Our thread has got too big.

Iwill start this one with two things:

Positive vibes for the exciting developments on the MN Marathon Relay thread and

Early ballot for GNR 2010 - you know you want to:)

OP posts:
Twink · 19/08/2010 22:44

The running thread sucks in all of those who like time/distance figures as well as those who are looking for encouragement....

Welcome!

Actually, I suspect we need a new thread soon as this is only loading at second attempt now as it's so big!

Hey Moshi, we seem to be at a similar ebb but hopefully MiniT and I are turning the corner too; bloodly awful though isn't it?

Popsy, as a high-instep, wide-footed person I rarely go with anything other than New Balance wide fitting, although occasionally I've had Saucony that have been ok. Adidas are too narrow and Asics don't work as the stitching rubs my instep - Duck tape helps a bit when that happens though.

Can finally come back here having done some running! 11 miles so far this week, split into 2 sessions. I did a sprint tri a couple of weeks ago, and have another in early September BUT my big news is that I'm joining Hat in the crazy world of fells and navigation as my entry to this year's OMM has been accepted - gulp! Sadly my partner, lovely though she is, isn't like Hat's...

Been busy since I was last here; training to be a climbing wall instructor is going well. I'm off to do my First Aid qualifications this weekend, which include a high altitude module too. I've volunteered to go with our VIth form trip to Mongolia in 2012 so I'm hoping that I'll be better qualified than any one else :)

Happy running all, Popsy you're doing really well, keep focused & you'll get through it xx

Twink · 19/08/2010 22:51

Missed a couple of bits! SFX, enjoy gentle running but don't let your dh's interests impinge on your child-care arrangements - your running is crucial!

M&M, consider yourself well and truly kicked in the right direction (as one new part-timer to another, I reckon I'm qualified!)

hatwoman · 19/08/2010 22:53

respect Twink - my paltry 20 miles just shrank.

MoshiMoshi · 22/08/2010 12:15

Slow 10 miles in the rain this morning. Now at the Thai Festival hoping to find some yummy lunch! Happy running everyone.

MoshiMoshi · 22/08/2010 12:16

PS Twink - love the new challenge!

hatwoman · 23/08/2010 18:19

Hi everyone. I did a partial recce this morning for my 20 miler but chickened out of part of it - Kinder Scout looked completely wild, covered in cloud/mist (clag as some call it) - I was on my own and had never done it before so decided to be sensible and stick to stuff I knew. So, if anyone's interested I
started by going up here
then up here
to the far hill www.trekkingbritain.com/070417-mamtorandthegreatridge/20070417G-HollinsCrossBackTorAndLoseHillMakeUpTheGreatRidge.JPG (the second, scary looking hill is actually the middle one in this photo)
then down to the bottom and up here.

mostly in the rain. delightful. I contemplated driving home nekkid as I was soaked to the skin and had no spare clothes with me. but, on balance, decided it probably wasn;t wise.

Twink · 23/08/2010 22:26

Good plan Hat!

The pics look fantastic, in a scary sort of way. This year's OMM is on Dartmoor so the organisers have decided that because we've not got proper tough hills like you, they're increasing our distance... Hmmm, know which I'd rather do! I was brought up on the edge of the Peak District and it 'calls' me when I see photos like that.

I've been in Snowdonia this weekend doing Mountain First Aid training but have sneaked out before breakfast each day for a quick 5-6k. Like Hat, I came back from one section as I was inadequately dressed for the clag that rapidly descended, had no map & compass and no-one would have had a clue where I was as I was out before the course had officially started so no-one would have missed me.. Except MiniT, who when I rang her on Saturday night said 'So Mummy, have you met anyone else as mad as you?'

hatwoman · 23/08/2010 22:36

hi again - the idea of trekking across Dartmoor terrifies me - at least in the peak district you're never really all that far from a road. I also noticed that for the OMM it says that if you don;t turn up at the camp they assume you're ok. that's just so hard core! and you're not allowed a mobile. so...just supposing you do get lost/break an ankle - you've got no means of calling for help and the people who know you're out there aren't going to call either. gulp.

MrsWednesday · 23/08/2010 22:52

Eeek, those are proper mountains! Puts my paltry little local slope to shame:

Rawdon Billing

Fabulous photos, how brilliant to be able to run there. When is your 20 miler?

Twink, how many miles is your OMM thing? It looks suitably horrendous and I am, as always, in awe of your madness fitness.

My sister and I managed to get out on Sunday for a decent 11 miles - it was a glorious, sunny morning and we found a new route through some woods so had a fab time. I was on a high all day yesterday.

Popsy, glad you are managing to get some miles in your legs, hope they continue to stay injury-free.

Moshi, your Rome trip sounds fab, and very timely.

Happy, injury-free running everyone - I'm so looking forward to the change of season and running on crisp autumn mornings.

hatwoman · 24/08/2010 10:40

mrsW - it's great that all-day post-run high isn't it? a good run, a good route, good company...completely marvellous. (we're all endorphin junkies really)

Wheelybug · 24/08/2010 17:34

Hi All

Popping in to say hello - am back from hols. Despite taking running stuff I didn't do anything the first week due to laziness in 35 degree heat and in the second week I made it to the gym early one day and did about 6K but had an odd thing going on with my leg and foot which is still ongoing (pins/needles numbness in foot and leg cramp). So, no running here at the mo and much pondering over leg.

Glad to see people are getting out and injuries are abating....

MrsWednesday · 26/08/2010 12:01

Quick one, has anyone been to see a gait analyst? I'm thinking about going to see one as I'm concerned that as I increase my mileage my hip problem is going to get worse.

Would welcome your thoughts as it seems to be quite expensive and I don't know whether it will be worth it.

