Our thread has got too big.

Iwill start this one with two things:

Positive vibes for the exciting developments on the MN Marathon Relay thread and

Early ballot for GNR 2010 - you know you want to:)

Congratulations Hat!

popsycal · 06/08/2010 17:10

back from doc.
she rang the hospital while i was there and asked the a and e consultant to review my x rays.

They had already been reviewed by a radioologist the day after I went. Consultant looked again and said there was no fracture and also, there was no evidence of any fluid around the bone which can signify a hairline fracture which has not shown up on the x ray

DOc also said she doesnt think it is tendonitis either as I can wiggle my toes without pain.

so unexpplained!!!
Have had tube bandage on today which has helped with the swelling.

going to give it a few more days rest then try to get running again. only 5 weeks til gnr Shock

Thank you for the holiday feedback everyone!

popsy - any improvement today? If nothing is broken I think I would be inclined to keep running. But then I do tend to injure myself a lot.

hat - 15 years is a long time! Many many congratulations and here's to many more happy healthy years together. We are on our 10 year anniversary this year. In just a few weeks in fact Smile!

I am very cheerful today having seen my horse yesterday and received a shiny new Garmin 405CX from my husband who researched the best GPS watch for me. It arrived complete with bike cadence sensor and strap too! Who says men aren't practical?!

Bootcamped this morning which had some short sprinting in it so will take the rest of the day off and save myself for my long slow run tomorrow morning.

Happy running ladies!

hatwoman · 07/08/2010 21:12

hi all - popsy - hope it gets better soon. did 12 miles with 2000 feet of climb this morning and I am wrecked. feeling very nervous about this race I'm aiming for - 20 miles / 3700 feet in early october. really not sure I'll ever be fit enough. the hills just kill me.

HighFibreDiet · 08/08/2010 23:53

Ran for 50 minutes today near Kettering, with hills! Not sure how far I went - certainly not as far as I had been planning, as I felt pretty knackered, but at least I went out. Some twinges in pelvic and hip area but nothing terrible.

I am quite pleased with myself. I know it is nothing compared to certain people (moshimoshi, Twink, hatwoman you know I am talking about you) but I am still challenging myself which is what it's all about. Grin And dp didn't grumble about being left in the hotel with the boys for a little while.

Congratulations to hatwoman and mr hat, and hope popsy's foot improves.

MoshiMoshi · 09/08/2010 11:35

Well done, highfibre. Where do you get twinges as I get these too in my left hip which is to do with carrying DC4 on my left hip. It twists everything and locks my SI joint. I have to try not to carry her on at least carry her on my front otherwise I can feel the pain in my hip which signals it's time to see the chiropractor. I see him on average once every six weeks at the moment! I have sent you a message too about the bike.

popsycal · 09/08/2010 16:19

hi folks

Hi everyone, thought I'd join this thread as I need some inspiration and motivation to keep running and training. I'm up to just under 4km running in the mornings (it's down to a couple of mornings a week lately :() and I've got to get in shape before my big race in September. How do others fit running in around the DC and family life in general?

Thanks

Amy

hana · 09/08/2010 18:34

i'm not a biggie on this thread but I go for a run first thing in the morning before dh goes to work. is easier in the spring/summer - right now it's about 6am during the week. weekends I don't go til about 8!

MoshiMoshi · 09/08/2010 20:04

Hello GreatOrmondSt - I try to go running when DH is back in the evenings or when the cleaner is in. The other week I fit in a speed session after hockey training as I had an evening babysitter booked. The only way to fit it in is to be obsessive about forward planning the runs for when someone is going to be around! I used to go running everywhere with DCs 3&4 when I had dropped DCs 1&2 at school but have since ditched the buggy when running as it messed up my stride. Which race are you doing in September?

popsycal · 09/08/2010 20:37

welcome greatormondstreet

can anyone remember what the distance that 'people' reckon you ought to be able to do a monthbefore a half marathon? It is six weeks away and I need to be sure that I can safely up the distance....

OP posts:
MoshiMoshi · 10/08/2010 10:54

popsy - there are plenty of six week schedules out there which suggest you have time to get yourself ready in time. I think they say if you can cover half the distance comfortably now you will be able to run 13.1 miles on race day. Knowing that you should try to just get out and run without worrying about the approach. I am sure once you have a few runs under your belt it will feel more achievable!

GreatOrmondSt · 10/08/2010 16:05

Thanks for the welcome, Moshi and Popsycal:)
Cheers for the tips Moshi, forward planning is the way to go. DH, MIL or my mum will have to have the DC a bit more often. The only thing is, when I've got time to myself, something else always needs doing like the washing, ironing or cleaning. I think I'll mention to the DH that we need a cleaner too!

I'm doing the adidas 5km Challenge in September (it's not that big, but 5km is a long way for a novice like me!) I'm of course running for Great Ormond Street Hospital so that's still motivating me. Is anyone else doing any runs soon?

Amy

popsycal · 10/08/2010 21:09

hmmm why would my foot be puffier than ever and aching like mad almost two weeks after my non-injury...

peachsmuggler · 10/08/2010 22:12

Hi GreatO and welcome!

Is this going to be your first race? It will be a great day am sure. The adrenalin is very powerful and as soon as you get your breath back after the finish line you'll be planning a 10k! It's a great cause too so well done and good luck!

No races planned at mo for me, just ticking over for the summer and races on hold due to future baby planning!

