Hi all I am back at work (teacher) and finding it hard to find time get on here but nice to pop in and admire all your amazing running! I did 5k on Sat and 8k on Sun and enjoyed the slightly cooler but still sunny weather. I'm going to try to go once mid week too, but its so hard to fit in...

mooseloose · 14/09/2009 21:55

I much more enjoy running when its cooler. can't bear the sun on my face and on me!

morethanyoubargainfor · 15/09/2009 07:49

good mornig everyone.

I have been really bad and been unable to get out since last week, but i will go tommorrow evening, i promise.

peachsmuggler · 15/09/2009 11:58

Hi everyone.

Great to hear about everyone's progress!

Bleeding from the mouth!!!! Hardcore.

Great news about getting Mr T home Twink.

Am newly back from holidays and pining for sunnier weather. It is foul out there today.

Did first run in almost 4 weeks yesterday. Just 3 miles but was fun. Despite my moaning about the weather, it is so much more pleasant than running in the summer heat.

Am feeling inspired, and although I don't have any races booked, I am going to stick to 3 times a week and try to get really fit.

During yesterday's short run my legs felt a bit heavy, which could be down to the kilos of cheese I consumed while in France. Yum!

Happy running everyone!

hatwoman · 15/09/2009 13:55

so ladies, what do you make of this - Eddie Izard running rather a long way. does there just come a point when you can keep on running?

morethanyoubargainfor · 15/09/2009 17:41

I need advice, maybe from eddie izard! i have found a local race, and i feel i need to enter something to get me more motivated, but do i enter?

It is in the first week of November and it is 7 miles.

Will i be able to do that in the time?

will i feel really stupid as i have never done anything like this before?
will i look completely unfit and out of place amongst all you athletic types!

i am nervous about it but i think that has more to do with my fear of the unknown, what to expect form my very first race.

So should i do it?

popsycal · 15/09/2009 18:35

runnerworld often has reviews of events - check it out - if it is your first, you may prefer something that is beginner-friendly

hatwoman · 15/09/2009 19:30

ime all races are friendly and have all sorts of shapes and sizes of people and standards. (but there are some - hilly and hard ones generally - that attract more hard core runners - so it is worth finding a review). it's very exciting doing your first one - you'll never recapture the same thrill again! my first race was 8 miles and I loved it.

so no, you won't look out of place - or unfit. I think I can (now, finally) count myself as a keen and consistent runner, and as fit - but I don't remotely have an "athletic" build. I'm short and not at all skinny or sinewy.

what distances do you do at the moment? they say the basic rule is that you can increase your weekly total safely by 10 per cent - however I've read (and agree) that at the lower end of the spectrum you can increase it by a bit more than that (but possibly not if you're overweight, over 40 and new to running and various other provisos). I've upped my mileage by more than that in the past but I've only done what I felt comfy with. this article's quite good.

check out runner's world too - lots of interesting articles and also training schedules there.

definitely do yourself a schedule - if you're anything like me you'll stick to it out of fear. a race is definitely a real motivator.

morethanyoubargainfor · 15/09/2009 19:37

thanks pops, that is where i found it, all the reviews from last years runners say it is beginner friendly. I am more worried about the distance tbh as i have only jjust managed to do 2 miles.

popsycal · 15/09/2009 20:41

ok so how many weeksaway....

morethanyoubargainfor · 15/09/2009 21:07

just over 8

popsycal · 15/09/2009 21:38

start on week 2 of this???

mooseloose · 15/09/2009 21:41

I find the hardest part is getting up to 4 miles. After that you can add them on more easily.

Even now i still find the first 4 the hardest, and then I relax and get my second wind (or go numb - one or the other!)

stickylittlefingers · 16/09/2009 14:44

Hi again and thanks for the advice! I think it's getting better, so hopefully I'll be match fit for Sunday. In the end I just want to enjoy it.

Morethan - I've been following the BUPA regimes (religiously! Until getting the silly cough) and I've found it very good for building up slowly. Just having the one long run with short ones during the week is quite child care friendly.

Twink · 17/09/2009 08:22

Just wanted to wish all this weekend's racers good luck!

For those of you doing GNR, weather forecast looks ideal for running; dry, light winds and not too hot or too cold. A useful tip I was given before my first London marathon was to choose my kit as if it was 10 degrees hotter than forecast, as the heat given off all those bodies is significant. Obviously the GNR route is more open than London streets but there are more people! At the risk of sounding like your mothers, don't forget your sunscreen either

Above all, wherever you're running this weekend, enjoy it!

stickylittlefingers · 17/09/2009 09:10

Thank you Twink - being a newbie no advice is unwarranted!

hatwoman · 17/09/2009 10:20

wallace - how was the hill race? was it full of very keen looking men in vests?

Wallace · 17/09/2009 12:15

Hill race was great fun It wasn't too steep at first but then it got very very steep - I had to scramble up some bits

The downhill was the best bit once I got my confidence. I was giggling away to myself as I skidded through the mud

It was full of very keen men in vests and shorts. They laughed at me when I said the race was more fun when I gave up all hope of trying to run up the hill

My time was 46 minutes something. I think the winner was about 25 mins. I was second last

I also did a 5k time trial with my club last night. 25.12 which is almost a minute faster then my fastest timetrial, and only 15 secs slower than my PB on flat road (this was forest track with a few hills)

And all with tired legs from Tuesday night too

sfxmum · 17/09/2009 13:20

hello all

quick drop by to wish all GNR people good luck esp. popsy

Good luck everyone running the GNR! Just getting back into running now as I just have two DCs with the older two DCs at school. I am just running to school and back along a more scenic route, pushing the two younger ones in the buggy, which is either a 3 or 4 mile loop but am hoping that doing this five times a week will shift the extra stone of baby weight I am carrying. When I am back to my usual weight I can think about a proper winter training programme to get myself a good level of base fitness.

Glad you enjoyed your debut triathlon, Wallace! They are great fun and the sense of camaraderie is very strong in particular at smaller club-run races. I had thought about dusting down my trisuit (lycra -eek!) and wetsuit for the 2010 racing season but I must admit that the last thing I can imagine doing and complicating my life with is all of the faffing around with triathlon! I may just focus on running, although my lovely Bianchi and the lure of beating old times does slightly beckon from time to time...

Wallace · 18/09/2009 19:50

Good luck to GNR runners Is it sat or sun?

Moshi - it does take a bit more time training for three things, doesn't it! I will be doing more though

fishie · 18/09/2009 19:57

well done wallace, i am not good with heights or slipping so it sounds my worst nightmare.

best of luck to all gnrers.

having survived my first 5k i am considering finding a 10k but not entirely sure why. is this the thin end of the wedge and i'll end up doing a marathon?

saggarmakersbottomknocker · 18/09/2009 20:02

Good luck to the GNRers. Looks like it will be nice weather - hope not too warm

anonamummy · 18/09/2009 20:07

HAventrun since 9 miles on sunday. Meant to do afew short, easy runs but been hectic. So! Hopefully will be okonSUnday - amlookingforward toit. But with a fewweeksofhorrnedous nights with ds2 and ds3 (even more horriblethan usual) I don't know where I will summon the energy from

broken keyboard still

hatwoman · 19/09/2009 17:57

hi everyone. I'm just back from my 8th fell race. It was good - hard though. I'm not convinced the distances of these things suit me - they're nearly always about 5 miles. I hate the first 3 but then start to feel strong and quick towards the end. but maybe that's just the hills...

hope the GNR goes well for everyone
