Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 Thread Number 23: Summer's really here - time to melt off those extra pounds!

BetsyBell · 08/07/2013 22:49

The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his new book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing back through the fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

ERD goes to show we're all different - I had chocolate cake with ice cream and soya cream after a huge chilli non carne, and I'm yet to feel hungry.

I've always said I'm one of the lucky ones when it comes to feeling hunger - I just never do on FDs. Different story rest of the week! Grin

HairyPotter · 22/07/2013 12:35

4th FD here (I think Blush) Planning on soup and Thai red curry with a teeny amount of rice.

I completely agree that as soon as I start eating on a NFD, I feel hungry far quicker. It's almost easier on a FD. I'm still struggling to count cals with mfp on NFD's. I'm trying to find the closest thing to what I'm eating but could still be massively out.

Bssh what a result! You must be over the moon. I hope I can do as well as you. It must be an amazing feeling to fit into a size 10!

Vulva hello, I'm a newbie as well. Lost 3lb so far but hoping to lose another 1 at least after my next weigh in on Friday. I find having my meals ready in advance help. I know what I'm eating and it keeps me focused.

Good luck to all today's fasters!

EagleRiderDirk · 22/07/2013 12:37

b&w you are lucky. I am usually not that bad but today I'm struggling. the hottest day of the year, and since 2006 yet I'm here drinking Bovril Shock

I will not give in though. not to the hunger nor to the leftover cake in the kitchen.

Dotty342kids · 22/07/2013 13:15

BssshBosssh I am just back after weekend away and catching up with this thread and that is brilliant to read, well done! Gosh, you must look like a completely different woman! Grin

I had a lovely NSV moment at the weekend. As I work from home I generally spend my lunch hour in the garden doing a spot of sunbathing and my tankini was getting increasingly baggy and shapeless, plus I was hating having brown legs, chest and arms and a white body so decided to buy a cheap n cheerful bikini, just for wearing in garden.
Bought one on way down to where we were for weekend and then yesterday was v. hot and sunny so we took kids to a nearby park / river. Had bikini on under clothes for purposes of paddling but before I knew what I was doing I stripped off my clothes and was in the river, in full public view, in a bikini and it felt GOOD!!!
Oh, and DH said I looked great too, which always helps Grin

So, Vulva and anyone else who has body image issues (and I definitely did), losing just 1stone on this WOE has made a massive difference to me, and it will for you too!

Breadandwine · 22/07/2013 13:16

I will not give in though. not to the hunger nor to the leftover cake in the kitchen.

No leftover cake here, ERD, but I have a bit of test coming up later on, when I make some Chelsea buns for my MIL, who is staying ATM. She loves my Chelsea buns!

But I'll wait until tomorrow to sample one, I'm sure!

Talkinpeace · 22/07/2013 15:05

vvv welcome to the madhouse that is the big threads
but its a very happy very supportive madhouse
and FWIW, if you don't like looking at your reflection, just don't.
concentrate on getting toned and fasting a bit of the weight off and suddenly you'll walk past a shop window and see a reflection that will give you a pleasant surprise.

a little thing I popped onto a different thread .....
work out what your TDEE will be when you hit your ideal weight ....
and just hold that number in the back of your head as to how little you'll actually need to eat to stay looking fab ....

another thing
fasting meals for hot days spanish omelette : onions, leftover veg, a dash of salami then stir in the two eggs and cook till solid and serve with a side salad - nom nom and around 350 calories

VulvaVoom · 22/07/2013 15:09

You ladies/possibly gents too are fantastic, thanks for all your bits of inspiration/hand holding and advice.

Thought I'd pop back to say (possibly rather naively because it's my first ever FD) that it's going well, I would say I'm not too hungry but I could eat something - BUT I WONT. Had a few strawberries for brekkie and Rosemary Conley soup for lunch with 2 small crackers, now enjoying a Coke Zero - normally don't bother with stuff like that but feels like a treat! Think I'll have stir fry for dinner - minus the rice.

