Yayyy. Well done Popsy, that's a brilliant time. Really glad you enjoyed it!

stickylittlefingers · 22/09/2009 12:37

Popsy - that's fantastic - well done you!

I had a fantastic day too - it's just amazing to be a part of it all... was very happy with my 2h30 as well - it was hot so I kept it very steady (so many people keeling over and being taken away in ambulances made me think it wasn't time to start pushing it too hard )

Would def def recommend to anyone - I've not done any other runs apart from the Race for Life so not exactly experienced, but it must be up there among the most atmospheric. Couldn't have asked for a more beautiful day too - South Shields was looking like the med!!

popsycal · 22/09/2009 13:47

excellent stickylittlefingers - well done!
It was a great day

Wallace · 22/09/2009 15:40

Well done, stickyfingers, it is such an achievement

popsy - I am rather that you went faster than me on your first Half. My second wa slower too Maybe my third (in Oct) will be faster

angelene · 22/09/2009 16:02

Hello everyone, may I join you?

I'm massively impressed by the GNR-ers. I have only recently started running 'properly' - i.e. outside and not on a treadmill and have definitely got the bug. After doing the Race for Life 5k and feeling that was well within my compass I'm doing the Swansea 10k on Sunday which I'm really looking forward to.

Problem is that my (always slightly dodgy) knees started playing up a couple of weeks ago, and now I've come down with a cold. I doubt I'll do any running now until the day because I tend to react badly to colds - they go onto my chest and my (mildish) asthma makes an appearance. I'm hoping to get through on adrenaline and the miles in my legs but I think my ideas of doing 65 mins are a bit out there really. I'm just glad I got a 2k run in last week so I have a bit of confidence in my knees.

Anyone else doing that race? I bought myself a new top for the occasion, I love buying running stuff!

popsycal · 22/09/2009 18:36

welcome angelene¬!

Wallace - I am that you are . I class you as a proper runner

I am feeling more and more chuffed with myself as Ispeak to more people who keep going on about the heat and the hills.

I need a race to keep me getting out of the door. My sis and I are going to do a santa dash in early december - but that's just 4k. Would really like a 10k I think.

I amalso feeling the urge to join a running club - 2 good ones very close to me. But the days they are on clash with ds1 and ds2's sport activities. Hmmm. And the nights are getting darker.

I need a plan. Iwork best with a plan and a goal

Wallace · 22/09/2009 19:41

angelene - welcome Do rest til sun, your knees will feel better too - do you always get more achey knees when you have a cold?

popsycal - I like to think of myself as a proper runner, but I'm not sure "proper runners" see me that way

I also find having a goal really helps - my long term goal is to get under 2 hours for a half marathon. I did say long term...

Running club if you can - I can't put into words how much I love my running club

Hopefully you can find a 10k to keep you motivated. Also look out for trail races for some variation

angelene · 22/09/2009 21:11

Thanks guys

Wallace - my knees have always been a bit crap (I used to be a swimmer and we have big shoulders and shit knees ) but with the darkening evenings I had to change my nice run along a smooth, tree-lined cycle path. I went on a pavement route which was VERY poor terrain - it was narrow, so I was on and off it all the time, and rough and I really think that's what did it. Also I'd spent that day working from home - which means sitting at the dining table rather than in a proper office chair.

So frustrating that just as me knees get better then I get this bloody cold!

I'd love to do a half marathon but I'm a long way off that just yet. I'll see how the winter goes, I'm not ready to stop though!

stickylittlefingers · 23/09/2009 09:14

Popsy - I was thinking of doing the Richmond 10k with my brother for that exact reason - hopefully it's not full already. And am joining a running club too - I'd never heard of them til I heard them being "announced" at the GNR - sent them an email and they sound lovely and friendly (i.e. not too scary!)

Angelene (lovely name btw) - I started from scratch to do the GNR - did a race for life in May and went on from there. That's with a full time job, a 2yr old and a 5 yr old and a figure that doesn't immediately suggest "runner" So I am the living proof that anyone can do a half marathon!

angelene · 23/09/2009 12:35

Hi sticky - the name is from an old PJ Harvey song which I love.

Congratulations on a rapid rise to half marathon - that's really impressive. I think my problem is that I enjoy my Friday night wine too much so I don't get out on Saturday morning .

I don't have a runner's figure either but I'm hoping by losing a bit through running and eating a bit better I can get down a size (which will help my knees too, I know I know - see above re Friday night wine!)

Richmond 10k sounds like a good idea - certainly a beautiful place to run.

mooseloose · 23/09/2009 22:45

Hi, I ran mine in 2.36, and very pleased with that! I had hoped to run it all, but flaked at ten miles. Up to then I ran 10 min miles, but my back really hurt, so I walked a bit and then decided to have a good stretch. It did the trick, and i got going again.
It was a really hard run in the heat and the hills. Lots of people on the road side with ambulances.

Themasterandmargaritas · 24/09/2009 07:44

Well done Moose! I can contest that the heat really can wipe you out. We are back to hot hot hot weather, about 28 degrees......

Welcome angelene, you are talking to another knee sufferer here, rest it, then do a little at a time until it starts to feel stronger. If you feel it starting to hurt then stop running and walk, don't push it.

Thanks Twink for your words. You are right, I shall register for both, after all the money goes to a great cause, and I can decide the week before, which one to do. I have a training plan and am starting in the middle of it, I managed a good 5 miles today in 9.19 pace. I'm going to push my usual 10k to 12 and see how that feels on Saturday.

Wallace · 24/09/2009 19:47

Moose - well done. Feel proud

master - what are your plans? (and why do i always call you "master" )

angelene - certainly don't have a runners figure either. I reckon anyone can do a Half Marathon - the man who came just behind me in my last half was 81 years old! I there were more than a few, erm "portly" folk.

