nobiggy well done! this bout of pneumonia has been the 4th since last october Sad quite worrying he gets it so easily and each time it's getting harder for him to recover. he has primary progressive MS too which is hard.

MABS · 21/08/2010 14:51

very hard for you Fibytheicysea :(

Car lost control on braking, smashed right into front of us, our car shunted into row of parked cars. 3 cars written off :( i was very very lucky!

FiByTheIcySea · 22/08/2010 01:17

oh my MABS very lucky. sounds really scary Shock
unfortunately my dad relapsed this evening.. suddenly went downhill and has just gone off in ambulance to be admitted to hospital. This lot of pneumonia is a nasty bugger to shift.

MABS · 22/08/2010 08:45

so sorry fibytheicysea

Shaz10 · 22/08/2010 12:16

Well, I did my very first one! It wasn't too bad and my back seems to be holding up ok.
During the first run a load of traffic went past when he told me to walk, and I missed what he said and kept running! I was really struggling and wondering how long 60 seconds really was, and in the end began to walk. I then heard him say 'run now!!!" Fortunately I recovered quickly and listened harder next time. Blush

FiByTheIcySea · 22/08/2010 13:13

well done shaz10 the hardest bit is getting started.. i did something similar on my first run too so you're not alone with that one! Grin

sybilfaulty · 22/08/2010 22:25

Hello everyone

Fi, so sorry to hear about your dad. Hope he is now getting the right treatment and will feel better soon. MABS, I am so sorry to hear about the accident. Just what you don't need, I'm sure, what with your son's surgery coming up. Take it easy and best wishes for a speedy recovery.

Welcome Shaz, good to have you on board.

I have been on holiday in rainy Devon for the last week and have managed to stick with Robert whilst I was away. I did my 3 Week 4 runs, albeit very slowly. I tried to do week 5 run 1 this am but it didn't load correctly on my ipod so I ended up doing week 4 again. I am going to have another go in a minute to see if I can do week 5 this week. I am a bit daunted by the 20 min run. I have found 5 to be plenty. However, 4 weeks ago I found 1 to be virtually undoable, so it does work.

Will report back once I have had a go. Might even enjoy it this time. Here's hoping.

TheNextMrsDepp · 22/08/2010 23:55

Hello, hello, hello. Just got back from hols in sunny France, and very pleased to see you've all been keeping up the good work, despite the grimbo UK weather (yes, France was very sunny, thank you, isn't my tan lovely?).

Sorry to hear RL is giving you grief MABS and Fi; hope things pick up for you.

Well, I haven't been a complete potato; I managed a total of three runs while I was away. The first one wasn't a great success because dh and I got carried away and set off on a circuit which turned out to be seriously hilly and about 8k long. It turned into a lovely walk, though......

Then we found a lovely lake with a flat 1k circuit around it, and had a couple of great runs; firstly with my sister and BIL (who are in training for a 10k), then later in the week the whole flipping family wanted to get in on the act, so there were loads of adults and kids all loping round this lake, with varying degrees of success. I managed about 20 minutes each time, but to be honest my commitment was taking a bit of a holiday too, and I was lugging far too much wine and BBQ food. As usual, DS (10) and DD1 (9) showed me up something rotten; while I was puffing along, DS was doing football warm-ups alongside me, running backwards and leaping over rocks while barely breaking sweat. I sat and ate an ice lolly while he completed 7 circuits. Grrr.

The good news is my knee is completely better, which means I'm back on the programme from tomorrow. I need to get back to 25 minutes as a minimum if I'm going to lose that new camembert tyre I seem to have acquired. No excuses now - MrsDepp's holiday is O-V-E-R!

Shaz10 · 24/08/2010 12:35

Woo hoo! Did the second one today. It felt harder than the first, but 60 seconds seems quite short now! Looking forward to number 3 already. :)

I hope I feel the same way about it when I go back to work Wink.

sybilfaulty · 24/08/2010 15:07

Well done Shaz! I must say that the first week of 60s runs virtually did for me, as I didn't realise that 60s could last so long! Awful. BUt it has got progressively easier and now I am on Week 5. I did the 5 mins runs today and on Thurs am leaping to 8 mins! Very exciting. Annoying tho Robert is, I do find his podcasts helpful. Have you tried them?

Anyone else about?

Shaz10 · 24/08/2010 15:33

I use his podcasts, yes! I don't find him too annoying but he doesn't say much yet. Does he talk more in the later weeks?

