Our thread has got too big.

Iwill start this one with two things:

Positive vibes for the exciting developments on the MN Marathon Relay thread and

Early ballot for GNR 2010 - you know you want to:)

fishie - In the week I do a mixture of hockey, pilates, horse riding (less now, maybe once every few weeks I am doing pilates though), cycling and running. I am also currently going to Bootcamp 3/4 times a week in a bid to stop me running too much too soon after my month off with injuries but I must admit that it doesn't appear to be working as my hamstring is pulling. Ideally I would run every day if my body was up to it. I yearn for the days when I did 45/50 miles a week!! However, I am failing miserably to get over the injuries and think it probably doesn't help that I run everywhere and in the interval circuits I get really competitive and cannot help going for it. Arrrrrgggghhhhh!

i needto find my running mojo again

Moshi, have you every thought you might be doing too much?

Popsy, give it time, nurture it gently and it will come back. If it's week before AF then your mojo has just taken a short holiday.

16k for me today. I loved it, though I do feel pretty damn wrecked now.

hello

one question please - it has been a while since I pushed myself to anything above very light pace as a consequence I have been getting slower
so when you run and keep a good pace just how tired do you feel at the end? I vaguely recall occasionally getting to the point when hands go on hips and there is a definite 'I am catching my breath' moment
am going out for a run in the morning with someone faster than me

sfxmum · 30/04/2010 21:47

haven't been to Pilates in a while might try to get back to Thursday classes and maybe throw in a Step class

notyummy · 30/04/2010 22:19

sfxmum - During a run there is no way I hold a conversation or do anything other than 'yes' or 'no' without ruining my breathing. At the end (when I usually push myself) I quite often get a 'ringing in the ears' sensation and can hear myself breathing really loudly and unevenly.

sfxmum · 30/04/2010 22:34

thanks notyummy I have been really lazy and often just chat with a friend as I jog along will push self harder tomorrow

MoshiMoshi · 30/04/2010 22:54

Note to London marathon wanabees: log on first thing on Tuesday to apply for a place in the ballot...

MoshiMoshi · 30/04/2010 23:42

My conversation pace (easy) is where I am able to hold a conversation with a breath in between a sentence. My tempo pace is not really a speaking easily pace although I can chat but it is not really worth it due to pauses. My fast pace no way. I find it difficult going gently as I tend to rush around everywhere hence my injuries probably!

sfx - have you thought of using a HRM to judge it for you if you find it difficult to gauge yourself?

peachsmuggler · 01/05/2010 00:39

Ahh now sfxmum have been thinking something similar. I am not very good at pushing myself and so happily run in my comfort zone. Like you, it would probably help if I ran with someone faster but I am too scared most of the time. I think that after a childhood of being overweight and not able to do anything sportswise, I am terrified of getting out of breath as it will prove I am rubbish, and so I just don't try hard enough

Am making concerted effort not to be so scared and to try to achieve something even if I fail.

I get really disheartened by the whole speed thing, especially when I have been running for ages and am doing lots of work training towards 25min 5k which I will be literally killing myself to achieve and then hear ghat BIL, who has been running for a matter of weeks had done his first 5k in 23 mins. Hurumph

In summary, I feel your pain.

moshi, I like "loose" the baby weight. Suggests the casting off of burdens!

sfxmum · 01/05/2010 09:21

moshi I have 2 HRM (gifts)but don't know how to use it I probably should read the instructions and set it properly
I used it a few times and it seemed to show that the heart rate was too high even if I wasn't going fast or feeling unwell at all and I have my blood pressure checked and it is on the lower range of normal, not bad for 41

peachy very similar feelings to many on many counts but I did used to push myself much harder it is in the last few years that somehow I have gone all nervy and silly

anyway will send dd out with friends and then go running with dh he is under orders not to go easy on me

HighFibreDiet · 01/05/2010 15:50

sfxmum dp bought me a HRM for Xmas and I use it on every run. But I often have to adjust the 'zone' by changing the low or high limits, otherwise it beeps at me the whole time. I did have to concentrate on the instructions at first to make sure I was setting it properly!

p.s. hello there, used to be mummypig and took part in the Run for Macmillan but haven't been on this thread much. Had an op recently so went for my first run in a while yesterday - 30 mins steady, which felt pretty good .