Had fantastic 4 mile run today in cooler temp and last bit was in the rain, which was lovely.

popsy, that doesn't sound so good. Hope it starts to heal soon Smile

Goldberry · 11/08/2010 10:04

Hi GreatO - peachsmuggler is right, it will be great. I did a 5k last year as a complete novice. Took up running to lose weight and reduce my bp. I'd always hated running at school and was very unfit. To my amazement I did the 5k fairly easily and even felt I could have run a bit further. I hadn't been keen to run with a group, but was surprised during the race by how much I enjoyed running with others. It made me run faster and not notice the hard slog so much!
I'm now training for my first 10k at the end of September.
As far as fitting running into your schedule goes, I tend to run in the evening when dh is at home, but I found that really hard in the winter as I don't like running in the dark. As a result, I did much less running over the winter and it took me quite a while to get back on track. I put on weight and it was a real effort of will to get going again. I need to find a solution to that this winter, but I'm not sure how!

GreatOrmondSt · 11/08/2010 12:02

Thanks for the lovely encouragement peachsmuggler and Goldberry, I really appreciate it :)

It will be my first race and although you can walk the distance, I really want to run it. Goldberry your story has inspired me, hopefully my 5km will go as well! I know it will be a great day out with all the girls supporting each other. Good luck for your 10km, where are you doing that?

And good luck with baby planning peachsmuggler!

Themasterandmargaritas · 11/08/2010 12:44

I am back with you all after my France and UK trips. Smile

Next half marathon is the end of October and so will start to get out again from Saturday. But I've just started work part-time so it's going to be a struggle.

I'm going to catch up now and find out what you've all been up to....

Goldberry · 11/08/2010 17:04

You're welcome, GreatO. Seriously, if I can do it, anyone can! My 10k is the Blenheim Palace one - beautiful scenery, but rather hilly. Which reminds me, must get in some hills practice...

sfxmum · 11/08/2010 20:43

hello all

welcome to new contributors to this obsession
hope everyone is well

managed only 3 runs over the last 7 days but hope to improve averages

just wanted to say how glad I am that I keep logs, even a slight improvement can really boost morale

Rollergirl1 · 11/08/2010 22:49

Hi ladies, think I might try and join you again. At the moment I am trying to get out running twice a week. I tend to do 10k for one run and about 8k for the 2nd run. I also swim twice a week. But I have been doing this for months now though and am definitely feeling like i've plateau'd. I guess my next step is to up my distance to something like 10 miles. But I looked at the bupa training program and it recommends training 4 times a week. I just don't think I would find the time to do that. I guess I could if I cut out the swimming but I enjoy my swimming sessions. Also I was beginning to find that running even just 3 times a week was having a serious affect on my joints. I am maintaining the same speed too, I can do 10k in 58 mins. I am keen to improve on this. But how? Should I do interval training or go for further distance and the speed will come? I am still loving the running but just feeling like I've stagnated somewhat.

Any opinions/advice welcome!

HighFibreDiet · 12/08/2010 00:10

Hello again everyone. No more runs here but logged in to see how you were all doing! Welcome to GreatOrmondSt and Rollergirl1. I'm still a relative beginner but I found Sam Murphy's book "Run for Life" great for keeping me motivated. She has loads of ideas for how to push yourself further - interval training etc. - and stuff to remind you how good running really is for your body.

If you're trying to get faster, I suspect interval training would be better than trying to increase the distance. Or joining a running club, or finding a race to aim towards. Just like Goldberry, I quite like running on my own but I find I do faster times when in a group.

In terms of fitting the runs in, I train in the weekday evenings or weekend mornings when dp is around - but see my comments earlier on about him getting fed up with this! It's loads harder during the summer and dp is off to Australia soon Shock so I have booked my older boys in to summer camps otherwise I will find it really hard to get the training in before my sprint tri at the end of the month.

Sorry to hear your foot is still bad, popsy. It does sound worrying.

Moshimoshi, my twinges are down my right hip/ilio-tibial band, and bang on my symphisis pubis joint - both of which were problems while pg with ds3. I've been to the physio lots. Stretches help with the hip/ITB pain and I'm currently doing some serious core strengthening work which should help with the spd stuff.

I've replied to your message about the bike.

Goldberry · 12/08/2010 12:06

Phew. Just managed a 50 minute run. Very slow, but I'm not really bothered about speed at this stage - I just want to make sure I can run for long enough to finish the 10k. Until very recently my legs always massively outlasted my cardiovascular fitness, but now it's the opposite. I was really pleased not to feel completely breathless and exhausted at the end of 50 minutes, but my calves are killing me!
Also, on my last couple of runs I have got blisters. I've never had this problem before. My trainers are normally fantastically comfortable. Maybe it's because I've been pushing myself a bit more. Or maybe I just laced them too tightly Hmm. Any other blister sufferers among you ladies?

popsycal · 12/08/2010 18:10

hurray
10k
an hour

a few aches and pains but foot not hurting but is still swollen
illio-tibial whatsit is niggling slightly....but hurray

What kind of socks do you wear Goldberry? I've got some double-skin ones now as I found normal sports socks gave me blisters once I started running a bit further.

Good news about the injury Popsy, hope it continues to improve.

Back from our holiday in France, where I managed to fit in a few 4-5 mile runs - have utmost admiration for you TheMaster, I have no idea how you manage to run in heat and at altitude.

I've officially signed up and paid for the Edinburgh Marathon next year - eek!
