Our thread has got too big.

Iwill start this one with two things:

Positive vibes for the exciting developments on the MN Marathon Relay thread and

Early ballot for GNR 2010 - you know you want to:)

Hello one and all and welcome back rollergirl. glad to gear some positive running is happening for you, popsy.

Regarding your thinking about changing the pattern of activity, gold, it is probably worth having a structured approach to getting faster eg speed sessions and tempo runs. Both aim to get the legs turning over quicker and the latter for a sustained period of time so as to boost the lactate threshold.

I am contemplating the dilemma of whether to focus on getting a longer distance in on the long run or sticking to the time-based approach and keeping the pace steady and slow dependant on how I feel that day. Many say getting a longer run in than the distance of your race itself prepares you well but others argue that it is simply time on your feet that matters and moving yourself at a slow pace that familiarises your system with a sustained period of (slow) running. I am erring on the side of caution not wanting to get injured and so going for time but in the past I would have banged out those miles to put in my log. I just want to feel I have done myself justice on race day I suppose and vanity is making me reconsider my decision...

Happy and injury-free running everyone. Am off for a long weekend with the family in Rome tomorrow. The hotel has an 800m running trail - hip hip hurrah - and I happen to be due to run a 800m VO2 interval session while there... Wink!

MoshiMoshi · 12/08/2010 23:11

PS feeling a bit bereaved. Not sure why but wish it would go away as everything is tinged with this awful melacholy. Sorry for whinge. Feels much better getting it out. Onwards we go!

Goldberry · 13/08/2010 07:40

Thanks Mrs Wednesday and Moshi. MrsW - I have one pair of those double skin ones - maybe I should invest in a few more! Sorry you're feeling down, Moshi. Onwards indeed.

Themasterandmargaritas · 13/08/2010 11:59

Envy at Moshi and all your lovely trips. Sorry you are feeling a tiny bit blue though.

Well done MrsW on getting out and about during your hols! Edinburgh marathon sounds great.

I am back to it the heat and the altitude and the bastard buggery hills. I went out for 10k this morning and had to walk loads so it took me 1hr bang on. I'm normally 56mins so that's some work I have to do.

I'm also aiming for some more interval/speed training, I think it's the only way forward, combined with one long-ish run of say 15k a week.

Welcome to newbies. Smile

How is the foot popsy?

GreatOrmondSt · 13/08/2010 13:37

Thanks HighFibre, I'm definitely going to check out Sam Murphy's book :). I was just lacing up my trainers to go out and try to do a 4k run when the heavens opened! A thunderstorm has replaced the glorious sunshine of 10 minutes ago Confused. Does anyone actually enjoy running in the rain?

Goldberry, running at Blenheim should be lovely (weather permitting), good luck!

Amy

popsycal · 13/08/2010 13:37

foot the same but luckily no worse :)

OP posts:
Goldberry · 13/08/2010 13:56

Yes that book sounds really good, HighFibre. Might have a look. Thanks, GreatO. I quite like running in the rain actually. I overheat so much when I run that anything which keeps me cool is definitely a good thing. Slightly minimises my angry beetroot look Blush.

drivingmisscrazy · 13/08/2010 15:36

can I join? on-off runner for years, but did a good 2-3 years of sustained runner until arrival of DD (18 months now) - just getting back into proper training (doing about 40k of very very slow miles a week) - hoping to to half-mara at the end of September - although not optimistic about this.

Anyone use low heart training? I've been trying - it's very tedious - running mostly at under 140 - but whilst it's easy and certainly staves off injury I'm not really convinced that it does anything other than teach your body to run slowly...so have added some intervals/tempos, which is anathema for low heart training aficionados...

but it makes you feel like a crap runner and I am not the kind of person for whom taking part is the reward Blush - this might be why I'm feeling unmotivated and don't want to run this week (plus lots of visitors, distractions etc)

hatwoman · 14/08/2010 21:43

Hi everyone - and welcome new blood, always good to swell our numbers! I'm just back from a sort-of holiday - 3 days in Bath with fil and wife and 3 days in London, staying at a friend's house (they were away on hols) near where we used to live - did one tourist thing (London Dungeon - dds' request. bit weird imo) and saw some old friends - and took advantage of being near decent shops to do some of the dreaded shoe-shopping with dds - which went remarkably well. went for a run in Richmond Park this morning - with hindsight I could have suggested (and would have loved) a sw-london mn-runners meet-up - but it didn't occur to me til 7 am this morning.maybe another time. Richmond was good - great views of the city - but it was SO crowded. ran with the dog and was constantly worried he was going to get mown-down by cyclists and/or bring them a-cropper. hope everyon'e doing ok.

popsycal · 15/08/2010 07:21

going out for 30-40 minutes once dh is up
It is meant to be my 10K tomorrow - not sure whether to risk it

OP posts:
popsycal · 15/08/2010 11:26

been to gym
30 mins hilly intervals
bit of time on cross trainer and bike and some weights for ham strings and gluteals...

