Our thread has got too big.

Iwill start this one with two things:

Positive vibes for the exciting developments on the MN Marathon Relay thread and

Early ballot for GNR 2010 - you know you want to:)

Thanks for the support. Much appreciated. Good your running is back on track wheely and peach and going strong master. Not sure what is up, popsy, but I second the consensus that you should stick around. This is pretty much the only place I drop into on MN to stay in touch with you, my running friends .

Happy running ladies!

PS Message to Twink: I hope training is going well. You can do it! Keep us posted with news when you can as i am sure we are all interested.

peachsmuggler · 21/04/2010 08:45

Hey Tut, are you about. Just wondering if you are get set go for this Sunday? If so, best of luck!!!

Themasterandmargaritas · 21/04/2010 11:18

Yes Tut, wishing you the best of British.

TutTutter · 21/04/2010 11:57

hi ladies

yup, 4 days to go and am feeling GOOD

nervous, however, about the weather forecast - atm the bbc forecast predicts sun and 20 degrees

if it's really that warm on the day i think i'll have to revise my expectations of time, and focus on making it round safely

Themasterandmargaritas · 21/04/2010 17:21

We shall be rooting for you Tut. You are hoping for 4 hours if my memory serves me correctly....

In my experience of running in the heat, obviously you need to take lots of water on board drink wise, but dowse yourself liberally over the head with the sponges they give you, the last half I did in Tanzania even had a huge cold shower for us to run under.

Wheelybug · 21/04/2010 18:08

Good luck Tutter !

MrsWednesday · 21/04/2010 22:23

All the very best of luck Tutter. I am impressed (and jealous!).

Hope Twink and mini-Twink are doing ok.

Hat, how are you feeling? Hope there is an improvement very soon.

Moshi, how frustrating and sad for you and your mum.

Popsy, hope your injury improves soon.

Peach, do you have a fancy runner's watch to set yourself km targets so you can hit your PB? Seems like you are pretty close to it already and it is easier to run faster in a race.

I am back in my running groove now, it's taken ages! Only managing one long run on a Sunday and a shorter one in the week, plus pilates on a Saturday - that is just about all my old bones can cope with but it seems to be enough to keep my fitness levels.

Apart from Tutter and Peach, has anyone got races coming up? I've signed up for the Leeds half marathon on 9th May, then I need to find another one to do this year to keep me focused. Promised myself I'd do a marathon before I'm 40 - with only a year to go I'd would welcome suggestions for a good one that I can get a place on (tried and failed to get in to London this year).

sfxmum · 22/04/2010 10:22

Good luck Tutter enjoy yourself

MoshiMoshi · 22/04/2010 15:27

Good luck, Tut! wishing you a great race and try stay cool as it is forecast to be warm this weekend.

QueenofDreams · 22/04/2010 15:34

Hi everyone, I was wondering if I could ask a bit of advice on here about running?
I'm very unfit, just quit smoking and I'm just wondering what's the best way to get started?

Wheelybug · 22/04/2010 18:43

Welcome back MrsW.

Queenofdreams - I cannot recommend couch to 5K highly enough - got me running and then back to it after pregnancy (also lots of friends who claimed they couldn't run have done it since me including my 65 year old mother !!). There's podcasts to help you along which tell you when to change from running to walking. Otherwise there are other good programmes around. Mostly they start with something like running for a minute, walking for 90 second and work up from that.

plan

podcasts

Good luck !

sfxmum · 23/04/2010 11:03

QofD I would second what Wheely said and welcome

hoping to go for a longer (for me) run at the weekend 6-8 miles

can I ask about tempo sessions please what works best for you? am thinking of starting some on my own, maybe with 100/200 yr burst at intervals then extend them, does that sound ok?

OrmRenewed · 23/04/2010 11:08

All the best all you marathoners.

I am still grounded Can't get this tendonitis sorted out.

QueenofDreams · 23/04/2010 11:22

Thanks ladies I've bought some new trainers, so I think I'm going to start tomorrow

sfxmum · 23/04/2010 11:51

yes go for it dh started running in January and already did a 10K race now thoroughly addicted

Orm sorry about tendonitis

popsycal · 24/04/2010 11:43

good luck to marathon people

I have running to report

just 1.8miles but in 15 mins and with minimal twinges from my leg so I am pleased

Going to do the same distance until I can do it without pain then start increasing again

MoshiMoshi · 24/04/2010 18:47

Good luck marathoners! Am very envious of you all...

Hurray you are running popsy! After a month off I have Bootcamped, Pilated and run this past week and am now raring to go but trying to only do something on alternate days to give my body time to get back in the swing of things.

Any news from Twink anyone? I hope she is ok and it is rl that is keeping her too busy to update us.

peachsmuggler · 24/04/2010 22:18

Glad you're back out there popsy sfxmum - bursts sounds kind of fast, I think tempo runs should be about race pace or a little faster I think.

I normally do something like the following. If I usually run 6 miles at 10 min mile pace then for tempo run I would run 4 miles at 9 min mile pace. Alternativley I might run 3 miles doing the the first and last mile at 8.5 min miles but try to do the middle mile at 8 min mile.

Does that make sense?

Oh and good luck again tut, though am sure you're in bed by now!

saggarmakersbottomknocker · 25/04/2010 11:13

Good luck today Tutter.

Are any other MNers running?

notyummy · 25/04/2010 11:23

I haven't been on this thread for AGES! About to go out for a 7 miler. Feeling very inspired by watching the marathon. Hope all the mumsnetters running do ok!

Watching the frontrunners at the mo, and as always am AMAZED at the pace they can maintain for 26 miles - I am sure these people literally have a different anatomy to me I can manage a sub 50 minute 10k, but they maintain my 'sprint' speed for the whole bloody way!!

badgermonkey · 25/04/2010 11:27

That's exactly how I feel, notyummy! After dragging my way through an 8-miler this morning at an exceedingly slow pace (not helped by keeping stopping to sort out shoelaces/headphones/taking jacket off etc) I can't believe how fast they're still going in the last mile. I did a sub-50 10k too and I thought that was fast!

Themasterandmargaritas · 25/04/2010 19:36

Those African elite runners are built differently to us. They have incredible lung capacity and long long skinny legs. When they run past you you see them up close they they are all legs. It's the altitude....

I wonder how Tut has got on.

notyummy · 25/04/2010 19:38

Did 8 miles in 1 hour and 1 minute in the end, which is fast for me!

Watching the marathon was obviously inspiring. Maybe my big bowl of porridge helped as well....

popsycal · 25/04/2010 20:54

waiting for tutter too.....

and joining master in sub 50 min 19k envy
