:27

rubbishfamily I kept giving up low cal diets after 2 days Blush but I love 5:2 . I don't need to be hungry all day every day, just sometimes hungry until the next day. If a chocaholic glutton like me can do it, there is hope for all.

rubbishfamily333 · 15/10/2013 22:30

I am also a chocoholic! Have you found it helps and stops you craving chocolate as much?

rubbishfamily333 · 15/10/2013 22:31

I'm just worried about starting this as I'm actually very greedy and eat when I really don't need to and I'm worried about trying it Confused

Talkinpeace · 15/10/2013 22:32

skip one meal and see how you do.
We call it 16:8 - eating only within an 8 hour window in the day (between noon and 8pm) and NO SNACKING and only tea for breakfast and then NO SNACKING Grin

sweetiepie1979 · 15/10/2013 22:34

Hi I'd like to join I'm currently 12.7 stone and only 5.2 but I have to push a baby out this week so that'll take a stone off hopefully! Then I need to do something I've got to get in control of my eating again I've been horrendous it wasn't pregnancy it was greed! If I breast feed can I do the 5.2?

eatriskier · 15/10/2013 22:34

rubbish I've tried WW and given up really quickly as I found the points system too crappy. I've tried just being sensible and ruined it with splurges. I tried GI and that actually worked really well for me. I tried slim fast and ended up pregnant (though I don't think that was slim fast's fault Wink). 5:2 and me love each other. I'm a cheetah in a world of tortoises here - click my name and look at my pic for an almost 6m difference if you want to see what it can do if you're a freak. I'm not alone though, DH has joined me and is just as freakishly quick! Both of us are really happy, we spend 5 days eating well and only 2 days dieting. We both look forward to the detox of a fast day. I also have a medical condition that nothing other than fasting has seemed to improve (hence why I still want to get 2 fasts a week in somehow despite the fact I lose so well on this).

Also if you only lose 1lb a week. Well in a year you'll be nearly 4 stone lighter.

eatriskier · 15/10/2013 22:37

sweetie There are a few bfers here, but the general consensus last time someone came on was to at least get to 6 weeks bfing before even considering dieting/5:2

Talkinpeace · 15/10/2013 22:39

sweetiepie
wow, you are planning early on the baby weight!!
Yes, there are people breastfeeding and doing 5:2 - they will pop up shortly.
BUT
do not even try until littl'un is at least 12 weeks old - you need to make sure you both get a good start.
If I remember right, a couple of lasses use 750 instead of 500 for fast days but otherwise do just the same as the rest of us loonies

eatriskier · 15/10/2013 22:41

What tip says - our tip is very very knowledgable

rubbishfamily333 · 15/10/2013 22:42

Talkin - do others do that everyday? And in that 8 hour window are you allowed to eat what you like? Including snacks? Or is it restricted?

rubbishfamily333 · 15/10/2013 22:44

Eat - I can't get onto your profile as I'm on my phone, but I will check tomorrow.

So what was your starting weight? And what is your weight now? If you don't mind me asking? Grin

eatriskier · 15/10/2013 22:48

rubbish I was 14st 13 and now I'm 10st 2.

sweetiepie1979 · 15/10/2013 22:48

We'll I'm 7 days overdue so I feel like a beached whale need a plan to take mind off whether or not I'm having contractions! Right I'll take the advice and at least try to establish breast feeding before hitting the diet thanks for the advice

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 15/10/2013 22:48

rubbish I can really understand your fear, I felt just the same.

Give it a go for one day and see how you feel. Plan your food, make sure you've got something you can drink. I drink hot water with a slice of lemon in it and find it really helps keep the hunger at bay.
You have nothing to lose and everything to gain - except the weight of course!

Successful fast day here, I've had a whisker over 500 calories.

I have a good tip for soup eating if anyone else struggles like I do with a lack of variation in texture when you aren't having bread with it. Raw carrot batons to munch alongside - was yummy and very filling :)

rubbishfamily333 · 15/10/2013 22:48

Wow that's amazing! Well done! I'm very EnvyEnvy

Sophiste · 15/10/2013 22:48

Checking in after a loooong fast day - had zero cals until I got home at 10pm. Scarcely has a plate of sushi been consumed with such relish.

Anyway, that's me done for the week (first fast of the week was Sunday). Now off to a conference where those hotel breakfasts will be threatening to ruin me!

Talkinpeace · 15/10/2013 22:49

NO SNACKING
ever again, for ever and ever and ever
snacks are awful things
they make you fat and damage your blood chemistry

eat meals
eat mindfully
eat with awareness

it works
but you have to close the kitchen between meals

but those meals can be wonderful things - mine tonight was spag bol, lashings of cheese and then a slice of apple tart

rubbishfamily333 · 15/10/2013 22:52

Alibaba - is there any cals in lemon in hot water? That's what I was planning on having on fast days as I don't drink tea or coffee.

I was also thinking about having a cuppa soup at what would be lunch time and then dinner and maybe a few raw carrotts if I am starving which I guess I will be. Then bed Grin

rubbishfamily333 · 15/10/2013 22:53

Talking - ahhh sounds scary. So is that no snacking on 16:8 or on that and 5:2?

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 15/10/2013 22:59

No, no cals.

Read through some of the info in the opening post of the thread, and through the thread and have a go if you want to.
What you'll see is that people's behaviour changes gradually over time - as a result of the fasting. The first few fast days I did I had a few snacks - really because I couldn't believe that I could go so long without eating anything. As the weeks have passed I have noticed that my need for snacks is diminishing, and not just on fast days either. I leave much longer gaps between eating than I used to, I'm just not as obsessed with where the next mouthful is coming from.

Talkinpeace · 15/10/2013 22:59

rubbish the others will tell you, I've got rather a large bee in my bonnet about NO SNACKING but once you realise that your arms and legs do not fall off when you take four hour gaps between meals, the weight does start to fall off Smile
