in april 2007 i wen t from total novice running hater to c9ontnuos 5k in july 07 to continuos 10k in sept 07
nothing til jan 09 and am now at continuioss 4 miles at a better speed than before

Aitch, if it helps, I started the couch to 5k in Jan, found it a struggle to do three min runs, now I can run 7 miles without much effort, well the last mile is tricky!!!

Aitch, when I first took the plunge and joined a Rosemary Conley exercise class, some of the other members were planning to WALK Race for Life - I was too scared to join them but vowed that the following year I'd run it.

I went from not being able to run to the next lamp post, seriously that's how unfit I was, to completing 5k in July 2002. By September I was up to 10k, a half marathon followed in Feb 2003 and then I got very silly and started triathlon. Since then I've done stacks of races, from 5k to marathons, on road, trail & in kneedeep mud and can honestly say it's transformed my life - not to mention my shape, I've gone from squeezing into a size 18 on a good day to being comfortable in a size 10. It's a great way of meeting people, and no-one cares what you 'do' in 'real life', when you're out, you're a runner, plain & simple.

I also think I'm a good role model to my pre-pubescent daughter as she can see that it's ok for girls to do and enjoy sport.

So stay with us, we've all started from scratch at some stage and keep us informed of your progress!

I totally agree. It's one of the things I'm most pleased about. DD tells her friends 'mum ran 12 miles on Sunday. She's really fit' () and she is so proud of me! She sees it as something worth doing. Long may it continue. She has run in the school athletics team 2 yrs running and we 'practised' together for a few weeks first.

Oh, and aitch! When I first started running the first time (many many years ago) I was still smoking and used to have to stop and have a sit down after one circuit of the park. And cough like an old gammer

And this time I struggled with 1 mile. Really struggled.

It's partly in your head though. When you start if things start to hurt, or you get out of breath or really sweaty, it feels wrong somehow and your head tells you you have to stop. Getting over that barrier and knowing that you can go on is part of the battle.

went out for usual 5k after nearly 2wks off, it felt good, must work off those croissant baguettes and assorted cream cakes, it is not fair to have a boulangerie within smelling distance of the front door

I am doing my first race for life in June, if I can do it anyone can

and I definitely agree about being a good role model for my daughter she is just 4 but already thinks that running and cycling are part of daily life and that we walk whenever possible

am running partly because it is my mum's 25 anniversary and because I had a scare last year but was given all clear, I did however get great support from fantastic people and would like to give something back

Aitch stick with it, you can do it! I echo the others, I only started last September and could only run for a minute then walk 5 minutes. By the time October came I managed a 10k race and didn't stop and was so pleased.

I think it is fantastic the dc are proud. My dd wants to run with me especially when she has cross country at school. Dh also runs. In fact there is a small group of mummies here now all inspired by the running, started by one mummy a couple of years ago, that we are all at it and have become quite running bores discussing routes and times.

It is so totally in your head, today I did a 5k because I had to and part of me said 'oh sod it just stop' the other part of me told myself to stop being so ridiculous and MAN UP. If you think you can do it, you can do it.

We all want you to do it.

aitch i started because i couldn't find time to do the things i really wanted to do (swimming and yoga) and i thought running might be easier to fit in. turns out i'm one of those types that goes all doolally for the endorphins and not sure i could stop if i wanted to - the mood crash would be horrific.

i started at the beginning of feb on the c25k (never run before, hated pe at school etc. etc.) and i did 9k last weekend, should be up to 10 this. i'm dead fit now

Stay right here Aitch! I started running 1st May 2007 using the Bupa 5k prog. Did 5k race beginning of July, 10k September and was on track to do Half Marathon in October 2007 but sprained my ankle!

Honestly if you saw me you wouldn't think I was a runner!

all very impressive, you know. i fear that i am immune to endorphins after such a rollercoaster life.
actually i'd love to get the endorphin thing. i just felt a bit shaky and tired after my most recent 'run' of three mins on, three mins off.

i didn't get the endorphins until i was running about 20 minutes nonstop. i tell you what though, when i run faster now i get them in bucketloads, which is why i love my fartlek sessions so much - i might feel like i'm about to puke but i'm high as a flippin kite so i don't care

pleased to report the running the t-shirt under the tap technique worked a treat today, much more comfortable and my speediest evah

i got passed for the first time in a while today by a fella clearly having a verrrrry relaxing jog well within his comfort zone. but it cheered me up no end to pass him back when i was doing one of my speedy bits (the fact that he was, um, running backwards at that point is not relevant ).

I agree mwff. I think that most of the benefits come from prolonged periods of running. Speed? Hmmm.... still not that good at that but improving.

aitch have you even glanced at the c25k thread? none of us thought we could do it, really we didn't.

the only thing that really stands in people's way as far as i can see it is not being able to commit regular time to it. if you follow the programme - repeating weeks if necessary - it really works, i swear it's magic

I'm going for a 16k tomorrow morning, but we are in the middle of torrential tropical thunderstorms and I'm a little worried I may fall into a pothole and never be seen again.

Hi everyone, I would love to join your thread if that's o.k.? Have only been running since birth of DD eight months ago but am really enjoying it now. Started by mostly walking a couple of miles 3/4 times a week & am now up to 6 miles 3 times a week.

Aitch, if you keep going little & often, walking when you want, just getting round your route - you will see & feel the rewards
