Our thread has got too big.

Iwill start this one with two things:

Positive vibes for the exciting developments on the MN Marathon Relay thread and

Early ballot for GNR 2010 - you know you want to:)

soyabean · 03/05/2010 11:14

Hello everyone
I don't seem to be very good at MN - when i get online I scan a few threads but never seem to get round to actually posting.. I like this one though and would like to try and keep on it, with you all! Am trying again!

Am v impressed by all your speeds and runs and other exercise too.

Am doing a 10k with a small group from work in July and might do a local one next week to see how I get on. I have built up my endurance so I can run 10k now but dont seem to be able to speed up... So that is my next challenge.

Last time I posted I had bought new running shoes. They are no longer clean, I am glad to report, got over that one! I have to say I am not entirely convinced, they feel comfy but my feet are sometimes a bit tingly feeling which doesnt seem right.

Anyway, happy running to all.

popsy do you think you have the iliotibial band thing? i have. in me is because i don't have time for other exercise and so my swimming muscles have gone. pilates will fix me.

soyabean re tingly toes, try lacing shoes a little looser on instep, there is a nerve there. and take much time with putting socks on, make sure toes have room to expand. i always get that with new shoes too, but once it was so bad i was given a refund.

oh wasn't that weather horrid. i saintily went yesterday and today.

Themasterandmargaritas · 04/05/2010 05:46

soya me too I had the same with the new shoes for quite some time until it loosened a bit.

I'm with fishie popsy, pilates really helped with my knee and overall stretching, it might be worth a try.

SOOOOOO who has entered? I did it, but I am in overseas ballot so presumably there are less places for us. C'mon the rest of you, don't leave me on my own.....

sfxmum · 04/05/2010 08:42

hello quick note about illiotibial stuff I had it last year and many people including Twink and my local running shop gave me great advice will post later as school run time now but stretching properly as well as doing at least 1 or 2 sets of squats a day helps, apart from the usual remedies when painful ICE

popsycal · 04/05/2010 10:22

dh seems to have entered the marathon for me at midnight.....

I will definitely defer for a year should i get a place though

OP posts:
popsycal · 04/05/2010 10:23

here lots of exercises and advice on strengthening quads

here

and here

have a nice little books too called Treat your own knees

hope some of it helps

HighFibreDiet · 04/05/2010 11:24

i had itb problems after ds3 was born and went to see a physio, for that and for terrible pelvic floor muscles. She gave me exercises to do 3x each day and as long as I was diligent it really made a difference. Haven't clicked on sfxmum's links but probably v similar stuff.

Didn't realise swimming and Pilates helped with itb as well, have been swimming lots recently and will start to do Pilates again in eves as it's the only thing that tones up my wobbly belly.

Went for a 30 min run today - 2nd run since my op - felt pretty good, put in a bit more effort than last time, only went a little dodgy when I tried to do 'race pace' for the last 5 mins and my right quads started twinging so I had to slow right down to an easy pace for the end. But overall feel good about it. My sister is coming to stay this weekend so I'm going to run with her on Sunday which will be interesting as I think she's usually faster than me.

Wheelybug · 04/05/2010 13:51

Hi All.

Great running everyone and well done on entering the marathon ballot M&M and Popsy ! I considered it, with a view to deferring a year....

Some more running here - 3x last week at 5K. Fairly gently too to try and get my calf sorted. In fact at the weekend we were at my parents so I went out running with my mum ! She's 66 and vaguely started couch to 5K last yr but not finished it. Anyway we got into quite a good rhythm where I'd run ahead then run back to her then run on a bit more. 6K in the gym this morning at a faster pace than usual and calf seems to be holdin up ok. I can still feel it twinge a bit but am crossing my fingers.

peachsmuggler · 04/05/2010 15:37

Good luck Marathon balloters! When do they draw it?

Wheely am very impressed with your mum!

Nice one highfibre - watch out for running too fast with your sister though!