Shaz10 · 24/08/2010 19:08

I see further up the thread people talking about sports bras. I'm a 36G and wear 2 at the same time - that seems to hold me down nicely. :)

Loujalou · 24/08/2010 19:54

I wear my marks and sparks bras - one at a time and they seem to do the trick with my 32GGs!

Can someone please tell me that week 4 is not as scary as it looks. Please, I have really struggled with week 3 and week 4 looks like hell. But then I thought 3 mins was going to be tough and I did it.

FiByTheIcySea · 25/08/2010 12:51

waves to nextmrsdepp sounds like a fab holiday and the picture you conjure of your son doing his exercises alongside you on your run made me Grin

shaz great going! stick with it you're doing great!
sybilfaulty i was quite daunted by wk5 run 3 and set off thinking i'd repeat the 8min one. when it came time to stop and walk after the 8mins i thought actually i think i'll carry on.. so keep an open mind and you may surprise yourself!
loujaloo for me i found wk3 to wk4 was hard but definitely not hell.. but good news is that wk4 to wk5 was not nearly as hard even with the running time for that wk. you'll be past it before you know it and you may find it easier than you think!

nobiggy · 26/08/2010 00:24

I have utterly failed to run since Saturday. Meant to go Monday early, but had a sllepless night so didn't, this morning DP wasn't awake to look after the kids. Did aquafit this evening.

May get a chance on Friday. I'm still clinging to w5r1.

sybilfaulty · 26/08/2010 08:07

Nobiggy, we are in the same place! I did W5 R1 on Tuesday and was supposed to try R2 today but have got a rotten cough and been up since 5. It's also raining and looks cold (tho I suspect it's not) and I just could not face it. Rubbish.

I think DH is going to run tomorrow am, and Sat am is my swimming time, but I'll try to get R2 in on Sat at some point, with run 3 on Monday. I am actually putting off R3 as I am scared of trying to do 20 mins non stop. Think I might collapse.

Keep on running, ladies.

Loujalou · 26/08/2010 09:25

Thanks Fi am still scared but might try today. There is about double the running compared to week 3.... Oh well onwards and upwards.

How is everyone else doing?

Shaz10 · 26/08/2010 12:45

Finished my first week! It seems to be harder each time, although I recover more quickly. Will be starting Week 2 on Sat or Sun. Yay!!!

Loujalou · 26/08/2010 18:55

Well done Shaz you just need to keep going. Well that's what I keep telling myself.

Did week 4 day 1. Not sure how I am ever going to get to 5k but keeping plodding. Did have moments of hell but second 3 min run wasn't too bad.

Raffiiscool · 27/08/2010 21:59

I finished the programme a few weeks ago and as a total non runner before I am almost evangelical about couch to 5k now - it really works!

I did my first Parkrun last week and I did not embarrass myself - of the 99 woman I came 51st and did it in 30mins 15 sec.

I was really proud of myself. DH is really proud of me too. 10 weeks I ago I was taking no formal exercise apart from running around after 2 kids and I managed to hold my own in a 5k in only 10 weeks!

So get those trainers on tomorrow ladies...!

nobiggy · 28/08/2010 10:53

Raffiiscool Fantastic! You're the living proof that it works!

Sybil, finally got out again this morning, after a whole week off Blush

Did the 2 x 8 minutes, at a very tentative pace, but it was comfortable. Feel better for having done it.

Shaz10 · 28/08/2010 12:54

That's fantastic Raffiiscool. That's where I want to head.

I started week 2 this morning, it was hard but very doable, and I feel fine now. I am very aware that I don't run that fast - practically walking pace!! :o

Raffiiscool · 28/08/2010 14:58

sybilfaulty I was terrified of the 20 mins too - no way I could do it I thought.

You will do it and you will feel fantastically proud of yourself after it.

That is what I love about couch to 5k - you get a real sense of achievement at every stage.

Raffiiscool · 28/08/2010 15:09

Btw personally I found Robert's music a bit annoying after week 6 when you have no interruptions. I switched to Carli's podcasts I did feel a bit disloyal to Robert, as I felt that he had been helping me along! Did go back to Robert once in week 9, but preferred Carli's chart music. What ever works...

Shaz10 · 30/08/2010 10:02

Ooh I'm well into this - week 2 run 2 done! I hope I can keep this up when it's raining... :)