I must do 8 or 9 miles tomorrow. I haven't run for over a week due to a cold. Still coldy and no energy and a bit of a copugh, but Aviemore Half marathon in just over 3 weeks

Themasterandmargaritas · 24/09/2009 20:09

Wallace. You and many others.

What date is Aviemore? I should be doing the same as you I think, my half is 25 Oct. I am using this but starting on week 11, however I can't do 11 miles and so will do 12k and see if I can keep going for longer, I just don't want to risk the knee too much.....

mooseloose · 24/09/2009 20:20

Sticky - I came in just after you! 2.36.

Wallace · 24/09/2009 20:23

Aviemore is the 18th. For my first half marathon 2 years ago (the one I didn't do because I sprained my ankle badly 3 weeks before..) I followed the BUPA schedule.

For the 2 I have done since then I have sort of made up my own loosely based on the BUPA one.

Two weeks before raceday I do 10 or 11 miles. 4 weeks before I do 8/9 miles, 6 weeks before I do 7 and 8 weeks before I do 6 miles. On the in between weeks I do an hour/5 or 6 miles.

I only do a long run every other week otherwise I find I get very weary. So according to my schedule you should do 8 or 9. Does that help?

Though if I did more runs over a longer distance I would probably get faster on long runs..

Themasterandmargaritas · 24/09/2009 20:31

That is very encouraging, thanks Wallace, I'll do 9 miles on Sat, then two lots of 6 miles next week and see how I get on. I just want to prove to myself that I can run it all the way,if my knee holds up, after having to run/walk the last 5k in June.

dillinger · 25/09/2009 15:56

You lot sound wonderful

I started running last year, joined a 0-5k group, then a 5-10k one but I didnt complete it.

I really enjoyed running and want to start again but I find it difficult by myself and I dont have anyone to run with. Ive had a couple of ppl that wanted to but were unable to due to dodgy knees and whatnot. I liked being more toned, Im currently unhappy with my shape and know that this would help me, plus it did wonders for my mood.

Ideally I would like to run in the early mornings, Id get it out of the way then too lol but I have a huge fear of being attacked I find it difficult to want to do anything when dp gets home and thats the only other time I could go out. I know people arent interested in me running past but Im quite self conscious.

I can only dream of being as good as half of you on here! Encouraging though I must say xx

mooseloose · 25/09/2009 20:03

I have a problem running in day light too. i go in the evening in the dark! Well, I did when I have a friend to run with. Now I go evening and make sure I am back before dark. On aSunday i go early, 8 ish, and its nice then - no one up yet! I worry too about running in the woods even in daylight.

Wallace · 25/09/2009 20:08

I did 8 today in the strong wind and sunshine and it has got rid of my cold (I am slightly off my schedule - about 5 days behind but nevermind)

dilinger - have you thought about joining a running club? Lots of them cater for beginners and it is very encouraging and helps you get out the door (often the hardest bit!)

popsycal · 25/09/2009 20:29

elcome dilinger

I am pondering what to do now. My legs were totally fine by Wednesday. I have a 4k fun run (in santa costume) in early December but can't really find anything else local during the winter months.

If you have an ipod nike thingy, they are doing this mass 10kthing on 24/10 (the 'human race' [hmm0) where you just do your own 10k and upkoad data. Anyone fancy it? NIke+ andnon-=nike + people alike?

Keyboard still broken.
I plan to go out for a nice little jaunt this weekend. Havent got out since GNR. I amthinking an easy 4-5 miles.

Oh - a question to those of you who Know Stuff About Running. If I have no race to aim for, I thinking a need a getting faster plan. So how do I go about doing that? It obviously isn't as simple as just running faster......I fear it is tempo running....

Wallace · 25/09/2009 20:48

popsy - before I forget you asked about shoes that are wider across the front? Try Saucony or Brooks. I love my Saucony Grids and they were only £40

As for the getting faster - that's where the running club comes in...

You need to do tempo runs, intervals, fartlek, paalauf etc Oh, and of course hill training ...

I would be up for that 10k thging. I might even try to resurrect my nike plus sensor.

angelene · 25/09/2009 20:55

Hi all

I still haven't done any running but fingers crossed my knees seem OK and my cold has cleared up. I'm starting to get nervous now for Sunday's race - it will be 30% further than I've run and at least 20 minutes longer. Realistically I know I can do it because once I settle into my rhythm I feel fine but I'm rather daunted, especially with the enforced break in training.

Popsy the Nike+ thing sounds interesting, I will see how I go on Sunday. I must say that the Nike+ has been a brilliant tool, I find it really motivating.

WRT when you train, I go out in the evening and I've had to change my route - the cycle path I go on is heavily tree lined and very dark and spooky - there are bats around and everything! Can't be doing with that so I'm now running around residential areas.

DH is training for the Cardiff half marathon and he's been getting up at 5.30 and doing 10 miles first thing - I'm very as he gets to watch the sun come up over the valleys!

Good luck with your weekend runs everyone, one day I hope to be talking in terms of '8 or 9 miles' rather than the same number of kilometers!

popsycal · 25/09/2009 20:59

ihave brooks already. Maybe they are just on their last legs (haha!!) and I ought to have cut my toe nails will find you a link to nike plus thing

realy reaallllly want to join arunning club but days all wrong

fishie · 25/09/2009 21:04

i've got mizuno for my flippers, they are better than sauconys of which i had to have mens. i have narrow heels too.

i run in the woods / big park and find that sticking to a vague timetable and sort of route means that i see lots of the same people and that makes me feel safe, we say good morning or whatever and i know they'd probably come if i screamed. i don't go some places if i go before 7am and never off road in the dark.
