Our thread has got too big.

Iwill start this one with two things:

Positive vibes for the exciting developments on the MN Marathon Relay thread and

Early ballot for GNR 2010 - you know you want to:)

I have running to report

9 miles!!! How did that happen!! (whispers in 1 hour 25 mins) - the last 5k absolutely killed me - my pace was horrifically slow during that part/

Not sure it was sensible though given my recently track (get the pun) record. My hip started to hurt and so did my knees after 7 miles. I really think I need new trainers but really really can't afford any

anyway
I ran

hi all, do you mind if I hijack quickly, and ask if any of you have done the hell run in the south, and if you think it's possible to go from no running to 10-12 mile sin 8 months (have started a thread off as well). used to be able to run quite well but my legs are not as good as they were - still fancy it thou. thanks.

Wheelybug · 21/02/2010 19:32

Well done POpsyy !! I got out too, not having been out since monday and DH had to make me as I couldn't really be bothered. But glad I did. Only did 5K as soooooo tired. Bit of a shame as this week should have been the culmination of my 10K plan but haven't got out due to DD2 being ill. So, I will re-do it next week.

TheSouth - Don't know that run but I think 8 months would be long enough if you have the time to put the training in ! Good luck !

thesouthsbelle · 22/02/2010 07:58

ok what are we thinking wheely? I currently do twice a week inly at combat, I have a route I can do which is approx 3 miles.

how often do you change your sports bras? (i've had mine for the last 2 years and well in combat i'm a bit bouncy

Themasterandmargaritas · 23/02/2010 05:45

Good for you Popsy .

I managed a shocking 12k yesterday but AF arrived today thank goodness as I was starting to worry about the wisdom of running my half on Sunday. I just can't run at all in the days before AF comes.

Soya, sorry to hear you are having a tough time. But I am giggling at all the pristine trainers out there.

My housekeeper gave mine a huge wash once, with my nike thingy in and I was furious, poor thing won't go anywhere near them now.

TheSouth, I can't comment on sports bra as I am probably the only person in the world who has to wear a wonderbra when running.

sfxmum · 23/02/2010 12:51

hello all

about bras thesouth I change mine at least once a year or when I can fasten to the inner most hook that usually means it has enough stretch and not enough support
just got the new shock absorber for running but not able to put it on by myself

anyway no running as we are still on half term (last day) dh working long hrs including weekend so going slightly bonkers

well done to those who have managed to overcome inertia

JJ · 23/02/2010 13:20

I am going to be really rude and pop in to brag that I did my first 10 mile run ever. I am shattered, though, and have a couple of blisters on my inner thighs, sob.

Does anyone have iliotibial band problems? Mine gets really hard and tight - I've ordered a roller thing. Do they help?

I'm always impressed by everyone here. Fishie, I looked into doing the Newham 10k since it's near me (am in Hackney) but am going to be out of town.

fishie · 23/02/2010 13:31

well done jj! i am still ill so even walking is a bit of a distant dream.

tmam what is this wonderbra you are running in?

OrmRenewed · 23/02/2010 13:34

This week I am mostly producing snot

I am never going to manage 21k by 27th March at this rate

fishie · 23/02/2010 17:03

ormy don't worry. it is so cold and nasty out there, 27th will be SPRING, is ages really.

Themasterandmargaritas · 23/02/2010 18:57

Aaaaaages yet Orm

JJ google some ITB exercises they should help.

Fishie, I am so norkily underchallenged that i am all nips and no substance My Wonderbra prevents me from experiencing any chafing and stops any onlookers get torpedoed while walking past.

thesouthsbelle · 23/02/2010 20:37

ok I deffo need to buy a new bra then, so we think going down a size is worth while as well or not really?

