Our thread has got too big.

Iwill start this one with two things:

Positive vibes for the exciting developments on the MN Marathon Relay thread and

Early ballot for GNR 2010 - you know you want to:)

OP posts:

thanks for the montane tip - just been looking at their website and it looks good (and much more reasonable than North Face, though that's not hard).

the thing I don;t really understand is whether somtheing like this - which looks great - would actually protect you and keep you warm if you did your ankle in and had to wait for mountain rescue? (in snowy/freezing conditions). it's the fear of the ankle/mr scenario that keeps me taking my thick fleece with me, as well as my kagoole.

I strongly suspect that my real fear is not, actually, hypothermia, it's looking like an ill-prepared idiot. I can picture the headlines in the local paper (which does a eekly round up of mountain rescue activity) "local idiot woman carried off hills by strong, sensible, men who Know What They Are Doing....She has been banned from venturing out of her village again."

hatwoman · 08/03/2010 12:48

eekly?

OrmRenewed · 08/03/2010 12:52

Orm's been bad

Started a low-carb diet to shift the unsightly saddle bags round my once-svelte hips! And it's drained me of energy as usual. Did a few shortish runs last week and then 9 miles on Saturday (but a lot of it was walking ). I will just keep at the running but take it at my pace until I start to feel better. Ahem...I think someone said we could walk bits of our route didn't they?

Merle · 08/03/2010 17:06

Hat that's exactly what I was talking about- they even have the apple in the picture to illustrate.

I don't think they'd be any use if you stood/sat still for very long. I've had mine on in winter and rested for a few minutes and it is surprising how quickly you lose body heat. The thing is that on hill races everyone seems to have teeny tiny bumbags, so noone else can carry much more than the minimum.

I think the only thing to do is to run in pairs, until you feel very confident of the route/weather etc.

I used to smile at the mountain rescue reports, (how on earth do people get themselves in these fixes?) then my then 9-year old managed to wander off during a short walk in the Lakes!

peachsmuggler · 08/03/2010 20:11

Hey Orm, hope things improve soon.

Tut - wow, your 20 mile time is awesome, what are you aiming for in the London Marathon?

No running here due to hideious cold. Am going to try 4 miles tomorrow. Have run once in last 2 weeks

SixtyFootDoll · 09/03/2010 19:28

I did 3 miles today in my lunch hour, it was hard work, I have a cold and I couldnt pace my breathing.
The most i have run is 10k would like to do a half marathon in a few months, maybe the Cardiff half.

TutTutter · 10/03/2010 09:10

have torn a calf muscle and been told not to run

seeing a physio for ultrasound therapy later today

only 6 weeks til the marathon - have no idea yet whether i'll be able to run it or not

gutted

Themasterandmargaritas · 10/03/2010 15:22

Tut, that is dreadful. I hope the physio can sort it pretty quickly.

peachsmuggler · 10/03/2010 15:51

oh Tut that's rotten news. Really hope it improves in time.

SixtyFootDoll · 10/03/2010 17:49

Oh no Tut that is so frustrating for you I how all that hard work wont go to waste.

sanfairyann · 10/03/2010 21:01

[sa] tut

Twink · 10/03/2010 23:00

Oh are Tut*, hope the physio has a magic wand, or at least magic strapping...

sfxmum · 11/03/2010 11:30

hello all

Tutter I am so sorry hope you are on the mend soon

Orm how are you feeling? hope you are on the mend

hope everyone else is ok sorry for lack on individual comment barely had time to catch up with the thread

so a little over a week to go for the relay on the plus side I know I can do 10K but the downside is it takes me over an hr

happy running and recovery

fishie · 11/03/2010 11:39

tutter so sorry, hopefully will be ok. at least the bulk of your training is done...

i am still bloody ill, no run for 5 weeks now. hopefully will be better for 28th but atm can't even climb stairs without panting like an asthmatic pug.

MoshiMoshi · 12/03/2010 13:08

Hello hello. Sorry to hear marathon may be jeopardised by injury, Tut. sending repair quickly vibes to you. Hope all well with tri training, Twink. get that bilateral breathing sorted and the swimming will be much easier! Well done, Master on you run. Great dedication in getting there. How was Moshi?!

