10 k!!

popsycal · 16/05/2009 20:24

joosey

there are svereal 10k programs out there
bupa
running world
some weird podcast one i found
I am sort of follwoing the bupa 10k one right now and am sort of on week 2

I am a 'returning' runner though. Got to 10k in sept 07 then got pregnant, and restarted in jan 09 on my own 'fastrack' couch to 5k

jooseyfruit · 16/05/2009 20:47

thanks popsycal!
i'm planning to use the program i found in a fitness supplement that came with the guardian.

i did the 5k one from there and liked it. there's also half marathon plan which i am very tempted by!

19fran76 · 16/05/2009 20:57

Hi joosey, I think we probably are, having looked at your recent posts! Seems we are both in the first flush of real enthusiasm. Perhaps we can become virtual running buddies? Currently run 10k (must start thinking in kilometres not miles ) with several short walking breaks. Maybe I should join you in working towards eliminating them over the next 6 weeks. I looked at your program which brought up another question (!): Do any of you cross train? If so, what do you do?

MrsWednesday · 16/05/2009 20:58

Fran, that's pretty much exactly what I did, started with a local 10k, then trained for the half marathon (gradually increasing the distance of one long run a week), then started working on my speed.

Are you using any online training logs? I use this one:

good run guide

(you have to pay a tenner a year but can have a free month's trial I think)

My lucky DH now gets to listen to me droning on talking about my mileage, pace etc and I show him graphs and everything. The hours fly by in this house

Is there a local running club you could join too? Also good for varying training and going on different routes etc.

OrmIrian · 16/05/2009 21:00

joosey - just beginning to wonder if I am invisible here

IME the music you play can make a big difference. My fav atm is Green Day - it's quite fast paced so can make for a reasonable speed, or act as rocket fuel for tired legs ag t the end of a run. I don't let it dictate my pace so much as encourage me.

The new running music I downloaded is a bit different as it's fairly unforgiving. It'verh hard not to run to it's beat. I will use when I'm doing my shorter road runs, but I don't think I will use it for longer off-road runs as it is too unrelenting.

OrmIrian · 16/05/2009 21:00

Sorry - that was to fran not joosey.

MrsWednesday · 16/05/2009 21:09

I loved this blog post from the Guardian project marathon:

The Improver one here

It's pretty much how I feel about running, especially the bits about clearing your head, and seeing the seasons change.

19fran76 · 16/05/2009 21:13

Hi ormirian

Think I can still see you through the fog of my rapid fire questioning. Will borrow boyfs ipod then given what you've said.

Thanks mrswednesday, have only used Mapmyrun for planning routes so far. Haven't looked into running clubs yet. Good to hear you've achieved what I'm currently thinking about.

Will leave thread for a while to eat pizza & allow others to get a word in!!

jooseyfruit · 17/05/2009 09:50

sorry for rattling on orm.
i was inspired by your post to find some jogging music, downloaded some free which ranges from 140-170bpm, i hope i can keep up. i'm going to do 5k on the treadmill at work this afternoon, see if it makes me go faster!

fran i will gladly be your training buddy! i'm starting that 10k program on monday. i'm dreading the 'run for 2 minutes' bit, i'm a real plodder, don't know if i can actually run!

it's a beautiful day here, wish i was outside, instead of stuck here at work!
have a good day.

19fran76 · 17/05/2009 10:44

Double sorry OrmIrian, my real life etiquette is appalling too. I often get excited & interrupt people

Hello again Joosey, it's raining here which I'm viewing as a plus 'cos I'm planning to do a run along the sea front (6 miles - 10k ish?). The rain should mean less people to dodge/witness my sweaty face up close .

Yes, I agree, interval training sounds a bit punishing from my not fit perspective too. Good luck. I'll put my feet up Monday while you run (!) then you can do the same on Tues while I go out

Hope work flies by.

badgermonkey · 17/05/2009 11:32

I run along the seafront too, fran, and I go really early because the thought of swerving round groups of meandering day-trippers is too annoying! It's nice when it's sunny but it does mean zillions of people out walking their dogs...

Did a long slow run of 7 miles today, no walking (smug face here!). That's the longest I've ever done! As we got to the 6 mile mark, I said to DH "that's a 10k!" which seems miraculous to me because two months ago I hadn't run one step since I was about 14 and got out of PE lessons to do extra Maths (I was a bit of a boff and NOT sporty in the slightest). Also, getting back home at 8.20 in the morning and having the whole day ahead of us with 7 miles under our belts is a really great feeling. I'm training for Race for Life and I downloaded a SmartCoach training schedule from the Runners World website. No way would I even have attempted to go that far without seeing it in black and white. I like having it written down so I don't get the chance to justify not going to myself. This way, I just do what the schedule tells me.

popsycal · 17/05/2009 11:53

Just back from 4 miles - short 40 sec walk at half way point and took the second half at a slower pace.
first 2 miles: 17:35
whole 4 miles: 37:53

The first mile was a real struggle and so was the last one - but the middle 2 were great!

