Now. You fast people. Were you always fast, or did you speed train yourself up?

MoshiMoshi · 27/05/2009 17:05

Peachsmuggler- I have always run but certainly two things help get faster without fail - 1. Increasing mileage gradually so your body gets used to churning out the miles. 2. Speed training eg intervals mainly although fartleks on longer runs help too. After DC3 I was amazed at how quickly a weekly interval session dropped my times, it was more like a few weeks rather than a few months to get the speed up! I found intervals with a buggy tricky though as the toddler would find her Cheerios falling out of her bowl. I used to shout "ready girls.... Here we go!" before each set and the lids would get put on snack bowls to keep it all in. I suspect I will just be doing plenty of miles for that reason this time...

peachsmuggler · 27/05/2009 17:14

Thanks Moshi - that's very encouraging! Am in the second week of my 8 week speed training plan and think I can feel a small improvement on my normal runs, so here's hoping I turn into some sort of bionic woman shortly.

LOL at your LOs whizzing along with the lids on the snack bowls.

Orm - am shocked at your co-worker, what a cheeky git!

In saying that, I was out walking with DD and DP at the weekend and I pointed out to him where I do my hill training and he said "well it's not much of a hill is it?"!!!!! I said "Well YOU try sprinting up 10 times". He said "yeah, fair enough, I'm just saying, it's not really much of a hill"

Grrrrrrr

futurity · 27/05/2009 17:24

Orm - what a cheeky sod! Does he run though..I think not!

I have speed up..well..ish....from 10/11 min miles to 9 min miles which I managed on Monday in my Bupa 10K. I printed out a training plan from Runners World which included Tempo Runs and Speedwork which I had never done before but it must have done something right!

Just going to see if I can find one to get me to speed up a bit before a local 5K at end of June....wishful thinking I know!

peachsmuggler · 27/05/2009 17:27

Well done futurity! Was this the training schedule you used

www.runnersworld.co.uk/news/article.asp?SP=&v=3&UAN=76

I am currently following it and if I cna do 9 min miles for my 10k in July I would be well chuffed.

popsycal · 27/05/2009 19:06

Just lurking today - wondering when i will get out for a run with my ill family.

Am in awe of some of the speeds though i am faster now than i was before ds3 - was averaging bewteen 9ish-10 mmin miles over 5k and around 10 min miles over 10k. now I am around 8:30-9 min miles over 5k and do 4 miles in around 37 mins 9with a short tactical walk at the 2 mile point)

I need to peter out that walk. Need to look at the bupa training programme again.....

OrmIrian · 27/05/2009 19:14

No he doesn't run.

Pace is something I try to ignore TBH . I increase my distances but never seem to get much faster. But I would rather do a long run slowly than a short run fast iyswim. And I tell anyone who asks that I ran 12 miles at the weekend - where's the law that says I have to tell them it took me 150 mins ?

kittywise · 27/05/2009 19:29

orm, how crappy, silly sod

right thick question alert..................

SO would you NOT expect to go as fast on say an 8 mile run as you would a 4 mile run?

My last run before I got ill over a week ago now was 8 miles and I was very disappointed that it took me 85 mins. I thought "god you're a slow old fart"..

Before I did that distance I was faster iykwim?

Ok I must do fart thing training when I get better

peachsmuggler · 27/05/2009 19:36

kitty - When I was building up my mileage, I was running 10 min miles at 3 and 4 miles and as I ran further my objective was to maintain that speed, which I sort of managed (well was a little slower) up to 10 miles. Now am going back to improve speed at lower milages with the hope that I can then build up the mileage while maintaining the new speed.

If that makes sense....

So to answer your question, I think you would expect to go a little slower at the longer runs while you are getting used to the distances.

Themasterandmargaritas · 27/05/2009 19:37

Pillock. He is obviously just .

But hold on a sec, Orm, 12 miles is about 20 km, not so? Then I don't think 150 minutes is at all bad.

I managed 12k today, with a long and slow uphill for the last 2.5km, it took 1hr 12 mins, what pace is that then per mile?

OrmIrian · 27/05/2009 19:40

Isn't it?

Oh hurrah!

Seems very slow to me. DH is usually standing at the door with a 'what time d'you call this' look on his face when I get back.

kitty - when I know I am only doing 4 or 5 miles I can usually maintain a faster pace for longer. Especially in the middle of the run. Most of my long runs involve multiple hills and they make me much slower.

liath · 27/05/2009 19:42

theGoat - I think it was a serious case of physician heal poison thyself . Needless to say I am now frantically self-medicating for the sore stomach!

Orm what a twonk but I have to say I snorted so hard at your post I nearly needed the athena pelvic thingummy that moshi was on about .

Steala · 27/05/2009 20:24

Flies seem a common complaint then. Thanks for the support. And OrmIrian - yuck. I am vegetarian!!

Very impressed at the speeds. I can't run fast at all. Even when I try to do a tempo session, I still average out at 10.30 min miles.

MrsWednesday · 27/05/2009 22:51

Blimey, there are some fast people on here, 6.40 minute/miles...eek! I think I'd take off if I ran that fast. My breathing goes all out of kilter if I ran faster than normal (sprinting for the bus leaves me gasping for breath for a good ten minutes after).

