mooseloose · 13/09/2009 18:52

hang on- just going to look......

mooseloose · 13/09/2009 18:53

Zone J, near the back!

mustrunmore · 13/09/2009 19:00

Hello I did used to come on this thread a while back, but I just didnt keep up wih it; I only really keep to my post natal thread! But its nice to lurk sometimes and see what people do/can do etc; I always need incentives. And omg I need one now... due to hols and dental agony I've hardly run lately, but I've got the 10km in Finsbury Park next weekend . I did Hyde Park 5km last sunday, on big painkillers, and even started bleeding from the mouth just after 3km! I took 30mins exactly, which wasnt bad under the circumstances I thought. But next weekend is twice the distance (obviously!) and hilly apparently. I dont know whether to even bother, but I dont want to miss it iyswim...

hatwoman · 13/09/2009 19:00

good time for your 9 miles popsycal. I went out to do about 7 or 8 this morning. I was nearing the last couple of miles (which, given that the first 5 or so were really steep and hard, was like the last 5 per cent of the run) - and I fell. tripped over a stone and found myself down flat. bashed my knees on the stoney path, one knee was all bloody. I really thought I was going to faint and/or be sick. (dh says I'm a right wuss. dds say they do teh same thing all the time in the playground and don;t make a fuss. nothing like a bit of sympathy ay?). I've got quite some bruises but have to concede that though it hurt like hell it wasn't that bad.

mustrunmore · 13/09/2009 19:01

Oh and it makes me so nostaglic to read about you doing the GNR; dh and myself did it together just before getting pg with ds1, and was such a good time in my life. I'd love to do it again.

mooseloose · 13/09/2009 19:04

hatswoman, I fell down some steps in March when out running, it really hurt my knees and pulled my arms!

Wallace · 13/09/2009 20:22

Hi all, sorry haven't been managing to keep up

HOpe MrT is fighting.

I did a novice Triathlon last Sunday - it was FUN

I now need to get on track for half marathon in Oct.

Also I need to make a decision: Edinburgh Marathon has just opened and I'm not sure whether to enter. I was hoping it would be a ballot so I didn't have to make up my mind yet.

I have entered the London ballot, and obv I will only do one or the other.

Edinburgh would be more doable as it is a lot closer, but imagine if I did get a London place that would be an experience.

I am not sure yet whether I should do a marathon yet. I think I would have to be selfish to take so much time to train.

Thoughts please!

PS hatwoman - I am doing a hill race on Tuesday. 3.5 miles with an 800ft climb

mooseloose · 13/09/2009 20:29

I don't know if I could do a marathon, so i admire you! Have done one other half before. But doing another 13 miles seems an awful lot more!

hatwoman · 13/09/2009 20:52

ooo good luck with the hill race wallace - do you mind me asking which one it is?

Wallace · 13/09/2009 21:03

Just a small local one - Creag Bheag

moose - see, that's why I'm umming and ahhing. I would like to do it to see if I could.

I have only been running a couple of years, and am training for my third half. But in between halfs my milage plummets down.

MrsWednesday · 13/09/2009 21:27

Just back from my paltry 2.9 miles tonight, nothing in comparison to some of the distances (and hills) everyone else is doing! No major aches and pains though so feeling a bit more chipper about getting back to previous running standard eventually.

Much love to MrT, hope you are all enjoying time at home together and that you are managing to sneak out for a run every now and again Twink.

All the very best of luck to those doing the GNR next week, I am very jealous.

mooseloose · 13/09/2009 21:31

I did ten this morning and it was ok. So very pleased with myself. Will just do a short one mid week.

hatwoman · 13/09/2009 21:34

just googled Creag Bheag - it looks amazing. I get a bit scared of looking at really beautiful places in case I start to think the Peaks aren't good enough

liath · 13/09/2009 22:30

Decisions decisions, Wallace! It's supposed to be good marathon because it's nice & flat, just hope they don't run out of water again next year . Good luck for the hill race.

hatwoman · 14/09/2009 11:23

to those wondering about marathons - I can't recommend it enough. it comes just after having kids and getting married and probably in the same place as getting a distinction in my masters as major achievements of my life. might sound a bit precious to say that (esp to people who've done more than one and/or other amazing things) but it was seriously brilliant. however the time thing is key - I work about 3-4 days a week, and dds are both f-t at school - also dh works from home a lot (ie doesn;t commute/leave the house early) - so I was able to do 2 or 3 runs a week while they dds were at school and/or early morning and only had to do one at the weekend (usually fairly early am - the rest of the household is lazy so they'd just be mooching around/having breakfast when I got back). I do really fail to see how anyone who works f-t and/or looks after their kids f-t (of some mixture of the two) can do it (not without having a huge impact on their family). but if you do have the time I would say - go for it. I really do believe that anyone can do it if they put their mind to it.

19fran76 · 14/09/2009 13:46

Hello runners

Just popped in to say that I too am back out running after a few weeks out of action. Working at a few shorter but hillier runs at the moment until I feel ready to kick it up a notch. Can relate to the comment about re-learning your breathing. Beginning to fall into place again gradually.

Good luck with your race tomorrow Wallace.

stickylittlefingers · 14/09/2009 17:47

thanks moshi moshi (sorry that was a while back!) - yes I am very desk-bound and that's probably the cause - I do warm up and warm down doing calf stretches (and others), but while it all feels very nice at the time, I'm not sure that it is thorough enough.

Just at the moment have an annoying cough and am very short of breath. It's got to go by Sunday cos it's just not happening at the moment and

Any good cough remedies gratefully received!

Wallace · 14/09/2009 19:21

sticky - just the usual hot lemon and honey. Doc says it is as effective as any cough medicine

Hi fran, thanks. It is a very informal one, just organised by someone local. No timing or anyhting so no pressure!

liath - Oh yes, didn't a lot of the water get stolen, or something?

hatwoman - I don't work and my two older kids are at school and ds2 just started nursery so I have 3 x 2.5 hours a week (could up it to five mornings but don't want to) but one of them is taken up with a PiYo class I have just started going to.

But once I get to realy long runs 2.5 hours isn't going to be long enough. And dh is away almost every other Sunday.

Also Ido get more tired when I am training hard and the family have to put up with me lacking energy after a long run.

I'll need to make my mind up soon!

sassy · 14/09/2009 19:30

Ok, I am NOT a proper runner but I kinda want to get from 4k up to 10k in the next month to 6wks.

I did 2.5mi in 18min yesterday. There were hills and everything!

Gonna read thread now to see if I need to slink off to the couch potato group...

popsycal · 14/09/2009 20:04

sassy - that seems a fairly big jumpin distance in a short time

sassy · 14/09/2009 20:43

Yeah I know, pops; there is a 10k run which a friend is badgeringgently encouraging me to do with her. I am not committed! But do intend to give it a decent shot.

mooseloose · 14/09/2009 21:01

People dont realise do they how many hours you have to 'put' into running- it's not just the race on the day. It's a real lifestyle changer for a long time - and this is just for a half marathon, not a full one! i do my long runs on a Sunday morning when the children all dopey and lying about still!

Sassy that is a fast run time! I can do that if I do a quick speed run two miles, but no more than that!

mooseloose · 14/09/2009 21:04

By the way, I had a bad chest in march before my first half marathon. It was sooo tight, and I couldn't breath. Doc offered me an inhaler. But no anti bio because its a virus. I didnt run for a month. the best advice I was given was to breath in steam from a cup of boiling water - no need cover head or anything, just breath it in. I did my run in the end.
