Our thread has got too big.

Iwill start this one with two things:

Positive vibes for the exciting developments on the MN Marathon Relay thread and

Early ballot for GNR 2010 - you know you want to:)

Hey highfibre - go easy on yourself, no point doing too much and setting your recovery back . Glad you enjoyed your run with your sister.

Was goling to run tonight but felt flipping knackered after giving blood yesterday so gave ot a miss, and going tomorrow.

Present government makes me want to hide under the duvet and eat M&Ms, so will need to self-motivate...

sfxmum · 12/05/2010 11:31

will someone kick me out the door please!

peachy go on you will need to be fit to go on all the marches and work extra hard until you are very old

sfxmum · 12/05/2010 11:32

well done mrsW and all other amazing results

peachsmuggler · 12/05/2010 13:10

Consider yourself kicked sfxmum

ha ha, I think you might be right!

Goldberry · 12/05/2010 13:22

Well done everybody, and thanks for your answers about X-training. Having been advised to do some by the instructor of my running group, I decided to go to a class. I chose body combat, which I used to go to donkeys years ago. I'm wondering whether body pump or even body balance might be better for core strength though.
Am loving running with a group - it seems to motivate me and make me push myself harder than I would on my own. Yesterday's task was hills. Ouch. Have never really done hills before, but I've signed myself up for the Blenheim 10k which is quite hilly apparently, so I'd better get used to it!

sanfairyann · 12/05/2010 21:10

ouch to hills - we live half way up one and I've just run up and down it 5 times - my legs are killing and I was gasping! way harder work than a run.

are you with a proper athletics/running group goldberry? I'm thinking about going to one near us to get me to run a bit faster. I'm essentially v lazy

peachsmuggler · 13/05/2010 08:29

Ahhhh now chant after me "I looooove hills"

Embrace the hills, they are yolur friends apparently.

Actually I do quite like hill training now, and it really does geet you fit fast.

Went out for 4 mile last night but ended up only doing 3 and that was a struggle. Really missing that pint of blood......

Goldberry · 13/05/2010 08:35

No, not really, sanfairyann. It's a beginners' running course organised by www.runinengland.co.uk . It's a 10 week course for anyone from total beginners to people like me who have done a bit of running but want to improve. The instructor is brilliant and has a different focus for each session (hills, intervals, etc.). I think the idea is that at least some of us will carry on running together after the 10 weeks are up. It's only £2 per session, and if you pay the full £20 you also get a runinengland water bottle and t-shirt. I found the website by chance. They have groups all over the country, and one of them happened to be in my village!

MoshiMoshi · 13/05/2010 10:16

Glad to see some hill training in progress. It is very effective for boosting fitness and speed apparently. I am in the middle of Born To Run by Christopher McWhatshisface and wondering about whether to ditch the Asics Gel Kayanos for something more neutral... After all I have refused to go down the orthotics route for the reason that I do not want to be reliant on man made supports to run as I think this means my body won't compensate for it's inadequacies, so why am I running in shoes for serious overpronators? Not sure about going barefoot but it may be a step in the right direction which I seriously need as I now have tendonitis in BOTH ankles. Bugger.

sfx - GO GO GO!

Am continuing to Bootcamp to supplement my running etc but would you believe that on weighing ourselves, DH has lost 10 lbs and I seem to have not lost a jot. I feel tighter but then maybe I am imagining things. I just need that last 10 lbs or so to go to get back to my racing weight!

liath · 13/05/2010 16:27

Moshi-moshi - I recently bought these babies www.purefootwear.co.uk/src/fivefingers/vibram-fivefingers-kso-shoe-prod21021/ which look as ridiculous as you'd expect. I'm going to do plenty walking in them first before trying running. It's an interesting book isn't it? I really enjoyed it.

Am doing no runs longer than 5km at the moment and lots of walk-runs as the physio said the absolute worst thing I could do would be to re-aggravate the tendonitis now it's nearly healed. Very dull. The only exciting thing that's happened in my running recently is when I fell off the treadmill at the gym .

MrsWednesday · 13/05/2010 21:11

Ouch Liath - did anyone see?! Hope nothing was damaged apart from pride

BOOT up the bum for you sfxmum - the hardest part is the first step out the door...

Peach, I was the same when I gave blood a couple of weeks ago, it took it out of me for a good few days. I read in Runner's World that you should treat the day after (at least) as a rest day.

No running for me this week, I'm still recovering from Sunday! Have made it to pilates today though which was nice for a good stretch.

Agree, hills definitely one of the quickest ways to increase fitness and stamina - it's bloody hard work though!

Twink · 13/05/2010 22:10

Hills, don't mention hills....

Actually hills are fab, they make you stronger, no really they do but having just had a 6 hour round trip to Exmoor plus a 4.5 hour bike ride with, oddly enough, one or two hills I'm heading off to a flat bed!

Apparently I've done nearly 5000 feet of climbing in 56 miles (except we did more cos we missed a turn ) but the good news is, I'd have made the cut-off time if it was race day The official stats say 52 hills in 56 miles..

SFX, have borrowed a size 10 boot on your behalf, get yourself out and tell us what you've done. xxx

Goldberry, that's great, especially if you can carry on with like-minded people. I love to run with a mixed bunch, as it's a great leveller, the only thing people have in common is their love of running so jobs and status are irrelevant - unlike in many aspects of life.

Moshi, Bootcamp sounds fab, did one here until domestic issues made it too tricky.