Desperate - honestly, only people who run themselves are allowed to say anything negative (and they are least probably the least likely to). I'm sure I look gormless and wheezy when I run but I don't care. At least I'm doing it!

Moving house next week, so will be without internet access for god knows how long, and I think running may have to be put on hold until boxes are unpacked etc. If you have any good tips to pass on, please do - I haven't moved house in ten years and am a bit oblivious of the mayhem to come...

peachsmuggler · 28/05/2009 08:26

Good luck mrswed - the only tip I have, if you still have time to do this, is really, honestly, clear out before you move. It's really easy to get behind time and think, "I'll just pack it all and clear out at the other end". you never will. Do it now!

Not only will you have less physically to move and sort out at the other end, but you will feel spiritually cleansed and lighter. Ohhhhhhmmmmmmmm!

re. speed (again) I just can't imagine what running at 6.4 miles a min is like and TBH I dont think I could do it. Lats night I had to do 15 mins easy then 15 mins fast. I worked out when I got home that I did the first bit at 10 min mile (fair enough), and the second half at 9 min mile, but it felt like I couldn't have gone that much faster...

I guess I should try to run a mile or even half a mile at 8.5 min, 8 min and so on to see how fast I can run, but can't imagine being able to run fast for any length of time.

AitchTwoOh · 28/05/2009 10:49

you rang, masterandmargarita? i'm hanging out on the kiddie thread, where i belong. these times are frightening me.

oh, i have sore hips, not terrible, but tender. any ideas, ladies?

heartofgold · 28/05/2009 11:32

blimey it's been busy here! congrats to maygirl on your passenger welcome moshi am alternately lolling and in awe of your multistorey running restaurant twink, really hope things are better at home for you now.

and at all you speedy peeps, lol. i'm trying to back off thinking about pace until i get some more miles into my legs. i seem to have 2 paces - my longer run (10k+) at around 10:40, then my short run (5k) between 9 and 9:30 depending on how much effort i put in. but i have to keep reminding myself i did my first 5k less than 2 months ago, so there's plenty of time for all that (you too kitty [stern look] ).

haven't run since saturday - went camping and although i did take my running kit and i was looking forward to a run along the beach i always turned out to be too drunk/hungover have a cold now but will get out and stretch my legs tomorrow i hope (once more, hangover allowing, gig tonight).

peachsmuggler · 28/05/2009 13:30

Aitch - how old are your shoes? I had a sore hip recently and replacing my shoes sorted it out really quickly.

heartofgold - Am both impressed by your good intentions, and cheered by your hangover-induced inability to run on holiday. Huirrah!

I was supposed to be going to a gig tonight too but it is cancelled (Morrissey at the Brixton Academy) . However am still going out to get drunk

AitchTwoOh · 28/05/2009 13:31

i only just got them, from a proper place that filmed me running etc. good thought though, thank you.

heartofgold · 28/05/2009 15:44

lol don't tell me smuggler, did he find out there was going to be a burger van in the vicinity? sorry it's rubbish when you're looking forward to something and can't go - usually for us it's one of the kids being ill

MrsWednesday · 28/05/2009 16:25

Cheers peach, I have been clearing out drawers and cupboards half-heartedly but at the same time DH has been busy packing boxes and I have no idea what rubbish he's chucked in there! When he's not around I shall have a nosy and bin some more stuff I think.

Aitch, have you been doing any stretches? Squats are very good for hips apparently. I had loads of hip problems earlier in the year but since I started pilates they have cleared up (recent convert to pilates, can you tell? It's bloody great!)

sfxmum · 28/05/2009 16:42

hello all am out from under the fog of child illness and essay writing so finally went for 3 miles this morning - huge relief now just have to put finishing touches on essay and obsess about for a bit tonight

I am in awe of the times here I can just about do 10min mile but then I am old and fat
whatever your speed all this running is the best things ever and we get to talk about interesting injuries too

Orm I am amazed that you managed not to thump him what an arse I expect if he does some running it is just prancing about for show while girlies go past

mrsW good advice there regarding moving all I can think of is labels boxes and add simple instructions for movers (bathroom / kitchen etc) and
keep a spare box to take around with you for the essentials like kettle coffee tea sugar painkillers biscuits thread needle plasters.
and essential numbers + info close by

get the number of a good local take away
good luck

Themasterandmargaritas · 28/05/2009 17:35

Ooooo MrsW how exciting! My top tip would be to make sure you put your bed up first and ensure the bottle of gin is to hand.

Just checking up Aitch, to make sure you haven't sloped off Did you manage to get off the road? Otherwise the road running might be hurting your hips. Yoga, that's the answer.

Peachy, feck it, I can't run fast either. I am happy just to be able to run. Full stop. Bugger about the gig, though, I would love to see Morrissey in action.

Twink, how are things? Is Mr Twink going through a bad patch just now? Fingers crossed for you all.

AitchTwoOh · 28/05/2009 18:09

this is not my rightful home, masterandmarg... i'm strictly couch potato at teh moment.

peachsmuggler · 28/05/2009 23:04

heartofgold - Was about to get very indignant, as thought you were referring to Sir Moz's newly acquired (aherm) girth! However on second reading, maybe you are talking about the whole meatismurder thing! ha ha!

Anyway - v disappointed it was cancelled but went out anyway and had beer and sushi and wine, and it was good.

4 miles tomorrow. Thank god I didn't drink more!
