Never ever have a huge tidy up the day before a race. DH managed to throw my number and timing chip in the bin!!!!! Took 4 emptyings of wheelie bin to find both. I was very cross!!

Anyway. I dropped DS1 and DS2 at my parents' earlier as they live on the route so they are sleeping over to watch tomorrow. As I was driving back, all the Bupa stuff and banners were out and I thought about the next time I would be going down that road I would be half way there

Good luck all

Wallace · 19/09/2009 20:22

Well done hatwoman, are the first three miles the uphill ones?

Good luck pops (and all others!) glad you found your chip!

hatwoman · 20/09/2009 11:58

does anyone else keep a sad little log book of all their races? or is that just me because there are so many races round here for me to enter? I have a little table with all sorts of stats in it - it's meant to encourage me by showing my improvements. but damn those improvements are negligible slow. Just got the results from yesterday's race - I was 49th out of 70 women and 208/246 overall. worked out as what I believe would be called a percentile (told you I was sad) that's equivalent to 70th/100 in the women's race and 84/100 overall. I guess that is an improvement, actually. In my first fell race in June I came 91/100 in the women and 96th overall. oo I'm feeling quite happy about that!

looking forward to hearing about the GNR.

Twink · 20/09/2009 12:20

I'm even sadder than that Hat - I've got log books detailing every training session as well as my races: route, time taken, distance, injury niggles, even the weather!! I refer back to them when I'm training for a particular race to see if I'm on track with my schedule cf with previous years.

Admittedly, I've not been filling it in lately as training has been so sporadic that I don't want to see it in black & white.

Well done on your improvements though, they ARE significant despite you not thinking so.

Like you, I'm waiting for the GNRers to be back.

hatwoman · 20/09/2009 14:10

oh I do that as well twink! I use the goodrunguide - which I love. but the races I do separately - I have columns for overall and women's place, for percentile place, for my speed compared to the women's winner's speed, for pace, for flat equivalent pace...

Wallace · 20/09/2009 17:19

I started a training log recently.

I really wish I had kept a note of my places and times for each race.

Twink · 20/09/2009 18:26

Kindred spirits Hat! I must admit, I'd not thought of the statistical comparisons with top woman finisher but it would be interesting to check.

Wallace, I scribble my times, place, weather etc on the back of my race numbers then pop them in a folder in case I don't remember to update my log book immediatly.

Just call me anorak...

Hey GNRers we're waiting for news!!

back later

fishie · 20/09/2009 19:22

well done! i have been thinking of you all day. tell us more...

Themasterandmargaritas · 20/09/2009 19:24

Wow Popsy, that is brilliant! Well done you.

OrmIrian · 20/09/2009 19:25

Hello everyone. Well done all you race runners!

Still not running atm. Tendonitis just too painful. But am hoping to give it a trial sometime this week - just a few miles.

Wallace · 20/09/2009 19:49

Well done - fab time!

morethanyoubargainfor · 20/09/2009 20:14

well done, i'm of you, i want to run that far!

hatwoman · 20/09/2009 20:36

well done popsy - did you enjoy it? I bet it's a great atmosphere.

Twink - dh has just told me I ought to work out the/my (?) standard deviation. I have only the vaguest memory of what a standard deviation is...but now he's said it I fear he might have to show me and I might have to add another column...

hatwoman · 20/09/2009 20:37

Wallace - most races have finishing times on line somewhere - I bet you could find them

sfxmum · 20/09/2009 21:48

well done popsy great time and wel done all other racers

I think I need to start taking training seriously to get me over the cold dark months
something to keep me motivated

morethanyoubargainfor · 21/09/2009 18:58

hello everyone,

had a good run tonight, managed a whole 2.7 miles, thats th efurthest i have done so far.

I find the first 1/2 mile quite tedious and hard work but them seem to find my natural pace.

Hope everyone is ok especially the GNRers.

Themasterandmargaritas · 21/09/2009 19:24

How are you all feeling now you GNRers?

Well done Morethan, you are pretty much at the 5k mark!

