Fantastic time

Mine was about 2h20mins. A bit of a slog at times due to the heat - got sunburn! - but overall enjoyable

MrsWednesday · 10/05/2009 19:25

Yay, well done Wallace! Ouch to the sunburn. I have rather unattractive mid-calf tan lines from running in the sunshine.

Enjoy loads of well-deserved food (that's what I'm doing anyway!)

OrmIrian · 10/05/2009 20:00

MrsW

Did you do a half? Please say no. less than 2 hours? Sob!

Well done Wallace and MrsW

Made the mistake of inviting DD with me this morning on her bike. My 11 mile off-roader was turned into a 3 miler along the canal ...slowly with lots of stops to look at ducks But it was nice to have DD to myself.

mwff · 10/05/2009 20:02

wow mrs w that's pretty damned speedy, and no less an achievement wallace - the longer you go for the more determined you have to be i reckon. huge congrats to you both and enjoy a well earned rest and free-cake scoffing over the next couple of days (since i started running in a quest to lose weight i always count runs in terms of calories earned!)

i ran into (in a manner of speaking) the bristol 10k this morning. having had not even a passing interest in running until a few months back i've never watched a race before and it was surprisingly moving to see the support the stragglers were getting at the end. still not sure i'd ever want to do it though...

sfxmum · 10/05/2009 20:44

well done mrsW (that time!)& wallace

sfx resolves to try harder

Well done you two.

Blimey MrsW that's a hell of a good time.

peachsmuggler · 10/05/2009 21:36

Well done MrsWed and Wallace!

I did 5 miles today for the first time in ages and it was really good. Felt pretty comfortable and was feeling quite chuffed.

Then watched the blue peter lass and was blown away. She was AMAZING. Totally inspiring.

fishie · 11/05/2009 10:35

well done both - mrsw you are dead fast!

mwff i know just what you mean re sweating and overheating and snow. i am dreading this summer, when on earth will i be able to run? i leave for work at 7am so no go there.

i have two 5-6pm slots with paid childcare and will just have to sweat it out i suppose. any tips v appreciated.

AitchTwoOh · 11/05/2009 11:09

what about wewtting your hair, put it ina ponytail if long? that's what i do to the dds if tey're overheating

mwff · 11/05/2009 11:57

that's not a bad plan aitch - i tried damping my tshirt before i went out today and it helped for the short time until it evaporated. i'm planning to run it under the tap and wring out next time. trouble is i get absolutely freezing doing my "warmup" walk, can't bloody win

Wallace · 11/05/2009 13:21

Did I mention that the man who came in just behind me was 81 years old !

GOt results, My time was 02:17:28 and I was 88th in my category.

Twink · 11/05/2009 14:28

Just back from a weekend away & catching up with the fab results here, well done Wallace & Mrs W!

Re: sweating (I'm with you Saggar), be a bit careful about soaking your shirt as you might find the neck seams rub. Eventually you do adapt to the hotter weather; I never believed I would but after a period running in Thailand, I came back here and had no problems with it whereas previously I'd get the shivers cos I overheated so much.

Some great efforts going on, I'm planning to get out later today but stacked my bike on Thursday so am still a little delicate. If I don't make it I'll definitely be out with running club tomorrow as I've decided I need to get some races onto the calendar to keep motivation strong.

Mr T is continuing to pound the treadmill, it's getting harder everytime now but he'll be there until the bitter end. His determination is awesome. Having seen the Blue Peter clip & living with him, I'd better find something challenging to do else I'll never be able to moan!!

maygirl · 11/05/2009 15:08

This months Runners World recommends putting kit in freezer for 5 mins, or a bandana rinsed in cold water and wrung out, tied round neck. Great race results! Hope to go out for an hour tonight.

Themasterandmargaritas · 11/05/2009 17:17

Wallace what a good time too, I shall take inspiration from you (and the 81 year old!) for my half at the end of June. Are you pleased with it?

Re the running in hot weather, our weather has now turned cooler (23 degrees as opposed to 27) which has helped me but it is hellishly humid instead. I'm not sure I could really put my kit on after it has been in the freezer, it's difficult enough to get the blasted tights on when they are not frozen . My suggestion is to wear a hat that has been liberally soaked in water beforehand. Or to carry a running water bottle to drink or pour it over the top of your head whilst running. I'm with Twink though, in so much as you adapt pretty quickly to the heat and your body copes admirably after a wee while. Just make sure you rehydrate well after running, I often get a headache if I haven't taken on enough water afterwards.

Good to hear MrTwink is still pounding his treadmill, he is definitely an inspiration.

Wallace · 11/05/2009 19:45

Thanks Master, I am pleased with my time - it was a few minutes slower than my first Half but that was the Aviemore one which is mostly downhill. Dunfermline was very hilly and very hot (in comparison to most of my runs )

Did I forget to say well done MrsW

Anyone have any races planned(giraffes?) I am doing a small new local 10k on 7th June.

I am also planning to make sure I run 10miles+ at least once a month to keep the distance up so when I do my next half it is a doodle!

AitchTwoOh · 11/05/2009 21:05

well done wallace, i'm ridiculously impressed, it's amazing.
is it too crap to say that i did a mile and a half the other day? i'm just starting week 3 of that bupa plan.

so what i'm looking for is tales of how unfit you were when you started, and how recently that was...

fishie · 11/05/2009 21:20

thanks all. i am very fussy about drinking water and always have at least 1.5 litres after a run. maybe i can adapt

aitch i have been running in an organised way for about a year. started on 20mins, now up to 1.5 hours on a good day. i do about 10k per hour. still more to do...

AitchTwoOh · 11/05/2009 21:23

well if you started on 20mins then i have no further use for you, my little fish.

fishie · 11/05/2009 21:58

oh cripes i had been swimming for ages, about 150 lengths a week. i ran for a train one day and found that i could...

AitchTwoOh · 11/05/2009 22:14
maygirl · 11/05/2009 22:47

Hi Aitch, I started ages ago, had entered a Great North Run with some friends just after we'd finished Uni in Newcastle, then discovered I could only run for 5 minutes! Sheer panic, never got past 1x 6 mile run in training, all other runs only 3-4 miles but got round on the day in 2hrs 48. Met my runner DH same time (literally!)and he helped me out with training and I improved pretty quickly from then on. I definately wasn't up to 1.5 miles running with out stopping after 3 weeks.
I'm racing this Sunday in a 10km, did about 5 miles tonight.

SVioletdidnotwimpoutofweek4 · 11/05/2009 22:51

Aitch - see my latest post on Couch to 5K - I couldn't manage to walk briskly for 5 minutes a month ago, and tonight I did w4r1 (run 3 mins, walk 90 secs, run 5 mins, walk 2.5 mins, repeat) and didn't keel over at the end...
Am guessing you want someone further along the running path than me though

MrsWednesday · 11/05/2009 23:02

They are so bloody fast, the over 70s lot - must be all the years of practice. I was running near a man called George wearing a +75 vest for quite a while until he overtook me.

Well done Wallace, was reading on runner's world about yours and it sounded tough. Are you going to sign up for another one?

Sfxmum, when's yours, is it imminent? Can I sponsor you?

Twink, you are awesome already , always so helpful and full of advice even when you have loads of other stuff on your plate.

Thanks for all the supportive messages, they are massively appreciated and have helped to take my mind off the pains in my leg muscles - have been wincing when attempting to walk anywhere, so not a good advert for running today

AitchTwoOh · 12/05/2009 10:11

no deffo violet, you're the one i want to hear from. oh, and it wasn't a mile and half of running, lol, it was 2-3 mins on and 2 mins walking.
