Our thread has got too big.

Iwill start this one with two things:

Positive vibes for the exciting developments on the MN Marathon Relay thread and

Early ballot for GNR 2010 - you know you want to:)

Thanks for the encouragement everyone ! You almost make me think I can do it . I can't get a place yet so have a bit longer to procrastinate but will continue working towards it. Did 4 and a bit miles this evening.

Good news Hat !

Liath - I fancy the idea of adult swimming lessons. Now I've watched DD1 learn to swim front crawl it makes me want to learn properly too instead of the flapping around/ half drownin thing I usually do. A triathlon seems kind of fun but think I might have a while to go on that one - apart from the aforementioned terrible swimming style the only bike in this household has streamers on the handle bars and a dolly seat.

Probably going for a swim in the morning as dd2 is in the creche and I've run tonight then we're off to Center Parcs for a few days for the first time....

Twink · 11/02/2010 22:26

Good to hear so much positive news, esp Hat & hats off to Popsycal, awesome! Sorry that Liath isn't doing so well though.

I still have my wooden hockey stick too..

Wheely, you've LOADS of time to safely train for a half without injury. Hope you enjoy CP, we're off there later in the year - which one are you going to?

My first triathlon was in 2004, a tri-a-tri; I took the child seat off the back of my mountain bike but still had the bracket for my basket on , I think some people had sunglasses that cost more than my bike, but hey, I did it and could tell the world I was a triathlete!!

I've swum breatstroke for all my races so far but am having lessons to help my crawl - I'll need to be able to breathe on both sides to help my sighting in June so I'm trying hard - still can only do 2 lengths with any style so have a mountain to climb - actually that'd be easier for me!

I've had a really positive training week, ladies bike ride Sun, fast 3 miles run Mon, slow 9 miles run Tues, 2.5 hours climbing Wed then 4 miles steady run, 1.75 hours fairly tough mountain biking today then spinning tomorrow then off to Norway for 9 days to do downhill & cross country

MrT would be delighted as he made me promise we'd carry on doing 'stuff'. Mini is doing pretty well at present, and is enjoying planning home improvements & holidays.

Enjoy halfterm all,

xx

OMG! 12.5 miles today and if I'm not dead, I wish I was . Everything aches and I felt sick when i got back. Too much too quick. But I didn't realise that until I was 2/3 of the way round! Next time I shall take it a bit easier.

Still, slightly smug

CoteDAzur · 14/02/2010 06:51

Hi popsycal and others - I usually post in Couch-to-5k, as recently started running, but I'm here to ask a question to you more experienced runners:

So a friend and I decided to put our names down for a 10K race at the end of May, thinking it will give us the time to go from our current stage (Week 4 of BUPA program - i.e. 5 min run, 3 min walk for 25 mins) to 10K. However, the inscription form asks for our current time for 10K. What to write there?

I've been told "55 mins" is a respectable and achievable time, but wondering if I should write "No 10K experience yet". Have you put your name down for a race before you were remotely ready for it, and if so, what time did you put down?

Wallace · 14/02/2010 07:09

55 minutes is quite fast for a beginner. I would put down 75 minutes then if you beat it you will be well chuffed

I always over-estimate - partly on purpose and partly not.

Good luck

Orm - well done, that is fantastic. Give me some of your motivation please!

CoteDAzur · 14/02/2010 07:14

Thanks, Wallace

Rollergirl1 · 14/02/2010 20:53

Hi guys, am a newbie runner. Have been running 5k for the last week and have got my time down to 30mins. Am going to start upping my distance on my weekend run. My BIL is doing the Great North Run and can get me a place through a friend. Just wondering if this is achievable or if it's aiming a bit too high?

Themasterandmargaritas · 15/02/2010 08:00

Hi Cote, I'm with Wallace 70-75mins sounds reasonable then if you do beat it you will be delighted.

Welcome Rollergirl. I don't know when the GNR is, but I would say allow yourself about 10/12 weeks to go from 5k to 21k, so that you are not pushing your body too much too soon. I'm sure Bupa have a half marathon training plan (I'm assuming half? ) Otherwise I use these guys.

Orm, that's awesome. Is the weather easing up a little now?

I managed my fastest 8k on Saturday then yesterday I did a tedious 16k run after getting to bed at 1.30am and having quoffed several glasses of something bubbly.

Twink, enjoy Norway sounds amazing!

OrmRenewed · 15/02/2010 08:12

Weather was perfect yesterday master. Sunny and quite mild and dry(ish) underfoot even when I went off road. Lovely. Just wished my legs appreciated it They got fed up after about 9 miles.

Themasterandmargaritas · 15/02/2010 08:41

How I'd love to run through the Zummerzet countryside.....

OrmRenewed · 15/02/2010 09:02

Next time your over master, come for a run with me

Themasterandmargaritas · 16/02/2010 07:25

I would love to! I shall be in Sherborne in July.

Now Lance has told me I have run 250 miles since August last year. At which point should I be thinking about changing my running shoes?

