Our thread has got too big.

Iwill start this one with two things:

Positive vibes for the exciting developments on the MN Marathon Relay thread and

Early ballot for GNR 2010 - you know you want to:)

MUST
RUN

OP posts:
sfxmum · 26/07/2010 20:00

amen

Wheelybug · 26/07/2010 20:05

C'mon Popsy - you CAN do it.

Norway sounds active fun Twink. My parents just had a norwegian friend staying and she text when she got home to say it was 10 degrees and raining. Its funny to think of people coming to the UK for a warm holiday .

Back from New Forest here too. Did a 20 mile cycle ride although interspersed with 1 break for DH to do a conference call (in the middle of the forest - sigh) and another break to eat ploughmans and drink a pint. Not sure that was good for training .

Ran 7K last night. Seem to be running faster than I was which is good news (even allowing for inaccuracies in the new garmin foot pod).

Going to struggle to get out this week just when I need it most as DH unlikely to be around much so will probably have to do the unthinkable and get up at 6 a couple of mornings. Eeeeeek but a bikini beckons (actually not sure I will brave a bikini but swim wear of some sort beckons...)

peachsmuggler · 27/07/2010 17:37

Up at 6!!! Goodness wheely you are very dedicated. I salute you madam.

After weeks of being away, having people to stay and very hot weather, finally have a few weeks of normal life so am back back back! Still not doing any speed training/very long runs/races until summer is over, but will get back to doing 3 runs EVERY week. DP not working from next week (until he finds a new contract) so will take the opportunity to run during day while he looks after DD. Might even run 4 times a week. We shall see

Pint and a ploughmans sounds blimmin lovely!

Wheelybug · 27/07/2010 20:24

I haven't done it yet Peach so hold that suluting !! Tomorrow may be the day though - but then I think I will run twice at the weekend instead of another 6 am !

popsycal · 27/07/2010 20:38

4 miles 40 mins.
struggled and got a stitch which I never get

It was slow (and a little bit rubbish tbh)

BUT
I did it!!!!

It is a little bit sad but I have really lost my drive to run

I need to find it

My lovely godmother died yesterday aged 48 after a 5 year battle with cancer. When she was diagnosed, she was given 6 months so did remarkably well. She has 5 children ranging from 16 to almost 9. I am glad she had more time with them than she thought she would. But all very very sad

OP posts:
peachsmuggler · 27/07/2010 22:43

Oh popsy, am so sorry. That is awful news, you must be very upset. How terrible for her children too.

Wheelybug · 28/07/2010 13:13

POpsy - How terribly sad for you all. Well done on the running though. Take each step at a time.

Wheelybug · 28/07/2010 13:15

Oh and I didn't get out at 6 this morning Peach. I set my alarm, all my stuff was ready, DH was primed to go to work a bit later and even though I got to bed late and dd2 was up for a while in the night I was still determined until just before my alarm was due to go off I woke up with stomach pains and had to dash to the loo and felt a bit rough after it (think it was just too much chilli last night having its effect) so went back to sleep.

Maybe tomorrow (or maybe I'll just run at the weekend......)

sfxmum · 28/07/2010 14:30

Popsy sorry for your loss
regarding running if it is any consolation you are still doing better than me

hello everyone
we are off to Dorset in the morning, have not been running at all since last week, super busy weekend and insomnia plagued week, must do better next week when we are back

happy running all

popsycal · 28/07/2010 20:11

Thanks for all your kind words folks.

Just paid for my place on 10k on Monday 16th August.

45 minutes tomorrow - should be somewhere between 4 and 5 miles

OP posts:
MoshiMoshi · 28/07/2010 21:02

popsy - poor you and I really do feel for the children who have kist their mum. I found running hard when dad died as it is such a spiritual thing for me. Would running with a chatty partner help distract perhaps? The solitude of being alone with my thoughts left me in tears for months when running. Big hugs.

wheely - even the best intentions eh?!

sfx - enjoy Dorset!

Managing to keep the plan up doing 4x200s yesterday and a 60 min recovery run today. No need to run tomorrow but may go for a short 5K trot as am at inlaws so plenty of scope to disappear for a run. Then a further interval / tempo session due on Fri. Feeling v sluggish though and not sure why...

Happy running all. May the force be with you.

MoshiMoshi · 28/07/2010 21:05

Sorry should have said "lost".

MoshiMoshi · 30/07/2010 09:28

Tempo session done today. Finding this HM schedule very light but given tendency to overdo things and injure myself this is probably not a bad thing. Happy running one and all. Have a great weekend. Extra happy running vibes to Popsy.

popsycal · 30/07/2010 09:29

lovely early run - just over 5 miles in a littleunder 50 minutes. Felt really good and no stitches, no sore leg! Made me think that maybe I CAN do this after all!!

OP posts:
popsycal · 30/07/2010 09:30

crossed posts with you moshi!

OP posts:
MoshiMoshi · 30/07/2010 19:03

Hurray, Popsy! I have re-read my HM schedule and I think I might have been meant to do a hill session after my tempo run or something which may explain why I feel undertrained? I am a bit confused about what this silly schedule is suggesting now! (see the marathon-training.com website if minded to interpret...)

popsycal · 30/07/2010 22:39

moshi - I looked at your schedule a few weeks back and it seemed very confusing!!!

I liketo have a schedule but am settling for just getting out at the minute as lookingat what i should be doing is scary!!