MoshiMoshi · 01/05/2010 17:43

Hello highfibrediet and welcome back. Glad to hear your run went well. Do you think you could train without the HRM? I have always run by feel just using a watch to monitor pace and distance. I am not sure if the HRM is for me although I used to do an interval session in the gym using HRMs and it occurred to me that it was a much more proven way of improving VO2 uptake. Then again I worry that left to my own devices using too much technology could leave me obsessing about it and not relaxing enough on runs. I struggle with the functions on my watch as it is . Funnily enough, Runners World this month has an article on the relative merits of using a HRM against "feel"...

fishie · 02/05/2010 10:00

peach i hate doing speed work and am just getting over injury so don't do it as much as i might. i find the best way is just to go for it on the last kilometre of a medium-length or shorter run. then you can die quietly at home or stop and walk if needed.

sfxmum · 02/05/2010 10:48

hello

LOL at dying quietly at home

thanks for all the HRM info, have now been looking more closely so might work

went for 10k run with dh yesterday, the first half was speedier than usual then we made the mistake of exchanging some words and ended up chatting for most of the second half, still 1hr and 15mins was ok, too wet today

sfxmum · 02/05/2010 10:50

also can't find the comment on headache after a run, the only time I get those is when I forget to eat something sensible before and especially after the run, including top up fluids

HighFibreDiet · 02/05/2010 12:27

Glad your run went well sfxmum, 1hr and 15mins is a longer run than I have managed for a very long time.

I used to get headaches a lot after exercise but I have started making myself home-made 'isotonic' drinks (half water, half orange juice and a pinch of salt) and I think they make a huge difference to headaches. Or I buy a bag of crisps to eat with my post-run drink! I seem to remember reading that salt loss (in sweat) varies so much between runners that you don't really know unless you have it measured, but this seems to help me.

In answer to MoshiMoshi's question I can run without a HRM, but I tend to run for a set time rather than a set distance so I like the HRM for checking my effort levels.

about to create a new thread about trisuits so any triathletes out there please give me your opinions

thx

notyummy · 02/05/2010 16:43

Managed a 7 miler this morning - 55/6 minutes I think so OK in this wind! Hope you can all get out this weekend.

peachsmuggler · 02/05/2010 17:33

Great time notyummy!

I went out too. Weather kind of hideous, but would rather run today and then play in park with DD tomorrow when it supposedly will be nicer!

Did 5k in just over 25 mins on route I am doing my race next Sunday so am pleased as want to do a sub 25min race.

ha ha fishie that is not a bad idea!

Well done sfxmum. Wasn't your DH supposed to be kicking you into touch, not chatting!!! Sounds nice though!

Welcome back highfibre. Am intrigued by your home made drink! I used lucozade sport on long runs for a while but then realised it was making me feel like puking afterwards so stopped. Was thinking of experimenting with different brand but maybe I will try your recipe!

notyummy · 02/05/2010 17:53

Well done peach - on the day you may be faster as distracted by the atmosphere/chasing other people can have that effect. The only problem is other people getting in your way and having to weave around to get through them - that can cost time, no?

Good luck!

Themasterandmargaritas · 02/05/2010 19:01

Well done Peachy and notyummy.

It was me going on about headaches. I normally run after breakfast and am trying to take ORT afterwards too. I sweat A LOT. Perhaps I should also eat something straight away afterwards too?

peachsmuggler · 02/05/2010 20:51

Yes notyummy, slightly worried about weaving but will do my best!

What's ORT master?

Themasterandmargaritas · 03/05/2010 08:41

Should have said ORS oral rehydration salts, blame it on the world's largest hangover.

6 miles today on the treadmill, in 54 minutes. I think I need to push myself a bit harder next time.