I have done 3x 5k last week and today managed my first 10k since my half marathon, without my knee hurting, I was delighted, plus it took 61 minutes with a slight hill walk thrown in. Now, the big question is, could I manage to train for a half on Oct 25th? It is an almost flat course compared to my hellish bush run, but still, is it a stupid thing to aim for? Should I stick to the 10k race?

popsycal · 21/09/2009 20:05

ok going to attempt my GNR report with sleepy ds3 on my knee!

IT WAS FAB FAB FABF
Got there early ish with BIL and his friend as they were twitchy about catching the baggage buses. The start is right next to an old flat I used to live in around 13 ish years ago but the run has grown since then, so much so that the 12 portaloos that I queued for 40 minutes to use were metres away from my old front door! My street used to be open for traffic when I lived there!!

Anyway. Got in the starting pens and started feeling dead nervous and excited. The start was good (crossed the start line as the clock showed 6 minutes). Took me ages to feel comfortable and to get into my stride - tbh it was almost 5K by the time I did (and overtook Cheryl Baker lol!!)

I made sure Idrank plenty as it was very hot from about 30 minutes in. I carried my ipod nike plus as Iwas twitchy about not starting too fast but imainly just listened to my legs.

At the halfway point were 2 of my gorgeous boys who I gave a big kiss to and kept going.

The John Reid road seemed to go on forever (itis where I failed my drivng test at 17!!) but the hardest bit was 10 miles on and the steady climb up to the coast. I slowed right down but looking I had done some quicker stretches earlierin anticipation.

Was really glad to see the sea and feel the breeze. I also has a bit and a (almost) sprint finish as I knew I was around 2:!0.

Official time 2:09.53

I amover the moon. My accpetable time was 2:£0 and I hoped to doit in 2:24 (I watched the Berlin world championship marathon and wanted to be half as good as the winner - same time half the distance) btu I knew that 2:10 was possible given all the right conditions and based on my 10k time in July. BUt that would only be in an ideal situation. It was hot and hilly. So Iwas sooooooooooooooooo pleased!

BIL and friend did it in around 2:45 - I felt a little smugguilty!!

Roll on next year.

Dont feel too bad today but I do have a very sore and bruised secondlittlest toe.It was giving mealittle bother from around mile 8 and I darent take my shoes off when I finsihed. The nail willl come off.

Looking for new shoes with a wider toe area.

So what now:!???

Twink and hatwoman - tell me about this running log thing. This is the sort of sad thing I like

hatwoman · 21/09/2009 20:46

thanks for posting that popsy - sounds great. I might be wrong but I get the impression that for atmosphere the GNR's up there with the London marathon. I'm really tempted for next year.

For my normal log book I used goodrunguide.co.uk. You do pay an annual fee (about £15 iirc) and I know there are others on-line that are free. but I really like this one. You can measure your routes and/or download them from a garmin. and it creates lots of stats for you. You can try it free for a month I think. (certainly could when I started using it).

my race log book is just in a word document. I'm planning to get dh to help me turn it into a spread sheet with inputted formulas. (I'm crap at spreadsheets. he deals with them for a living)

popsycal · 21/09/2009 20:56

will look into it! I do spreadsheets so may doit that waay :

go on- do GNR 2010 - 30th anniversary -you know youwant to

Twink · 21/09/2009 21:46

Popsy, what a superb result, well done you!!

Although in most areas of life I'm an IT anorak, for my running I use these log books, they even have their own little book shelf..

Master, it would certainly be possible. If I were you I'd try to leave your options open until nearer the time, gradually upping the mileage to see how your knee copes. It wouldn't be wasted training as if you did the 10k, the over-distance training would have made you stronger and more likely to get a PB. On the other hand, if the knee holds up, you'd be almost certain to get a PB for the half as it's more friendly terrain than last time. Heads you win, tails they lose.

popsycal · 21/09/2009 22:09

so whatdo i do next??

liath · 22/09/2009 08:04

Edinburgh marathon, of course Popsy . Well done, you must be so chuffed.

Am currently in an ankle brace to try and stop my tendon grumbling, it feels much better already so fingers crossed I can get back on the road before 2010....

popsycal · 22/09/2009 10:31
