Yes, I've wondered about that too MrsWednesday Master hats off to you, I've not made friends with proper scarey hills yet, nor gone in search of them, frankly.
Joosey, how was day one? file your report!
Gemmum hello there. I've been looking for a suitable (i.e. not too taxing ) race for july/august (like to think I might manage 10k by then) How did you pick yours?
Howdy to everyone else too.

jooseyfruit · 19/05/2009 06:16

day one of 10 training was a 20 easy run, which i did on the treadmill at work in a very warm room with no windows.

i'd downloaded an hour long 140-170 bpm techno/housey dance type thing from podrunner, which made me run, yes run, like a crazy mutha. in fact i covered just over 2 miles in 20 mins which i was quite chuffed with.

i'm off out into the driving rain fresh air to do my interval training today. eeep.

how's everyone else doing?

what have you all got planned running wise today?

jooseyfruit · 19/05/2009 06:16

10 k i meant.

jooseyfruit · 19/05/2009 06:18

and 20 minute. god i can't see straight i'm so knackered.

Themasterandmargaritas · 19/05/2009 08:03

joosey.

Thanks MrsW, 9 miles equals about 14.5 which I have been doing and so can manage it for my long run. I will stick to that once a week for a couple more weeks then up it to 11 miles if I can find the right route.

Yes the course is a particularly brutal one, it is at an altitude of slightly higher than here (we are at 5,500 ft) across a wildlife conservancy so the 'roads' are gravelly, and there are many hills particularly around the 15 to 18k mark. It will also be hot.It is all for good causes, some money goes to the conservancy and we as a team are raising money for an orphanage in Western Kenya, more details later!

GeorgeAndTimmy · 19/05/2009 11:28

Sorry to butt in, but wondered if you could help. I run a little bit, and have been using gmap-pedometer to see my distance/calorie burn. However, I have just realised that you can't put speed in, so how does it judge calorie burn if you could be doing 8 mph, 13 mph, or just walking. I assume you burn more calories running than walking?!
Ta!

OrmIrian · 19/05/2009 13:03

themaster - have just got 21st Century BreakDown and it's on my MP3 for this evening's run.

Am planning about 7 miles tonight. Have limited time as DH goes out to the gym as soon as I get back. Am reluctant to do too much off-road as everywhere is saturated atm.

mwff · 19/05/2009 20:06

g&t - actually there's not much difference between calories burned per mile running or walking, it's just that walking takes longer, so you burn fewer calories per minute iyswim. if you use mapmyrun that has a pace calculator (i.e. distance against time) and calculates calories based on your weight as well, which is the thing that makes the big difference - the energy to shift 8 stone around is a lot less than the energy to shift 12 stone.

OrmIrian · 19/05/2009 20:19

And isn't there something about regular aerobic exercise increasing your metabolic rate? So that you burn calories more quickly all the time not just when running.

Or is that just wishful thinking.

I know that I am slimmer now than I have ever been this side of 21 - and I eat just as much if not more.

mwff · 19/05/2009 20:28

afaik your heartrate remains raised after running, so you continue burning additional calories for a while after you've stopped, and i guess if you're building muscle mass (does running do that? not sure... ) that raises your metabolic rate overall.

i have eaten many chocolate orange mini rolls today "paid for" by this morning's run. running for food = win

OrmIrian · 19/05/2009 20:30

I think it does build muscle mass - I have thighs you can crack nuts with. Under the flab of course. And only v soft nuts

mwff · 19/05/2009 20:48

lol @ soft nuts - chocolate coated ones?

GeorgeAndTimmy · 19/05/2009 21:28

Nuts crushed by thighs? Which thread is this again?
Thanks for the tip re mapmyrun. Looks like walking is about 2/3 calorie burn of running, which is comforting that the extra effort is worth it!
I have been running for nine months. Can now run for 3-4 miles without needing to stop. Put on 4kg though - how does that work

Twink · 19/05/2009 21:50

I'm totally & utterly wrecked tonight - did a gym session early this morning then had a phone call from a mate saying she'd pick me up for running club tonight.

I honestly can't remember when I did a session so tough:

10X60m sprints off 20 secs rest
6X 'bridge sprints' (up a railway bridge staircase) no rest in between

2 minutes rest

Then repeat 3 times !!! We effectively did an hour of sprint work so I'm currently wolfing dd's chocolate raisins

Hope I sleep well tonight.