I think in light of the hellrunnner being a bit ambitious we're also going to try for the GSR as well in october. so fingers crossed 10 miles I beleive it is - ho hum, better get started on the training then I think - is it recommended to start at 3 miles per run and then build it up over the course of a month or would that be too quick?

hatwoman · 23/02/2010 20:39

hi everyone. good effort on your 9-miler popsy. master - that looks just awesome - is it the one you did last year?

well I'm a whole lot better - done a few 5-milers and 9 the other day. my overall training for he Edale Skyline is so short of what it should be though.and I'm still feeling a bit weak. but hey I'll give it a go. (I think). I just scared the pants of myself by having a quick lurk on the fellrunners association forum - there was a thread asking people how much training they do...some of them do 50-odd miles and upto 10,000 feet a week. nutters.

scared myself last night too by going out in the dark - it was very icy and really cold. and stupidly, very stupidly, I didn';t take any warm clothing...I spent the whole run sliding all over trying not to fall and do my ankle in and wondering how long it takes to die of exposure. and hoiw long it takes for mountain rescue to get to you. I was actually genuinely scared. but, as my mum would say, I've learned my lesson nd \i won;t go out so ill-equipped again.

hope everyone's ok.

Twink · 23/02/2010 22:28

Evening All!

Mmm, I've had a couple of scary moments like that Hat, mostly abroad but they've made me a bit more aware of how pear-shaped things can go in a very short time.

Orm, hope you lose the snot soon but you've plenty of time to build up again (as you well know!!)

Cracking effort Popsy

My sports bras are all snapped elastic and saggy bits, odd how I'll always make sure all of my other kit is ok but then I'm more with Master than Jordan...

Don't rule out the Hellrunner thesouthsbelle (can we call you Belle??), you've plenty of time and although I've not done it, lots of friends have & say it's quite a laugh (in a mad, psychotic running sort of way)

We've had a cracking half term, no running at all but loads of hill walking, Spinning, cross country skiing and some downhill too. Had a major emotional wobble but the friends we were staying with were fab & very understanding as MrT & I have known them since Uni days. MiniT did turn to me at one point and say 'Mum will you pull yourself together!' Erm, yes ok, that's me told!

Back to training plan tonight, speed interval session with the club - nearly lost my lunch but ran well so the cross-training must have helped.

Plan to do a long walk tomorrow morning, climb in the afternoon and run in the evening, then Thurs is MTB day and Friday Spinning & circuits. Mental note, make time to go swimming too...

I've been invited to a special birthday party on Sat, got to dress up - can any of you give me any ideas?? I'm clueless & will have to buy something as I only have my 'Christmas' velvet trousers and skinny black top.. Despite it being a running friend, I think lycra running tights are not what she has in mind.

fishie · 24/02/2010 14:18

i've got the freya bra, i find it better than shock absorber (def not a wonderbra for me that would be terrifying). also it comes in lovely scarlet not horrible white.

when does one resume running after chest inf? do i wait until cough has entirely gone?? it definitely qualifies for below the neck.

stickylittlefingers · 24/02/2010 16:14

hi - hoorah for rain! It's washed nearly all the snow and ice away. I've never been so pleased to see damp drizzle!

Re bras - I've used the M&S running and bravissimo ones, but do find they should be changed quite frequently as the suspension does seem to go! Otherwise find lorry drivers give me helpful tips when I'm running up the road (either that or they're weighing up a decision in each hand. I think that's a good sign I need a new bra tho!). I always buy black/coloured tho, as I agree the white ones aren't nice (or at least I'm too lazy a washer to keep them pristine anyway!)

hatwoman · 24/02/2010 17:51

you know I said I'd learned my lesson? well today I got lost on the moors in the fog. had a fleece and waterproof with me (learned that bit) but not a compass .

I jest a bit. The reality's not so bad. Firstly I was with someone (although I was the one who'd suggested the route and therefore the one who was meant to know where we were going...) and it would be virtually impossible to get really lost as you're never more than about 2 miles from a road. so although on a micro-level I was thinking I don't know where the hell we are and this isn;t the path I thought it was, on a macro-level I knew we had to hit the road eventually. we just reached it about a mile further down it than we should have done. which actually turned out perfectly because it made the run 9 miles, which was what we'd wanted. If we hadn't got disoriented it would probably have only been 8

sfxmum · 25/02/2010 14:11

hatwoman want to gets lost

had very short 2 mile jogs yesterday and today, after nearly 2 weeks off and not much sleep was the best I could do, maybe same again tomorrow then 4-5 mile run on Sunday

hope everyone is well

thesouthsbelle · 25/02/2010 20:10

hi all,

twink - yes indeed call me belle - it's all good. I am dead set on doing the hell runner, but will increase my training over all I think, have downloaded a print out for the beginners marathon in 16 weeks - so I figure if I start off with that and build on it, plus keep doing my combat twice a week, then once september starts can pick up either circuits or attack (althou that involves co ordination lol) and also go swimming when I don't have DS as well.

