Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 Thread Number 23: Summer's really here - time to melt off those extra pounds!

BetsyBell · 08/07/2013 22:49

The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his new book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing back through the fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Yes I do track on nfds, last week was mostly around 1400 on Mfp so let's say 1500 ish. Have had 2 pretty indulgent days fri and sat with meals out, more like 2000 but less than tdee so should be ok?

postmanpatscat · 21/07/2013 17:09

You should be eating close to TDEE on NFDs thalia

peplum41 · 21/07/2013 17:37

Is anyone going to admit to buying the fail on Sunday?

Anyone?

I will admit I like the magazine. Don't hate me.

peplum41 · 21/07/2013 17:47

tryinhard2 if anyone wants to come on here and whinge about lack of results that's fine by me. Here's my twopence worth.

I'm sick of this plateau and I hate having such a crappy TDEE. Snarl snarl. Hydrau

ERD, I thought you were estimating your TDEE to be 900. I don't why either.

BetsyBell · 21/07/2013 18:21

Quiet thread today! No moans from me but happy to report that wildwater has popped up a post from Patagonia on the Maintainers thread

mehefin · 21/07/2013 18:39

Peplum I don't buy but I read it at night ! ( Residents buy it ) I did say to my colleague last week that I wished I had enough brain power to read the Independent at 2am ! I consider the fail's puzzle page to be my perk at work !

Been eating my garden for 10 days now - loving it, reckon I'm eating 80 - 90% fruit and veg and have still managed two 20 hour water only fasts .

Keep going Peplum. The thing about a plateau is that it is maintaining in disguise. Tip said something about having to eat like slim people to be slim and I am coming to realise that they eat a lot less food than we realised !!

thaliablogs · 21/07/2013 18:39

postmanspatcat I know that's the theory but my tdee is 2300 (actually more but i set exercise level low to try to get it down!) and that's a huge amount of food. I feel overly full, particularly in this weather, on more than 1800 and that's a stretch and requires some high cal food (ie involves ice cream etc). I don't want to get into a binge/fast cycle which is surely not healthy. I have tried to increase my nfd food a bit since I posted earlier in the week, we'll see what this week brings.

HellesBelles396 · 21/07/2013 19:00

It's amazing how much difference a few pounds can make to the tdee. Mine's gone below 2000 (only just but). Still no slimmer but scales are happy. 14s9 on friday morning.

Have added the shred in an effort to slim and trim. Plus,I want to exercise now that I have more energy.

Itsaboatjack · 21/07/2013 20:18

thalia, avocado, nuts and seeds are good healthy ways to top up your calories without feeling bingey or bloated.

peplum I'll hide behind you and hold my hand up too. I'll definitely give some of the recipes a try when I'm back from hols.

EagleRiderDirk · 21/07/2013 21:22

peplum I totally forgot about the daily fail. the 900 was some online calculators for calories burned doing 6hrs of cooking. sorry for confusion!

NurseEzzzaChapel · 21/07/2013 21:25

Just popping in to say hydrau to everyone. Ha ha. Thought that was maybe a welsh word and was bout to look it up until I saw the next post. Grin

EagleRiderDirk · 21/07/2013 21:30

hope everyone has had a great day.

today was oh's birthday and its been cake filled. ended up only half exercising control of a dessert buffet by having small slices but of lemon meringue pie, chocolate gateaux and almond cake, plus jelly and strawberries.

still under Tdee today but I have a sneaking suspicion tomorrow's fast is going to be hard...

Tortoiseonthehalfshell · 22/07/2013 00:34

Totally off the topic of diets, peplum I have put a photo on my profile that I took this weekend, just to prove to you that it gets cold where I live!

Welcome back SAF!!!

Lots of nice victories around here, hurrah. I'm checking in on a FD which I'm not expecting to be eventful - did a batch of harissa chicken and lentil FD soup last night, the DDs dinner is also taken care of (I hate having to come up with weekday dinners for the DDs on FDs!), all fine.

Weirdly, though, I put on my size 12 fat jeans yesterday and they felt really tight. I haven't weighed myself since Thursday morning, and I was back down to what-I-thought-was-60-kg-on-the-old-scales, which is 4kg/9lb under where I started, and those jeans fit okay then. I can't have put on 9lb of water weight in five days, can I? Oddness.

tryinghard2 · 22/07/2013 07:43

what does hydrau mean?

