Hi Kittywise, I wish to run 10k with no walking breaks, my 8 mile run had a few walked bits to it!

MoshiMoshi I'm sure that it is mainly psychological at this stage. I think you're right about distance, 5k seems a short distance now whereas the road seemed to yawn ahead of me when I first began running. Hopefully 10k will become a walk in the park compared to longer runs as I build up some more distance .

Peachsmuggler, glad you had some happy running, look at you scoring a pb in this heat.

Hello Ritameter, the title to your link looks ominous. I shall scare myself silly reading it shortly.

19fran76 · 02/06/2009 20:09

Oooh crossed posts.... thanks Peachsmuggler. Being a newbie I had no idea about where my pace was relative to the rest of the running world so it's been reassuring/pleasantly surprising getting feedback.
I too have been entertaining fantasies of running shorts. Is it a definite no then? I haven't tried any on yet. I was hoping some baggies might pass muster

peachsmuggler · 02/06/2009 20:21

Weeeeelll...they were very comfy and can imagine they would be great to run in, but just the thought of someone seeing my arse going along the street in them made me do a Sideshow Bob style shudder.

Am currently wearing (to run that is, not right now) 3/4 length loose-ish trousers, which are not for running, but which are very light and comfy so think I will stick to them. Also the ones in the shop were very expensive (£35 for cheapest!!!) so think it has to be a definite no for now. At least until I have attained a bottom like Kylie

19fran76 · 02/06/2009 21:52

Well Peachsmuggler, I was nodding along to yours shorts critque, empathising fully or so I thought 'til I realised that I let the world see my arse in running tights.

Still, in terms of arse oneupmanship you trump me in hoping to attain an arse like Kylie. That is a physiological impossibility for me, so it's good that I'm reconciled with my imperfections . Shorts ahoy!

(P.S. I was eyeing some longer length Adidas lovelies on ebay the other week £12ish)

AtheneNoctua · 03/06/2009 09:29

Hi everyone. Does anyone know of an online place to map a route? I'm in Aberdeen and really need to get of the hotel at night (or maybe early morning). So I want to map a 3-5 mile route from around Holburn Junction / Union Street.

Thanks.

PS You are all much better runners than I am. [blush)

However, I do have the advantage of it not being too hot in Aberdeen.

19fran76 · 03/06/2009 09:38

Mapmyrun is free & covers everywhere.

AtheneNoctua · 03/06/2009 10:09

Thanks.

sfxmum · 03/06/2009 10:11

hello all brief post

no running in short for me not so much an arse problem as a leg problem but who know I always said I would never wear running tights

btw mapmyrun uk has changed to mapometer.com

hope everyone is well, I managed my usual 3miles but could no go any further the wound in my foot is still very open and sore so best leave it for a little while to heal

peachsmuggler · 03/06/2009 10:19

LOL at attainability of Kylie-esque arse. fran - I could sooner get to the moon, as attain an arse like hers. Am certain than one of my cheeks is as big as the whole of hers....ah well. Will just have to concentrate on easier goals, like doing a 10k in less than an hour.

sfx very concerned about your paw. Sounds pretty painful. Think you should put your feet up lady!

sfxmum · 03/06/2009 10:23

am touched peachy it is just a back of foot thing where the skin sort of came away I will rest until Saturday and get better padding in the meantime

AtheneNoctua · 03/06/2009 11:38

Oh, I went to mapmyrun.com and I think it's fab. I have just worked out I can go from hotel up roung the golf course and back down the beach / esplanade for about 4 miles. Although I'm a tad sceptical about the whole idea of an "esplanade" in Aberdeen.

I don't suppose anyone else is in Aberdeen?????

SFX, I recommend a product called neosporin for quick heeling of any cuts/scapes, missing skin (ouch). It is very American and hard to find over here, but you can get it on ebay. It's not a miracle worker but does speed up the heeling a bit.

MoshiMoshi · 03/06/2009 11:57

sfx- Compeed is good for blisters. It acts like a second skin and is very effective.

All this talk of running attire inspired me to look for mine (two pairs flappy running shorts, one pair Capri pants, one pair compression tights, three pair loose wicking leggings, two pairs fitted lycra shorts for gym work and two pairs tri shorts and that is only stuff for my bottom half!) and I ended up spring cleaning my wardrobe and keeping only the stuff I wear/am likely to wear once I have zapped my baby fat. It feels reeaallly good to have done that so thanks for the motivation!

HarrogateMum · 03/06/2009 13:24

peachsmuggler, its my dream to do a 10k in under an hour....I have done two proper ones, the first one after training all summer for it, did it in 1 hour and just under 2 mins, the next one in the autumn, did no training and it killed me to do it in an hour and 6 minutes!

I am doing the Jane Tomlinson York 10k on 2nd August so thats my goal, under an hour! Even if its 59:59!

Is anyone else on here doing the York one?

sfxmum · 03/06/2009 13:44

Thanks moshi and athene, did not realise you were up there

I admire the goal of 10K under 1hr but don't think it will ever happen for me

OP posts:
AtheneNoctua · 03/06/2009 14:45

I'm only here Tues-Fri, in London for the weekends.

futurity · 03/06/2009 17:27

I would love to run 10K in under an hour..closest I have got is 1 hour and 1 min...so the goal does look like it is in reach but would still need to increase my per mile rate by quite a bit to achieve it I think. Doing a 5K in a few weeks so will start by getting that under 30 mins hopefully

popsycal · 03/06/2009 18:48

moshimooshi - i saw something tofday and tought of you

made by 'munchkin'

MoshiMoshi · 03/06/2009 19:33

sfx not up north myself though I was at uni at York many moons ago. I am in London.

popsy thanks for the thought! 'tis very kind of you. Genius idea!

liath · 03/06/2009 19:59

Argh, don't think I'll be running for a bit. I was so relieved that sunday's relay hadn't seemed to aggravate my tendonitis too much, then went for a walk round Arthur's Seat with the kids yesterday and by the end was in agony . Still blooming sore today so I'll need to rest it for a good while I expect .

I'd second compeeds, they are fantastic things.

fishie · 03/06/2009 20:15

i am experimenting with slightly shorter but daily runs. day 3 here and still ok - total of 24k and would normally be 21k with a rest on day 2. has anyone else tried this? i just don't have time to do longer runs every other day.

MoshiMoshi · 03/06/2009 20:24

liath I really sympathise with your tendonitis as I suffered with ankle tendonitis last year and had to race with it. I found an amazing physiotherapist who helped get rid of it though! Have you sought treatment for it?

liath · 03/06/2009 20:31

I've been to a physio, moshi (though that was before it got so much worse) & have a load of exercises downloaded from the net. How long did you take to recover? I'm supposed to be doing a 20 mile hill race in a month (thank goodness opted to walk it rather than run)....

sfxmum · 03/06/2009 20:37

liath sympathies regarding injury and wishing speedy recovery

moshi I am in London too, maybe you menat someone else?

athene that must be tiring hope the logistics

LovelyRitaMeterMaid · 03/06/2009 22:44

When were you at York moshimoshi? I was there 94-97.
