Our thread has got too big.

Iwill start this one with two things:

Positive vibes for the exciting developments on the MN Marathon Relay thread and

Early ballot for GNR 2010 - you know you want to:)

These are they!

Sadly I paid 75

TutTutter · 19/05/2010 20:54

the rrp of my running shoes is >£100

but i get the older models online and generally pay more like £70

TutTutter · 19/05/2010 20:57

look! www.sportsshoes.com/product/MIZ714/mizuno-lady-wave-nirvana-6-running-shoes/

but www.sportsshoes.com/product/MIZ669/mizuno-lady-wave-nirvana-5-running-shoes/ SO much cheaper for last year's model

might get a pair or two at that price actually...

fishie · 19/05/2010 20:57

i get men's shoes because i have very long toes and high instep. my current ones are lime and oh they look revolting. ds said 'mummy did you choose those or did they just give them to you?" £80 and i can't look down.

orm i was wondering how your tendonitis was today. how is the therapy going?

OrmRenewed · 19/05/2010 22:24

Well I stopped it. Because he told me to - it's down to me to keep it going - with massage and cold water after a run. It proved one thing to me - that I can make it bearable and that running with it isn't going to cripple me for life (which was one of my stupid fears).

MoshiMoshi · 20/05/2010 09:16

Shoes shoes shoes. I have decided my shoes of choice for the past ten years need to be replaced by more of a neutral stability shoe. I have run in Asics Gel Kayanos for ten years but am focusing on moving away from the orthopaedic shoes to getting my core, weak glutes etc to work harder to make up for my biomechanical inefficiencies. It may all go horribly wrong but at least I will have saved money as the Kayanos are ludicrously expensive even if I but last year's models.

orm Glad to hear your are (tentatively) back to running. I have tendonitis in both ankles with ITB strain on both sides now. Ah well. At least I am symmetrical... Hoping working on my gait will eradicate these problems, if they are symptomatic of a poor running style.

Happy running everyone and welcome to the newcomers.

MoshiMoshi · 20/05/2010 10:19

Oooh. Employed new running style as advised by sports rehab lady and just ran 4.11 miles in just over 30 minutes. I am not quite at sub-7 min/miling but it is amazing what just a change in technique can do. Now to work on that fitness and slowly ramp up the mileage (without injuring myself)... In case you are interested, I was quad dominant before so have to focus on kicking up my heels as well as taking those smaller, John Wayne style strides, and using my arms more. I see now how my style meant I was effectively braking with each stride. No wonder it was so much effort and so little gain!

HighFibreDiet · 20/05/2010 16:07

Hello again. haven't been running recently apart from 10 mins on a treadmill just before my swim today (going to build up the run time in preparation for my aquathlon in about 5 wks time). Taking my bike for a service tomorrow so will probably run back from the bike shop.

Interested in your sports rehab lady, MoshiMoshi, how much did she cost? (Although i will probably have to double it for London .)

Got cramps on Monday during my swim training and tingly hands and fingers after today's swim. Hoping it's just down to a salt imbalance (I and the boys have been eating lots of crisps) and not anything more serious. Have googled and scared myself. Wish I were 20 again and blithely unaware of all the things that can go wrong with my body .

popsycal · 23/05/2010 10:46

Hurrah!

A run for me. Ipod died but I reckon somewhere between 4 and 5 miles - about to check mapmyrun. Exceptionally hot here. It was hard work and a bit of a plod but I ran for 45-50 minutes ish so quite pleased.

Really want to regain my stamina and start cranking up the distances again but forcing myself to be sensible and injury-free.

DH has taken boys out to see inlaws for the day and I have given myselfthe task of tackling this bombsite.

I may be some time

Happy running

4.6miles
and housework

badgermonkey · 23/05/2010 11:28

Went out at 7, did about 6.5 miles but had to walk the last half-mile because it was so damn hot! I set out to do eight but thought it was daft to push too hard in this weather. There will be plenty of cooler days to come, I'm sure!

First run of the year in shorts, though (I live by the coast so there's usually enough of a breeze to make capris bearable, but not today).

azazello · 23/05/2010 14:47

I went out at 8 this am when it was clear that DS didn't intend to nap after getting up at 6 and that DH couldn't pretend to be asleep any longer... I did 5k in 30mins but found the last 1k really hard. My back and legs have been feeling sore all week so didn't want to push much. I think it is lovely cuddly and heavy DCs rather than running!

