hello all

welcome lechuga

athene can't quite help with query regarding foot support I just got fitted at Up&Running and highly recommend them, local shops tend to be good less biased

went for 3miles this morning earlier than usual but grateful for that it is quite warm now

popsy about plans I think they really work and gives you something to work towards at present I am just chugging along but I know if I am to improve and go further I shall have to stick to a plan

hi everyone. I haven't been on this thread for yonks. good to see you're all still here and all still running. after the marathon I took it down a peg or two. unsuprisingly! I did a fell race a couple of weeks ago - 5 miles and a total climb of 900 feet. all a bit mad tbh - full of real enthusiasts. dd sat on the finish line and took great delight in telling I came 34th out of 38 women (fell races tend to attract about 200 people max - most of them men). I might do another on Thursday - but depends on juggling some childcare things. (fell races also very relaxed - turn up and register on the day.) hope everyone's ok.

liath · 17/06/2009 09:46

The fell racing sounds fun, hatwoman. I'd love to get into that side of things.

Unfortunately no running here, my tendonitis is a lot better but not right so needs more rehab. Have been doing a lot of reading and it looks like barefoot running would be a good way to get back running and in the course of my research I had a bit of a giggle at these www.vibramfivefingers.com/. DH says under no circumstances am I allowed to buy a pair of Hobbit feet which of course makes me want a pair .

hatwoman · 17/06/2009 11:49

look: all men and all in shorts and vests I love this photo

sfxmum · 17/06/2009 11:59

that looks quite mad glad you enjoyed it
no running for me today but will probably go twice tomorrow

peachsmuggler · 17/06/2009 12:45

liath you MUST get the hobbit feet. They're fantastic!

Well done hatwoman - that all looks pretty hardcore, you clearly love a challenge!

Am doing fartlek tonight so vaguely looking forward to it, then DP and I are going out to the pub. Hurrah!

OrmIrian · 17/06/2009 13:02

Hi all,

back in the land of the living again after 2 weeks of struggling. Restarted a low-carb diet and ran out of energy! Completely. This always happens but this was a killer - I went from doing 11 miles to doing 4 (with freqent stops) and feeling like death. I persevered for nearly 2 weeks then knocked it on the head and within days was running much easier again. I'd rather be fat and fit than thin and dying on my feet.

fishie · 17/06/2009 15:42

had a couple of days off after a very grotty run on sunday. ds has chickenpox too and i am strangely lethargic with all this houseboundness. 10k this morning has revived me though.

sfxmum · 17/06/2009 15:49

Orm I am supposed to watch carbs mostly because of my PCOS it is the only way to keep it under control But I don't go too low Atkins like I just try to make sure they are complex carbs and never (or mostly) 'unopposed' meaning whenever there is a carb there is lean protein too
apple with cheese and so on, does that make sense?

OP posts:
OrmIrian · 17/06/2009 16:13

I tend to eat like that normally SFX. Low-GI rather than low-carb but this time I went down to less than 20g a day. When I did it before I wasn't running - I was going to the gym but it wasn't an hour plus of constant exertion like a run.

I am interested to hear that you use lc to help with PCOS. I had heard this before but never 'met' anyone who actually does this. Does it help?

sfxmum · 17/06/2009 16:30

I don't really count so I guess I am more low GI than seriously low carbing mostly because I find that unsustainable on the long run
I eat porridge for breakfast most days and try to control/limit how much and what kind of carbs I eat at other meals

I find it helps curb appetite/ regulate blood sugar and so on,
as for helping with other PCOS symptoms I find that and exercise seem to help with regulating mood and appetite too. I conceive dd when I was 35 then was following these principles.
before that weight control was a problem and had 3mc, since dd, weight became a problem again and 2mc followed, am hoping it is not the end
many of the usual symptoms seem to be under control but then there is my age.

am not trying to be skinny just not my body type anyway

sorry I went on a bit there

Loved your photos hatwoman, I was running up a short but steep hill last night mentally trying to multiply it into fell climbing proportions in my minds eye. It was mind boggling Quite heroic IMHO. I would love to build enough fitness to try it. Just once, for the experience, you understand

Liath those hobbit feet are something else. Has anyone ever seen them in action?? That would be mesmerising.

