I enjoyed the Murakami book, but I think he's mad to do that ultramarathon! Can't imagine what that must be like.

19fran76 · 17/05/2009 21:52

Watch out badgermonkey your husband might have a secret ultra training plan for you

Hi sfxmum, I've missed a few runs due to lack of sleep. Napping is a rare pleasure

Themasterandmargaritas · 18/05/2009 10:28

Flippin 'eck I go off for a girls weekend to Lamu Island and I come back to find it buzzing here!

Sounds like you are all very motivated.

Aitch? How is it going?

I ran a 10k this morning in bang on an hour and it was my bastard extra hard bastard hills route. I was very pleased.

I too run to Greenday Orm, and The Killers (I know all the words now) and Ocean Colour scene. Popsy point me in the direction of the indie podjogging thing please! I have one of those random bpm podcasts downloaded but it just doesn't sound like music to me. [old fart emoticon]

With five weeks to go to my half marathon, someone tell me how long my long run should be?

futurity · 18/05/2009 11:29

busy busy thread! Ran a 2 mile fun run in the rain yesterday and got SO wet. Did in just over 16 mins though so well chuffed!

Is anyone doing the Bupa 10K next Monday? Never done a run in London before and SOOOO looking forward to it. Worried about how busy the tubes will be (coming from Kings Cross)..should I leave lots of time just in case?

popsycal · 18/05/2009 12:38

At the risk of sounding stupendously thick - is a pod cast just a way of downloading lots of tunes in one go? I'm getting very bored of the music on my mobile so must get some more on.

Haven't run for over a week as I've some kind of ankle thing going on (I've confidently diagnosed a tibialis posterior tendonitis from a combination of an old anatomy text-book and google!!). Off to the physio tomorrow to see if I'm right and have been doing cross training stuff instead but it's not the same .

peachsmuggler · 18/05/2009 19:12

liath - no, a podcast is basically just a broadcast made for downloading from the internet. It is chat, not music.

Everyone seems to have been out pounding the streets, the thread is so busy!

I did 6 miles today for first time in ages, and middle 2 was 400m repeats fast in the park. It was really good actually, which was surprising as felt knackered before it.

Does anyone here donate blood? If so, how long do you wait after before running? I've donated loads of times before, but wasn't running then. Went along to give today but they were too busy so have made appointment for end of July but was wondering if anyone had experience of this.

Twink · 18/05/2009 19:33

I give blood and run! Usually I wait 24 hours before doing any strenuous exercise although occasionally I've gone out the same evening.

I always used to reckon on the body sorting itself out pretty quickly but was put right by a running friend who's also a medic - she had a fit when I gave blood a week before the London Marathon and reckoned I needed to give it at least a fortnight as although the blood volume replenishes itself quickly, some of the other bits take a while.

These days I stick to my 24 hour rule for general training and 2 weeks before an important race. HTH

maygirl · 18/05/2009 20:04

Hi everyone,
Did exactly 1 hour for my 10km race yesterday. It was really hot and sunny after pouring down all morning. I found it really tough, lungs still hurting! I could do 50 mins pre DS1, I'd like to get back there before having a DC2!
You're all inspiring me to give listening to music a go.

maygirl · 18/05/2009 20:17

I give blood and run too, train normally, but usually end up not having time to do both in the same day, and like Twink I avoid doing it 1-2 weeks before a race. A week before a marathon, wow! Did you notice any effects?

TheHumanTorchIsDeniedaBankLoan · 18/05/2009 20:23

hello

I really want to start running but Ive tried bursting into a bit of a run when out with the buggy and it feels dreadful

I am @ 2stone overweight and had a c-section 10mths ago, when I run all my joints feel really 'bangy' can't really explain it,
so don't really know how to start?

do you need to eat first? or run on an empty stomach?

is grass running better than pavements? how do you deal with dodgy teenage blokes? do you run alone or in pairs?

eek ? any advice?

AitchTwoOh · 18/05/2009 20:32

aaaah, come with me...

TheHumanTorchIsDeniedaBankLoan · 18/05/2009 20:37

ahhh....been looking at Runners world..seems a little trainer shopping is going to have to come first!

TheHumanTorchIsDeniedaBankLoan · 18/05/2009 20:38

thanks aitch!

AitchTwoOh · 18/05/2009 20:39

here is where the numpties hang out... this thread is for the lean and lissome and those of us still on the 'couch to 5k' thread merely lurk in order to catch the occasional word of wisdom from our fitter, better sisters...

for the record, i am 9 months-ish after a section and i felt absolutely wrecked by it. not a bad op, no scar problems etc etc but it did something terrible to me, i felt. i went for an appointment with a good chiro who popped a few things back into place, and have also been for a few sessions of gyrotonics (a bit like pilates) and that's what got me ready to run. i'm doing the bupa 5k training plan (am about to start week 4).

it is truly REMARKABLE what you find you can do when you follow a programme, you do improve surprisingly quickly (says she who hid and smoked her way through school cross country running).

Themasterandmargaritas · 18/05/2009 20:46

Oooooo Aitch. You're a convert now, see it didn't take long did it?

at the lean and lissome comment.

Well done Maygirl, I'm sure you will be back to under an hour soon.

Run and give blood, wow. Sadly I can't give blood as I am potentially malaria ridden.

Liath, I hope you are up and back to it soon.

I looked at the podjoggers thingumy podcast, but there is almost 3 minutes of that annoying Bob man talking and then trying to sell some totally useless software . The shame of it.

AitchTwoOh · 18/05/2009 20:50

lol he is pathetic at selling, isn't he? i couldn't bear it a minute longer, i confess, and switched it off.
i'm still a bit about it all, tbh, m&m, but y'know, i should do it etc etc etc. i still can't breathe and run at the same time, which i fear may go badly for me as the minutes increase...

Themasterandmargaritas · 18/05/2009 20:57

Now if he had a deep and sexy kind of come hither voice, I may even have visited his website. As it is, he had to go.

I am so sad Aitch, I have spent the whole evening re-doing my running playlist and now I want to go out and try it out.

AitchTwoOh · 18/05/2009 20:59

see, what i want, right, is for someone to upload their running songs to somewhere and then we'll all be able to download the mixes (and judge each others' musical tastes). for free, obv.

gemmummy · 18/05/2009 21:01

hi all, i'm new to this, got my first race in july a 10km and i'm really excited!

Themasterandmargaritas · 18/05/2009 21:04

Welcome to the madhouse gemmummy.

Exactly Aitch, sod all this bpm business and just copy what works for everyone else. I'm sensing an opportunity.........

AitchTwoOh · 18/05/2009 21:13

really? cut me in when you go public, eh?

MrsWednesday · 18/05/2009 21:56

Some great times on here, loads of running - feeling guilty as I haven't done any since last week.

Masterandmargeritas, 10k in an hour up hills is v impressive. I think with 5 weeks to go, you should do a 9 mile run as your long run. I have usually only managed to get up to 11 miles before my half marathons. Is it a hilly course?

That book sounds interesting, will put it on my list. Does anyone get a subscription for Runner's World? Is it worth getting?