Can I pester you to answer me a few silly questions??

  1. Most importantly - alcohol on NFD's - yey or ney? (please say yey)
  2. Is it wise to stick to 2000 calories on NFD's in general (or less??)
  3. I haven't weighed myself at the start, is there anyone who is also going to judge on clothes fitting better/falling off (hopefully) rather than actual size? I find scales a bit depressing Grin

You are all diamonds, this is my new favourite MN place.

smellylittleorange · 22/07/2013 15:30

HI All,

Just to let you know 2.5lb off I've had curry ( well chicken tikka biryani) wine, pizza and Magnum ice cream! I have been mindful and sticking to my TDEE it does go to show that the above choices were not my automatic choice but just life - friends round lets get a Pizza , Boss buys me a Magnum ( am I supposed to let it melt). One of the main reasons for me trying this WOE was because I hate being a killjoy and missing out socially generally.

On Tues i woke up - literally my first though ( as always) was worrying about sticking to my diet and about what I was going to eat. Then I remembered i was on A FEAST day - just having the extra cals and room to eat my cals and not feel hungry was enlightening!!

EagleRiderDirk · 22/07/2013 15:40

Hello vulva and welcome

Ask away!!!

  1. definitely as long its within your allowance, though our tip says no mid week drinking
  2. calculated your tdee on the link in the op and eat to that on NFD. This may be more or less than 2000
  3. There's a few on here who don't weigh, or at least weigh very rarely. A measuring tape is probably better than scales, and judge by things like that and clothes size if you don't want to weigh

good luck x

BetsyBell · 22/07/2013 16:10

Hello vulvavoom, welcome to the threads - you've come to the right place. Yours and HellesBelles posts are heart-breaking but if you can embrace this (and you seem to be) then this way of life could be life-changing for you.

You sound like you're doing brilliantly today :)

I'm in the no-drinking on fast day camp - mainly because alcohol=wanting to snack. You might find that having 2 days completely booze-free changes your outlook a bit anyway. I try and make my fast days as nutrient dense as possible (ie loads of veggies/salad plus lean protein) and absolutely no crap (sugar, alcohol, highly processed stuff). I always feel great and energised after a fast day (after the difficult first couple of weeks anyway!)

OP posts:
HellesBelles396 · 22/07/2013 16:17

I rarely drink whether fd or nfd. I don't like how it feels either at the time or afterwards. When I do have alcohol it's because I fancy the flavour of that particular drink and I have only a little.

monster54 · 22/07/2013 16:19

I thought it would be interesting to see what peoples goals are? Short term/long term?

Weight? Dress size? BMI??

My short term goal is to hit 10st 7lbs....

I have 6lbs to go and I started at 12st 5lbs.

My long term goal I would like to get to 10st!!!

NotAsTired · 22/07/2013 16:21

VV. You will need to work out what your TDEE (how much calorie you need on a day to day basis) is and in order to work that out you will need to weigh yourself first as it is dependent upon your weight amongst other things. Basically, an average woman might need 2000 but very few of are average. For example my TDEE is about 1480 calories only - if I eat any more than that I will (and have) put on weight.

So weigh yourself at the beginning and then hide it away and you can use other indicators of weight loss.

Anyway, fd today. Can't believe it's already after four. Don't know where the day went. maybe it was the nap I had

NotAsTired · 22/07/2013 16:26

Short term goal: 8 stones (in time for my holiday)
Long term goal: BMI of under 23 and be fit like tip Grin

EagleRiderDirk · 22/07/2013 16:27

For the first time in 2.5m I have given in and eaten before the evening meal. Am struggling today. I'm beginning to suspect its not in fact yesterday's cakes but aunt flo... So I ate my dessert yoghurt about an hr ago. Has quelled some hunger but I'm worrying its going to make it all harder in the long run.

monster Short term my goal is 10 stone 7, this has me just in healthy BMI but when I weighed that before I look at the photos and think I looked just awful. However I embarked on the diet that led to that around the time I was splitting with xh, and then obviously did split with him and lived on a diet of mainly wine. It may be the stress and unhealthy eating habits that made me look bad. When I get to 10 stone 7 I will re-evaluate, as 9 stone 7 would be better for getting me well into the healthy range. I started at 14 stone 11, and am currently 11 stone 9 so still a way to go.

