The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his new book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing back through the fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Well done Shell and Aphra.

Still can't weigh myself as Boots' scales not fixed BUT nsv: Vera Wang diffusion range dress I've had my eye on in a charity shop (size 4 but not sure what that means - prob xl) now fits so I bought it.

MissUnicorn · 20/07/2013 12:42

I'm so chuffed with myself. Even with copious amounts of alcohol, I resisted all the food being shared round in the hotel room at 2am this morning. Apparently I kept saying no, it's not time 8 hours
LOL

MaccaPaccaismyNemesis · 20/07/2013 15:44

3rd fast day is going really well, so starting to think I may do 4:3. I really need to lose weight before this op. I have pre-op on Monday and am bracing myself to hear them say 'you're obese Macca, the anaesthetic may kill you' Hmm

postmanpatscat · 20/07/2013 16:12

I am going to have to admit to being an ex-faster if this carries on...last one was now three weeks ago! Haven't gained though, and plan to get back in the swing of things next week with 3 weeks til bikini deadline. I just bought this and this in size 8 Shock so am feeling skinny but the tummy definitely needs toning. I am having this weekend off careful eating and having an end of term blowout before getting back on the wagon on Monday.

Welcome to all new fasters, welcome back getting-skinnier-by-the-day SAF and well done all you losers Grin who keep proving that 5:2 works and it doesn't hurt!

Lizzabadger · 20/07/2013 17:18

6lb down since I started (27th June). Woo hoo!! Also gone from size 14-16 to 12-14.

Lizzabadger · 20/07/2013 17:33

Very cute clothes PPC

HellesBelles396 · 20/07/2013 18:37

Having a good impromptu fd.

Nearly swooned at the deliciousness of a chocolate praline after my enormous tuna salad.

Loving reading all the progress everyone is making - it is inspirational and gives me hope that I can do the same :)

peplum41 · 20/07/2013 18:43

Hi

Just ploughing my way through a couple of days worth of threads, wanted to add thought.

tryinghard I've lost count of the number of posters who've graced our presence with down in the dumps this doesn't work I've not lost in weeks etc, only to re-emerge days or weeks later full of 5:2 glee as they've started losing again. I've not had a big loss since late April, but I'm confident to say I've lost 3lbs might not sound much, but its better than any diet I've tried. Please stick with it, BTW I've got PCOS, which apparently makes losing weight harder.

EagleRiderDirk · 20/07/2013 18:49

MissUnicorn Grin

So I learnt a harsh lesson today. Always double check the label and don't trust Tesco will bring you what you ordered. 1.5 bottles into my treat diet mountain dew I catch the dark label out of the corner of my eye. Yep, full sugar mountain dew ffs. More than 460 unplanned extra calories. As I spent 6hr slaving over a hot stove today batch cooking I had also allowed myself the calories of a lightly active person (an extra 250 calories seemed more reasonable than the 900+ I was getting from other calculators). This fiddle plus a long hike means I'm still in TDEE. Just. My calories burned from hiking didn't even cover the amount consumed in mountain dew. So Angry

Sod it anyway, a blow out every now and then is deserved especially when you've been working hard so tonight I shall have my Wine, TDEE accounted for and maybe more anyway!

ceebeegeebies · 20/07/2013 18:54

PPC love those slothes - particularly the heart print dress. How long it is (and what height are you)?

Am off work next week and will be at home with DS1...have accepted that I am not going to be able to fast (I just cannot do it whilst at home) so my plan is to eat mindfully with a couple of treats (popcorn at the cinema, lunch out) but I am going to walk DS2 to and from nursery every day and, touch wood, DH seems to be working from home all next week which means I can sneak to the gym in the mornings so hopefully I can get in 4 high cardio classes and 2 body pump classes in the next 7 days. That, hopefully, will at least maintain me until I can fast again the following week Grin

I took on board everyone's comments about not having a drinking session on an empty stomach so I, true to form, decided to stuff my face all day Hmm Anyway, had a lovely night out at a local pub and discovered a definite fondness for Pimms which I had not tried before!

peplum41 · 20/07/2013 20:08

Hi ceebeegeebies glad you're right, esp after the pimms. Keeping active should keep you on target.

Lizzab a size 4 dress is a size 4 dress! I'm currentlyo thrilled that everything says 16 and not 18. Good find.

eagle thanks for the link, really interesting. BTW, what is your TDEE?? It sounds a tad mean.

peplum41 · 20/07/2013 20:10

Almost forgot, headintheclouds Phew, and hydrau! Heres to future nsvs.

peplum41 · 20/07/2013 20:12

That's supposed to be hurrah, what the devil is hydrau?!

EagleRiderDirk · 20/07/2013 20:16

peplum my tdee is 1830, so not mean at all. But I had a decent brekkie, lunch and dinner planned along with 2 glasses of Wine which was going to take me over marginally. And then I thought 6hrs straight cooking has got to give me some calories back right? It was only after lunch I realised the non diet mistake, and I am not forgoing dinner today!

EagleRiderDirk · 20/07/2013 20:17

I love a good hydrau Wink

MelanieCheeks · 20/07/2013 20:19

Vera Wang - good find Lizza!

BsshBossh · 20/07/2013 20:40

postmanpat hurrah for the size 8s. I'm on holiday but thought I'd pop in to announce that I am now officially size 10! I went clothes shopping in the place we're staying today (in UK) and everything I tried on was size 10. I used to be size 20 (early last year) so this is momentous for me.

EagleRiderDirk · 20/07/2013 20:44

Argh! Just finished my dinner and realised at the last slice I could taste olive oil. OH put a load of olive oil on my pizza. Well that's me screwed today. Though does explain the floppiness of my pizza.

Itsaboatjack · 20/07/2013 20:45

That's awesome BsshhBosshh, you must feel incredible. Most of my size 12 are starting to get loser now now so hopefully not too long until I'm there too.

Talkinpeace · 20/07/2013 20:46

YAY for BsshBossh you have HALVED your clothes size

gwan - before and after pics : even if you scribble your face out .....

EagleRiderDirk · 20/07/2013 20:47

Well done bssh. That is just phenomenal

HellesBelles396 · 20/07/2013 20:49

BsshBossh that is fantastic! You must have really embraced this woe. That's the sort of news that keeps newbies like me going

tryinghard2 · 20/07/2013 20:50

MaccaPaccaismyNemesis · 20/07/2013 20:57

Finished the fast day with a Hairy Bikers caeser salad- was bloody lovely and less than 300 calories!

Itsaboatjack · 20/07/2013 21:04

I forgot about my Hairy Dieters cookbook, I will have to dig it out as I'm starting to just eat the same things on fDs
