Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his new book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing back through the fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Some of the recipes seem to require about a million ingredients but there are some lovely things in there. I can't keep eating soup and ryvita or I'll be bored as buggery soon!

BsshBossh · 20/07/2013 21:41

Thank you all Thanks

mttum · 20/07/2013 21:41

bssh, how amazing is that??!! Big respect!

MelanieCheeks · 20/07/2013 21:42

Macca there's endless simple variations of fish-and-veg....

EagleRiderDirk · 20/07/2013 21:52

maccapacca try varying as otherwise you'll end up like me twitching at stirfries!!!

Itsaboatjack · 20/07/2013 21:52

Just saw an add on tv, Mimi Spencer has a magazine of fast recipes free in the Daily Mail tomorrow.

Now if I can just bring myself to buy the Daily Mail.

Talkinpeace · 20/07/2013 21:58

had access to a free copy of the Daily Fail this morning : big bit about how the Hairy Bikers lost weight.
Had not realised that Si is younger than me!

Do not buy the paper (saves giving money to the tax avoiding Rothermere clan) : use the website

mttum · 20/07/2013 22:08

Itsa, don't do it, daily mail like most papers = poison. Plenty of other recipes on the web etc x

EagleRiderDirk · 20/07/2013 22:12

have a family gathering for the in laws tomorrow. maybe one of them buy the daily mail and I can steal it...

mttum · 20/07/2013 22:12

How about this for a NSV? First time in about 30 years I have fitted into a "slimline cut" shirt! Admittedly a M&S size 16.5 collar, but still... Grin

mttum · 20/07/2013 22:14

erd, as long as you don't pay money for it!

Talkinpeace · 20/07/2013 22:16

mttum
nice one.
DH likes loose shirts but as he gets slimmer, the better fit is definitely a good look.

EagleRiderDirk · 20/07/2013 22:18

mttum I will never heard pay for it ever. by which I mean the daily mail. I'd rather pay a male prostitute Wink

EagleRiderDirk · 20/07/2013 22:18

and nice nsv

BsshBossh · 20/07/2013 22:44

mttum fantastic NSV!

postmanpatscat · 20/07/2013 23:03

ceebee I'm 5ft 4 and its above the knee but not too far up - I might be an 8 but I'm a 45yo size 8!

ceebeegeebies · 21/07/2013 07:08

PPC it will be too short for me then as I am 5ft 8 although it would be ok with leggings/jeggings I guess.

ELR · 21/07/2013 07:45

Morning everyone, not posted for ages but have been lurking a little!
Well done bshh that's amazing and saf welcome back and fab weight! postman a size 8 ex faster is acceptable, well done! But come back soon!
aka keep it up .5lb loss is better than nothing or a gain!
Well after my 9.12 weigh in last Friday I had a reasonably good week eating with tdee and did two 700 cal fast days(leaving drinks)only to get weighed this Friday and be up by nearly 4lbs to 10.1.75. So cheesed off! Well I know the 9.12 wasn't going to stay but thought I may at least be still under 10! Anyway total rebellion and eaten loads Friday and Saturday so now feeling even more annoyed!
But sulking is over now and back to good eating, so nice healthy tdee food today and fasting tomorrow and Thursday as usual.
Good luck and well done to everyone else. Happy Sunday everyone!

thaliablogs · 21/07/2013 09:02

I hate to always be whining on here but really fed up! Weigh in this morning and I am one pound up on last week, back to 12st 6. Which means that given my original 12st 9 had at least 2 pounds of period weight in it, I have lost a grand total of 1 pound after 3 weeks of fasting, and killing myself at the gym 5 times a week. It's not worth the headaches and the bad moods surely?

We are going on hols in 10 days time so I guess I will keep doing it til then, but wondering if this woe is just not going to work for me, particulAlry when I have seen all these lovely posts about fantastic losses and NSVs - well done to all seeing such great effects!

Itsaboatjack · 21/07/2013 09:30

Oh dear thalia, I'd be pissed off too. I don't know if you've mentioned before, do you track on NFDs?

5 days at the gym is a lot, what kind of workouts are you doing? Someone linked further up the thread to an article by Nia Shanks, the article was about fasting, I think it was called 'the dark side of fasting', but I also clicked on some of the links in the article and there was some interesting stuff about exercising for weight loss. I won't try and para phrase as I don't want to get it wrong as I've only just started reading it but its about training with weights. May be worth a read.

postmanpatscat · 21/07/2013 09:42

thalia that's so frustrating. How do you eat your fast day cals? Fasting until the evening seems to work for many. When I got a bit stuck no food for 36 hours always worked if you can manage that.

BsshBossh · 21/07/2013 09:46

thalia I know it sounds strange, but reduce your exercise sessions a bit. Weirdly I lose more when I do less exercise and just focus on food intake. It's not that I eat more when exercising but I certainly have more water retention. I do quite intense workouts with HIIT running and heavy weights but I definitely lose more weight when I take an exercise break.

BsshBossh · 21/07/2013 09:47

I would highly recommend browsing the archives of fitness blogger Nia Shanks too thalia.

HellesBelles396 · 21/07/2013 10:03

Just throwing in my 2 cents, Thalia. When I was slim (seems forever ago) and started working out daily, I put on weight (about a stone) though I lost width everywhere and became more defined, flexible and energetic.

If you are working out frequently and particularly if you do any weights or syrength exercises, stop using the scales and concentrate on your tape-measurements or fat levels (if you have access to one of those fancy machines).

thaliablogs · 21/07/2013 16:11

Thanks guys, I will check out that blog. I do a mix of resistance and cardio, today was cardio, mostly interval training, tomorrow is a fast day and will be resistance based.

I haven't done measurements as have no tape measure, I guess I could use the one from the toolbox!

When I have shaped up previously I have done a mix of calorie counting (usually keeping to around 1500 calls, tdee is around 2300, bmr around 1800) and exercise - I really like being fit but sometimes the combo of full time job and 2 small kids means I just don't have time to fit in meaningful exercise, so my fitness varies a lot. I have also been I injured this year and so can't run which I find frustrating.

Off to check out that blog, thanks again.