BetsyBell · 22/07/2013 16:29

The other thing is that this WOE is about changing our routines and habits for the better so the ultimate aim should be that we WANT to make healthier choices for ourselves because we feel so much better when we do.

And yet we can still have our cake and eat it too, just less often but enjoy it so much more Smile

monster
Weight: 9stone11
Dress size: top/dress/skirt 6-10, trousers: 10-12
BMI: 22.9
Goal: vaguely to get to 9stone7, BMI 22 - but having seen some recent photos of myself I don't need to do this. So I'll be mostly maintaining from now on with occasional periods of small loss.

In just under 2 years I've lost over 50lbs, 6 months of that has been 5:2, 19lbs lost

OP posts:
EagleRiderDirk · 22/07/2013 16:29

oh yeah, and long term goal: flatten my tummy enough so I don't have to wear granny pants (the only ones comfy since I had 2 c secs as they don't gravitate towards the pouch)

Southeastdweller · 22/07/2013 16:32

Hi VV. I can empathise with much of what you said earlier. I think the mind and the body are massively connected.

I?d resigned myself to being a chubby carb-oholic with poor body issues yet I?ve turned all this around thanks to this WOL. Stick to it and I guarantee dramatic results.

thalia The suggestions from itsaboat are great and something else to consider is being more liberal with cooking oils and oils in salad dressings.

EagleRiderDirk · 22/07/2013 16:33

oh ffs, I started at 14 stone 13 and currently am 11 stone 10

Why do I keep thinking there are 12 lb to a stone (wishful thinking I reckon)

NotAsTired · 22/07/2013 16:36

Same here EDR re:pouch. Does it ever go away though?

Dotty342kids · 22/07/2013 16:37

Start weight: 11st 8lbs
Height: 5 "4
Current weight: 10st 7lbs (though this can be up three pounds from there depending where in the week I am!)
Goal: A steady size 12 / safely in the health BMI range (so about another 2-3lbs to go)

BetsyBell · 22/07/2013 16:40

My tummy's pretty flat now - it's not pretty on its own as it's stretched and baggy looking (big babies) but perfectly fine in clothes! I'm too old to want to be prancing around half nekkid so having a nice 'silhouette' is all that's required (that and bikini shorts to hold in the worst of it!)

OP posts:
Itsaboatjack · 22/07/2013 16:41

My real long term goal is to stop yo-yo dieting. If I can get to a weight and stay within about 5-7 lbs of it for a year I will be really happy.

My first goal is to get to 10st which is a bmi of 22 for me and about a size 10. I will reasses when I get there, and may go down to 9st7 but I don't want to make it too difficult a weight for me to maintain.

mttum · 22/07/2013 16:43

betsy, such a good point about the cake. Cake, wine, ice cream etc seem so much more like treats now I'm not having them every day. I also tend to go for better quality instead of any old rubbish.

monster, my priority is to get my waist down to half of my height, which I am told is the healthy limit. It needs to be 36", at the moment hovering between 39 and 40. But I started at 46" so going in the right direction overall Smile.

Something I wish I'd done was to have a picture taken when I was 16st 10lb, as I'd really like to compare that with my current 13st 9. But I'm not going back there, ever!!

smellylittleorange · 22/07/2013 16:45

Monster

Weight 14 st 4.5 lb ? Dress size 16/18 ? BMI 31??

My short term goal 13st 12lb by August Bank Holiday - Family Doo - Naming Ceremony (New Dress?)

My long term goal 10st 4.5 lb hopefully by End of Feb but at least look like that then!!

I'm 5ft 7 btw always helps to put in perspective.