Am talking myself in and out of going running tonight, as am tired and it is cold, but really should given the enormous chocolate cupcake I have just eaten

MoshiMoshi · 04/05/2010 17:05

I did it although will be amazed if I get a place in the ballot. I may try for a golden bond place with the British Heart Foundation if I fail as I am quite keen to do it after having to drop out in 2002 after all my training. I tore my anterior cruciate ligament skiing .

I too have a twinge from the ITB (left). I have also suffered from ITBFS (illiotibial band friction syndrome) in the past when training for the marathon in 2002. I upped the pace too soon and reaped the consequences. ITB strain is often caused by overloading a weakness or overtraining, basically too much or too fast too soon. Interestingly, I read in Runners World that gait can help (or not as the case may be) too and to try running as if running with each foot either side of a central line for a month to see if that helps. Have been experimenting and feeling a bit like John Wayne in the process although I don't think it looks as bad as if feels (am also swinging arms more in bid to eliminate tendonitis etc as advised by physio) and can actually feel the benefit.

Which confirms to me that my ITB is affected partially by my gait (I overpronate A LOT) and exacerbated by muscle weaknesses as I am still weedy after my 4 pregnancies, but my head thinks I can still hammer out 6.30 min miles (HA HA HA!)

Anything that focuses on your core, your overall balance and posture like pilates or horse riding, or that works your body symmetrically like swimming, I think can only be of benefit therefore.

Went for buggy-free 4 miler today at a very gentle 10 min/mile pace. Mantra is "ease in gently and work on speed later"! Slight twinge to ITB and pull on ankle from tendonitis. More worryingly is the hamstring pull which practically renders me incapable of getting out of bed in the morning...

Wheelybug · 04/05/2010 20:25

Oh dear - I've just got carried away with all your enthusiasm and entered the ballot. Would definitely defer though.

dandycandyjellybean · 04/05/2010 21:31

Sorry haven't read whole thread but have just signed up for 5k race forlife in june. Kinow that's a bit softy softy for this thread you all seem so fit and long distance!!!!! Am not total couch pot so started training at week 4. It is going well and i am LOVING running, did it way back in the teenage yrs and am remembering why!!!! love those endorphins. Am about 4 stone overweight, but quite fit coz i have been a gym bunny for about 7 yrs but like me g&t's and all the crisps/olives/cheese that go with them. But am trying to be sensible with myself and reason that all this hard work should count for something.....

soyabean · 04/05/2010 21:54

Thanks Fishie and Master - that is reassuring. I will be careful with laces and socks.
Good luck sexbombbikerchick! Sounds like a good start!
have a good week everyone.

fishie · 04/05/2010 22:10

gasp my little toenail has come off! well only half of it. what shall i do? do i cut it off and varnish the absence? it was when i was walking too.

itb fellow sufferers, i am trying to sit with legs widened as it is my hips i think. not one for the office.

Themasterandmargaritas · 05/05/2010 08:21

at fishie and welcome chick, we'll soon have you doing a half marathon.

Hooray for all the ballot entries!

Feeling a little low today, 3 years ago a Kenya Airways plane crashed straight out of Douala (Cameroon) airport losing all passengers aboard. We lost three friends, one a couple leaving a wee girl at boarding school in England. My gorgeous ds2 arrived a week later. I can't stop thinking about them. So I went for a 10k run for them and thought a lot about you Twink and you Moshi, stay strong.

MoshiMoshi · 05/05/2010 08:50

fishie - was it bruised which is why it has come off? If so the rest will almost certainly come off too. Shouldn't hurt but no toenails does leave your toe feeling very odd.

MoshiMoshi · 05/05/2010 08:57

master - what a sad story. You must think of your friends often which is a nice tribute to them. Thank you for the thought for me too. Had a really low moment out of the blue at the weekend which hit me like a lightning bolt. I think this must be to be expected from now on.

The Moshi household is full of lurgy and I woke with a sore throat and spaced out head . No training for me today sadly.

Welcome, bikerchick!

sfxmum · 05/05/2010 10:54
