pants! hitchhiker name - tis mwff.

kittywise · 23/05/2009 16:49

hey margarita, that's fab news all round, yay!!

kettle bells are like cannonballs with handles you exercise with them and they are bloody amazing at keeping you fit and toned very quickly. They have done more for my arms than years at the gym , all for only 4 mins every few days. No more bingo wings here!!!!!

I'm still pretty rough today, had a very bad night coughing for hours like an old hag. I swear to god my pelvic floor is about to fall out

peachsmuggler · 23/05/2009 20:35

LOL at kitty's pelvic floor. In nice way of course!

Congrats master and mwff

I did teeny tiny 3 miles today as part of my trainign plan. Tee hee. It was nice!

kitty - Am VERY interested in these kettle bells. 4 mins? Really?

kittywise · 23/05/2009 22:27

peachsmuggler have a look here it will give you an idea. I have a fantastic dvd from canada with 4, 8 and 12 min workouts which are randomly shuffled every time you play, so no boredom!!

peachsmuggler · 24/05/2009 18:28

Wow! Do you buy them two at a time? What size do you use kitty?

19fran76 · 24/05/2009 20:42

Congratulations on becoming an auntie master.

Well MrsWednesday I made full use of your advice & ran 6.5 miles yesterday (halves are always important, no?) chanting "the hills are my aargh, aaargh.." up every one I met en route & keeping my head up at all times (that definitely really helped, I'm a bit of a pavement gazer). I pushed myself harder, ran more, stopped less & it felt good, hurrah! Mind you, I could use a plentiful supply of mantras - anyone else got a few favourites to spare?

Wallace got up a couple of hills today muttering "If I can walk this, I can run this" up more daunting gradients. Short & steep isn't too bad, it's the long, slow more gentle uphill that I'm utterly rubbish at.

Hope the injured & poorly are better soon.(Sympathy injury: I thwacked my bonce on the mantelpiece this morning & am currently wandering through life with a prominent comedy bump.)

badgermonkey · 24/05/2009 21:29

I started doing the "hills are my friend" thing too, and I caught DH doing it today on our run he reeeeally didn't want to do! Don't know why it works, but it does

kittywise · 24/05/2009 22:54

Ah yes I will have to try the 'hills are my friend' mantra whenever I manage to get out again. this bloody cold, it's going on FOREVER, so congested. I'm going to have to start off slow again aren't I and build up, bah!!!

fran, hope the egg goes soon!!

peachsmuggler I have 2 x 8kg, 1 x 12kg and 1 x 16 kg.

I am a bit weedy and cannot really cope with lifting more than 16 kg, hence the 2 x 8kg. For lots of the exercises you only use one bell, but I think it is worth having a pair of lighter weight bells. If I get back into it properly i might invest in another 12kg bell.

The odd thing about the bells is that I can lift weights with them WAY more than I could ever at the gym.

I think it is because you swing them a lot. They are great at toning and strengthening legs and abs, they really work the core muscles. Amazing things they are!! Recommended!!!

maygirl · 24/05/2009 23:41

SFX, your max HR is probably a fair bit higher than the one calculated by age, as you're a fit runner. You can test your maximum, then work out the 70-80% HR range of that. I think spinning gets me close to my max HR, and it does get higher then the calulated max going by my age. I found my HRM useful once I'd got an idea of my personal target zones.

Funny, I posted last monday after a 10k, saying wanted to get back under 1hr before DC2. Found out few days later DC2 is already on-board!! Off to find pregnant exercise thread!

Have a fun summer of running everyone!

peachsmuggler · 25/05/2009 08:11

Congratulations maygirl!!! Areyou going to keep running then?

Thanks kitty - I will definitely look into these, though am a bit skint at the moment so they might haver to wait.

Am doing intervals again this morning. Is pretty hot but thankfully overcast at the moment so will try and get out before the thunderstorms/intense heat!

Themasterandmargaritas · 25/05/2009 12:02

Thanks for all the congrats, the little poppet is to be called Imogen.

And congratulations to you too Maygirl.

You see, hills really are friends.

The kettle balls sound interesting however I get my work outs from lifting a solid 16kg toddler around, and he's free.