I was due to give blood today but have postponed it until after my big day; I once got a bollocking from a medic friend when she found out I'd given blood 4 weeks before doing London as although your blood volume returns to normal within 24-36 hours, its composition takes a lot longer to return to normal - fine in an ordinary person but not for regular hard exercisers. It's not just the red cells to consider, but also whites which fight disease and other bits and pieces too (she knows a lot about it, and I was taken aback by her strong reaction) I'm going to wait until 2 weeks after my race, especially as I've had a few low iron issues recently.

ilovemydogandMrBrown · 13/05/2010 22:19

Hello. So glad to have found this thread. Was recently press ganged recruited to run the Bristol Half Marathon for the Wallace and Gromit Appeal in aid of Children's Hospital.

The only run I do at the moment, is the school run , although have been going to the gym. Doing cross trainer which is soooo hard and managed about 3 kms yesterday evening on the treadmill.

Am aiming towards endurance at the moment, so am going to gym tomorrow and plan to do 5km, and increase every other day.

Any advice would be welcome

Twink · 14/05/2010 08:51

Welcome Doglover. Best advice I can give is that which was given to me when I started which is to build up slowly

It's very easy to get carried away with enthusiasm, overdo it and end up further back than you started, carrying an injury. To avoid that, aim to build your mileage very gradually, only increase your longest run each week by 10% at a time and your overall weekly mileage by 10%. This gives you body time to adapt to the new demands being put upon it.

Good luck, and enjoy!

sfxmum · 14/05/2010 10:31

thanks ladies have actually been going out for short 3 mmile runs thanks

have plan now to run concurrent to my revision plan that should work

liath ouch on comedy fall, hope recovery goes well despite dullness

iloveMD&MrB welcome, when is the race? enjoy training and take it easy

twink when is the race? think you are officially hard core now

regarding cross training I have lapsed on my Pilates and feel it, also need to really get on bike, and hill I think I will start with the 'hill' at Richmond Park they are high enough for me atm

reminder to give blood thanks must book it

happy running all

Wheelybug · 14/05/2010 12:10

popping in on my phone as aol havming issues

Ilovrmydog - have a look at the bupa training plans. Probably best to have something to follow so you don't overdo it. Or I think may zest magazine had a beginner half maraton plan.

Good luck.

7k on treadmill today, 6 Tuesday. Aiming for longer outside on sunday.

Snigger at liath. Still waiting for that to happen to me.

Going before typos get worse.......

ilovemydogandMrBrown · 14/05/2010 12:46

Thanks! Brilliant advice

It's the Bristol Half Marathon 5th of September

MrsWednesday · 14/05/2010 13:41

Loads of time Ilove

Is there any chance you could sign up for a shorter one (10k?) before you do the half? Then you'll have a feel for what a race day is like. Would also recommend varying routes, doing hills, different speeds etc, rather than just doing lots of miles.

Twink, do you find that the more exercise you do the lower your iron levels drop? It's something I've noticed with me before - was borderline this time too but they let me do it anyway. Interesting about the recovery time, will bear that in mind next time.

Wheelybug · 14/05/2010 14:11

My bro is doing the bristol half Ilove - he was trying to persuade dh to do it with him but he's decided against.

popsycal · 15/05/2010 16:17

Struggling to keep up with everyone's running on the thre3ad - apologies!

Just popping in to report a pain free 4 miles at a reasonable pace - around 37 minutes. Am hoping I have turned a corner and am pondering a 10k race in mid July...

OP posts:
azazello · 16/05/2010 15:08

Hi all. I've been doing the NY couch to 5k (inspired by the relay marathon back in March) - Thanks Popsycal. I had done no running since school and hated it then.

Today I ran 10k in 60 mins and 20 secs. Am so chuffed. I actually ran all the way and am loving it! Planning to do another 10k run next month and pondering the Great South run in October. Is that too ambitious?

Themasterandmargaritas · 16/05/2010 20:27

It seems like the running is really picking up here.

I had to take a week off while I had a rotten chest cold and it is just so muddy here that it's difficult.

Did 4 miles on the treadmill and half an hour cross training. I'll go out tomorrow somehow.

My tough half marathon is in 6 weeks. Eeek.

Azzallo sounds great, you should be fine for October.

sanfairyann · 16/05/2010 22:31

great running everyone. thanks for the info about the running clubs goldberry there's one just round the corner from me so I'm checking it out tomorrow evening - hopefully group running will get me going a bit quicker. I am naturally a lazy blob.
did some running on saturday - got another 10k race coming up and want to break the hour limit - was just under 2 mins off last time. must go faster, must go faster

notyummy · 17/05/2010 09:37

Haven't managed to post much this week. Did a 7 miler last Tuesday (about 55 minutes I think), and then an hour of pilates followed by a quick 2 1/2 miles on Friday. Did 5 miles on Saturday, although was away and missing my ipod, so not very fast! Managed 40 minutes of Yoga yesterday and intend to do some circuit training tonight.

peachsmuggler · 17/05/2010 18:02

Another vote for building up slowly Ilove as you don't want to get injured. Was going to refer to you as doglove, but that is ALL wrong!

Sounds like you are going great guns azazello, and as above, if you build up slowly there's no reason you can't do the Great South in October.

Good luck at your running club tonight sanfairyann let us know how it goes! I am going to a new running club tomorrow night, which is supposed to be very friendly but am glad I am going with someone I know!

errrr, that sounds like a fair amount notyummy

I haven't run since last Wednesday's post-blood letting disaster, so am hoping I will not show myself up tomorrow night!

Getting hot this week, where we are, so we'll see how it goes. How I DO hate running in the heat!
