have to try for a 5.5 miler tomorrow evening......
scary stuff for me

fishie · 20/06/2009 20:54

hope it goes well popsy. i usually run better in mornings although have to do at least 2 evenings a week.

peachsmuggler · 20/06/2009 21:51

yes, best of british popsy! very impressed with your 5k time!

Did 7 miles today for first time since my half marathon and was really nice. Slowed down pace as was reading my long run pace should be 11 min mile (for the pace I am trying to do for my 10k). Ended up doing 10.15 min miles as finding it weird to run any slower but was a lovely run and not too hot.

Am now going to eat a chocolate eclair. Huzzah!

Wallace · 21/06/2009 06:49

good time, popsycal!

just noticed badgermonkey's 6 mile time - fast!

Twink · 21/06/2009 09:46

Some cracking efforts here, well done!

I can finally hold my head up and post on this thread cos I've just got back from a run The first in at least a fortnight (although I've been doing other stuff) and I'm dead chuffed to discover it was just over 6 miles. Lovely run, good company, mostly on footpaths, bridleways and towpath so now feel quite smug and am off to eat a huge bowl of muesli.

Have a good week all!

sfxmum · 21/06/2009 10:27

hello all

lovely to see the fantastic times and most of all the enjoyment

managed to do 3miles yesterday and today all over 30min but under 35 I am old

have Race for life thingy next Sunday but am hoping to move on to 10k, just feel like I need some sort of race to make it official first, like I am a proper runner or something
even though it is all pink and fluffy
my family are paying good money to see me wearing pink, this seem to be the main attraction

have a good week all

badgermonkey · 21/06/2009 11:04

Well done on your good runs, Twink and sfxmum! I am quite jealous of Twink's towpaths, even though I run by the sea. The coast is all well and good but it is very windy sometimes...

I'm doing Race for Life too - I don't even own any pink running gear, although I feel like maybe I should get some . I saw in someone's Facebook photos people doing a "jolly" group warm-up thing before RfL which does not seem like my sort of thing at all - would much rather skulk around the edges on my own.

Had a craptacular run on Friday, only went out for three miles but came back after two with a stitch from hell. Made me very worried about my scheduled 9 miles today so I did it fairly slowly and came in at 86 mins, which is OK. DH had texted me to tell me he'd done his 9 miles with a friend in 82 mins so I would have quite liked to have beaten him, but it was and lovely comfortable pace and I didn't even get out of breath once , which was my objective really. I can also testify that Maximo Park and the Kaiser Chiefs are great running tunes!

sfxmum · 21/06/2009 11:13

shall be skulking around the edge too LOL
am dreading the choice of music being pumped out 'to motivate' but I suppose I must get into the spirit of things

OP posts:
badgermonkey · 21/06/2009 11:21

Maybe there should be an antisocial Run for Life where you don't have to make eye contact with anyone else and you just all line up in silence without any jollying, group activities or 'inspirational' music. And there's nobody wearing fairy wings.

Possibly this is called a real 5k! Oh well, we all have to start somewhere. I'm looking forward to doing an actual race though, Girls Aloud on the PA system or not...(god, I just thought, it's women-only, I bet we get referred to as 'girls' sometime during proceedings!)

sfxmum · 21/06/2009 11:26

yes I feel your pain and dh keeps teasing me mercilessly, I thought I would do my first race in a non threatening environment just to get a feel although I always though racing was not for me, still raising money for a good cause
and dd will be there cheering me on

popsycal · 21/06/2009 11:46

can i recommend indie soup runner podcasts for those ex-indie kids amongst us

badgermonkey · 21/06/2009 12:31

Ooh, good rec, thanks for that!

racmac · 21/06/2009 12:55

Can i join the runners group now - I did race for life last week and came in at 26.10mins so really chuffed.

I would possibly have done better if all the walkers didnt keep getting in my way!

Now aiming for a 6 miler in few weeks time.

19fran76 · 21/06/2009 18:46

Hello everyone! Please join us with immediate effect racmac & well done on your excellent time Was it all just as cute & group hug in nature as sfxmum & badgermonkey fear? Girls (), I would love to hear your feedback about your first time in a race environment afterwards (however pink). I admit that the thought makes me feel a bit anxious. (I had wondered about a 5k as a gentle intro too but have decided to go for a 10k). Anti-social races seem the way forward. I love a bit of solitude, me .Let's have it on record that I would be thrilled to politely but firmly ignore any one of you should the opportunity arise. .

