Our thread has got too big.

Iwill start this one with two things:

Positive vibes for the exciting developments on the MN Marathon Relay thread and

Early ballot for GNR 2010 - you know you want to:)

Got on the Bianchi for the first time in two years today and oooh, my bottom hurts! I did a 20 mile ride followed by a 4.5 mile tempo run and I am shattered now. I could barely cycle to collect my son from school my legs felt so heavy. Really hoping things improve by next weekend or else my time will be slower than the last time I raced the duathlon (when I was pregnant!)

I definitely prefer running to cycling. It tool me almost an hour to get out of the house after fiddling with the seat position and locating my shoes Smile!

Hope everyone is well and getting into the school run groove.

peachsmuggler · 03/09/2010 21:49

Good work wheely, moshi and highfibre, sounds like there is a lot of good training going on.

How's things popsy, hope you are feeling good.

Ran 3 miles today to supermarket to get DD a fleece for holidays. Was supposed to run home but got a coffee and croissant and jumped on the bus Blush

off to Cornwall for a week tomorrow. No running as not enough room in my rucksack for my stuff and no washing machine to wash the stinkiness away! Also will be concentrating my efforts on cream tea consumption.

Happy running y'all!

HighFibreDiet · 05/09/2010 00:12

Well done everyone with your training and good luck for all the races coming up.

I went for an easy 30 min jog on Friday (didn't measure the distance). Have to plan my next target otherwise I will end up being soft on myself.

Moshi, have only just realised you're doing the London Duathlon. Dp is sailing that weekend and I was thinking of taking the boys to watch, where would be a good place for us to stand? If you want to tell us your number and estimated time we could always shout 'come on Moshi' as you speed past!

popsycal · 05/09/2010 12:05

Hi everyone... I used to hang round here a bit before. Just saw Popsy's post and had to post too cos I'm feeling very happy too just having done 10 miles this morning :). I was on 1h47 (maybe would have caught up with you if some silly woman hadn't stopped me to ask directions at 9 1/2 miles while I was struggling up a hill... timing! I wouldn't have stopped anyone so red and sweaty as me Angry

popsycal · 05/09/2010 14:22

tapering yes.....but i havent reallytrained enough tAPER...I fear tapering would be an increase in training:)

OP posts:
stickylittlefingers · 05/09/2010 14:37

:) that's a problem isn't it! I just did 7 miles last week, and when that went OK (i.e. very slow, but no screaming involved!), promised myself that I would try the 10 this week and that would decide whether I could take part or pull out, hence happiness that I'm taking part!

My plan is to stick to the 5ks during the week that I normally do, and a 10k next weekend.

I had thought I was going to improve on last year's time (I'd given myself a pretty low hurdle!), but now I'll just be pleased to finish in one piece.

Are you running for a charity?

popsycal · 05/09/2010 15:21

your story is IDENTICAL tomine

OP posts:

I'm running for cystic fibrosis, which did sort of focus my mind. Though I'm doing it a lot for myself too!!

popsycal · 05/09/2010 16:37

Which 'pen' are you starting in?

OP posts:
stickylittlefingers · 05/09/2010 16:49

erm, I don't have my race pack yet (that's what would tell me isn't it, or am I being dim?) - tho it would be the 2.5 hr one, whatever that is.

Do you have your race pack?

popsycal · 05/09/2010 18:01

OP posts:
stickylittlefingers · 05/09/2010 18:21

eek, OK...

DrNortherner · 06/09/2010 20:26

I have dabbled with running on and off for years, just starting to enjoy it and get more serious and done a few 10k races comfortably. I go for 2 runs a week (used to be 30 mins each, increased not to 50-60 mins each at about an 8 minute mile pace so not fast. I also do a BMF session twice a week.

I have had shin splints before, to the point where I had to stop training, but then I was fine for ages. After this evenings run I can feel the soreness in my left shin returning and will be so gutted if ruins my training regime. Can I run through it or will it get worse? What can I do to make it go away and why do I keep getting it?

I have good trainers from a specialist running shop with support as I am an over pronater, I stretch properly before and after and don't think I have upped my training too quickly

popsycal · 06/09/2010 20:44

I have no idea DRnortherner butwelcome

and 8 minmiles is FAST!!!!!!!

do we need a new theread?!

OP posts:
HighFibreDiet · 07/09/2010 00:01

Welcome DrNortherner, there's a good Runner's World article about shinsplints here. I know you've already considered many of the causes they mention (overpronation, stretching, sharp increase in training) but it also suggests some other problems that may seem like shin splints, but have different causes.

