just to house the runners

morning all. i'm with you on running making me a better person sfx - i consider it a public service making sure i make time to run but owie at your flappy feet

good luck to anyone racing today. they were setting up for something in the park today and i can't say i envy anyone doing it - it was already too hot at 8 o'clock.

don't be too despondent kitty, i bet it won't take as long as you fear to get back into the swing of things. after my little break this week and a terrible run last time out, plus the heat, i was expecting a washout this morning but it turned into a belter.

think i was mostly carried along an a wave of nostalgia, listening to the levellers and the house of love i felt i was going at my usual pace or a little slower, but it turned out i was doing half a minute a mile or so quicker. i was also reminded of how much is in your head when i stopped after an hour or so as i was starting to get tired and had planned to take it easy but then a cracking song came on and i did an extra half mile at 9mm (my "fast" 5k pace )

hope everyone else has the running fairy today too, and those that can't get out can still enjoy the sun.

HarrogateMum · 31/05/2009 14:50

Managed 4.3 miles in 41mins 58 secs so hopefully improving...it was too hot though even at 7.30am! God knows what running in it now would be like, I am scorching!

kittywise · 31/05/2009 15:56

Thanks MF!! I might try tomorrow

liath · 31/05/2009 22:15

Thanks for the good wishes, folks. It was HOT running today and I really felt for people doing the full marathon. I can't get my time off the website yet but think I did 5.4 miles in 50 minute or so, which I'm happy with considering the heat and knackered ankle. As a team we've raised over £600 for cystic fibrosis (my lovely SIL has CF) and it's given DH and myself a huge boost to have had something to get fit for.

I think I'll need to rest my ankle for 2 or 3 weeks but DH is well and truly bitten by the running bug and talking about doing triathlons and us going for a half marathon sometime .

sfxmum · 31/05/2009 22:21

oh well done liath slippery slope for for your dh obviously

I managed to run 3 miles today a bit gingerly as foot still sore despite dressing I put on.

have a good week all

Well done liath - Great time!

I haven't run since Wednesday. Was away for the weekend and although we got back late afternoon yesterday, I was sooooooo tired and so didn't do my planned 4 miles. Shame, as was looking forward to nice easy run. As it is, tonight I need to do intervals in the intense heat. Hmmmm. I shall approach it, like you all do your hills and embrace the pain!

SheherazadetheGoat · 01/06/2009 10:04

fantastic liath - i was thinking about you yesterday, it was so bloody hot.

OrmIrian · 01/06/2009 11:38

Hot ! Hot? It's outrageous. Bloody furrin weather

I went running at 7.30 am and it was roasting even then. But very lovely as long as I kept in the shade. Trouble was I was running along the Somerset Levels and there tends to be quite a lot of long straight roads without trees.... I did 9 miles and then drank about 2 pints of water straight off.

kittywise · 01/06/2009 18:45

Well I did my first 'run' in over 2 weeks this morning. I only managed 25 mins, just shy of three miles. I was so knackered, my chest was rattling and wheezing away, snot coming out almost constantly (TMI sorry ). but at least I got out, even if it was bleeding hot!!!

Wallace · 01/06/2009 21:19

Well done liath!

Come and do the Aviemore Half Marathon in October with me

popsycal · 01/06/2009 21:34

i wanted to go out today but the cmbination of the heat and my hideous ear infection still hanging on made me leave it another day...

liath · 01/06/2009 22:32

kittywise, I'm sure all that snot is better out than in .

Wallace, that half marathon looks great. DH fairly pricked his ears up when I mentioned it. I wonder if we could pursuade my parents to take a Highland holiday with us and kindly watch the kids while we run! TBH after yesterday's experience of running on hot roads, dodging your way around other runners not to mention their stinky farts I'd far rather do more rural events.

kittywise · 01/06/2009 22:50

stinky farts?

MrsWednesday · 01/06/2009 23:06

No running for me either, too busy defrosting the freezer [joy] and packing boxes.

Twink, I'm sorry things are tough for you at home. Hope you can get a bit of headspace when you go for a run at least.

Back when I'm reconnected to the internet (bit worried about how I'll manage without it for the next couple of weeks ).