Went for a 4 mile run Sunday & 8 miles last night. Last night was particularly satisfying. I had stuff on my mind setting out & the run blew it all away on a lovely sunny evening with a cool breeze .

Welcome back Orm.

sfxmum · 18/06/2009 11:35

did I mention I bought some Brooks shoes in the sale? they are really comfy
run a bit this morning as I am meeting a friend this evening and we will be running a couple of miles together

fran love that feeling of settling this in the head while running all made so much nicer in this weather

Wallace · 18/06/2009 11:51

Love the photos, hatwoman. I have said I will do a hill run this year...

I did a jogscotland 5k event last night. I did it in 24:58 (by my watch) which is 3 minutes faster than the same event last year, and more than a minute quicker than my running club time trial PB!

hatwoman · 18/06/2009 12:16

well done Wallace - it's great when you see yourself improve.

someone said I liked a challenge...am (half)wondering whether to do this next year It's 21 miles and hilly. I chickened out this year as, despite the marathon training, I didn't feel fit enough. the downside about doing it is that the training would basically be the same as training for a marathon - and my feet would end up in the same sorry state - not sure I could face all that again. I'll continue to ponder...no need to decide now.

peachsmuggler · 18/06/2009 13:51

good god wallace, that's a fine time. I can't imagine how fast you must have been going, like the wind!!!

I did 40 mins fartlek last night which was really good fun, though I did have to go to the park for a poo in the middle of it. In the park toilets I should say!

Was running up the pavement of a busy road and feeling like superman overtaking cars (they were in a bit of a traffic jam though )

Wallace · 18/06/2009 14:00

go on, hatwoman - you know you want too

peach - lol at poo whilst doing fartlek

I really did push myself to get that time, I think that is the first time I have made myself leave my comfort zone in a race

Wallace · 18/06/2009 16:54

My chip time was 24:57 (my watch was pretty accurate then )

Overall I was 43rd out of 214 and I was the 16th female out of 164

I was only just over 4 minutes off the winning lady's time. Give me a couple of years and I'll be there

hatwoman · 18/06/2009 18:19

hi all - I'm off to do another fell race tonight. not 21 miles. just the 5. I was in the bottom 10 per cent last time. but now I have the super weapon of a pair of proper fell running shoes. so I might make it to into the bottom 11 per cent .

I make your race time to be equivalent to 8-minute miles wallace - good effort!

19fran76 · 18/06/2009 18:35

Bloomin' well done Wallace. You should be most chuffed with yourself

Peachsmuggler, what a shocker of an admission . Wonder who'll trump that?

Do it Hatwoman, sounds fabulous from the comfort of my armchair. I'd love to sit here & hear all about afterwards

badgermonkey · 18/06/2009 19:19

Just went out for a 6-miler after a really annoying day at work, on my own with my music on. I decided not to check my time as I went, just go at my own pace, and when I got back I found it was 53 minutes, which I was really REALLY pleased with! Even more so when I did it superaccurately on gmaps pedometer and it came out at 6.07 miles!

Didn't have to stop for a poo, though

popsycal · 18/06/2009 19:32

ca i just ask
i have a 10k on 12th july and am waiting for my number and chip...cant find a contact in the bupa site

is this normal?

hatwoman · 19/06/2009 19:12

can't help you tehre popsycal - sorry.

I did my second fell race yesterday. it was...interesting. I ended up knee deep in mud (literally) - I thought I was going to lose one of my brand new shoes. and then the stream you have to cross had become a river. and the river you have to cross was a veritable torrent. which was quite good because it washed all the mud off.

I'm coming to the conclusion that fell running is a really bizarre hobby. It's all competitive blokes who really like getting very muddy.

but I think I might be hooked. In a slightly perverse way.

Wallace · 19/06/2009 19:57

Sounds like good clean dirty fun, hatwoman

Can't help, popsy, sorry

19fran76 · 19/06/2009 21:51

Oh Hatwoman, I just knew your continuing adventures would make good copy. Vive the fell running eccentricity. Popsycal, I don't know either, sorry to say.

Badgermonkey that is pleasing. I ran 6 miles tonight & was 1 minute slower than you but I'll live with that . For now.