MoshiMoshi · 26/08/2010 14:05

weds - yes definitely try it! It helped me a great deal and I have altered my gait which seems to keep the injuries at bay. Where do you live and do you have a recommendation?

MrsWednesday · 26/08/2010 14:11

Oh great, thanks Moshi. I am trying to work out whether I'm putting my left foot down differently than my right because I do get pains in my hip, knee and calf but it's only on my left side.

I'm in Leeds, have just googled and found a place that does it.

sfxmum · 28/08/2010 10:12

hello all

am in awe of the mountains that looks amazing and
twink impressive and inspiring as ever

I hope all niggles and injuries improve

summer break nearly done which should mean a little more time for running

apparently I might need surgery, routine stuff but none the less not what I wanted, we shall see, in the meantime I am keeping to shortish runs and some cross training to keep balance and sanity

happy running all

MoshiMoshi · 28/08/2010 18:51

sfx - hope it is nothing too serious and that you manage to continue with the running therapy.

Aching from my tempo run following Bootcamp yesterday but hopefully should be feeling good for my long run tomorrow morning.

Happy running and stay injury free all.

MoshiMoshi · 29/08/2010 22:35

13.5 miles today for my LSR. Slow but fairly steady at a pace giving me a sub-4 hour marathon. None of the usual niggles although my left hip is sore which I think means another trip to the chiropractor and less carrying of DC4 on my hip as it indicates a twisted SI joint for me usually. Less than two weeks to my first race and four till the half so had better start touting my justgiving page! Any kind souls interested in parting with their money to motivate me to train harder can contact me for details of the webpage!

Enjoy the bank holiday and happy running!

popsycal · 30/08/2010 07:51

PLanning 8miles today
gnr is in 3 weeks
dh thinks iought to defer

Do you think if i can do 10 miles next weekend (2 weks before), I could manage it?Injuries ok...

Ionly did 10miles beofre last years gnr...

Then I guess I oughtto taper...have been tapering for months!!

OP posts:
MoshiMoshi · 30/08/2010 14:55

popsy - I honestly think a half is very achievable as long as you take it easy eg consider a one minute walk break every 30 mins so it is like doing gentle back to
back 5Ks. That should avoid the ITB playing up as you are taking regular breaks. Aim to complete it comfortably instead of in a certain time so you are not clock watching and don't compare this year's effort to previous years when you had done training. Many people walk a lot of these distances and manage very respectable times!

peachsmuggler · 30/08/2010 18:22

Am sure you'll be fine popsy but follow moshi's advice and take it easy.

No running here due to bad back, hoping to get out little run tomorrow!

HighFibreDiet · 30/08/2010 21:43

ooh nearly time for a new thread

Just popping in to say I did my sprint tri today. I started off the run at a plodding pace and finished at the same pace - I had hoped I would speed up but didn't find it in me to do so. My swim was similarly slower than I expected. (I blame dp for being away and ds3 for many broken nights over the past few months.) Still, I am pleased I did the triathlon, and pleased with my new bike which was brilliant. I hope I managed to do a reasonable time overall. Also no hip/foot/pelvic pain which is all credit to my physio. My family are asking me what I'm aiming for next Smile

That OMM looks like a real challenge - but not on my calendar yet I think. Grin
Sorry sfxmum that you have to have surgery, glad to hear popsycal's swelling is getting better, sounds like you should do fine for the GNR and moshi too in your marathon. I completely agree with MrsW and hatwoman about the post-run high and I am also looking forward to autumn - not least because the kids go back to school and I may get a few more runs in than I have done over the summer.

In awe of the scenery and gradients on your runs, MrsW. Richmond Park is beautiful but not quite that challenging. Smile
CoupleofKooks. I expect you'll find that racing is much more fun than standing and cheering!

Better go to bed and get some sleep before ds3 wakes up again. Night all

MoshiMoshi · 31/08/2010 13:02

Congratulations and well done, highfibre!

Training continuing in ernest with intervals today, 6 x 600m with 90 seconds recovery followed by a 7 min mile to see if I had any speed left in my legs after the warm up and interval session. I have decided to end all my runs with a speedy burst to replicate race conditions. Sadly, I don't think I am a 7min miler at the moment but I can keep working on it I suppose. Onwards and upwards and happy running all!

popsycal · 31/08/2010 13:38

OH my god

8 miles 80 mins but sllloooooooow for last 2 miles. Illio tibial niggly.Just soaked my knee and ankle bandages and stuck them in the freezer for after my shower

am wrecked and dripping with sweat:)

Wheelybug · 01/09/2010 17:19

Well done Popsy ! Sounds hopeful for the GNR.

Well done everyone else.

Finally got back out running on monday - did 6 and a bit K and didn't find it easy but at least I was back out there ! Going again a bit later. 4 weeks till my 10K. Am a bit cross as was running 10K easily and quite fast (for me) - 55mins - before hols but now feel like I've fone backwards somewhat. Oh well, still time to get sorted I think !!

My bro is trying to get me to sign up for the Reading Half in March. Am tempted. Will see how the 10K goes !!

Twink - I've just spotted a thread on 'Sport and Exercise' asking if anyone else is doing the OMM ... just in case you wanted to share with a fellow nutter sportswoman !

MoshiMoshi · 02/09/2010 11:22

Big up for popsy! Glad you are also up and running, wheely. I reckon your pace will return rapidly in a few runs.

Bootcamped this morning as I like the conditioning it gives me. I am sure it has helped my running in strengthening my core etc. I can thoroughly recommend circuit type training a few times a week to anyone considering it. I also enquired about joining my local running club. I have wanted to do it for years but pregnancies and new babies have intervened. Anyway, I think it might help with my aim of getting some speed and longevity back in my legs so am going to try squeeze in a few sessions to see if it is possible to fit it into my week.

Happy and injury free running everyone!