I'm definitely on for my Kilimanjaro Marathon on the 28th, it'll be a marathon drive to get there, mad roads, border crossing, visa for Tanzania, potholes but what the hell, these opportunities don't come around every day do they?

Also registration has opened for one of the world's most difficult marathons. I have put together a team of ladies already but would be delighted to have a few MNers. It's a longshot I know, but worth asking.

liath · 16/02/2010 07:43

Wow, themaster, that looks fantastic.

Thanks for the stories of breast-stroke triathlons and less than suitable bikes . Makes me feel more optimistic. THere's an apperently very friendly super sprint tri near here in May so I'll see how training goes. The achilles seems to be settling and I've started setting my alarm to get up early and go for a short run/walk with the hound in the mornings.

Wheelybug · 16/02/2010 10:34

Hi All

Back from a hectic w/e in center parcs (We were at Longleat Twink). Managed a 50 min run saturday morning plus lots of cycling up hills (and down of course !) and came home and did a 45 min run yesterday as DH was around but was so knackered I burst into tears when I got home (not much sleep either due to catching up with friends/ DD2 being ill (not a great sleeper at best of times). Still, managed an ok distance in the time (about 9.5 mins a mile which if I can keep going for 10K would put me just sub- 1 hour which I'll be pleased at for first go in a while. That's this weekend's challenge. Probably going to rest for a couple of days and then do another 45 mins thurs pm and then go for teh 10K on sunday.

Anyway, yesterday I said I wasn't going to do a half marathon.... but then signed up for the alert for when the parks run is bookable.

In the first instance am going to find a 10K to run soon. Might down grade my autumn run to Kingston breakfast 8 miler (anyone here done the kingston breakfast run 8 or 16 ? I know a few of us are from around these parts).

Masters - that marathon looks great but I have hastily arranged a prior engagement .

sanfairyann · 16/02/2010 19:48

blooming heck at all the speeds and distances you lot do! but you are my inspiration so logging in to let you know I did my longest ever run today - 45 mins and covered 4.3 miles. guess I'll have to start picking up the pace a bit to keep up with you ladies
rollergirl - see you at the GNR - that's my target too.

soyabean · 16/02/2010 22:19

Hi all have not been here for weeks and weeks as just too busy with work and a bit stressed and not myself...
Glad you like the CD Master.
Have not been running much at all what with snow and work and just being a bit down and getting out of the habit. But am considering a 10k run in 2 weeks as that wd make me get going again, and then there's the MN one on 28th, and then Race for life in June...

Anyway just checking in xx

Wallace · 17/02/2010 07:16

More snow here. About another 6 inches on top of the compactd snow/ice.

I did fall on my bum really hard whne I was running yesterday. Was going down a steep hill in the woods and hit the ice under the snow! I was okay to carry on though

stickylittlefingers · 18/02/2010 11:49

Couldn't believe it when I looked out this morning and it was snowing again! When does winter end in this country??

But I've been getting out running again, which is good. Poor old legs seem not to like it so much (I think it's the lack of running plus the fact that lack of running means more of me to carry around. Vicious circle ). Away this weekend and not sure where I'll get a run in, but will take my stuff and see what can be done. Does anyone here run round Edinburgh? (please don't suggest up Arthur's Seat, unless you REALLY don't like me... )

Tis always so great to see people talking about the running here. Last night I seemed to be the only person out (was darned cold tho, so perhaps I was the only stupid person out running for a reason!)

soyabean · 18/02/2010 15:13

I've bought a new pair of running shoes! Eek, have never spent so much on footwear before except my Camper boots (which it has to be said look much nicer)... I will really have to do a lot of running now. I went for a run this morning but didnt wear them as its so damp and muddy But I will expect to have a new spring in my step when I do put them on.
I love half term! (teacher)

Wheelybug · 18/02/2010 15:22

LOL Soya - my first pair of proper running shoes are a few weeks old and I still run round puddles so I don't get them wet/dirty .

No running here - dealing with a poo-ey vomitous baby instead. Sob.

sanfairyann · 18/02/2010 20:18

bleurgh wheelybug!

I dont like my running shoes but they cost so much I keep on wearing them . can't wait to knacker them in and get some more so I run through every puddle

amthinking of entering a 10k race in april/may to get a bit of practice in for the GNR. did 7 k the other day so it's not too far off. what do you all think? do-able? good practice?

fishie · 18/02/2010 20:34

sanfairyann did you get them in a proper running shop? i got shoes and they hurt, took them back and it was all fine even though i'd worn them three times.

i have some sort of ghastly cough thing, stuck in house all week and had taken leave for half term, what a waste.

anyone doing newham 10k?

sanfairyann · 18/02/2010 20:37

really?? oh, I wish I'd known before I did quite so much running in them - don't think they'd take them back after a month of running in them. they get on my nerves though.

sfxmum · 18/02/2010 20:46

hello all

quick browse, n running since weekend half term here and with dh working all weekend I might have to get up quite early to have a chance of running before next Wednesday

wheely sorry about the illnesses hope there is rapid improvement

popsycal · 20/02/2010 17:42