BreakOutTheKaraoke · 22/07/2013 07:49

Have they been in the tumble dryer tortoise? Mine felt a bit tighter yesterday too, I'm going to put it down to being hot and sweaty.

Itsaboatjack · 22/07/2013 08:16

Morning all. I don't thinking ever seen this thread so quiet over the weekend, I guess everyone was out enjoying the weather.

Well I had a sneaky WI this morning and it said 10.8.4. My goal for my hols, which are in 4 days, was 10.7 so I'm very close. I'm still working out a holiday strategy, we decided to go self catering rather than all inclusive though so that should help. We are going to Lanzarote (never been before), so I'm hoping for lots of lovely fresh fish and salads. And I'm taking my trainers too hoping I'll manage a couple of early morning runs on the beach.

VulvaVoom · 22/07/2013 10:59

Hello everyone,

I'm starting today, so can I tell you a story?

I HATE my body, cried in the shower this morning - it's bad. TMI but DH wanted to get intimate last night and I just felt cross and upset at him pretending to find my disgusting, fat body attractive.

I never liked it much but since having DD 9 months ago, I long for that overweight body back! Decided last week to give this a go, so I've started today.

This is going to be the new me (please, please, please)

HellesBelles396 · 22/07/2013 11:06

Hi VulvaVoom I try not to look in the mirror and view what I can see of myself with as much detachment as possible. If it helps (also tmi) I haven't felt able to have sex for 8 years (just worked that out - longer than I had thought) being single helps with that and my poor opinion of how I look helps me to stay single.

You have helped me realise that I don't just need to lose weight to feel physically better but to feel mentally, emotionally and sexually better too. I'm only 5 fasts in so I have a long way to go.

Breadandwine · 22/07/2013 11:08

Hey, VV [hug]

You've come to the right place, we'll soon get you sorted! Smile

Read the OP and follow the links - you need to know why this WOL works - and work it certainly does (disclaimer - barring medical conditions, etc).

But good luck and come back here for support and inspiration.

Smile
monster54 · 22/07/2013 11:08

vulvavoom love the name by the way. This is a change of life. You need to embrace fasting for the long term future for it to work.

I started at the end of Feburary and have lost 20lbs.

Not ground breaking but it comes off slowly but permanently. In that time I've socialised, drunk, ate and been very merry.

Like anyone here I've had my down moments and had to reassess and adjust. But fasting is with me for life now.

I look forward to Mondays I love the empty feeling.

I do 4:3, I currently have a BMI of 24 but I don't exercise. I am currently losing between 0.5/1lb.

FAST DAY!!!!!!

Very hot hot hot but was gagging for some emptiness this morning. Ate way too much at the weekend, I feel disgusting!!!!

VulvaVoom · 22/07/2013 11:14

Thank you all so much, you have genuinely boosted me up. I will do this and HellesBelles what you said has touched me a lot.

DD just woken up, so I have to go. Food shopping later - how fun will that be? Fast day and boiling hot!

Sounds like you've all done so well. I'll be back later.

Tortoiseonthehalfshell · 22/07/2013 11:21

Welcome VVV! I felt so sad for you that you can't accept the idea of anyone finding your body attractive, and I hope that a) this diet works for you but also b) that you can step outside your perceptions a bit. FWIW, my DH told me quite sincerely that he found me sexiest ever when we were TTC DD2, even though I was properly overweight back then at almost 70kg - because I was enthusiastic about wanting to get him in the sack all the time!

poor man, it didn't last past the successful conception

End of a Monday fast day for me. Really easy today despite it being completely and unreasonably freezing and horrible all day. Lovely warming chicken and lentil soup with lots of spice in it, and 100 cals up my sleeve for emergencies.

BreakOut good theory! We bought a dryer last weekend after never having had one before ever, are all my clothes going to feel smaller now?

HellesBelles396 · 22/07/2013 11:22

If you're going shopping, buy the best eggs you can afford (sainsbury's do a really tasty woodland egg). Boiled eggs are seeing me through fd's so they need to taste good!

EagleRiderDirk · 22/07/2013 11:48

yes, stuffing your face with cake the evening before a fast day means mucho hunger Meh.

MaccaPaccaismyNemesis · 22/07/2013 11:54

A mixed day for me, weighed in and have lost 0.7kg, but I should be fasting and due to eating a bit too well yesterday I woke up starving. Fd tomorrow I think!