I popped out a quick 5k this morning, up the hill and down again.

gscrym · 25/05/2009 12:08

I just started back at week 1 of the couch to 5k. I feel like I'm dying but I have to see it through this time. I may have the chance to do a run, bike, swim fun day in September. They're short distances but I need something to aim for or I'll give up again.

gscrym · 25/05/2009 12:12

I think I'm in the wrong place. You're all able to distances and I struggle to run the length of myself.

futurity · 25/05/2009 17:38

did the bupa london 10,000 today...my first ever London run so I spent most of the time staring at the sights! Very well organised...started in waves so there was no pushing or anything..all very civilised! Got a PB of 1 hour 1 min (I think..still waiting for chip time) so all in all jolly good day!

maygirl · 25/05/2009 18:09

Hope to keep going Peachsmuggler, at slower pace. Ran till 18 weeks with DS1. Then had to have a couple of weeks off with a cold, so decided to stick to gym running on cross trainer after this. Was getting exercising outdoors with massive bump anyway!
Did last 5km run on cross trainer in 43 mins at 39 weeks, was loads fitter then than will be this pregnancy!
Just done 20 mins but had to walk several times, first trimester was the hardest last time for me. DS1 (2.9) did a fun run this morning, was v sweet, got he a medal and was v excited!
Thanks for the congrats!

peachsmuggler · 25/05/2009 19:13

gscrym - When you say fun day.....! Running, biking, swimming. Goodness!

futurity - Well done. Must be very satisfying getting a PB. Hope it was early enough to miss the worst of the heat. I ran this morning and it was pretty nice. Windy even, but this afternoon was BOILING!

gscrym · 25/05/2009 19:28

It's a 300m swim, 5k run and I think 20k bike ride.

It gives me something to aim for. I will probably need CPR at the end of it but god damnit, I'll finish it.

futurity · 25/05/2009 19:45

peachsmuggler - thanks..yes I am chuffed to get a pb! the weather was fine..very dull and a bit of pretend rain but it was very windy at one point. I was so thankful the heat stayed away as I went all wobbly afterwards as it was...something to do with lucozade I had afterwards to rehydrate I think..gave me a right upset tummy!

MoshiMoshi · 25/05/2009 20:49

Hello all ! Can I join this thread? I am trying to stop myself thinking of excuses as to why I can't start my training regime and as I spend most of my time while night-feeding DC4 (1 month old) on MN, I thought posting here might help! Before DC4, I was pretty fit having got back to a decent level of fitness after DC3 by training for some traithlons I entered. My background is in running and I thought that getting into triathlons might do more for my overall conditioning than running. I won't be racing this summer but could certainly use the long summer days to get started with running again before building a serious base over winter time. Problem is I seem to have developed a serious chocolate habit and liking for builders' tea with milk and sugar (having previously been a green tea drinker...) Heelp! I am desperate to stop feeling so dumpy now I am no longer pregnant...

GreenEggsAndSpam · 25/05/2009 21:14

Could I trouble you experts for some advice please, I am but an amateur - I go twice a week for 3 miles or so, and have been doing so for about a year now.
The last few times I have been getting a pain in my foot/lower leg when I run. It starts in the spot where my foot meets my leg, and the radiates outwards, mainly up my shin. I find I can't flex my toes up when it happens. I get it about 5 mins in to a run, and it only starts to wear off when I stop. I am left with an ache on the top of my foot, lower leg for a few hours afterwards. It is only on one foot/leg.
Any idea what it is and what I can do about it? I was just putting it up with it, but it is slowing me down and yesterday I had to stop because it was getting increasingly painful. It felt like the lower part of my leg and foot were sort of welded together. My knee felt fine
Thanks in advance

MoshiMoshi · 25/05/2009 22:29

greeneggsandspam - it sounds like it could be shin splints but you should definitely get yourself to a physiotherapist for a proper diagnosis and treatment plus recommendations for what to do in the meantime. If you continue, the problem could get much worse and harder to resolve! They are very common and usually due to a slight physical imbalance exacerbated by increasing the running intensity or volume too quickly which manifests itself in lower leg pain (sorry if rambling but v tired as sleep deprived with newborn). Hope you get it sorted - good luck!

GreenEggsAndSpam · 25/05/2009 22:36

MoshiMoshi - thanks for that. Will go and google and see if symptoms fit
Hope you get a good night with your newborn (awww)

peachsmuggler · 26/05/2009 08:58

Welcome Moshi. Congrats on your new baby. Am amazed/impressed you are planning running when you have a 1 month old. When my DD was 1 month old I was planning where my next piece of cake was coming from . You sound like a very motivated person, getting fit again after DC3. Wow!

kittywise · 26/05/2009 09:43

yes well done moshi!! if I tried to run with a one month old my pelvic floor would've been round my ankles

Bloody cold shows no signs of abating at all!!!!!!!