19fran76 · 19/05/2009 22:13

GeorgeAndTimmy It must be all of that new-build muscle mass. Weighs more, y'know

Hey Joosey, I can picture the dangers of rave music all too clearly now . Techno music is designed for the demented, no? I ran five miles tonight but I think I left it too late before dinner 'cos all I could think about was how I wanted to get round as quick as possible because I was hungry. Could call it my fartlek session, kept speeding up way beyond my capabilities trying to get to home/food, then having to sloooow it right down again.

Hello again OrmIrian, how long have you been a runner then? (Want a quick calculation on acquiring nut-cracking thighs, sounds like a passport to a more exciting life )

MrsWednesday · 19/05/2009 22:13

Blimey, I'm not surprised you're wrecked doing that after a gym session too!

I went to running club tonight, plodded around for 6.5 miles and struggled for every single one of them apart from the last sprint to get home out of the rain.

Orm, same here on the weight. I think for me, running has made me more active in general which has helped - I'm more likely to walk somewhere now whereas before I'd always take the car.

Eek, that course sounds 'challenging' to say the least MM, but definitely more interesting than running round Leeds ring road!

fishie · 20/05/2009 08:58

ok i am running 100k+ a month (10k 3-4 times a week). so why am i still so bloody fat? this is not the miraculous transformation i hoped for!

i think i once read a post suggesting that one needs to run at least a marathon every week to see any serious weight loss. what do you all think?

mwff · 20/05/2009 09:49

first of all fishie, wow impressive mileage

for my 11k run on saturday i burned 600 cals, so if i were doing your mileage i'd earn between 1600 and 2200 extra cals a week. that's not masses if running makes you hungry, and only enough to lose around 1/2 a lb a week if you didn't eat anything at all on top of normal.

AitchTwoOh · 20/05/2009 09:54

that's a bit depressing actually, mwff. i thought the weight was supposed to 'fall off' with running? [depressed] [post-baby]

OrmIrian · 20/05/2009 10:01

Well I don't know. I can only go on my experience which is that I have got slimmer, firmer and a better shape. I don't know about weight as I don't own scales. But and at least a dress size smaller than I was when I started running - and that was after having lost weight through diet alone.

I think there is more at stake than simply calories out and in.

I have been overeating a lot recently and have got a bit bigger so i am getting back to basics with low-carb for a while. But I maintain that it is mostly the running that makes the difference.

Maybe I'm odd.

AitchTwoOh · 20/05/2009 10:07

kinda the whole point for me is that i really don't want to have to diet, i just want to eat with the family.

futurity · 20/05/2009 10:23

I read that too fishie that women need to be running at least 28 miles a week for it to impact on their weight (men is about 20 miles..not fair!). I fall into the trap of thinking I can eat what I want because I run....and eating too much!

thanks for your reply earlier sfxmum ...I have checked the tube and it all looks fine for Monday and have worked out what train we have to get. So looking forward to it..hope the weather is ok!

mwff · 20/05/2009 10:32

okay well if we're onto weight loss: i've lost a stone and a half of baby weight since jan combining running with limiting calories (at a sensible level, i think my basic allowance was around 1500, then i'd eat whatever i'd run/other exercise on top of that). i eat with the family but reduce portions slightly, make more calorie conscious choices and cut out snacks/takeaways/drink etc. it's really been very little hardship, and now i'm onto maintenance so choc and booze a-go-go

there's links around on some of the weightloss threads to food focus (free) and weight loss resources (subscription) sites that do all the counting for you. i find filling in a food diary makes me make much more conscious choices about food, and that should be enough to keep me where i am now, which i'm very happy with.

(btw the cals burned are based on me weighing 9 stone, if you weigh more, you'll burn more)

19fran76 · 20/05/2009 10:37

Don't despair Aitch. I found that I lost an average of 1-2lb per week but slowly & surely it all adds up. I didn't diet or cover long distances either. So like Ormrian I don't know what other factors there may be but running really does help.

fishie · 20/05/2009 10:39

quelle horreur - imagine what i'd be like if i didn't run!

right then, 28 miles here i come.

i have got a bit smaller, just not the bits i'd hoped for.