OP posts:
hatwoman · 16/08/2010 23:15

OMG ladies...dh mentioned to a friend of his that I was doing this 20 mile fell race and would he like to join me...said friend is signed up for the marathon des sables. he's done the Trans'aq (230 km over 6 days) and various other ridiculous things. and he's only gone and said yes. and not only that said it in such a way as to imply we'd run together (he said he's no good at navigating so he'd need to rely on me). aaargh. and to cap it all he's gorgeous and rich. and I am unfit, slow, and scruffy. oh ffs.

peachsmuggler · 17/08/2010 08:20

Oh dear Hat, what was DH thinking!!!

I am sure you are gorgeous too, if not rich!! Wink

seriously though, is he a nice guy? Might be good to have someone interesting to run with. And if he's not interesting, maybe his gorgeousness will take your mind off the race!!!!

sfxmum · 17/08/2010 15:20

go on hatwoman impress himGrin
he is obviously barking but should be the good kind of barking mad - enjoy

not much running here as struck down by some ailment, not running related, doctor made disproving noises it took me so long to get things checked, anyway, gentle running to resume, until problem resolved.
meanwhile dh is powering away doing a duathlon and taking up rowing Envy

sfxmum · 17/08/2010 15:21

Themasterandmargaritas · 18/08/2010 10:00

Popsy Shock that is fantastic!

Hattie that sounds like alot of fun. We have a friend who has done marathon des sables. Nutters the lot of them.

Sfx, I hope you are not too under the weather? Get better soon.

10k for me this morning. It's difficult to get motivated now I am working part-time. I need a bit of a butt kick.

peachsmuggler · 18/08/2010 18:56

Great news popsy.

Hope you are ok sfx

Master - 10k seems like a far off distant memory here! Had very sluggish 4 miles and the same last Thursday. Had pretty poor sleep this week so am hoping that is all and that I have not lost ALL my fitness over the summer months. I remember feeling rubbish at all runs last summer too then miraculously super fit once the colder weather kicks in so here's hoping.

Have also regained half a stone having stuffed myself on holiday and after, but actually am happy with it as was looking a bit scrawny before. However have really noticed it when running. Feeling a lot heavier of arse!

Remind me everyone, what races we have coming up? I know popsy has GNR, and Hat has a hot date with a nutter....

CoupleofKooks · 18/08/2010 21:09

hello, i wonder if i could join you please ladies?
i started c25k back in march i think, and have built up until i did a 65 min run at the weekend, which i think (hope!) was about 10k
just went out this evening and did a nice 3 mile run, 27.5 mins

god it feels geeky to be saying the time and everything! but does interest me how far and how fast i am going

dp runs, as do a group of our friends, and they often enter races together
the wives and children stand and cheer Hmm
i have secretly entered a 5 mile race the weekend after next and dp and i are both going to run, instead of me standing and cheering
i am excited and nervous!

hatwoman · 19/08/2010 10:08

ooo CoupleOfKooks you're clearly being reeled in...if you like keeping track of times and distance thcn check out mapmyrun or the goodrunguide. And I bet you love the race....first race is brilliant - you'll get a real buzz.

popsycal · 19/08/2010 16:49

Just a question....I am buying runner shoes for dh(yes, really:)).

He has been checked out which confirms what we thought. Very high arches and so needs lots of cushioning. He also has quite broad feet. Basically, he is the absolute opposite of me!!!:)

Any suggestions?

OP posts:
Themasterandmargaritas · 19/08/2010 17:47

He needs to try them really popsy, but I am broad of feet, though not too high arches and my Nike Triax have been brilliant. My new Mizuno Waves are also good but I did have a knee twinge yesterday so I think the Triax are best for me. Also I go a size up, so normally a 5, and in runners I take a 6.

popsycal · 19/08/2010 19:25

Forgot to mention - physio today for follow upfor ilio tibial whatsit - more exercises and referral to podiatrist

mentioned weird foot swelling which continues to improve the more i runHmm

said ifit doesnt recur then just accept as one of those thingsbutif it flares againto go back as it willneed further investigation

OP posts:
CoupleofKooks · 19/08/2010 20:03

thank you hat i have used mapmyrun and liked it, but have been borrowing dp's garmin for the last few runs - i find it motivating to see how far i have gone - never dreamt i would be able to run whole miles really, let alone 5 miles or whatever :o

MoshiMoshi · 19/08/2010 21:39

Hello newbies and welcome!

Sorry you are not 100%, sfx. I am looking forward to your race report, hat Wink! And last, but not least, brilliant stuff, popsy. Onwards! Onwards!

Rome was fan-bloomin'-tastic! The kids loved it and we had such a relaxing time as the Italians love children. Seeing ancient Rome was strangely therapeutic for me and my low mood as it sort of brought everything back into perspective. I had been feeling very low about losing dad and immersing myself in ancient Rome reminded me of what a big and incredible world we live in that is simply too huge to rationalise. I also fit in my scheduled interval session and long run (much to DH's annoyance) and that helped my mood hugely. So everything is much more positive here thankfully.

Happy running everyone! Hoping to fit in Bootcamp and my tempo/strength session tomorrow. Week 7 of 12 of my HM schedule and just 3 weeks to my duathlon. Dusted down the bike and took it to the LBS to be serviced so am getting in the right frame of mind, sort of!