19fran76 · 01/06/2009 23:10

Hadn't thought about being caught downwind of stinky farts if I enter a race. Yuck. Important to know the unpleasant truth. Congratulations on your time liath, especially in the heat. I ran past a Waste Water Treatment Plant tonight. I will now consider that preparation.

Kittywise & Popsycal, I hope the worst horrors of your illnesses are behind you & that you are feeling better.

Did you get cozy with the pain Peachsmuggler?

I did 8 miles tonight for the first time & averaged a 9mm. Enjoyed doing a different route, a few hills needed befriending but they gave some good views in return. Hopefully, this will help towards my current aim of doing a continuous 10k. It was cooling down nicely outside by the time I got back.

rantothehills · 02/06/2009 10:57

oh, stinky farts... swallowed a fly this morning, truly horrible nearly coughed my guts up and gave up on my run!

Any ideas on how to bust more fat? Am fairly slim but got stubborn pockets of fat around bum/upper thighs still not happy with. Been running about 7 months now average about 25 miles a week so not much room to up this. Thought I'd magically be super-toned all over after all this hard work but seem to have plateaued somewhat and still not got the hard body of my dreams

or maybe now I'm in my late 30s this is no longer possible? Any thoughts?

fishie · 02/06/2009 11:05

hello all. very sorry to hear about mrtwink, hope the chemo is going ok. fab long run m&m.

i got up at 5.45am and did 7k this morning! it was pretty good, although too short, i needed to leave for work at 7am. def the way to beat hot weather.

rantothehills i have come to conclusion than fatness is 80% diet, 20% exercise. we just have to eat less (or drink less wine in my case)

OrmIrian · 02/06/2009 12:34

Is anyone else really struggling in the heat? I don't mean thinking 'phew what a scorcher!' whilst mopping the brow. I mean legs like lead, everything feel heavy. I kept having to stop last night and rest. I don't remember the heat affecting me like that before - usually I just feel unpleasantly hot and sweaty.

popsycal · 02/06/2009 12:39

i am hpoing to do 4.5 miles toight when it cools down......

however ear still not right but I otherwise feel 'well'

it will be a run/walk combination tho.

Am worrying i am not going to get to my continuous 10k bu
y 12th \July. May have to opt for a tactial short walk half way

LovelyRitaMeterMaid · 02/06/2009 12:43

Can I poke my head around this doorway and one day join in? Am on the couch to 5k thread and am up to about week 7. Am doing about 25 min about three times a week now and can do abut 11.2 min/mile.

How do I get quicker? My feet seem to get heavier and heavier

MoshiMoshi · 02/06/2009 12:57

rant - I agree that diet is key but you could also try cross training or circuits as your body can get accustomed to running. Otherwise really push the running by structuring your training with weekly interval, tempo and longer fartlek run sessions (unless you are already doing these in which case see earlier bit of my post!)

fran- am sure you'll manage a continuous 10k! Do you think it could be a psychological thing perhaps? If so, regular training runs which are longer should help you get over this so you are heading in the right direction!

As for running in the heat it is a great idea if you can get out early but also running in this weather (although obviously not in the midday sun) is the best way to acclimatise yourself to it.

LovelyRitaMeterMaid · 02/06/2009 13:30

Having flicked through it seems this fartlek training might help.

Have found a website with some ideas on - am worried about the idea of Whistle fartlek

kittywise · 02/06/2009 13:31

Fran if you ran 8 miles that is about 12k, I'm confused (confused emoticon)

helloo lovelyrita, well done on doing the c25k

peachsmuggler · 02/06/2009 18:02

I didn't fran. I weenied out and swapped my difficult interval run for a nice 5 miler. I'll do the intervlas this weekend. It was just tooo hot!

It was golod though, as even though it was hot I did it in 48 mins which is my quickest time for a 5 miles yet. Huzzah!

peachsmuggler · 02/06/2009 19:59

or even "good"

Whistle fartlek sounds very hardcore.

fran - am very impressed with your 9mmover 8 miles.

Tried on some running shorts today but decided my bottom was too unspeakable in them and shuffled out the shop
