Our thread has got too big.

Iwill start this one with two things:

Positive vibes for the exciting developments on the MN Marathon Relay thread and

Early ballot for GNR 2010 - you know you want to:)

Thanks for that POpsy and good news for you - it has put me out of my suspense - the result is.....

unsuccessful

luckily DH not in either.

I feel a bit disappointed but realistically quite relieved. Next year...

Off to think about what my challenge should be then instead .

popsycal · 09/02/2010 22:11

charity place wheely??

OP posts:
sanfairyann · 09/02/2010 22:51

didn't win a place (but dh did ha ha as he didn't want to do it really) but have got a charity place instead so still training . . .

Wheelybug · 10/02/2010 13:53

I think I'lljust leave it for this year. If either DH or I had got a place we would have got a charity place but as neither of us have, we'd need 2 and then have to raise double etc etc.

Also, I'm quite relieved not to have to sort out the logistics of finding somewhere to stay etc etc.

I'm fine about it although could do with something to aim for - will have to get researching and hope for GNR next yr !

Wheelybug · 10/02/2010 19:53

So now, having decided I didn't want to train for a half marathon, am seriously considering the London Royal Parks Half in October.

So tell me, if you are like me -

  • Currently running not quite 10K but will e in the next couple of weeks
  • Only able to realistically run 3 x week and this would be 2x evenings (8pm or later)
  • Pretty sleep deprived (although this of course will sort out soon...)

is it possible to do enough training to feel comfortable doing a half marathon in 6 months time ? How long are the runs you need to do ??

sanfairyann · 10/02/2010 20:26

well I'm doing 2 runs a week and can only currently run 5 k so I hope the answer is yes

And you of course twink

I am swimming, walking, doing body balance classes but have nearly crashed the car a few times now when I see people running and am gazing wistfully after them (and checking out their running gear)

Oh well only another 25 weeks to go

fishie · 10/02/2010 20:55

soryy ds3 here already on 2nd wake up

OP posts:
Wheelybug · 10/02/2010 21:02

Thanks Popsy ! (actually I only 'knew' you before the running thread as someone who didn't get any sleep).

Will take a look at the bupa plan... but feel I may just go for it !

popsycal · 10/02/2010 21:09

my dark circles precede me

It is totally totally doable.
3-4 runs a week - mid week ones are never ever more than 50 mins even at the height of training.

long weeknd run which increases gradually - however I never did the 12 mile one - only got to 10 miles (once) before GNR. This year I have a feeling I will do the full length almost in training. Oh and my target is sub 2 hours hahahahaha. I need to add layers though

Wheelybug · 10/02/2010 22:01

Ok you've convinced me (maybe.....)

Hi to Girls ! Glad all is ok, good to see you.

Themasterandmargaritas · 11/02/2010 04:51

You can do it wheely. I second the two short runs during the week, 8k, 10k if you can, then build up the long run at the weekend, so I started with 12k, then 13k, then 15k, then 16k, then 18k, actually I think I only ever did 18k once and it was fine.

The last 5k you run on automatic anyway and half the battle is in your mind.

I only started running 18mths ago, so am no expert, but if I can do it, anyone can.

Girls lovely to hear you. You sound very active, I couldn't do any exercise when pregnant all I wanted to do was eat crisps sleep.

Wallace · 11/02/2010 06:34

Three years ago I went from no running at all(started running 1st May) to being ready for Half Marathon in the middle of October. I sprained my ankle badly just before the HM though so didn't do it but could have IYSWIm.

I followed the BUPA Half Marathon programme (after having done the 5k one). I think they say four runs a week but I only did three.

When I'm buliding up distance now I only do a long run every other weekend, and about an hour the weekends I'm not doing a long one.

Wallace · 11/02/2010 06:36

girls - glad to hear you are doing well (and Congratulations I think I missed the news!)

girlsyearapart · 11/02/2010 07:07

themaster I have to do something as eating is a strong contender for favourite passtime at the mo..

hatwoman · 11/02/2010 10:37

Hi again everyone. wheely definitely do-able - you'll love it. girls nice to "see" you.

well...things definitely looking up. did 2 miles on tuesday - and 4.5 today. I also went on the Fell Runners Association forum to ask opinions about doing Edale when I've missed all of january - they were very much of the view it was do-able, training wise. I still feel a bit of a doubt health-wise...but all I can do is keep going out and see what happens.

I've still got stiff/odd/pins-and-needly and slightly feeble hands and arms but other than that I'm feeling pretty good. (can't remember if i explained this before but ms can be what's called relapsing-remitting which means you can get attacks and then recover, or partially recover.)

it was a lovely morning to get out there today - a dusting of snow and lovely sunshine

Wallace · 11/02/2010 12:15

hooray hat btw I had a dream I was reading a fell running book and it was written by no other than our veryy own hatwoman

MoshiMoshi · 11/02/2010 13:07

wheely - go for it! May be tempted to join you.

I am aching all over from hockey training on Tuesday. My wrists were really sore yesterday and now my quads and lower back are sore. Goes to show how rubbish my core and obliques are after having four pregnancies! Was lots of fun despite the less serious teams not being there and training with the first and second squad members. Hilariously, using my 15+ year old stick I noticed that sticks are no longer wooden but very high techie carbon fibre sticks. Clearly, I will need to brush up on all that and on my technique as rules have changed in 15 years!

Happy running one and all.

MoshiMoshi · 11/02/2010 13:09

hat - continuing to send positive thoughts your way. Also sending some to my friend who had her 30 week old baby delivered early as she had high blood pressure. Thank goodness for modern technology!

peachsmuggler · 11/02/2010 14:52

Go for it Wheely! I was in about the same position as you last Jan when I started a 12 week program to train for the Reading half. I ran 3 times a week and was sleep deprived! Build up your long run slowly each week and use your two midweek runs to get shorter, good quality runs in. You can do it!

Am going to do a 5k in May as I feel am at the stage I can run and run and run but still struggle with my speed so this will give me something to aim for. My fastest has 5k has been 26 mins 45 secs so think I will try to aim for a sub 25 min race.

at Moshi's hockey stick. Glad you had fun!

liath · 11/02/2010 17:10

! Hockey sticks aren't wooden anymore?? When did that happen?

Hat, so glad you're on the mend.

I've been given the all clear by the physio only for my achilles tendon to start hurting after walking the dog . Honeslty I am starting to think there is something wrong with my tendons, why can't I just exercise like any normal person?

Anyway, I've signed up for adult swimming lessons next month and am going to have to just accept that I have build up anything I do very slowly. And am probably going to enter a super-sprint triathlon, or at least see if I can train towards one.