Knee deep in multi-children christenings (last Sunday), 5th and 7th birthday parties (this and following weekend) and memorial service planning. Managing to keep hockey training and match playing going and feeling like it is coming back to me! Running is very limited, mainly because of busy schedule. I am also keen to avoid injury and went to a clinic who said buggy running has messed up my stride so I am overstriding and not using my arms which is causing the tendinitis and ITBFS (it is threatening to strike I fear). So not sure how to run as much as I would like without the buggy but am bearing this all in mind. Pilates is still going strong and cannot recommend it highly enough! Happy running one and all.

TutTutter · 14/03/2010 21:14

ah, thanks for all your good wishes

good news ackshewerly. physio #1 did some massage (omfg - i wanted gas and air - that HURT) and referred me to physio #2 for ultrasound

physio #2 said tear not too bad and i'd be ok to run - albeit tentatively. LOTS of stretching advised

so, ran the next day, a short-ish one. a bit twingey but not too bad

set off yesterday to see how it went and it was great. only a mild achey/stiffness. managed just shy of 13 miles

SO pleased - means i can take part in the reading half-marathon next week, and have only missed a week of VLM training

sanfairyann · 14/03/2010 21:47

great news tut moshi how weird about the buggy running causing problems - will tell a mate of mine who does a lot of running training that way.
have just booked 2 different 10k runs as practice for the GNR. think it's going to take me over an hour though - is that ok or wil I be hopelessly embarrassed?

sfxmum · 14/03/2010 21:54

good news tutter

sanfairyann if they don't demand a PB to be able to take part you should be fine, these days it takes me just over an hr
enjoy

glad the sun was out this weekend only managed a couple of 5k at leisurely, am enjoying the view, pace it was lovely, but everyone and their cousin seemed to be out running/ jogging

sanfairyann · 14/03/2010 22:21

lol yeah they're all out here now too. had a good run through the park this weekend. upset dh though by letting on I always give the other (invariably male) runners a cheeky smile when we pass. dh finds this far too flirty. aibu?

Themasterandmargaritas · 15/03/2010 09:48

Excellent news Tut, I saw another VLM-er start a thread over the weekend, did you find her?

San, you will probably go faster on the day.

It's funny you should talk about passing-other-runners etiquette as I was just contemplating the same this morning as I was out. Do you nod/say hello/ ignore those you see going in the opposite direction, what happens when you are overtaking? I reckon a knackered flirty smile is a must if he is a cute guy, just don't then trip over a rock and go arse over tit, because then you'd look like a right eejit.

I don't run past very many other runners but always say a polite 'morning'. Needless to say I run pass a variety of kenyans going about their business, many of whom offer me words of encouragement. I must give the impression of suffering.

Fishie, I hope you are feeling better this week.

Wheelybug · 15/03/2010 12:28

Oh phew tutter - fingers crossed and good luck fro reading half. My bro is doing that too.

No running here - wasn't well last week and we are off skiing on saturday so I don't ant to risk any strains or anything so I'll be back to it when we return. Not sure I'll manage 10K for 27th - probably mroe like 5 miles.

fishie · 15/03/2010 15:25

oh good tutter.

it is so lovely and springlike out there.

i managed one little half hour walk / run yesterday. is ok so long as i don't get out of breath...

i will have a go at 6k on wednesday but i really can't tell if i am feeble from inactivity or still not recovered. last run before got ill was 10miles!

peachsmuggler · 15/03/2010 16:57

Great news Tut

I don't really acknowledge other runners as live in London and they would probably report me to police for being friendly

Did 10 miles yesterday which is by far the longest I have done in 3 months, but then, only 2 weeks till MN marathon and have promised to do 15 miles eek.

Feel fine today, though flipping ravenous. Needless to say am embracing this and shovelling food down like there is no tomorrow!

Gorgeous gorgeous weather too!

fishie · 16/03/2010 09:38

i am in london too but am very strict and always say good morning / afternoon even if they are stern men pretending i am not there.

sfxmum · 16/03/2010 17:57

am in London too and as far as acknowledging other runners it depends on the hour and day of the week, early morning everybody seems to at least nod, then there is 'the mummy hr' after drop off which generally means more smiles, at weekends it is mostly looks of solidarity of having to put up with slow walkers taking up the entire towpath

running tomorrow I hope
