Hello! Can anyone help with a problem I have? My elegant running style involves my mouth hanging open, gasping for breath. This means I keep inhaling and choking on flies. There seem to be clouds of small ones at mouth height. I don't really want to run in a swine flu mask, but what else can I do?

MoshiMoshi · 26/05/2009 11:49

steala As midges tend to swarm in little crowds (not sure of official term for a group of midges?!) I normally wave them clear on approach and then clamp my mouth shut and hold my breath running through them. Of course this makes me look like a complete loon to those far away enough not to see the swarms (that's it!!!) of midges that I am dodging, but as I am not running to attract potential new friends it doesn't really matter.

popsycal · 26/05/2009 19:55

i did 2 runs at the weekend - both around 30 minutes but forgot my nike plus whatsit
normally amounts to around 5k but with hills which I normally don't Do

19fran76 · 26/05/2009 21:54

Congratulations on the PB Futurity.

Commiserations on the flies Steala I swallowed & re-gurgitated one the other day. I'm sure this charmed the casual onlooker also.

Ta Kittywise, today the egg deflated dramatically . (Sore tho'.)

Moshi I am impressed at your previous getting fighting fit form & am sure you will be fine. I started running/ambling six weeks post birth but didn't cut back on the enormous (& boy, was it) chocolate habit 'til about 3/4 months in when my appetite seemed to spontaneously calm down somewhat (phew!)

Ran 4 miles yesterday in 28 minutes & felt happy .

Hope that your household returns to being hale & hearty this week sfxmum.

fishie · 26/05/2009 21:59

oh vile steala. i pulled a muscle in my back coughing one out a few weeks ago. head down under trees is all i can offer.

OrmIrian · 26/05/2009 22:05

steala - I have that problem. I often feel too full for my dinner when I get hme

MrsWednesday · 26/05/2009 22:16

Congrats on becoming an aunty, MM, that's lovely news

And also congrats on the PB futurity, great time.

Haha, so pleased the mantra is working a bit, funny to think there are lots of us all muttering away to ourselves as we run.

Moshi, congrats on DC4. Did you run at all when you were pregnant? My sister is 3 months post-natal and gradually has increased her mileage since her DS was born - we went out together on Sunday and she managed nearly 8 miles no problem (she did run till 8 months pregnant though!)

Congrats maygirl!

Have been out for a couple of lovely runs in the countryside (cowpats, horse poo, flies and all) - so nice being out in the sunshine. Do you all use proper sports sun tan lotion or just normal ones?

Steala, no useful advice on the flies but welcome anyway.

Twink · 26/05/2009 22:42

Blimey, been sidetracked onto Camping threads for a few days and find I've missed loads!

Congrats to Aunty Marg and Maygirl.

Great result Futurity and cracking time for your 4 miles Fran, 7 min miles is fab. Have you entered a 10k yet?

Hope you don't catch dd's lurgy SFX and that Kittywise feels better soon.

I did 6 miles tonight with the club which helped me clear my head a bit as home stuff isn't too great at the moment. What would we do without running??

Gscrym, fun day sounds a laugh. I did one of those a few years ago and got hooked so be careful!

Twink · 26/05/2009 22:43

Oh, and I'm another mutterer under my breath:

'I can and I will'

'Kill the Hill'

Saggarmakersbottomknocker · 26/05/2009 22:47

Hi Twink - sorry the home stuff is hard. Hope you're coping OK.

Congrats on the pregnancies on here

Lots of speedy peeps - I'm still plodding and thinking I might never do more than 3 consecutive 10 minute miles but hey ho!

MoshiMoshi · 27/05/2009 08:43

mrsweds- yes, I ran up to 30 weeks this time when I decided to stop because (a) it was winter and I kept catching colds and (b) I found pushing the buggy (I always have my two youngest with me so run with the Phil'n'Teds) was getting a bit heavy as I was quite bumpy by then. So I am now faced with getting back into it and (most importantly) working on getting a pelvic floor of steel! Luckily I have my secret weapon to hand (or should that be to somewhere else - ha ha!) - an Athena Pelvic Trainer!
fran - it is encouraging to see that the chocolate habit has not slowed you down! I hope to get back to speedy times again. I used to be able to cruise nicely at 6.4 min/mile but could not dip below the 7 min/mile mark after the last pregnancy in my races. These were triathlon races so I so wonder if just focusing on running this time might be different? Do you do any speedwork (she says dreading interval sessions!)

peachsmuggler · 27/05/2009 10:37

god you're fast fran! Am so impressed. I struggle to do 9 min miles for 3 miles

moshi. So not only were you running up to 30 weeks, but you were also pushing 2 young children in a phil'n'teds!

19fran76 · 27/05/2009 11:09

Thanks for the encouragement Twink. All is not to my liking over 10k yet! I average about 9 minute miles & have not chastised myself out of the inevitable (so far) walking breaks (see how my time dips ) towards the end. I haven't picked a suitable (i.e. beginner friendly) 10k race (bit intimidated by the local selection ) yet but aim to improve enough in the next month to run the distance continuously. Then I'll be clean out of excuses. Your mantras made me chuckle.

Hi MrsMantratasticWednesday, I am impressed by your sisters' achievements.

Moshi I think that I should be asking you for the advice as I've only just started running after DC1. That's right, 1. You have 4 & have done triathlons & run whilst pregnant with buggies choc full of babies etc. I salute you . I starting some hill training & fartlek (like since last week when Wallace advised it) but I haven't done any interval sessions, they sound killer . (P.S. A pelvic floor of steel sounds like a splendid asset, I will investigate acquiring one).

Hello to everyone else, you all encourage me to aim higher & work a little harder. Thankyou .

19fran76 · 27/05/2009 11:13

Oooh, thanks peachsmuggler - Seems we were both compelled to bow before moshi

kittywise · 27/05/2009 11:44

oh god you fast people

futurity · 27/05/2009 11:54

4 miles in 28 minutes... 7 minute miles...... wow! I could never ever do those speeds...i blame my short legs

OrmIrian · 27/05/2009 12:18
kittywise · 27/05/2009 12:56

If I tried to run like that I would fall over .

I 'run' like a slug and if I were to run now I would run like a wheezy slug on inhalors

fishie · 27/05/2009 12:56

crikey. i think we might have to send some of you off to elite runners thread.

liath · 27/05/2009 13:31

I am seriously impressed by some of these speeds, very inspirational. I'm definitely in the built for comfort rather than speed camp!

Am off to the gym (if my babysitter ever turns up) to do some cross training. I ignored the physio and ran at the weekend and my ankle isn't too sore but I've been necking so much ibuprofen that I've got stomach-ache. Oops.

Themasterandmargaritas · 27/05/2009 15:25

Aitch, where are you?

SheherazadetheGoat · 27/05/2009 15:28

[slaps liath on the wrist] [and then realises she can't feel anything cos she is so dosed up]

sorry to hear you are still suffering.

i was doing really well teh past few weeks but this week i have legs of lead. i am pounding away but really not enjoying it. would love to speed up but seem to be getting slower.

OrmIrian · 27/05/2009 16:34

Well my confidence just took a pasting. Was making coffee in the kitchen at work and someone was telling me that they saw me running the other day.

"Oh yes", I said airily "I am really enjoying it. It's my headspace".

"Really" he replied. "You always looks so desperate when you are running"

arsehole!