OP posts:
MoshiMoshi · 31/07/2010 15:28

Have decided to follow schedule loosely and adapt as appropriate. Today did long run as probably sailing on Norfolk Broads tomorrow. 110 mins slow. Slight ITB strain until I focused on running more John Wayne style.

HighFibreDiet · 31/07/2010 23:13

Hi all, sounds like you have been busy. Well done to Popsycal for getting out and running again, and so sorry to hear about your godmother. Twink's activity levels are always awe-inspiring and MoshiMoshi's schedule doesn't sound terribly light to me but then I've never done a half marathon!

I had some scary pelvic pain two weeks ago (just like the SPD I had when pregnant) but got myself to a physio and am running again - have done two 30 min runs in the last week and felt okay. The pelvic pain did reappear after about 20 mins and the morning after, but seems to disappear as the day goes on. Thankfully the physio says my symphisis pubis is closed and my pelvis is level so I just need to do some core strengthening rather than anything more serious.

Finding it hard to fit in all my training now the summer holidays are upon us and I have 3 boys to look after every weekday. Had an argument with dp regarding getting him to look after the kids in the evenings so I can train, but I won't go into it here as I think we are now both fairly happy with the new arrangement.

I think dp's grumbles may be secretly down to jealousy. He has had an ankle injury for a while so has missed out on playing football and hasn't found anything else to replace it. He's talked about having swimming lessons so if I help him to arrange that he might not resent my outings so much.

I made a mistake with my triathlon training, though - I intended to start a 6 wk schedule one week early to allow for injury/rest/holiday but instead wrote it one week late in my diary. So I've started on week 2 and hoping it won't be too much of a shock to my system!

I know it sounds selfish but going out for runs (and cycling and swimming) has become so important to me as it's something which is purely for me - not employment, not having to support anyone else as a mum or a partner or daughter. I don't really get any other time to myself (unless I stay up very late as I am tonight) and it's improving my health to boot!

About to trawl the mumsnet archives for comments about getting a road bike, but if there's nothing useful I might post a question in this section so advice from seasoned triathletes will be appreciated.

happy running everyone.

peachsmuggler · 01/08/2010 22:15

Moshi - sounds like you are going great guns with your training. Well done.

Popsy - glad you are getting out there

highfibre - I completely concur with you. Having just a little bit of time to do something for youself is so important. I really find it keeps me sane (and I have only got 1 dc so probably get a lot more "me time" than you! Glad you and your DP have been able to come to an agreement.

Did 6 miles this morning for first time in weeks. It was ok but still not enjoying the summer running. Was very very red faced on my return!

Wheelybug · 02/08/2010 09:03

Well done Popsy and moshi on getting on with the training !

Highfibre - good luck with the tri training and glad you've sorted something out with dh. I missed running during the week last week as DH was out before 7 am and back about 11pm. Its hard during the hols isn't it. Also can sympathise a bit with the DH wanting to do more - my DH was seriously ill 2 years ago and has an ongoing condition. He was trying to push himself with running but with working as he does it was taking its toll. His consultant last week told him to only run 5K and only when he feels up to it. So I think he feels a bit miffed when I come back having run faster/longer etc. He's being v. supportive but I can tell he feels frustrated.

I ran twice over the weekend to try and make up for hte lack of running in the week. Saturday felt really good - ran faster than normal and actually felt like I'd benefitted from a bit of a break. Went again last night and it was much harder. Admittedly I did the last Kilometre carrying a bag of shopping but still it was hard.

Peach - I agree about summer running, but well doen on the 6 miles !

MoshiMoshi · 02/08/2010 13:23

Totally agree that Me Time is important. Also think DHs can get very jealous about wives having Me Time as even before the DCs I recall my DH thinking me going for a daily run was an imposition on our time. However, us wimmin must take a stand for ourselves! We must run! We must not be kept at home getting more and more lardy! We must get out and boost those endorphins and sense of purpose! We must ruuuuuuuun!!!!! (cue: wild applause)

Bootcamp this morning but not sure how to get out for my run with DH away on business and no cleaner to watch kids today. Hmmm.

MoshiMoshi · 02/08/2010 13:42

Highfibre - the only thing I would say about bikes is:

  1. Road or tri?
  2. Carbon or aluminium?
  3. Which type of groupset?
  1. I went for a road bike and added tri bars which seemed to make me plenty fast enough to burn up the cycle leg. Tri bikes are more limited on hilly course and, as you can imagine, are tri specific. Having said that, they can be much faster and some swear by them especially on flat course where they add disc wheels and you can hear them coming up behind you like a swarm of bees as they whizz by as if you are standing still.
  1. There are far more types eg titanium but these are the main two categories. The difference being weight and price. The lighter the bike the more you will pay. It us said that a weight difference can take minutes off your bike leg (on a standard distance tri) without any adjustment to training or your weight. I went for carbon and found that I took minutes off my bike leg.
  1. Blokes get very het up about groupsets I think because this is the more technical aspect of the bike. When I last looked it was either Campag or Shimano although Twink may have more uptodate knowledge here. For the record, I went for a Campag as I got a Bianchi Veloce carbon fibre bike which takes this. I think you are stuck with the sort you opt forE, Think it's a yes to next weekend but my annoying husband is enjoying holding off confirming until tonight. He is hungover and not willing to be pressgang once you buy your bike.
MoshiMoshi · 02/08/2010 13:45

Oooh. Somehow managed to post a bit of an email on the end of my message. Was obviously not pleased with DH at the time . that is the problem with an iPhone. As well as rubbish spelling.
