Our thread has got too big.

Iwill start this one with two things:

Positive vibes for the exciting developments on the MN Marathon Relay thread and

Early ballot for GNR 2010 - you know you want to:)

Thanks for all the advice. Finally managed to get the BUPA half marathon training plan. Their web site was down most of the weekend.

I was feeling hopeful last week. Did a combination of cross trainer and treadmill for 5 km. Spoke to one of the staff at the gym, and tried to get as much information from him for free . He showed me some stretches and warm up exercises.

And then got DD's virus, so haven't been back at the gym....

sanfairyann · 17/05/2010 21:20

running club was great and there's a few of us doing the GNR so I'm hoping we can inspire each other. really enjoyed it and did run a bit faster than normal too. thanks again for the link goldberry

Goldberry · 18/05/2010 08:29

You're welcome, sanfairyann - glad you enjoyed it. Is your group less of a beginners one then? I'm thinking probably yes if some of them are doing the GNR! Some of the people at mine have never run at all, although everyone's making really good progress.

TutTutter · 18/05/2010 17:48

hi goldberry - are you in oxon?

saggarmakersbottomknocker · 18/05/2010 18:03

Hello you lot - glad to see some fab running going in my absence and lots of new peeps. And you Twink - still spouting that 'the hills are your friends' line.

I'm trying to find the time to get back to my running. It will happen. Eventually.

TutTutter · 18/05/2010 19:23

it's been bliss running just for fun since the marathon - setting out at whatever pace feels right and running for as much/little time as i fancy

all of a sudden my medium-distance training runs (10-13 miles) sound looooo-o-o-ooong - have been sticking with 10ks

TutTutter · 18/05/2010 19:23

darn those pesky ^s

azazello · 18/05/2010 20:11

I've just read back a bit on the thread. Hello Goldberry I've signed up for the Blenheim 10k too. We live pretty near and go there a lot at weekends for the cakes playgrounds so I'm hoping to get a bit of practice in on the hills before the race. My brother is running as well and can do 10k in 54 minutes. Whichever of us wins has to make a donation to the BHF...

I think I need to practice.

Hi TutTutter, I certainly am in Oxon. In the Abingdon area. And hi azazello - we go to Blenheim a lot at the moment too, we did that deal where you convert your day ticket to a year pass, so we're there all the time. I think I might have persuaded a couple of people from my running group to do the Blenheim 10k too. The more the merrier

Themasterandmargaritas · 19/05/2010 08:39

Finally an outdoor run for me, 12k in the mud a little slower than normal but with new shoes (very exciting) so they do that achey in the instep thing at first.

Jajas, get yourself a proper pair of running shoes, should cost about £60 and then get the BUPA couch to 5k programme and follow that, we shall have you running 10k in no time.

Tut, we all entered the ballot did you see? Are you proud of us?

C'mon Saggars, get with it, man up and get out there.

When's your big race Twink? Anyone else racing soon?

notyummy · 19/05/2010 09:35

jajas - would second the advice from masterand margaritas. You need to get proper running trainers - not necessarily huge white bricks, but designed to support you so you less likely to get achy joints. If you go to a running shop (rather than places like JJB sports where the staff haven't a clue) then the staff will help fit you. As long as you give them your budget they should be able to find you something suitable.

Wheelybug · 19/05/2010 10:10

BUt M&M your new running shoes will be all covered in mud .

Welcome Jajas - As M&M says get good shoes and a good programme - BUPA or the Couch to 5K programme (good if you have ipod/mp3 as you can download the programme with music so it tells you when to walk/run so you're not constantly looking at your watch). Will find some links for you...

DId 7.5K ish on sunday outside and 7K on treadmill yesterday. Feeling back with it at long last !

Wheelybug · 19/05/2010 10:11

oops few too many ** there !

OrmRenewed · 19/05/2010 10:13

Hello.

I have now managed 2 runs of approx 3.5 miles each. Having to stop and walk sometimes though. Depressing to think this time last year I was contemplating half-marathon Feet still sore but not as bad - have new Saucony shoes that I had properly fitted at East Runner in Bristol. Still reeling from the cost

Taking it slow.

Wheelybug · 19/05/2010 10:16

Themasterandmargaritas · 19/05/2010 10:37

Wheely, i minced along avoiding all puddles.

Well done Orm, slowly back to it should help. I bought new runners online, just a more up to date version of the old ones, but will pop to Brizzol on my hols to get a 'proper' pair.

Goldberry · 19/05/2010 13:13

I second that reeling from the cost, OrmRenewed. Bought my Saucony shoes when I first started running about a year ago (rather extravagant as I didn't know if I would really stick with the running!) I have to say, though, the guy in the running shop must have known his stuff - they are unbelievably comfortable. Feels like I'm wearing slippers. They seem to be standing up to the pounding they get too - I'm no lightweight!

OrmRenewed · 19/05/2010 13:31

Yes agree they are good. I have tendonitis in both feet and really badly in the left - hence the halt to running for 4 months. When I am wearing these shoes I hardly feel it - doesn't stop it hurting after a few miles though. I've rarely spent more than that on a pair of 'real' shoes!

sfxmum · 19/05/2010 14:39

hello all

very active on here, good to hear injuries are healing albeit slowly

jajas second the proper running shop for proper running shoes, they will sell what is good for you not the most fancy/ expensive fashion shoe - do go out and run

here revising for an exam, slightly alarmed by time frame with half term hols slap bang in the middle of it doing short runs all week to keep energy up and snacking to minimum

happy running all

notyummy · 19/05/2010 15:40

Managed 8 miles today, but god it was hard! 1 hr 6 minutes....not a geeat time at all. I regularly do 7 miles, so I don't think it was the actual distance. I only had a small bowl of cereal for breakfast at 8 30, and so by the time I went running at noon I probably didn't have enough inside me. Add to this the fact that it felt much warmer than usual...and I struggled. In addition, yesterday I did some quite hard cardio at the gym for 50 mins (not running though) and Monday I did a hard circuits session and the cross trainer...perhaps my legs are going on strike?!

peachsmuggler · 19/05/2010 17:40

Am not surprised you found it hard notyummy with all that cross training!!! 1 hr 6 mins for 8 miles seems really fast to me, but you are very fast anyway, no?

Welcome jajas, don't have anything to add to the already mentioned advice, but good luck!

Good to see you Orm, you'll get there.

at master mincing around puddles.

Glad things are going well wheely!

I also started at a running club last night. It was really good. Very friendly and lots of different speeds/distances to join in with. Is kind of difficult though as is all very inspiring but not sure whether to join for a year as would like to get on with having a baby soonish. Will have a think.

TutTutter · 19/05/2010 17:45

themaster - how many of us have applied then?

TutTutter · 19/05/2010 17:46

yy - decent running shoes a MUST

not a single blister for me training for, or running, the marathon