Also interested to hear about the sports rehab person though a 7 minute mile is the stuff of dreams atm!

popsycal · 23/05/2010 14:56

tutter
I always get my shoes at sportsshoes.co.uk - always buy around april ish as the previous season's ones are at a really good price

got my new brooks adrenaline for slightly over 40 quid - reducded then found a 20% discount code and free delivery

Well done on all of you running in this heat. I managed 4 miles yesterday-no time for more as friends watching dd for me as a favour because dh is awAy. Did 30 mins of Pilates today and intend a hard gym session (Inc running) tomorrow. I read a training programme for weight loss in the Times yesterday andmay give it a go- although it is hard core! I'm not overweight, but wouldn't mind dropping 1/2 a stone . A couple of pounds seem to have clung to me over the last few months.

Themasterandmargaritas · 24/05/2010 11:56

I did 15k this morning in 1hr 32 on my very hilly route and it was sunny so probably slightly hotter than you all have it just now.

We were away this weekend at an even higher altitude than here, with killer hills so I did a couple of 8ks up huge hills and down huge hills.

It's way too hot for me to run in capris, I just melt.

I have an ENORMOUS headache now though....

Wheelybug · 24/05/2010 14:06

Its hot for us M&M . Don't know how you do it though all the time !

I went out for a hot 5K last niht about 8pm having been drinking champagne for much of the afternoon. Not sure it was a great idea but wanted to keep the routine up. Did 7K in gym on friday too. Hlaf term looming though so will have3 to be v. disciplined to do evening runs next wk.

My shoes are more expensive on that website than I paid ! I paid £80 and they are £85 there. Brooks something or others. Will keep an eye out end of season though.

Tis cooler again from tomorrow .......

notyummy · 24/05/2010 14:18

Planning to leave work early and try and fit a quick 5k in before I pick up DD. Really difficult to fit it in with DH away. Was going to go to the gym at lunch, but meeting called instead.

Themasterandmargaritas · 24/05/2010 14:58

Wheely I have just checked, our temps are about the same today roughly around 24/25 degrees.

Wheelybug · 24/05/2010 18:01

Actually, M&M, if its as hot here as forecast in London it was going to get to 30 degrees (sticks tongue out and runs away).... .

But, 20 tomorrow and 14 wednesday and of course rain for the bank holiday

MoshiMoshi · 27/05/2010 19:26

highfibre and azazello - I went to Sport Dimension who are dotted around London. Check out their website for details. Progress is slow but steady. I find by ditching the watch and just focusing on form each session gets better although I am aching in new places where I am engaging different muscles eg I am more forefoot dominant with my footstrike which means my calves are being used much more. Funny how it can make such a difference!

Off to hockey this evening and must try not to exacerbate the hamstring strain. Happy running all and stay injury free.

Twink · 27/05/2010 22:41

LOL Saggars, yep, still trying to sell my hills..

Training is going well at the moment (apart from swimming which is still a complete embarrassment) but not much running, apart from transition sessions to do the wobbly triathlon leg thing. My cycling is coming on really well, I even did a hill rep session on the bike this week saggars but it really shows I'm improving!

Interned Mr T at the weekend, should have been with little bro as he was scheduled to fly in from his meeting in Europe but the situation in Bangkok meant he had to get home asap as we lost contact with his wife & family as they live right by all the protests - really tough couple of days but things have calmed down for the moment.

My thoughts were with you Moshi as it echoed your situation albeit yours was with the ash cloud.

It's a beautiful place and I popped in tonight while miniT was at her piano lesson.

Scary to think that I've only got 3 weeks until the big day, so effectively only 2 weeks of training..

One of my running groups organised a fund raising barn dance at the weekend, almost £1k to add to our total which is fab!

Happy running all,

Tx

MoshiMoshi · 28/05/2010 07:45

Twink - I think the wobbly leg thing can be lessened if you focus on gait after exiting T2. Cycling, especially on a hilly course, can be quad focused and I think my run splits suffered from being tired and falling into my old habits. I wonder if running with heels kicking back and arms well positioned and pumping would help that initial "my legs won't work!" moment? Thanks for the thought and glad to hear Mr T is where you can visit him. Yet to do dad and as his birthday would have been on Sunday am having lots of wobbly moments at the moment.

Happy running all!

Themasterandmargaritas · 29/05/2010 10:36

Gosh Moshi you and Twink, you are such pros. I feel like a mere debutante.

I have four weeks til my big and tough half. Tomorrow I am doing 18k.

How can I get myself to go faster between now and then? Lots of fast 5ks pushing myself??

Themasterandmargaritas · 29/05/2010 10:39

Oh and Twink, sorry to hear there was a hitch at the internment. It must have been very tough for you all, especially mini-T, but great that you have a beautiful spot to go to, to think about Mr T.

sanfairyann · 30/05/2010 19:34

thinking of you Twink - so sorry to hear about the internment problems and hope your family in Bangkok are ok

signing in to report second 10k race - 3 mins faster so some signs of progress and came in at just under an hour so also my target