must say thou v v of all of you girls who are running 3 miles plus (well any miles plus actually lol)

have you all been running for long?

Wheelybug · 25/02/2010 20:22

ooh Belle - I said you'd be fine without even having a clue what the hellrunner was. Just had a google - it looks ...er... fun . A friend of mine does BMF and goes off and does their trail stuff but its only 5 or 10K. Might give one of those a go at some point (but am conveniently away skiing for the next one !).

I started running Jan 08 and took it slowly but got up to about 7.25 miles (the perimeter of richmond park) by June 08, then fell pregnant and took to my sofa (had been a long hard fought campaign). Didn't run for just over a yr and got back to it August 09 was running 5K twice a week up to Christmas and now finishing a 10K plan. Will run 10K for a bit before deciding where to go next ! Aim for October is at least the Kingston breakfast run in Oct (8 miles), possibly GSR or Royal PArks Half. Depends on how I'm feeling, how ambitious I'm feeling .

Well done Hat - glad things are looking up. Twink - sorry to hear about wobbly moments but guess they are pretty much par for the course.

JJ - a friend of mine has ITB problems and she uses a roller thing. Think it helps (not sure tho).

I did almost 5 miles on tuesday night and am in the gym tomorrow so need to do 45 mins on treadmill which I am soooo not looking forward to. That said, I've done something to my calf muscle and its really sore so not sure how I'll get on. Hopefully 10K on Sunday leg dependent.

Themasterandmargaritas · 26/02/2010 14:18

God Hattie I have this image of you running through swirling mists over bogs and through heather to appear like a beautiful image right next door to a quaint moorland pub. Do you ever feel slightly scared when getting lost?

Twink I'm glad to hear dd is being supportive . Enjoy the party, I would recommend a pair of leggings with a funky dress/tunic thing, Monsoon have some great ones. Put on a pair of heel shoe boot things and I'm sure you will look a knockout.

Blimey Belle your hellrunner sounds truly hellish.

I started running about 18mths ago when dc3 was about one. It was quick and easy and free to do straight from home. Since then I have done a 10k and two half marathons.

Good luck wheely for Sunday. Tomorrow we go off on our 6 hour drive, border crossing, visa getting, race registering then off to a friend's for the night before driving an hour to Moshi to run at 7am Sunday. All this just for 24 hours away from the dc. I must be stupid desperate.

hatwoman · 26/02/2010 18:55

"quick and easy and free to do straight from home." that's exactly why I started too. plus it being outside. I'm convinced it's good for your skin.

re when we started: I know I ran occasionally when I lived in a certain flat, which was between 95-98. but we're taking a quick loop of the park. probably on average once a month.

I entered an 8-mile race in, heck, 2005, which got me out 3 times a week. then slacked off again...in between 2005 and 2009 I entered another 8 mile race, a 16, then half-marathon, then the london marathon 2009. but inbetween all these races I stopped, sometimes for a good few months. with the exception of now. after FLM I was feeling so fit and good that I was determined not to slack off again - and, apart from Jan when I was unwell, I've kept it up.

hatwoman · 26/02/2010 19:00

master if I got lost on Kinder Scout I'd kack myself. but seriously, in my immediate area (a few miles south of Kinder) it's impossible to get really lost. lovely as it is it's criss-crossed with roads - and although you don;t see them much, and can pretend it's real wilderness, it's really not.

thesouthsbelle · 27/02/2010 08:53

will be back later with a proper update, but going to attempt a 3 miler today first one on the road in ooh about 8 years so wish me luck! (have alwasy done treradmil or none)