Good luck to you all

Went on a 5 mile run today. I don't enjoy running that much when it's warm with no shade but I told myself to get used to it as the forecast for week is good. Did the route in 40 minutes which consoled me somewhat

I second sfxmum in enjoying the posts as they roll in - B.T.W. sfx that article was magical wasn't it? Thanks for linking to it.

racmac · 21/06/2009 19:35

Thanks 19fran76 - it was a good intro but looking forward to doing some "proper" races! Everyone was friendly - the warm up was not really my thing and people kept getting in my way when i was running - the walkers would not move but luckily i was behind another lady who kept shouting "excuse me" very loudly and they moved although some of them with lots of grumbling

There was lots of hugging and hand holding and lots and lots of pink but i kept out of that but.

Thinking of doing the 10k in Sept and thinking that will get rid of some of the walkers

popsycal · 21/06/2009 19:47

racmac - i got hooked via race for life and subsequent 10k (says popsy clutching her secnd beer and posrtponing the 5.5 mile run til tomorrow mornig....)

I just wanted to ask aswell.

What is the etiqueete wrt ipods on proper 10k?
I did cancer research 10k in sept 2007 and I think I would have been ok withthe ipod for that
but this is a bupa great run 10k (must must must ring tomorrow to see where my 'pack' is...) - can I get away with it?

It is in Sunderland though - so anything goes, I gues

racmac · 23/06/2009 06:38

At the race for life people were wearing ipods etc - my ear phones kept bloody falling out so i gave up!

hatwoman · 23/06/2009 10:16

I've done an 8-miler a couple of times and not many people were wearing ipods - but some were and I don;t think they were getting any snooty looks. if you want to wear it I would. but a race is so different from normal runs that I enjoy being without it - I get a lift from the other people and I feel more part of it without the music.

MoshiMoshi · 23/06/2009 20:47

Hello all. Not been here for a while as renovations and talks about DS's 7+ choices have taken up my time. Still not quite got out for that First Run (the one that kick-starts the routine, as opposed to the one that means to but never manages to be followed by another very soon after) but I console myself with my lovely now 2 month old DD3. When DS's school has broken up for the summer hols, there will be even less likelihood of running so I had better work out how to do it with my three DDs - two in a buggy and one on her scooter? (Question: does bribing a 4 year old to scoot at least 3 miles amount to child abuse?)

Glad to see you all running in this lovely weather. And Good Luck, sfx in your very pink and very girlie Race For Life 5K! I did the one in Battersea and Hampstead many moons ago and can confirm that the Battersea one had far more serious runners as it is regarded as a good 5K race venue for some reason. The Hampstead one was far more pink and may explain why I managed to come 4th (I don't think I even managed in the top 10 at Battersea!) It was the morning after a hen night and I was feeling quite ropey so I don't remember much other than all of that pink...

MoshiMoshi · 23/06/2009 20:51

PS fran, you may have to rethink the idea of solitude when racing. After training on your own, it comes as quite a shock to hear other runners breathing down your neck and if you manage a good pace, you will find those "other runners" are men who refuse to be outpaced by one of the wimmin!

PPS twink - continuing to send you and your OH positive vibes.

MrsWednesday · 23/06/2009 21:38

I'll creep back in if that's ok, even though I haven't been doing much running recently

Went for 6 miles on Sunday, which was hard and hot and seemed to aggrevate my hip too, but have skived off running club tonight and decided to have a beer with DH in the garden instead.

I've foolishly committed to doing a 10 mile 'race' on 12th July so need to improve my lifestyle (put that beer down for starters!) and get back into my proper running routine.

Good luck on Sunday sfxmum!

Did you get your pack sorted popsycal?

Themaster, when's your half marathon?

Great time Wallace!

Hatwoman, what's the difference between fell running shoes and normal trainers? My running club does a lot of cross-country races and I'm a bit tempted to have a go but only have normal running shoes.

Also sending positive vibes to the amazing Twink family.x

hatwoman · 23/06/2009 23:15

mrsW - I've been doing fell running in normal road trainers for the last 6 months - and to be honest have never felt it mattered. but when I did a race I realised I was very slow downhill - so I wondered if they might help - and I think they do a bit. as far as I can see they have better grips, and are a bit more sturdy and supportive. and because I doubt I'll do long distances in them I reckoned I could get away with something a tiny bit smaller - which makes them a bit "neater" ie a bit nippier/easier to place over rough ground. they have less cushioning though. apparently there are two types - truly fell only - and ones like the ones I got which are cushioned enough for road as well.