If you don't think you have any of these and you don't want to stop running (which they also suggest Sad) I highly recommend going to a good physio as this has always helped me to deal with my various ailments. Smile Just make sure you find one who runs or who is used to treating runners.

stickylittlefingers · 07/09/2010 09:25

Not a medical expert (at all!) but my own experience was that I needed to get my thighs particularly and legs generally stronger, it was as if my lower leg was taking all the impact. I found doing lots of cycling really helped. Also adjusting my running style helped too.

But 8 min miles - blimey!

Popsy I looked back over the emails I'd had from GNR and it's today that is the day I should have got the pack by. Am also reassured by the fact that lots of people at work still don't have their pack too. Will be checking the post eagerly tonight!! I wonder why it's so late this year though compared to last.

Ooh and I want some virtue points too for going running in the rain this morning (and it was dark like winter). I figured it might be raining on race day so no point being a wuss now...

Goldberry · 09/09/2010 08:29

Looking at some of your posts with envy at your distances. My first 10k is fast approaching (26th September - gulp!) and although I have significantly increased my running time, I haven't yet managed to run for as long as it will take me to do the 10k. I did a 5k last year in 35 mins as a complete running novice. I'm guessing I'm a bit faster than I was back then, but will have to start out pretty slowly if I'm going to make it to the finish. Plus it's a hilly one! Feeling a bit apprehensive...

sfxmum · 09/09/2010 13:27

hello all squeezing in a post before the thread goes

fantastic results and such speed I am impressed

hope all up coming races go well and all niggles and injuries are healing

I have been going out regularly for shortish runs (3-6 miles) but have been cross training a bit more too with swimming and classes,
no plans for extending beyond 10k atm just taking it easy until the new year I think

happy running all

DrNortherner · 09/09/2010 17:32

Well I went out with my local running club and ran 6.2 miles and really enjoyed it. I was talking to one runner who does marathons and she says she lawys take a 2 nurofen 30 mins before a run, what do we think about that?

MoshiMoshi · 09/09/2010 18:11

Quick post to reply before we start a new thread:

DrNo - great running and pleased you are joining us. Have vague memories of you from breastfeeding board last year when my DC4 arrived..?

Think that you should investigate cause of pain and deal with it rather than symptom as would dictate way you treat it. Think taking drugs regularly is a way of avoiding dealing with the problem. I think finding a drug free way while we are relatively young and able is best for now. When I am in my 60s + and wanting to run, however, I shall be gulping everything available over the counter!

sfx - glad that you sound as if running. Has resumed in earnest! Keep it up!

gold - I am sure you will be fine and that as long as you hold a steady pace and save yourself for a final burst that your 10K time will surprise you.

The school run is literally turning into a school run as I have an extra 8 miles or so to my day which I am mostly running. I am pushing DCs 3&4 in the buggy but hoping that in keeping it slow am not going to bring on old injuries. Also praying an extra 8 miles a day is not going to result in overuse injuries...?!!!! Duathlon looming but going to treat as a training day as just two weeks to my HM and hoping to be fresh for it (easier said than done with school runs increasing weekly mileage but unavoidable unless I want to sit in traffic which I don't)

happy running all!

MrsWednesday · 09/09/2010 19:46

Blimey Moshi you must be pushing a fair bit of weight if you've got two children in the buggy and you're running 8 miles with them! I was going to complain about the extra 2 miles a day I'm now having to walk because DS1 has changed schools - I shall say nothing now!

Goldberry, you will be absolutely fine - the adrenaline on the day will get you through the extra kms. All the very best of luck, just set off at your usual pace and you will be able to cruise round no problem.

I'm doing a bit of steady running here and there, did a hill session on Tuesday - have finally managed to stop smoking too Blush so I'm hoping that I'll start seeing the benefits soon. Still contemplating seeing a gait analyst as I'm sore on my left side again which is v annoying.

Hope the GNR-ers are managing to stay injury free and your tapering includes lots of rest and nice food.

Dr Northerner, you sound like a seasoned runner yourself, doing 8 minute miles!

Happy autumn running! Better go as one my new kittens (3 of them...eek) is battering the back of the laptop.

Wheelybug · 10/09/2010 18:33

Think I just spotted a new thread so will go over there but just to say Goldberry I am doing a 10K the week after you and I have only run a 10K twice. Hoping to do another this weekend and then one next weekend. EEK.

Off to the other thread...