I have kind of abandoned the 10k running programme and am only getting out twice a week.

I really want to run all of the 10k in July with perhaps a very brief tactical walk half way . Finding it hard to find the time to get out running often enough.

Any advice?

badgermonkey · 17/05/2009 11:59

Have you got time to get up early and go out? I get up half an hour early and head out for a little two-miler every now and then. No kids here, though, which makes it a bit easier! Getting out of bed is hard but you feel good for the rest of the day after a quick shower.

popsycal · 17/05/2009 12:13

er if I got up anyearlier I wouldnt get to bed!
Three boys here who all wake before 6!

AitchTwoOh · 17/05/2009 12:18

hang on badgermonkey... you only started running two months ago?!

mwff · 17/05/2009 12:22

afternoon all, blimey it's been busy (lol, wrote busty, i hope you all have decent shock absorbers ) in here lately. hello new peeps

i did 10k for the first time today should have taken a snorkel though oh and last week i managed a 5k in 27 1/2 mins which i was over the moon about too, first time under 9mm. lol there's something about the numbers isn't there, either the k or the mins, lovely to see progress in cold hard numbers

for those asking about moving up from 5k here's what i've done fwiw - did my first 5k about 6 weeks ago and since then i've made my weekend run my "long slow run", adding 10 minutes each week (i've always run more to time than distance), up to an hour and 10 this week. and then i do two or three 30min/5kish runs during the week and i use one of those as a fartlek session (see up thread) cos i love the feeling of running hard but can't keep it going much past 500m or so

i think the general advice is to build up a base of miles and the rest will come, and that's the best way to avoid injury (i.e. not running too fast/too far too soon), but i do the fartlek stuff to keep me interested, i do try to make sure i'm well warmed up before i start.

and for training logs i really recommend fetch - i just love the numbers/charts/graphs etc, it's really motivating, and there's message boards too.

as for music, that's the best bit about it for me, it's like going dancing but in a straight line and the club plays all my favourite stuff

mwff · 17/05/2009 12:24

ah but doesn't badgermonkey have her own personal military fitness trainer?

badgermonkey · 17/05/2009 12:56

Not me, I swear, although I do have a husband who is currently working out 6 times a week and puts me in the shade (as well as not letting me stop when we're running ).

I just looked up my log from when I started and the first time I ran was March 23rd, so nearly two months ago. And it took me 22 minutes to do 1.5 miles on the treadmill. My overall "training" programme (sounds too fancy for me) is pretty much what mwff outlined above.

mwff · 17/05/2009 13:15

it was your dh i was thinking of - i thought you said he was ex-military - anyway sounds like he's pushing you pretty hard and getting results :D

jooseyfruit · 17/05/2009 15:08

love the sound of running on the beach.

is it harder work running on sand?

i like mwff's idea of building up a base of miles before working on improving your speed.

i just read somewhere that De la Soul have released a 45min 'album' for runners, for anyone who is partial to a little hip hop!

badgermonkey · 17/05/2009 15:43

I've never actually dared run on the beach - I'd be interested to know what it's like before I get sand in my trainers!

My DH is a physics teacher, not military...although it does mean he's used to shouting and disciplining reluctant participants

popsycal · 17/05/2009 15:51

have just discovered jogtunes indie podcast
much nicer on my ears than rawwwwberrrrrt and dj steve whatsit

just trying to work out how to get more than one of them on my ipod

19fran76 · 17/05/2009 19:27

Hello everyone & thanks for all the advice & progress reports. I will check out the sites you've recommended properly soon.
badgermonkey I reckon you've got a smug face well earnt. I managed to do my six miles in 54 minutes, which is o.k. but it did peter out into a fair few walking breaks in the last couple of miles .
Am persuaded that a fartlek session each week is a good idea as I'm often self- talking my run to the next lampost, corner, hedge etc anyway
(Completely forgot to pilfer boyfs ipod before leaving )
Mrs Wedsnesday thanks for the link, have you read Murukamis' 'What I talk about when I talk about running' ?Full of lovely musings on running, short but sweet.

sfxmum · 17/05/2009 19:54

19fran76 at the start of the year I was on and on about the Murakami book, got it for Christmas glad someone else enjoyed it too

did not go out today but having barely slept this weekend I decided to have a nap instead feel quite refreshed now
