hatwoman · 23/06/2009 23:18

these are the ones I got - but thankfully not in this colour

MrsWednesday · 24/06/2009 09:50

Oh I see, it all becomes clear. Thanks!

Will probably just get some new normal trainers first then save up for some of those later.

19fran76 · 24/06/2009 10:11

Hello Mrs Wednesday*. Are you going to be a hard as nails fell runner too?

MoshiMoshi, you're right a re-think will be required . I fear turning all self-conscious on myself & becoming somewhat discombobulated . Disconcerting a few men sounds fun though . I will redouble my efforts to become speedy.

Hope that you can resolve the complex logistics of running in your household. You do sound resourceful

I ran 8 miles last night & averaged 8 minute miles. I may plot a slightly longer route for the weekend.

Themasterandmargaritas · 24/06/2009 10:26

Hi all

I lost you all for a bit, rl sort of came and took over so will try and catch up later.

My big half is on Saturday, gulp. I did my last 5k on Monday and a heavy yoga session afterwards. I am quite nervous already, especially because we have to camp the night before. We have ditched the dc onto various unsuspecting friends for the night.

It's probably a bit cheeky of me but if anyone feels like sponsoring me you are welcome to donate here No pressure though.

hatwoman · 24/06/2009 12:44

fran - 8 minutes miles for 8 miles? (iyswim) that's brilliant. you're making me want to ditch the fells and work on my speed. (I only do hills because it disguises just how slow I am/gives me an excuse)

badgermonkey · 24/06/2009 19:35

Wow, I am suitably impressed and awed of 8-min miles for miles!

I did 7 miles in 61 minutes today but I don't think I could have gone one bit faster. It was full of annoyances, too, like my hair came out of its bun and I had to faff with clips while running, then I was trying to do speedwork with a stopwatch but added up wrong so ended up doing a mile at a minute faster pace than I should have, nearly killed myself and had to walk for five minutes, then the headphones of my phone that I listen to music on started going all crackly and I had to untangle myself from them while running, then someone texted me and I was too curious not to read it, then loads of people were pulling out of driveways and pretending not to see me...well, it's miracle I got home alive, and not only that, so did everyone else

hatwoman · 24/06/2009 21:02

oh badgermonkey - I know exactly the kind of run you mean - they drive me mad! I can add in to the mix annoying bra-straps, irritating socks, snotty nose, errant dog, dog lead falling round my knees (from its place round my waist) - particular fun that one, and gates that won't open.

sfxmum · 25/06/2009 09:48

hello all

fran < respect>

mrsW thanks

master - good luck

badger I run in towpaths so my biggest annoyance are tourists strolling around totally ignoring me even though they see me coming

about my race apparently they let out the runners first then the joggers then the walkers well I have been doing rubbish times for 5K but think will chance coming last on the runners
have what looks suspiciously like hay fever never had it before, sore throat stinging eyes sore itchy nose -hate it

sfxmum · 25/06/2009 09:51

moshi thanks and I am trying to get my 4yrs old to ride her bike competently so she can go along with me, if I ever have another baby I am getting a jogging stroller

hope you manage to get it sorted

OP posts:
MoshiMoshi · 25/06/2009 12:27

sfx - I find my 6 and 4 year old can scoot quite quickly and for a reasonable length of time (with the right motivation). Does your 4 year old scoot at all? I have this sneaking suspicion that until they get competent on bikes, scooting may be easier for them initially...

sfxmum · 25/06/2009 13:27

moshi funnily she seems more confident on the bike than the scooter and on the tow-path she is probably better off on the bike with stabilisers
I see quite a few parents using this strategy at the weekend and on holidays

moshi moshi - I bought one of those food pots I told you about - they are great!

I di mention them, didnt i??

Wallace · 26/06/2009 21:14

good luck master - you will love it

Twink · 26/06/2009 21:58

Good luck Master, hope you have a blinder!

hatwoman · 26/06/2009 23:37

good luck for Saturday master - come and tell us how it went.

anyone else here done a marathon? I'm finding post marathon running hard - psychologically hard. always in the past Ive run to get fitter, to improve - nearly always with a race/target in mind. now - because I've dropped from 30-odd miles a week to about 15 - I'm feeling less fit with every run. it's really dis-heartening. I know that I'm running to maintain a certain level of fitness, and I know that if I do keep it up then I could work towards improving my times on shorter races. but it still feels, well, weird. anyone else experienced this?

MrsWednesday · 27/06/2009 00:17

Hope all goes well tomorrow MasterM!

Wallace · 27/06/2009 22:37

hatwoman - ot dome a marathon but know what you mean about having a target.

Have you tried increasing the speed/intensity of your sessions instead of the length? [probable teaching grandmother to suck eggs emoticon]

Wallace · 27/06/2009 22:40

sorry about typos - typing in the almost dark on black keyboard

can't wait for master to update us on how she did!

Themasterandmargaritas · 28/06/2009 08:18

Thanks for all your wishes. Well what an experience. Four hour car drive to get to the conservancy, a night of camping with about 2,000 people camping all together, freezing cold night and then up before light. We all set off at 7.15 and the sun was blazing already. Then it was amazing, take the picture of an African setting in your mind, huge open plains, white grasses surrounded by mountains in the distance, blazing, blazing sun and a trail of people all running off into the distance like a huge long snake! We ran along a track which was made of fine mud like sand and there was only space for 3 at a time so it meant a lot of overtaking on the soft bits in the middle and very very dusty. Overhead there were 3 or 4 helicopters buzzing around making sure there were no ellies, rhinos or lions nearby. It was all going swimmingly for The Master until k 16, then my knee decided it had had enough of the terrain and gave up. So I ran/walked the last 5k. In total it took me 2hrs 32. I was so disappointed but it was an experience and now I shall have to go back next year to try and do better. It was so damn hot and probably the hardest thing I have done in my life, apparently it is one of the 10 most difficult marathons in the world.

liath · 28/06/2009 08:25

Wow! Sorry your knee gave out but that does sound a hell of an experience. I guess having helicopter checking for nearby lions isn't something one experiences on an average run .

sfxmum · 28/06/2009 15:23

master wow that sounds amazing, sorry about your knee

did my first 5k today amidst the pinkness, despite that it was fun, very hot but went quickly, think may have the bug now and thinking about a proper longer race

hope everyone is well happy running

OP posts:
hatwoman · 28/06/2009 18:40

Hi wallace - sounds great - sorry about your knee - but you still finished. well done. do you mind me asking which race it was?

popsycal · 28/06/2009 19:46

some good running

i did 5.5 miles in 54:01 mins - it was very hot, though i suspect the master wins on hotness!!!

i had a 2 min walk after 3.5 miles and still my 'average' pace was 9:48 mins/mile

actually i have a wquestion for thosewho run longer distances....

i am aiming for a 10k in 2 weeks time - probably with a tactical 2 min walk around the 4 mile mark as i think i will be quicker that way than trying to run it all

i am noticing that my first 2 miles are around 8:30-9 mins/per mile, mmiles 3 and 4 are around 9-9;30 ins per mile and anything more is 9:30-10 min miles.

Should II try to slow down for the first few miles to maintain a uniform pace??? feels very very odd doing a 10 min/mile for first few miles

popsycal · 28/06/2009 19:48

hatwoman - my (non-experienced) advice would be to join a running club

Wallace · 28/06/2009 20:07

Sounds fantastic - makes me long to go back to Africa. Well done you!
